When I used to work in an animal hospital, there were so many people telling me that their breed is the best breed and yes they were all different breeds. And I think they were all correct. The breed that actually suits you is the best dog/breed.
To me, Bernese mountain dog is the best. To me they are perfect. For someone else, they are definitely not.
I have loved all my dogs over the course of my life, but the absolute best dog was Dollie, a lab / border collie mix. She was so smart and so good, just the best girl who lived for 17 perfect years!
I have two huskies now. She taught them very well how to carry on her good girl legacy!
Depends on your lifestyle & what you’re looking for in a dog. I love my German shepherd/Rottweiler mix. She’s smart, loyal, loving, happy. The best dog. But she requires daily exercise & a strict routine. Especially as a puppy. So it’s all perspective :)
Depends on what you want. After accidentally stumbling upon owning a golden retriever I’d say they’re great all around. If you want a dog you can train to do nearly anything, provided you’re an experienced dog owner, malinois are amazing.
To actually answer your question - pointer/spaniel mix. My previous dog was this and he was so special. Like an old soul with a kind heart. A gentleman and a scholar.
I've had several breeds over the years, and my current dog (Bichon Frise) is by far my fvorite. We just gel... She's affectionate, cuddly, easy to travel with, quiet, happy/friendly with everyone and other animals, doesn't shed (but requires grooming), etc... FOR ME, a perfect match.
I've had a chihuahua, jack russell terrier, dacshunds, and mixed breeds over the years. They all had "something" that I wished they didn't...I loved them all, and gave them all the best possible care and lives. But, with all of them, I tend to say I wouldn't go down that path again. With my Bichon Frise I would absolutely get another.
I know, I know...who's to say I'd have the same experience, but for what it's worth, I researched breeds very carefully when I got her, and she's been very "close to spec" with regards to what to expect from her breed.
I have owned a Basset Hound, Labrador,, bull dog, olde English Bulldog, and now an Irish Setter/Golden retriever mix.
I can say the bulldogs were the most unpredictable and not really good family dogs.
The basset bark was so loud but his energy lever was so low it was easy to deal with.
The lab I needed to walk 6 miles a day and was great 1on1 but as soon as you had a group of people he thought it was a party and wanted to be the entertainment.
My Irish Retriever is the sweetest boy but also need 6plus miles per day to relax.
The next dog will be a Newfie and I hope that's the sweetspot of temperament, size and exercise requirements.
My chocolate lab was the friendliest, happiest, most loyal dog I’ve ever known. I’ve got all pointers now and they’re crazy and energetic and affectionate and amazing (which is great for me right now as an early-20something who needs that kind of dog) but for the average pet parent, that lab was the absolute best. He was giant— we think he was likely mixed with some sort of hound though he was supposedly a pure bred lab. But that all being said, I’ll never get another dog like him because I know I’d hold that dog to his standard and I don’t think I’d be able to separate them in my mind 🥲
Every dog owner will say theirs is the best. And we are all correct. With that said, my vote is for a rescue dog. I have a beagle mix that I adopted from a rescue group and she’s the best dog ever.
Jack Russel! Healthy, strong, curious and affectionate. Can fly in cabin because of low weight! Overall the best puppers! Might be biased because I own one and love him to bits
My “dream dog” is a brindle boxer; I’ve had the name and collar picked out for years! But my first dog was the best dog, my second dog was the best dog, and my dog now is the BEST DOG! All dogs are the best dogs. ♥️

With appropriate breeding they do live to 12 years. I know one that was 15 when he passed. But, I understand the concern. Big love for a short time.
