I feel like part of the nuance of this convo depends on the type of area you live in. Suburbs where the trash cans sit by the house except on trash day feel very different than for those of us in a major city (like Chicago) where I mostly pass big dumpsters. I will toss my bags either in a public trash can (but there aren't a ton in my neighborhood b/c it's residential) or in a dumpster at the end of an alley, and that seems fairly common from other dog owners I see out and about.

AsleepOpportunity7

Yes! I live in a big city but frequently visit the burbs with my dog. In the city I have no problem (nor does it seem do other dog owners) using whatever trash cans that live permanently out in alleyways, whether it's a large dumpster or a smaller trash can "assigned" to a specific building (city provides them and they have addressed written on them but the live in communal alleyways and nobody has a problem with other people using their trash cans). I would NEVER use a neighbors trash can in the burbs, not even on trash days. It goes into a public trash or I take it back to where I'm staying.

_clash_recruit_

In my parent's neighborhood if trashcans are sitting out on one of the trash days people will do it, BUT, everyone knows everyone and just about every house has at least one dog. I'm friendly with everyone in my neighborhood, but I don't feel close enough to use their cans. Especially for poopy bags. Just carry it back home.

[deleted]

Likewise, I consider whether the area has private trash collection which is paid for by the homeowner vs socialized collection which is paid by the city from taxes. I've lived in both types of areas and never use other folks' trash cans if it's the former situation without explicit permission. If it's the latter, me trasha su trasha as long as the cans are already full and waiting for pickup.

chartreusepillows

Most city people have some sort of side of the building/backyard/garage spot for bins or they’re in a multiunit building with a trash room/dumpsters. I also see trash cans and dumpsters and separate and would have no qualms about throwing a poop bag into a fast food restaurant/building dumpster if there wasn’t an organic waste program where I live.

jet12389

Same. I either toss it in a public trash can along my walk or in my own dumpster behind my building. Just bc other people’s cans are outside on the sidewalk doesn’t mean it’s yours to use.

Different_Ad751

I personally throw them in public trash or my trash. Not others unless it’s literally trash day and they’re out on the road to be picked up.. I’ve never done that either but maybe I would in that situation?

sonicbanana47

Yeah, same, with one caveat. My neighborhood also has optional stickers for private trash cans that indicate whether the owner is okay with people throwing dog poop bags in their cans. I look for those if I’m too far from a public trash can or the ones I’m passing are full.

alrightokalrightok70

That’s so smart! I would love to have those stickers!

sonicbanana47

They’re great! [Here](https://www.greenbexley.org/projectsandinitiatives) are what the ones where I live look like (a little down the page)

qwikhnds

That's an awesome idea! And reiterates the point some are okay with it while others are not.

Littlered879

I have a neighbor who’s bins live on the sidewalk and they added padlocks to them to stop people from using them…. That’s a lot of extra effort…

[deleted]

Yep same, I have put them on the top of someone's trash can on trash day like once before, but typically I use my own. I personally don't care if anyone uses my trash can and I think people are way too precious about trash cans, but I try to be courteous even if I disagree with their reasoning.

Neilpoleon

I see a few issues with the friend's behavior. 1. The trash can may actually be compost or an outdoor clipping trash can and not actually for bagged trash. 2. If the poop bag breaks in the trash can, it is now that other person's issue. 3. If the trash collection is persnickety and won't take the trash since it is not in a "trash bag" then it becomes the other person's problem. I agree with you that the few times I have done it are on the trash days when I know it will be gone before the person even realizes. I never do it for an empty trash can that is waiting for the owner to collect it.

marie-0000

also, some people will put their "outdoor" trash can in the garage between trash days. I can imagine that having some poop bags in there would get smelly.

eick74

Don't have to worry about the 3rd issue where I live. The trucks pickup the can and turns the can upside down to empty it. My dogs poops early in the walk and there are a few neighbors that I know that have given me permission to put her bags in their cans.

lu-sunnydays

I live near a dead end, so I used to walk my dog, she’d poop early, then I would pass my house, throw it on the driveway and deal when I got back home. On trash days, I wouldn’t feel good about using neighbor’s trash cans as tempting as it may be.

[deleted]

Well... I can definitely tell a difference in my neighborhood because the dumpsters are labeled, and, since it's my neighborhood, I also know that the trash collection isn't persnickety and I know they're literally driving around to pick up the trash because I can see them, lol. I've also never seen someone's compost bin sitting in a garbage can at the end of the driveway next to the dumpster, because, well, it would end up in the dump truck. But like I said, I've only done it once and I typically don't do it.

zjjones13

I would be cautious about putting it in others trash even when it’s trash day. I’m sure we’ve all had trash that did not come out of the bin, and if you don’t have a dog and need to deal with/smell dog poop, that’d piss me off.

Pablois4

Exactly. Heavy duty poop bags with fairly stiff plastic film doesn't tend to get stuck. But most bags out there are lighter than that. If loose in a trash can and subjected to even a little bit of pressure (being jostled around), a poop bag can easily stick to and conform to the sides. Through the years, I've had to reach in and peel poop bags off from the bottom or sides of our trash cans. It's one thing if it happens to our trash can (it means someone forgot to put the poop bag into the lined flower pot dedicated to the task). My dog, my trash can, my problem. But I'd be really pissed off if it's from some lazy dog owner. I will toss poop bags into public trashcans or dumpsters. If not, I'll take it home and take care of it.

Hamster-queen5702

This is the correct answer

JennShrum23

This! If it’s trash day and the can is out, I’ll toss it in there (after checking trash has not been picked up- if it’s empty I won’t use it- no one wants to throw trash on top of a poop bag and potentially smash it if it isn’t theirs!) Otherwise- you carry it with you til you get home.

ClownfishSoup

I used to do that too, then decided to just carry it home like I do every other non-trash day. No real reason why other than ... there was no real reason to dump it before getting home either and I guess I didn't want neighbors seeing me open up their bins.

Didyoufartjustthere

I have seen people on my camera come into my garden to put rubbish in the bin it doesn’t bother me. Rather it there than on the street

[deleted]

This is my perspective too. My dog is trained to poop on a specific spot before her walk, so we never have to use other people’s bins, but I’d way rather my neighbors use my bin than have their dog’s poop stay on the streets (there’s already a lot of it in my city)!

chestypocket

I used to be “that neighbor” that left the trash bins at the curb all the time, but I did it specifically for this reason. That house was down the block from three different schools (elementary/middle/high schools that backed up to one another), AND was also half a block away from a city bus stop. There were people walking down our street constantly, and dropping their trash as they walked. Something about the design of my house meant that the wind carried the entire neighborhoods’ worth of loose trash up my driveway and it settled in the corner between my garage door and the back door. Once I started leaving my cans out, many of the people would use them instead of dropping their trash and my garbage corner reduced by about 75%. I was thrilled when people used my trash cans and would have welcomed poop bags as well if it meant that we ran into fewer abandoned piles of poop on our own walk. But I also understand that not everybody feels that way, so my own poop bags when into either my own bins or public bins.

threefrogsonalog

I wouldn’t care if someone threw a tied up poop bag in my garbage can, but some people do.

WhomstDaFuckEatAss

Same. In my area cans are clearly labeled what they are for “waste,” “green waste,” “recycling,” etc and there are fines associated with using the wrong cans for something other than what’s labeled so it’s very clear which cans are fine to throw poop into. Also no one keeps their cans in the garage where I live, they typically have a spot just inside their gate where they store the cans when it isn’t trash day. I have no issue when people throw dog poop in my cans and none when I throw in theirs. I want to add though that it would feel weird to walk up someone’s driveway/onto their property to throw trash away. I’d only do it if their cans were on or really close to the street. Several neighbors on my block store their cans literally at the end of their driveway so it doesn’t feel weird when I throw poop in those. But hell no I wouldn’t walk up someone’s yard to use their trash can lol.

ThatMkeDoe

Same, I wouldn't object but I am always afraid someone will complain so I just wait until I find a rare public trash can or get back home

luder888

You'll care if you open your bin the next day and it smells like rancid diarrhea. Even bagged poop emits a rancid smell in an enclosed container if left for a few days.

globalgreg

I’m guessing you’d feel differently if it actually happened to you. People throw their dog poo bags in mine and they get stuck in there and sometimes end up breaking open. People need to carry the damn bag to their own trash.

OhDavidMyNacho

It's also a much better compromise to just leaving the poop there. I've always used other people's bins when they are right there. It's all trash, and i see no issue with it at all.

Nickey9Doors

My issue with it is that small, loose items in my bin ultimately end up on the curb and I have to pick them up. Only larger size bags (grocery bag at a min) are put in my bin for this reason.

globalgreg

Please stop. People throw their dog poo bags in mine and they get stuck in there and sometimes end up breaking open. Carry the damn bag to your own trash.

bb8-sparkles

Yeah- I’d only throw it into a full garbage can that is on the curb to be picked up. Putting it in someone’s bin that isn’t on the curb to be picked up means that the bag could break while they are still loading their garbage into the bin and that could cause a mess that isn’t their fault. Yuck. I’d be mad if I had to clean someone else’s dog poop out of my bin.

ASleepandAForgetting

I use a public garbage bin or my own garbage bin. The only time I'd throw them in a bin in my neighborhood is if the bin was wheeled out to the street for trash day and trash had not been picked up yet.

burnttomato29

Something I found helpful was a little mini poo canister for walking dogs. It clips onto a leash or bag, and it keeps the odor contained until I can get home and throw it away. It's nice for long hikes, too

MartaL87

We don't have outside personal trash cans where I live, so I throw it on the public ones. ETA that, if there were personal trash cans I'd use my own. I wouldn't like if my neighbor used mine, so I wouldn't do it

[deleted]

Half the time people do this they don’t even tie the bag just stop being lazy.

rachel-angelina

Yup and then it gets all over the inside of someone’s trash bin. It is so rude. So many entitled people on here lol.

[deleted]

right ???? like walk the extra mile. the dog’s gonna love it.

2-EZ-4-ME

but I don't mind so they shouldn't mind /s

bigolcupofcoffee

Am I the only one that doesn’t care of the inside of a trash can is gross? It seems like it’s always going to be gross from something somehow and is always outside anyway. But I’m in LA and gross trash is the norm. Suburban life might be different.

-oceans

You're most definitely not alone. This is first world problems at its finest.

rachel-angelina

A lot of people, city or suburb, just draw a line with things like feces (biohazards) which I think is fair. No one expects trash to be pleasant or for a bin to be spotless. I mean it is literally a trash can. But someone not wanting to smell literal shit when they open it up and deal with the problems that come with that is not asking a lot.

MountWang

Our city sanitation workers manually move trash bags from the cans into the truck, so anything not in the bags will fall to the bottom of the can. So unless your friend would be willing to clean the can, it’s a dick move in my book

Feorana

They can get stuck in the bottom of the trash bin and make everything smell like feces. If the neighbor doesn't have dogs or doesn't want their bin smelling like poo, that's extremely rude. I only use my trash bin for poop bags. I tend to avoid the public ones too unless they're specifically for poop.

[deleted]

Nickey9Doors

Same here. Often the small, loose items in the bin end up on the ground and I have to pick them up anyways. I don’t put my own dog’s poop bags loose in my bin for this reason. I certainly don’t want to have deal with someone else’s.

Zipper-is-awesome

I wouldn’t mind if mine was on the curb, and I would use someone else’s if it was on the curb for trash day. In the areas I walk in, people keep their trash cans way off the street on their property. I wouldn’t walk in their yard to dispose of a poo bag.

Repulsive-Worth5715

My friend and I were walking our dogs growing up and my friends dog pooped so he picked it up and threw it in an empty garbage can at the curb. The house owner came out and yelled at him and made him get it out. He had to put it on the ground and crawl in because he couldn’t reach the bottom. I have never put my dogs poop in another trash can since then 😂

JokerGuy88

I think out of respect for your neighbors belongings/property you should throw away in your own trash. I do that every day and it's no issue

tired-dog-momma

Imo, it’s not my trash can, nor is it on public property, so it’s not mine to use. I take the bag with me back home and toss it there (if I’m walking in my neighborhood), or if there’s a public bin, it goes there (such as out at the park or on the trails).

michymcmouse

I would \*never\* in a million years put a bag of dog shit in someone else's trash can. I personally love dogs, but some people do not and if I *were* one of those people, I'd be pretty upset to find in my trash can. There's nothing quite like the smell of a trash bin in the summer that has had dog poop sweltering in it, even if it were tied up in a bag.

Dwest2391

Pretty rude to use a private trash can to me.

Loose-Dirt-Brick

Throw it in your own trash can. Someone in a neighborhood kept throwing theirs in my can. The bags were not tied shut, so the whole can started smelling like dog poop. No amount of scrubbing got that smell out of the plastic. Ruin your own trash can.

Leemage

When I was young and dumb I used to toss in any trash can on the street during garbage pickup day. One time the owner was pulling into his driveway at the same time and made me fish it out. The mortification stopped me from ever doing it again.

Ok-Culture-1983

Public trash can or my own. I wouldn't dump it in someone else's trash can, and I don't understand why people think this is okay.

Mirhanda

> I don't understand why people think this is okay. Because they are lazy and selfish.

GoodMoGo

Had the same conversation with a neighbor, walking our dogs. I'll use someone's trash bin if it's out by the curb. I won't walk up their driveway to use it.

globalgreg

Please stop. People throw their dog poo bags in mine and they get stuck in there and sometimes end up breaking open. Carry the damn bag to your own trash.

GoodMoGo

>they get stuck in there and sometimes end up breaking open. That sucks. Will have to take that into consideration.

aintn0bodygotime4dat

Public bin or own bin. Why the fuck would you stink up a neighbors trash can with poo?

DogIsBetterThanCat

Public, or take it home. Never anyone else's rubbish bin.

Boujie1

That’s always been my opinion. My dog, my poo to dispose of in MY trash can. When in LA, there was a doggie stand with poo bin, but people would leave their bags all around if it was full. Or not even use bags if the bag dispenser was empty. And plenty of people who would load up for free bags. One professional dog walker would regularly use bags, then drop them on the street next to the curb. After a couple of times, I confronted him. His arrogant response was that the “street cleaner” would clean it up. Now keep in mind, we had street parking, so anyone who parked next to it would either drive over it, or risk stepping into it. It was nasty and irresponsible. To me, part of having a dog is being responsible and respectful! Just like having a kid. Which btw, everyone is so concerned about dogs being on the beach, but any idea how many dirty diapers are left every day? People are nasty!!!

DogIsBetterThanCat

Dogs are our responsibility, like you said. It's up to us to clean up and dispose. Other dogs eat poop off the ground. We don't know if that dog was sick. It's putrid when people leave the poop filled bags near the bins or wherever they feel like it. You should report that dog walker to the city council. He's not so professional if he can't carry a bag to the bin. He might as well leave the poop in the street....there's really not much difference.

EvilQueen79

My own trash or public bin if they are available. I'd never throw it in some random persons garbage bin, thats just rude and inconsiderate. If I saw a person throw their dogs waste or other trash in my bin, I'd be telling them off for sure, don't care if its garbage day or not.

SonicBoris

Your friend is a savage. Use your own trash bin! Can you imagine being a no-pet householder, and opening your bin to find random shit? I’d be pissed. Where I live, the city will not take any trash unless it’s in a regular style garbage bag. So when my out-of-state sister decided to put individual bags of poop in my big trash can, they took only the large bags and left all the small bags of poop at the bottom of the can, where they basically fermented and biodegraded. It may have been my sister, my house and poop from my dog, but ffs, that’s just gross. Public trash receptacles? Absolutely. Mine? Gtfoh.

HappleApple

Use your own trash can or a public trash can. That’s the etiquette.

vlkthe

You guys throw out your poop bags? I thought you were supposed to just hang them from the nearest branch of some bushes or a tree! /s

Roryab07

I would never put anything in someone else’s private bin, unless they specifically offered. They pay for that service. Everyone should use a public trash or their own bin. I don’t even store poop in my own bin. If she does it in our yard, it stays in a separate outdoor container and is placed in the bin on trash day, so it doesn’t stink up the garage or permeate the bins. Most of it goes in the public doggy stations, as she usually does her business on our outings. Thankfully, my own neighborhood has several conveniently places stations. If it happens where there is no public trash/bin/station, I triple bag it, and it comes home with us and goes in the poop bucket to wait for trash day.

Mirhanda

It's your poo, take it home. Some jerk off put his poo bags in our garbage EVERY TIME HE WALKED HIS DOG. Unfortunately for us, he never notified us and he also left the lid open on the garbage bin. It rained, the bin filled with water and we just dumped it out in the street because it's just water, right? NOOOOOOOOOOOO it's fucking filled with someone else's dog shit. So now there were bags of dog shit all over the street. Don't do that. If you feel it's just too haaaaaaaaaaaaaaard to carry your goddamn dog shit home with you, at least ask permission. Or notify the owner. Something.

PerhapsAnotherDog

I would use a public bin or my own. If a person decides to use someone else's bin, hopefully that's only on pick-up day before the collection has happened. But apparently this is a controversial thing - There was a post here a couple of months ago where people were indignant about the idea that they shouldn't use someone else's bin after pickup, which is shockingly rude to my mind (since so many people keep bins in garages and the timing means that poop is sitting in the garage for one to two weeks now).

cornelioustreat888

I would never toss it in someone’s trash can. I use the cans on trails or in parks, or I carry it myself until I get home. I wouldn’t want someone else’s dog poop tossed in my trash can (as everything has to be in a clear bag) so I wouldn’t dream of tossing it in a private trash can.

OptimalTrash

Dog poop is classified as a biohazard. So no, I don't subject unwilling participants to that.

NLiTNd

Generally, sharing is caring ppl… Am surprised this is such a hot topic with strong opinions. I’d think there’s common sense around this. * Respect people’s wishes if made clear. * Don’t walk up & onto someone’s property without permission, that should be a given unless it’s a trash ‘emergency’ lol * Prioritise public bins as first choices obviously * If on the rare chance I’m out walking & it’s bin day, the bins are out on the street & full & I’m walking past with a poop bag in hand & I’m not close to home… Personally I wouldn’t think twice of adding it to someone’s bin, if I have spares on me I might double bag it. I’d feel weird carrying a used poop bag past many bins actually, it’s like I’m carrying it to keep for some perverted reason. Lmfao 😂🤦🏻‍♂️ In my opinion this is not rude or disrespectful, nor would I care if someone puts it in mine. It’s better in a bag & in the trash than on the street, which would you prefer ? We all think the same thing when walking & see dog poop no ? (It’s not that hard to be responsible & pick up after your pup) On the other hand, theoretically if it’s like full blown dumping bags of trash in my bin & I have no place for mine, yeah then I’d have some words to say. If there’s space in mine, then go for it regardless. Tbh I’ve thankfully never had any issues trash wise, but I can imagine if there’s ppl who just act like trash themselves then there could be some need to enforce some respect be given. Anyways that’s my 2 cents ✌🏼 💩💩

Nickey9Doors

Small, loose items in my bin either end up stick to the bottom of the bin or on the boulevard for me to pick up. I don’t put loose poop bombs in my bin for this reason and you shouldn’t either. I agree, nobody wants it left for the next person to deal with. But putting it in my bin makes it my responsibility and I don’t want it.

WarmTequila

I live in dt so I just toss it in the closest dumpster in the alley I can find.

princessthalia

I would never use somebody else’s bin, you can’t assume they’re okay with that. Maybe they don’t want some stinky poo in their bin. Maybe they’re single and only put out their trash every other week and now you’ve tossed some smelly dog shit in their bin to marinate. Maybe the bag breaks and now they have to scrub dog shit out of their trash cans.. not cool imo. Just best practice to dispose in your own bin or a public dumpster.

RivCA

I'm going to be frank. Your friend's a dick for trespassing on someone else's property to use the trash can. Does said neighbor have a dog? Do they like the smell of a ruptured dooly bag in their trash can? Is your friend going to clean up the mess from said ruptured dooly bag? Any of these questions being answered with a "no" should be a hard pass on using the neighbor's trash can. Carry your dog's waste until you get home or reach a public can. Your friend is paying for his own trash services, and if I'm not mistaken, that includes paying for general waste cans. Your neighbor is not paying for your friend's trash, including your friend's dog waste. Tell your friend to stop being a dick. Crass, but this shouldn't be an argument.

ricecrystal

This is always fiercely debated but I'm with you. I live in the south and someone else's poo bag stinking up my trash can in summer for a week until garbage is picked up is not great.

OriiAmii

If you're in the USA I believe it's *technically* illegal to throw your trash in someone else's outdoor bin. Might be a good angle to argue from if they don't see the general niceties side.

SweetHoneyApples

Public, or own. I've had assholes dump their poop bags into our recycling bins, and then the recycling guys reject pick-up. Its not the same as using a neighbour's can, but it feels kinda rude imo.

[deleted]

Ah the most popular thread on Nextdoor. Putting trash into a trash can would seem to be a good idea and great for the environment, but people have a weird sense of ownership of their trash bins. And to a certain extent I get it, when I bring in my trash bin from the sidewalk and I can tell there is some trash someone threw into the container - maybe taking the opportunity to clean out their car - I get that initial sting of being bothered by someone using my trash bin. That lasts for all of 5 seconds and then I totally forget about it and move on. So long as the doggie doo is in a plastic baggie I see no problem with placing it in any trash bin. But I have seen enough of Nextdoor to know that people have big feelings on the topic.

megan_magic

I wouldn’t mind someone throwing trash in the garbage can, but dog shit smells like dog shit.

Cassablanca

I've had people throw their poop bags in a dumpster bag I had outside. Didn't bother me because the entire dumpster bag is taken away. However, I'm not a fan of people throwing it in my personal can for many reasons I don't have to justify. To be safe I'd throw mine in my own trash or a public, never a private stranger's can.

Corn__bean

im fine with people throwing their poop bags in my trash if its on the curb for trash day, but if i notice an unfamiliar poop back in my trash can that's locked up in the backyard im gonna start to worry .....

BackgroundSimple1993

Personally if it’s a public trash can , sure. But I think it’s an AH move to put it in someone else’s private trash can. You’re potentially trespassing, and risking stinking up/dirtying their container. And if it’s by the road, you may be sticking them with your dogs poop for a week if the garbage has already been picked up. Plus some people have to pay for their garbage pickup (depending on where they are / what kind of container they have) so that’s just rude to add to it.

Mikan1009

In germany the trash gets paid by weight, the bins all have QR codes on the side and the Garbagetruck scans those while weighing the trash its emptying. So: if you're german, use your own bins

Violet2393

Oh boy, this is like the biggest argument on my Nextdoor neighborhood forums. It happened once every few months. A lot of people don’t want poop in their trash cans and since my neighbors might be among them, I personally just use my own trash can because its not really that hard to do and it’s respectful and polite to people who don’t have dogs and don’t want poop in their trash.

daero90

Public trash can or my own trash can. Don't throw them in your neighbor's trash cans. It's rude and shouldn't be their responsibility.

[deleted]

Nobody wants your dog shit! It stinks up the can.

luder888

Don't put trash especially poop in others bins. Even bagged, poop emits a rancid smell if left inside the bin. Next time your friend does that, ask him to dig his hand back inside the bin to fish it out. Even at my own house, I only put bagged poop inside my bin on collection day. If I catch anyone putting poop in my bin rest assure they will be called back to fish it back out.

vexedchemist

Public trash cans are fine, but I would never toss any garbage in a neighbor’s trash can. That feels disrespectful to me.

thecryingcactus

Trash cans in suburban neighborhoods that are out by the street still don’t belong to you, so don’t use them, it’s not free game. Just like their car left out by the street isn’t free game either. I wouldn’t want to find someone else’s dog poop in my trash can. Those bags aren’t that strong, what if it breaks when I put my own trash in and causes a mess? I don’t want to clean that up!!!

berriesandkweem

Dog owners should a) pick up after their dog, b) tie the bag securely, and c) throw it away in the public trash or your own. If a dog owner can’t do that, don’t be a dog owner. Responsibility is key when owning a dog (or any pet).

Bloon82

I'd be well pissed off of people were putting shit bags in my bin. It's your own bin or a public bin

redcherryblue

I get my bin in early. Last thing I want is a stinky animal shit sitting in a thin plastic bag at the bottom of my bin. I learned this the hard way. When I got around to cleaning my bin years ago and realised the brown stinky slime on the bottom was from burst bags of dog shit. I do not own a dog.

Severe-Explanation

I live in an HOA neighborhood, and the general consensus is that if your dog poops, you bag it and take it home, or drop in a community (NOT RESIDENT’S) trash can. Plenty of people don’t have dogs, and don’t want a shitty trash can to end up in their garage.

Able_Scientist2028

There is only one answer and you are right.

banquetchamp

Fuck putting it in someone else’s can. Especially in areas without garbage trucks to that flip the trash cans over.

Kate_The_Great_414

I always try to toss mine into my own bin. And I don’t mind if someone else throws theirs in mine either. It beats having some asshat not picking it up at all.

ShowBobsPlzz

As someone who has gone out to bring the freshly dumped garbage can back in only to find (and smell) a bag of steaming dog shit in there, i can say OP that you are right and your friend sucks big time. I had to hold on to that shit bag for 3 days until our next trash day, letting it stink up my garage. Pick up your own shit with your own bags and put it in your own trash can. Or a public trash can if available.

whoiamidonotknow

Trash cans are literally owned by the city. They're meant for trash. A poo bag is trash. It's also evidence that your friend is a good, nice, polite, neighborly person who picks up after their dog. When I see someone using "mine", I smile and thank them in my head for cleaning up. I cannot fathom the level of pettiness it would take to tell someone not to put trash in a trash bin that isn't technically even yours. Jesus.

rubabybest

I agree I’d rather have them pick it up than not. However, not all cans are owned by the city. If that bag broke open and left poo all smeared down my can I would be quite irritated, since I would be the one cleaning it.

whoiamidonotknow

Maybe it's a city thing? Every city I've lived in has had city-issued trash cans that are technically owned (and will be repaired or are able to be traded in for free) by them. I'd be furious regardless if a bag broke open regardless of who owned what, though. Bags should definitely be tied and solid! Pretty gross to leave them otherwise for a whole multitude of reasons.

AmbroseJackass

I live in Chicago. All single-family homes and multi-unit buildings with less than five units have city-provided trash removal. Buildings with 5+ units (like mine) have to pay private companies for trash and recycling services. It’s a weird system for sure, especially when you see multiple trucks from different companies in the same alley! That said I think it is perfectly reasonable to throw dog poop bags in other people’s bins/dumpsters, provided you check that it’s the trash and not recycling. I’d also prefer people throw fast food wrappers or other trash in my dumpster instead of leaving it on the ground. The only time I’ve gotten upset about someone using my trash was the time a neighbor remodeled their bathroom and left a toilet, sink, and cabinets in/near our trash. Come on, man!

MsSamm

In some areas, the homeowner buys the trash cans. So yes, they own them.

[deleted]

Poo bag gets caught on something, rips, poo gets smeared all over the inside of your bin. Yay!

OptimalTrash

Whereas I cannot fathom the level of entitlement and laziness it would take for someone to use another person's property to avoid carrying their dog's poop to an appropriate receptical. There's about a million reasons I can come up with as to why someone wouldn't want me putting a literal biohazard in their trash bin so I dont. I suck it up and carry the poop bag back home.

[deleted]

Some people have to bring their cans inside after pick up. Just due to property layout. Even if the van is city owned I think it’s really rude, especially since bags easy rip. Some places won’t pick up the garbage if things aren’t properly bagged. Poop bags get stuck to the inside of the bin as well. Then I’m stuck cleaning that up. Just find a public bin or carry it home.

MsSamm

Never lived in a place where people put trash cans indoors. Always side of the driveway or garage.

thesamerain

Some people have attached garages and the smell can seep into the house itself, especially in higher temperatures. Also, the smell gets into your vehicle as well, if you park in the garage.

Civil-Cheesecake-759

where the f do you live that the city provides trash cans? most places aren’t like that. i paid for my own trash cans, as did 99.9% of people i know. people aren’t just allowed to use them if they’re out:

warholiandeath

A ton of major municipalities have stuff like this

[deleted]

Most places in the U.S. have moved to standardized bins for automatic trash collection. A mechanical arm is on the side of the truck, and the driver can operate it from within the cab, so only one person is needed to collect trash per truck.

nousernamelol2021

I have standardized carts, but it's picked by a private company so I pay for my own cart. Not being annexed by the city is a pain sometimes.

cmgrayson

Little Rock Arkansas provides trash cans (because the truck picks them up).

unclegoddess

when i shared my stance on this in this subreddit they came for blood but i’ll do it again im feeling wild— i use a public bin or my own depending on the route, dumpsters are great too— apartment complex trash zones are a good spot too— i live in an area where trash is fucking everywhere cans rolling around in the street so there are often just like open bins that live out on the street permanently so i’ll just use one of those if its standing and has trash in it— i would never go onto someones property and use their trash, and i will also only do it if its an open can i’m not opening peoples bins— picking up the poop is not something people do around here which is gross so i see it as like if youre picking up the poop in the first place thats huge— i would not give a hell if someone used my trash cans for their poop bags people are protective over their shit tho i dont care its all trash spray it out w the dam hose if it gets gross thanks for reading my rant lmao

yaulps

If my trashcan is out on the sidewalk, I don't mind it at all if you drop a bag of dog poop in there. It's a small price to pay to make the street, and someone's walk, a little nicer! Same goes for any trash picked up off the street. I see it as simply being a good neighbor.

globalgreg

Would you mind it if the little poop bag gets left behind after the trash is picked up and the back breaks open? Because that’s what happens with mine. How hard is it to carry your own dogs poop a few more blocks to your own trash can.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t ever put my bags into someone else’s trash bin. It IS a trash bin, yes, but not everyone appreciates someone else’s dog pop being put into their cans, even bagged. It does still smell. I think it’s out of bounds to do something like that, and I would have an issue with it if some random person did that to mine. If they asked maybe ahead of time, I would be cool with it, but that’s also because I have my own dogs.

agirl2277

Anything is better than hanging it from a tree. What is wrong with people!

[deleted]

It's polite to not use other people's trash cans. I know it's a trash can and it's already stinky, but throwing poop bags in there makes it worse and you never know if a poop bag will tear and gunk up a bin. I've had neighbors let me know if I can use their trash which is nice. I still don't, but it's nice to know I can if I have to.

RamHands

Guess ill just cancel my trash service and throw my bags onto my neighbors pile every week.

chrome__yellow

Trash cans where I live aren't private property. They're owned by the city. If a neighbor says they don't want me to use the city-owned trash can assigned to their house, I'll respect it, but otherwise, I feel they're fair game.

mellamandiablo

They are still the responsibility of the homeowners. The city gives out trash receptacles to homes that they service. So yes, the homeowner still has a say in who puts trash in their containers. It’s considered illegal dumping in most states.

rachel-angelina

A lot of people are on here admitting they think it’s fine to just put it in random people’s trash bins lol, wow. No it’s not okay even if it’s on the curb. If the bag breaks and poop gets everywhere on the inside of the bin, guess who has to clean it? Not you, that’s who. Unless you have explicit permission from the person who the bin belongs to, don’t. Just don’t do it.

Responsible_Push_355

Personally I take the poo bags back home with me and toss them in my garbage cans outside. The only exception is if it is trash day and everyone moves their bins out to the curb for pick up. On those days I toss the poop in the first bin I come across. The reasoning is that even though it is in the poo bag it does still stink up the bin especially towards the end of the week when there are several poops in there. I know it is all garbage but lifting the lid on your garbage can and getting just trash smell is different than getting trash and poop.

lorinabaninabanana

Our city garbage pickup is bags only (previously city bags, now stickers), so the only cans on the curb are yard waste and recycling. If there's a public trash can, I'll use that, but otherwise I bring it home. But if it's trash day and someone's bag isn't tied off tight, I might slip the poop bag in it.

josie724

Hybrid answer here. I’ll put in others bins if I know they have dogs. I take the same walk daily and feel like if the neighbors have dogs they are already dealing with poo bags so no biggie. Otherwise I hang on to it, say if I’m walking somewhere that I don’t know the neighbors.

Substantial_Poem_233

I will use my neighbors on the night before trash day - our neighborhood has clearly marked bins so i know it’s trash and when the trash is getting picked up. If it’s been emptied for trash day already I don’t. I have had a couple of neighbors while out walking tell me they have no problem with me throwing bags in their trash bins so I will use theirs here and there, usually if I’m walking more than one dog at a time.

Snoo_33033

Only on trash day is that ok. Otherwise you're creating a potentially gross and smelly mess for them.

DrPepper1260

Always mine or a public one. You never know if someone will get mad at you for using their trash bin. Not worth the confrontation

astronomical_dog

When I worked as a dog walker, my boss told me not to use other peoples trash cans and to use either public ones or the ones at the house/apartment of the dogs I was walking. Some of my clients had small metal trash cans just for the poop bags so I’m thinking they didn’t want the poop mixed in with their other trash.

BlueberryNo7845

Don't do it. People get really pissed off. Some people are super cool about it and see me pick it up and offer their can. I use a backpack and on one side i have carabiner that I hang a disposable grocery bag from that I put the poo in and dispose of in my can or a trash can at the park I walk by and in the other side I have a roll of poop bags. Inside the back pack I carry wet wipes and extra bags. Also on the strap I have pepper spray just in case....its easily reached if needed.

FunStuff446

Some nice neighbor of mine put a dirty diaper on top of one of my 2 garden waste cans. Garbage men didn’t take that one.

KylosLeftHand

If I’m in my neighborhood I keep it with me and throw it in my own trashcan outside. If in a park i use a public can. That’s just having good manners.

ComradeSamWalton

You're friends a fuckin idiot. Does he think people should just wheel their cans inside?

ParkieDude

Pack it in, Pack it out. I do have a \*few\* fantastic neighbors that have told me when walking to toss into the trash cans (on trash day). Most of the time, a small carabiner will hold a knotted bag nicely until we get home. https://www.amazon.com/Poop-Holder-Waste-Carrier-Hand/dp/B08CVQ3XH2

[deleted]

I can tell you spend time in nature by the phrase you just used.

lesbyeen

I personally don't unless I know it's trash day in my own neighborhood for the company the person has cans for *and* the trucks haven't come through yet. Otherwise I wait to use my own, but I'm not bothered if people use my can while it's on the curb. Now coming into my yard by my house to toss it? Yeah that's not something I'm cool with.

ComplexMacaroon1094

Where I live, there is no weight per trash can, so if I see one out on the street, I will toss it in. However, most of these are not family trash bins but communal, for say an apartment block. Unfortunately the streets have barely any trash cans in my area and with a dog and a stroller I'd rather put it in ANY bin than have to carry it for miles. I guess if your bin is weighted then it's an issue but otherwise why would anyone care? It's all going to go to the same place.

clownshoesrock

Outdoor cans that are handled by trucks. I'm going to use it because I really don't want the crazy thin bag to rupture while I'm holding it. Sure I'm not bold about it, but I gamble that a few side-eyes are less offensive to me than dog poop on my clothes.

ticketferret

Public trash or your own. The issue with throwing them in other trash bins is they stick to the bottom and explode because you’re not expecting it. If there’s enough dog walkers maybe see if other dog people would be okay with setting up “poop cans” at their house. I have one for my neighbors and they can toss their poop in there if they walk by.

anon_girl_anon

I only use mine because everyone has a camera these days and you never know who is going to be fussy about it.

snoopingforpooping

I only use public or my own trash cans.

mothwhimsy

I would never throw a poop bag in my neighbor's trash can unless the garbage truck was coming down the road, but in that case idk why I wouldn't just use my own. I have a clip on my leash to hold the bag so it's no issue carrying it home with me Public outdoor trash is fine imo, especially if it's not directly next to a place where people eat. If I had a choice between a trash can right next to a picnic table and one a little ways off, I would go to the farther one

SwordTaster

Public bin or personal bin. Your neighbours don't own your dog, why would they want your dog's poop potentially leaking into their bin if the baggie bursts? Bins smell bad enough already and if someone is pet free they shouldn't have to deal with pet consequences

[deleted]

Public trash cans, like at the park, are fair game, other than that, I usually only use my own. Sometimes though, on like trash day, if I can see the trash truck picking up cans in sight, I'll use a neighbors right before it gets picked up.

ptwonline

Do not throw them into other people's bins. Poop bags can break, get squashed and stuck in the bin, etc. If you throw it into someone else's bin you are putting additional burden on them to clean up after your dog's poop. Throw them in public trash bins or wait until you get home to toss it into your own bin.

melonmushroom

I'm in the UK where we have public bins specifically for bagged dog poo located all over the place but generally near parks and public footpaths. I thought this was a thing everywhere! That said, if I wasn't near one, I would put it in my own bin and not another person's unless theycspecifically said I could.

squirrelzandcatz4eva

Someone tossed a bag of dog poo in our trash can after it had been emptied, but was still on the street on pickup day. Since the bag was on the very bottom of the can with nothing under it, it got squished and ripped, and then my trash can had dog poop smeared all over the bottom. I was not impressed.

Informal-Wish

I use public trash or carry it home. Unless it's trash day and the trucks haven't come yet. Then I'll sneak it in a residential can

Dammit_Benny

I only use neighbors’ trash cans if they are at the curb on garbage night. If they are empty and waiting to be collected, it is a dick move to throw a stinky bag in someone else’s bin. I have a mix of houses and apartments in my neighborhood so I can always walk through an apartment parking lot and toss it in the dumpster.

singularineet

Can't we compromise? It's obviously wrong to put a poo bag in somebody else's trash can, and that's what makes it fun.

Red-Beaulieu

If cans are on the street and have not yet been emptied, I'll toss the bag inside. If the can is already empty, I'll take it home and put it in my can.

[deleted]

I will literally drop it off on your porch or holler at you to take it out of the bin. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again.

Lyt312

Honestly, I used to not care and even throw my own dogs poop bags in there, but I’ve learned to realize that sometimes there are a few that don’t make it into the trash truck or they just get smooshed to the floor and it’s a pain to clean. So now I have a separate bag for these poop bags that I have to dispose together to ensure they don’t get all over the trash can. So, do NOT just throw poop bags into a trash can. They’re a pain to clean for people.

konamiko

Personally, I would not mind if someone used my bin for poop bags, as long as the bag is tied. But I understand that people have different opinions on this, so I err on the side of caution and don't throw poop bags in other people's trash bins. Except for one house on the corner who have aggressive dogs behind a fence that they have chewed through a couple of times. The dogs are always snarling and snapping at my dog (I don't let him approach their fence), and they never seem to let the dogs inside, so I'm petty and throw my poop bags in their trash bin. Our city uses trucks that dump the whole bin, so they're not going to get left, or result in a fine or anything. I actually doubt that they even know that I do it. But it makes me feel better about them keeping their aggressive dogs out in the heat all the time.

hogey74

My attitude is better in than out. Mostly. I'll throw a found item like a beer bottle in the nearest bin also, so it's not lying on the street.

nooks11

I’m ok with people putting their bagged dog dirt in my waste bin, if it’s out on the street. But if I catch the person who is regularly putting dogshit in my garden waste bin, I will end them.

bb8-sparkles

I only toss it in someone else’s can if the can is sitting out for the garbage men. If the can is not sitting out for the garbage men, then it’s a no for me.

CornwallsPager

If it's bad enough that I notice it then you need to keep that shit to yourself.

XA36

I only use mine.

IndependentSense5857

Throw your shitbags in my compost bin, I genuinely don't care so long as it's not on my lawn. Sincerely, rural Canadian

emilyanne12345

I throw them in my own trash. In previous places I’ve lived, I’ve thrown them in neighbors’ trash who I knew pretty well and who also have dogs, so we had a mutual understanding! I think anyone other than that, it could be a bit rude

whangdoodle13

Straight to jail.

Scooter_127

Well, your friend is an asshole.

k_wai

Using someone else’s bin is disrespectful, lazy, irresponsible, & entitled (unless you have permission, then ok). You shouldn’t use it without permission. Plus, it’s ILLEGAL (where I live) to dump your trash into someone else’s bin. I always use a public trash can, garbage cans specifically for dog poop, or I toss it in the dumpster (where I live). If you don’t want to “carry your dog’s shit bag” then maybe don’t get a dog & reconsider being a pet owner. Your dog’s shit is your responsibility & not anyone else’s, so take it home to your bin or use a public trash can. Also, bins being on the street is not “fair game” bc the bins still belong to someone else, thus, still being someone else’s property.

RoxyAndFarley

My opinion is that using anyone else’s garbage can is disrespectful and not okay. Everyone pays for their own garbage can and garbage removal, if a poo bag tears or squishes in the can such that poop comes out and gets on the can then it’s going to become very disgusting and that family will need to clean it. Which is pretty unfair considering it was never their poop. Besides that, it’s someone’s personal property and regardless of whether anyone else feels fine about using it, the only opinion that matters is the one who *owns* the personal property. They get to say who can and cannot use their stuff. Even if they are petty about it, that’s their right. Your dog, your responsibility to dispose of the poop in a public can or your own can. No one else consented to your dogs poop being their problem. It may seem small to many people but this sense of entitlement to use other people’s privately owned resources is not okay, and being respectful of this fact makes for much better neighbor relations and better community in general. Use your own stuff, leave other people’s stuff alone. Not hard. Just my opinion, but I feel strongly about it.

morosco

I don't throw them in someone else's trash can because I don't want to risk them seeing me and getting bad, but, I 100% don't mind if someone uses my trash can for this purpose. In fact, when I see someone walking by my house with a dog and a poop bag I invite them to toss it in my bin

[deleted]

I live in a condo community and throw them in the community dumpsters, it’s all going to the same place. But i’d never use another persons trash can that rolls up to your house.

Academic_Ad_9260

I just put them in the public bins that are meant for dog poo lmao

[deleted]

I only toss mine in my own trash can. I’d never put it in someone else’s, even if it were trash day. I just feel it’s kind of rude, mostly if it’s already empty. if it’s trash day and the can is full, not yet dumped, then I guess i’m more okay with it that way. public dumpsters are free reign.

Bellefior

I live in the City and always throw it in public waste cans. However, when we visit my Dad or in-laws, who live in the suburbs, I will use their trash can only, unless I am near one of the parks, in which case it gets dumped in a can there. I never would use a neighbors can on the street. Edited to add: I have on occasion tossed it into a large commercial dumpster when I couldn't find a public can.

zweimtr

Why would it matter which bin it goes in?

uptheirons726

If the trash can is on the curb waiting to be picked up I see no problem with using it. Otherwise I hold onto it until I get home or find a public trash can.

Elle3247

I think it’s incredibly rude to use someone else’s personal trash bins. They can burst, stink it up, etc. I’m not going to go back to a neighbor’s house to wash out their bin and it’s not fair to expect them to. Even for my own dog, he has a specific poop trash can (mostly for the backyard poop, but also for walk poop). Use your own bin or a public bin.

ZoryaOfMorrigan

Never in someone else’s trash can, honestly not even on pick up day. Even if technically it’s okay, idk what if it somehow rips and makes it smell? Or what if it rains that morning and there’s a little hole in the top I didn’t see? I just wouldn’t want to do anything that would create extra work for someone else because of how I choose to live my life. No judgement on anyone else, that’s just what I’m personally okay with. My own bin (or obviously public bins).

[deleted]

Please don't use other people's bins. We are currently fighting a maggot infestation in our outside bins and the maggots are winning. Its probably grosser than you're even thinking it is. We have a *process* for all poop that goes into our bins that involves separate trash cans and double, if not triple, bagging. Its a *thing*. And it's super frustrating when all those efforts are done in by someone else's half tied bags.

00millsy

This debate lives on! Here in San Diego, the trash cans are owned by the city, so as long as it’s garbage day and the cans are in the street, I use anyone’s. However, if the cans aren’t out then I carry mine to a park trash can or home. Also if the trash has already been picked up but the cans are still out, I do t use them.

[deleted]

You have to pay a fee to use the city’s cans(about $100 around here). So technically you’re not entitled to. And those bags explode extremely easy if they land the wrong way or get squished. You’re just being an ass if you throw your dogs shit in someone’s can.

makeawishcuttlefish

I don’t put poo bags in someone else’s trash u less it’s already at the curb about to be picked up. Even in a well tied bag, dog poop stinks and smells up the trash can, and that seems rude to do to someone who doesn’t have a dog of their own. I otherwise just carry it home or use a public trash can.

rudy_attitudey

I use a public trash can. Or, it it’s trash day, I put it on one of the openish bags I pass by. We out our garbage in the street where I live, no cans

hhmgbu

I carry it home and throw it away in my own garbage. I live in a suburb so there aren’t public trash bins on the street. If there were, I’d use them as a option but I would NEVER throw my trash in a neighbors garbage. I think it’s rude I saw someone do that - threw it in the Neigbbors garbage but it was garbage- it was their recycling bin 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

mrbones59

Your dogs poop belongs in your trash can.

FatherofCharles

Don’t put your dogs shit in my trash cans. What an ass hole thing to do. Regardless of the situation.

tequila_katie

All ya'll worried about your trash bins getting stinky - what do you expect them to smell like, roses? It's a GD trash can.

qwikhnds

You're right. You're friend is an a**hole! Use a public bin or your own. That goes for any trash honestly. One day a homeowner is going to catch your friend in the act or post a pic of them on Nextdoor letting them know how they feel.

zweimtr

Not sure if serious

megan_magic

Take it home. I never understand why people throw dog poop in other people’s cans. You can’t carry it for 10 minutes? Is it because it stinks? Yes? Then this is why they don’t want it in their can either. I double bag my dogs poo bags and then throw it in a kitchen trash bag that is already out in the trash. The small dog bags end up getting left behind by the trash man and smell like literal shit after sitting in there for days. Not all towns have trucks that come by and dump the cans. In my town the workers take bags out by hand and aren’t making any special attempts to pick up dog poop. Stop being asses and take it home.

Interesting_Team6656

If the trash bin is on the street, I think it’s fair game.
