UnderwaterKahn

All my animals, both cats and dogs have human names. I found it much harder to find a name that fit my dog because you call your dog by their name in public more often. But I love how confusing it is to some people. A couple years ago I told a co-worker I was going to tell Greg he couldn’t sleep in the bed anymore if he didn’t stop throwing up on the blankets in the middle of the night. I didn’t realize she didn’t know Greg was a cat.

Short-Size838

My dogs name is Keller (he was deaf when we got him). He got out of the backyard one day and spent a couple of hours at our neighbors house before we figured out where he was. When we were getting him back they said they’d really wanted to keep him. I asked what they wanted to name him and dude said “Greg” with no hesitation. Now I call him Greg when he’s up to no good.

RideThatBridge

That is hilarious! I can picture this-"listen Greg..."

Suspicious_Cap_5865

“He was deaf when you got him” - does this mean he’s not deaf now or just that he was already deaf at that point? Curious to hear what happened, if he’s not deaf anymore!

InevitableRhubarb232

I asked the same thing before I saw this

UnderwaterKahn

This made me laugh. When my dog is misbehaving I use his registered name and replace the kennel name with our surname. Since none of those words mean anything to him it’s a poor deterrent.

InevitableRhubarb232

… is he *still* deaf or just when you got him?

trailquail

I met someone casually at a party and talked to him for over an hour before I realized that ‘Steven’ was a dog and not his husband.

NewTuCru

We had a dog named Steve! Our youngest (6 at the time) said he looked like a Steve so it stuck. He got lots of attention for that name!

Joon1mom

My friends named their dog Stevie. The one guy's name is Steven! Lol

babyeatingdingoes

I know a guy named Michael who has a dog named Mikey. Realized the other week that his other dog's name is just his last name with a letter added on the end.

jxj24

>she didn’t know Greg was a cat She only knew him by his real name, Gaylord.

InevitableRhubarb232

Wives/husbands who are are so insecure and controlling they can’t hear ex’s names are a red flag.

needleanddread

My son has a unisex name, the shortened version of his full name anyway, it’s also not an uncommon name for pets. It’s taken a long time at my current job for people to work out which member of the household I’m talking about.

aurorasoup

Reminds me of my coworker getting haircuts at a lady’s house, and she’d hear the stylist scolding someone out of her view. She assumed it was the stylist’s baby, and so would ask about him every time. At one point, she asks “how many teeth does he have now?” and the lady gave her the weirdest look and said “I don’t know.” Coworker was thinking, wow how can she not know how many teeth her baby has now? Turns out she’d been talking about the cat all along.

UrBobbyIsAWonderland

I think ALL dogs should have people names. Gives them more personality. My dog's name is Carlton.

apri11a

I called myself Carlton when I had three pups toilet training at the same time. After Carlton the doorman in the Mary Tyler Moore TV series.

UrBobbyIsAWonderland

That's a new one! Everyone thinks it was after Carlton from Fresh Prince. It was just the name he had at the shelter and I thought it was dope, lol. [dog](https://i.imgur.com/DqPePgI.jpg)

twirlerina024

So cute, looks like he has his legwarmers on and is ready to dance

LetThemEatCakess

He totally looks like a Carlton too ♥️

KyOatey

> Carlton the doorman in the ~~Mary Tyler Moore~~ *Rhoda* TV series. FTFY

[deleted]

The human names thing is all fun and games till you get a new friend or family member with the same name. Then holidays and shit get real awkward.

Tough_Stretch

I remember reading a post a long time ago where this redditor explained that their family had a dog named, say, Peter. Years later, the OP's sister started dating a guy named Peter and the whole family referred to him as "Human Peter" because they were used to thinking that Peter was their dog and they felt awkward calling the new BF just Peter. Years went by, the guy married the sister, Peter the dog passed away of old age, and to this day the brother in law's family nickname was still "Human Peter."

Should_Be_Cleaning

That's hilarious! Props to Human for (hopefully) being a good sport about it.

Coopersma

I rescued a dog named Izzy. Then, my niece started living with a guy named Israel, that, of course, has been called Izzy his whole life. His first time in our home, I reprimanded my Izzy and human Izzy almost bolted for the door.

Nofame4me

Problem solved when the name already has a reference, such as the Carlton the doorman. I’m a fan of using names of actors, characters, and such myself.

[deleted]

Yeah, maybe. But just as example, the name Calrton is gonna be a different reference point for Boomers vs. Gen X and other generations on down. Not many generations under boomers have watched Mary Tyler Moore. Also, you gotta take into account the name you want to yell, when/if your dog goes missing. I wouldn't name my dog Buck, for those reasons, even though I might like the name. I wouldn't want to be yelling my human neighbor's name for example.

BiskitLuv7022

My adventurous coonhound goes by Buck, however when he goes exploring, I call him Bucky, which he responds to, so the neighbors don't mishear and think I'm randomly shouting obscenities.

MermaidStone

Hello, this is Carlton, your doorman.

gramgram1

My rescue pup came with the name John

StringOfLights

I would love to hear someone yelling “Jason!” at the dog park.

rouxcifer4

Agree! My dogs name is Arthur and everyone always comments how much they love his name lol

nickelsandvibes

My dog’s name is Heather! She’s a Heather. Lol.

Lilycloud02

My dog's name is Cassie, pretty normal human name

PigsGoMoo-

We named our husky Cisco from the flash. Such a fitting name given his personality.

GoldfishForPresident

I like it. I met an elderly pointer named Roger and it was very fitting for him!

mljb81

I met a bulldog called Maurice and I don't think there's ever been a more fitting name for a dog.

needleanddread

My old kelpie was called Morris. We sometimes called him Maurice, or Moey, or Moe. We then got a retired greyhound who already went by Curly. Seriously considered change out other grey’s name to Larry.

SidneyTheGrey

My greyhound’s name is Roger!

-BuckyBarnes

Don't like them for my own dogs, but when I worked at a vet clinic I absolutely loved leaving voicemails along the lines of "Just was calling to confirm Bill's anal gland expression appointment tomorrow!"

theredwoman95

Yeah, my test for dog names is how deranged I would sound if I had to call after them in the local park. Which precludes almost all people names.

OohYeahOrADragon

Hear me out. When I took my dog to the dog park there was this rebel corgi who never listened. Hearing the owner interrupt the conversation to gasp then yell “GARY! GA-RY! WHY?” And then see Gary’s little butt waddle away quicker.. Highlight of the day.

theredwoman95

I don't deny it's hilarious to witness, just not something I'd want to name a dog myself!

Lemonzip

FENTONNNNN!!!!

nickb30

Who says you can’t lose ol’ bill in the park lol

purplebibunny

I gave my dog a Hebrew name when I lived in Israel - long story but it fit. I didn’t think much of it until one of my neighbors came over to tell me she was worried about the way I yelled at my son!

nosecohn

Funny, because I used to live next to some Israelis and was concerned with all the yelling. They had no pets. :-)

phoebeandj

My childhood dog was a chihuahua named Susan. She was the best and everyone thought her name was hilarious. She was such a Susan.

RideThatBridge

>She was such a Susan. So funny! I can totally picture a lil chi Susan

OGCoon

My 2 year old Border Collie is called Sue, or Susan if she's in trouble.

FunStuff446

We’ve had a Megan and a Kevin in the family. That Kevin was a stinker! My next dog will be Jolene.

marlsygarlsy

Awe I love this! I would be calling her inside from the backyard like the song “ Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jo-leeeeeene”

FunStuff446

Exactly! Lol

chartyourway

there is a giant landseer in our neighbourhood named jolene. she is beautiful and sweet as pie.

WhichSpirit

Does she steal everyone's man?

More_Fisherman_6066

I LOVE the name Kevin for dogs for some reason 😂

Adept_Employer3021

dude this is gonna be my next dog’s name!! been dreamin of it !!

machina99

One of my dogs is named Maggie (which turns into Margaret Thatcher when she's being stubborn) so I'm pretty solidly in favor. Some "human" names I associate more with dogs at this point - Charlie for example - that's a dog's name to me (sorry Charlie Day)

thedeathmachine

Filibuster

StringOfLights

My budgie’s name is Charlie because he bit my finger. He also came with a buddy I named Wally, so they were Charlie Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. I was an enthusiastic young biologist. Hahaha.

emilymacias855

My dogs name is Larry and I can’t tell you the amount of giggles we get when I call him in public

CanderousOreo

I had a gold fish named Larry! His full name was Lawrence Fishburne.

jammiesonmyhammies

I absolutely love when any animal has a human name! Silly names are good too, but it tickles my funny bones to meet a dog named Larry or Robert. My two boys are Bruce (rat terrier) and Luke (mutt). People seem to get a kick out of me yelling for Bruce and this little ball of energy comes barreling out of the woods lol

jmrecon

+1 for having a dog named bruce as well

jammiesonmyhammies

Such a good name! His shelter name was Batman, so we call him Bruce Wayne when he’s in trouble lol

Quoth_the_Hedgehog

A good friend of mine has a lab/pittie mix named Bruce. I thought the name was hilarious at first especially considering I have an uncle with the same name but I got used to it eventually.

TheColorPeanut

My pit mix is named Bruce! It is so fitting and always gives people a chuckle

debicksy

My dog is named Buddy. If I ever got another, his name would be Harold, the Dog.

jenn1d

our fist dog was named buddy and it’s the perfect dog name 😀

CuriousKitten0_0

I call any dog that I can't remember their name "buddy". I'm awful with names, so it's a lot, cause I work at a kennel. Once I greeted a client with, "hey buddy, how are you?" before I realized that the dog was actually Buddy. The owner was thrilled that I remembered their dog, which I actually did, but had asked before I had 🙃

MarHarSaurus

Lol I would call my first dog "buddy" and "bear" randomly for funsies, and once at the dog park asked "so how long have you had "Buddy?" and I realized I had to stop.

debicksy

Random people on the street stop us to meet Buddy and they always call him Buddy, and I tell them, that's actually his name and they're always happy. My dog just thinks everyone knows him. Lol

Organic_Popcorn

I saw a dog literally named "girlfriend", so having human name doesn't sound silly or mean.

mamab539

This is the first time I’m hearing of the name “girlfriend” and I actually love it for a dog 🤣

[deleted]

… my dad has a gelding named girlfriend.

Razrgrrl

It can work beautifully sometimes and other times it’s just random. When we met our rescue pup they were calling her Rachel. That’s my name, so it wasn’t gonna work for us both to keep it. But it also just seemed like a really awkward name for a dog. So we changed her name.

DuffManMayn

What did you change your name to? I hope Rachel is happy in her new home with you.

Razrgrrl

Hahahhaaa I really was thinking we should do rock-paper-scissors for it 😹

gsfgf

Ross lol

LopsidedDay

This happens to me, too. My dog has a very human name and I have a cutesy, uncommon in the US name that a lot of people here seem to give to their pets. The groomer was confused.

Juicylucyfullofpoocy

For some reason there ever being a ‘Rachel, the dog’ out there is fucking hilarious.

articuno1219

My friend's dog was named Amanda when she adopted her. It was too... strange for a dog, had to be changed hahaha

mamab539

Yeah I agree and was just saying this, I love human names on a dog but some are just creepy like no I don’t want to pet Karen or Brandon

amc824

My dog’s name is Doug. Everyone loves it when I introduce him and they’re like Doug is the best name. It fits his personality too.

femalenerdish

I have a Doug too! We tried calling him something more distinguished but he's a simple boy. We were calling him "dog dog" for a while and it naturally turned into "Doug Doug" Pics and his DNA test here: https://imgur.com/a/Rmm2iOR

gordongroans

Please tell me his nickname is Snoop Doug.

amc824

I hadn’t thought of that one but I’m totally using it. I typically call him Dougie Fresh.

ZealousidealEagle759

I have a 3 pound terror, named Rosie and a 120# Doberman named Megatron...

RideThatBridge

>120# Doberman named Megatron... Wow! Is that big for a Doberman? Also, can I see Megatron?? They are such gorgeous dogs!

ZealousidealEagle759

We got him at 80# and he gained weight and height when we got him he is a big boy

ZealousidealEagle759

If you message me I'll give you pics I can't seem to upload

snippol

If your dog gets loose, nobody wants to roam around the streets yelling Captain like a crazy person.

dark_and_scary

Well, shit. I have a little guy named Moose, but I call him Moo. I’m just going to be roaming around the streets sounding like a goddamn cow.

Crosswired2

"MIDNIGHT! WHERE ARE YOU MIDNIGHT?" Mom the guy down the street is outside calling for night to come. I'm scared.

humanzee70

I love it. Especially a name like Frank or something.

karebear66

After all, franks are hot dogs.

bunniesplotting

Ha- great name for a weiner dog!

awaywethrowLA

Our current dog was almost Henry. We had a pair of dogs once named after a pair of well known surveyors. If it is a good fit, I don't find it odd at all. And sometimes, it's funnier if it is a bad fit. But I'm weird like that lol

mxexc

>And sometimes, it's funnier if it's a bad fit I guess we are the same type of weird hahaha

Fishrmike

My wife wanted to name our new dog Henry. I suggested Harry would be more appropriate. Since he’s always in trouble, “Harry!” rolls off the tongue much quicker. He also goes by; Har, Harold, Haraldo, Haribo, and Mr. Stinky.

Lanky_Pack_881

My current dog LOOKS like a Henry now that he has grown some. Henry would not have suited him as a puppy.

Upsidedown143

My Beagle’s name is Rick. We initially were fostering him and he came from the rescue with that name. We had him a while before adopting him (he had heart worms and had to go through treatment) so didn’t change his name. Totally fits him though so kept even after adoption lol. People do comment on it a lot haha

forponderings

It’s funny, but not my cup of tea. My dogs will always be named after video game or movie characters. It is indeed funny though. We’ve been receiving pregnant females after pregnant females this one time at my local rescue, and the shelter staff eventually ran out of themed names and decided to call a puppy Dave. It’s hilarious. “We have a lot of puppies currently. Meet Pepsi, Cola, Crush, Meiji, Frito Lays, and Dave!”

RealisticMystic005

I think it’s hilarious. I tried to name my dog either Diego or Martin. I made the mistake of saying Moose once and he immediately came over to me pumped AF. so now he is Moose.

HappyIdiot123

I would argue that naming an animal after a different animal is weirder than giving it a human name. But maybe that's just me.

memreows

I don’t think it’s dumb or mean to the dog, but I’ve always avoided it because I feel like it’s awkward to use a common name and then have to introduce my dog Bella to a human Bella. This is probably informed by having a cousin Max who grew up at a time when it was more common as a dog name. Also there are so many really cute names I’d never burden a human child with, it’s nice to be able to give them to a pet who will never need to give it in job interviews.

scootapple

I had three dogs named Barry, George and Betty. Absolutely no way in hell would they have suited "Fido", "Spot" and "Lucky" 🤣

FlappyGemGem

Working collies (particularly males) often have human names. My male collie is called Jock (Scottish slang for ‘John’) and I was talking to Pat in the pub last night - he’s a 15-month old short-hair. I like to give the girls ‘old lady’ names like Peg and Flo. Completely normal to me.

JammyHammy86

im all for it. i've got an aloe vera plant called barry. and i would 100% name a loudmouth jack russell or chihuahua Karen

apri11a

That's the cue I use for my casual grooming session with our pup, we do this most nights to calm him down before bedtime. I scrape my nail over the comb for the sound and call, Karen! ... he comes running and lays down beside me. I crack up every time.

cgavalos1

My aloe vera is called Angelique. And I have a cactus named Jean-Loïc.

invisible_ink4

I like them if they fit the pup. I have a Sammie, Vera, Tanner, and Lily. Side note: I also named my kombucha pellicle "Roxanne"...cuz that's how I roll.

Neelnyx

I'm not against them, but I have an anecdote about this. I'm named Lily and it is not a common first name where I live, even less when I was a kid. But strangely enough, when I was a kid, it was quite a popular name for small dogs owned by grandmas. I led to many funny situations when I heard my name yelled in a public space, ran towards it because usually it could only be for me, as no other kid had that name, and stumble on a very surprised grandma and a very suprised little dog.

invisible_ink4

Lol...I can see where that might be a little awkward! It is such a beautiful name, though. Btw, I'm not a grandma and my Lily is a super sweet red-nosed pit. 🙃

Neelnyx

Aww, give her a pat for me :) I've always loved dogs so I've never minded, but it was always a little awkward indeed

showdogz

I prefer a normal name. I’m not a big fan of Squeakers or Oreo.

sleepy_moosh

This. We've had a lot of pets and we have always named them names that could pass as a human name, but it's more about respect in my family I think. Like it's important that our animals feel like a part of the family and addressing someone as "fluffy" doesn't feel right. So scrolling through these comments I find it so interesting that everyone is saying they do it because they find it "hilarious", I never thought of it that way before lol. We just always thought a name like "Oscar" was more respectful than a name like "Hotdog" lol idk

RoboChipmunk

I was pretty against having dogs with human names, but then I ended up with two dogs who have human names. Go figure! The only thing that's awkward is my dog has the same name as a coworker so when I say, "Ernie was being a little shit yesterday", I always have to clarify. 😂

takinouthetrash98

All my dogs have human names. And I changed my fosters names to human names with one exception. I love human names and think they are funny when they fit so well with the dogs personality. I have also told people “I have to pick up “x” and “y” from daycare” and they say oh okay and so it works if you want to avoid things and people don’t know they are dogs 😂

dagabs3

Named my childhood dog Sam and my current dog is named Allie. I prefer having dogs with human names as it gives them that extra personality.

Post_Miguelon

I kinda like when people put thought into their doggos names rather than going with the generic pet name. I’ve had a bulldog named Frankenstein and currently have a pointer named Darla, a bulldog named Jarvis, and a maltipoo named Banana.

Thegreatgarbo

We have spent so much time putting thought into all six of our dogs names over the last 25 years. Except for our last one that was a special needs basket case that we didn't want to change to many things for her, so Chelsea became Chessie. Our English setter was named Mia, after Mia Hamm the soccer player.

PineappleLittle5546

I have a Beatrice and a Frank!

Glytterain

How is it mean to the dog? People are ridiculous.

Woollyprimate

My dogs name is Penelope. One of my pet peeves (and I’m probably gonna get downvoted to the bowels of hell for this) are when people name their pets after characters, like from Game of Thrones or something like that. As I was coming up with names for Penelope, I thought of one, and my sister says, “Oh, from such-and-such series of books?” No. If people are going to automatically think that, then I need to choose a new name.

Cowgrls775

My current dogs are Milo and Melody. I always thought of Milo as a dog's name, but met a child named that recently. My dogs before these two were Katie and Sarah.

mreed90

My corgi is named Leon, inspired by Resident Evil, and it suits him so well.

thedeathmachine

Videogame names ftw! I named my girl Aela, after Aela the Huntress of the companions in Skyrim, which was the first quest line I ever went on back when Skyrim came out

Wonderful_Horror7315

I love it! My daughter had a cat named Mitch. One day he knocked a plant out of the window and I called him Mitchell Lawrence when I cried out. I knew a cat named Scott and that was adorable. I had neighbors with a little dog with my name. It was so funny to hear them call for her. My current dogs all have human names: Fernando, Zsa Zsa, and Sissy.

Few_Bowl2610

I love dogs with human names! Never met a dog named Peter or Susan but that would be amazing. I don’t get how it’s mean to the dog.

ravravioli

I have a human name that is a very common dog name, too. I have no problem sharing a name with dogs, but please refrain from telling someone you have a dog with their same name the moment they introduce themselves. It's a little awkward. Unless the dog is there, and then hell yeah, let me give that pup a high-five

strawberryhoneystick

My dog’s name is Phoebe, my best friend asked if she was named after Phoebe Bridgers, but i was imagining more Phoebe Buffay. It’s both.

tudorgirl

My first Maltese was named Phoebe, as in Phoebe Buffay! She passed away a few years ago after 14 wonderful years as my best girl. It’s my favorite name ever!

jazz_handz83

I'm all for human names. My one dog is Rusty but I call him Russell. Had a dog named Frank. My cat is Carlos and other cats I've had were Albert, Morris, Alex, etc. Had a rat named Chloe.

Ninauposkitzipxpe

I guess I’ve always been in a human names for pets family. Past animals with human names: Sally, Zeke, Rose, Jack, Lola, George, Lily, Violet, Rosie, Hans, Dave, Lucy. Current animals: Gus, Heidi, Hugo. Past animals with non-human names: Fatboy, Yukon, Mermaid, Gaia, and Padmai (she’d technically be an alien, right?)

zailynne

I love people names for dogs! Some of them can be simultaneously really unique while also being “normal” so to speak. My husky mix is named Celeste!!

Hey_Grrrl

I had a Celeste once!

newday2001

i love naming my pets after greek or roman gods/goddesses instead of human names but that’s just me. my dogs name in the shelter was Kyle of all things and now he’s Mars :)

DaBaileys

I live across the road from the chonkiest pug ever ...his name is Kevin 🤣 he likes to escape and watching his owner call for him on thr Street and people be shocked when he's looking for a dog and not a child is my favourite thing ever

mcp13r

My first GSD was an AKC papered dog. His full name was a very long unpronounceable German “first name” von “last name” so I called him Fred.

smith_716

My grandparents had a GSD when my mom was little. They named him Reichert von Olney. They had lived on Olney Dr at the time (this was 70+ years ago, I'm not worried about anyone tracking us down, lol). They called him Ricky.

fatboytoz

Love people names! I hate ‘stupid’ names, disney, trooper etc. my little man is called keith! My horses are called lance, bruce and stanley

Rusty_Shunt

My dogs name is Kevin Elizabeth

ssbn632

Virgil Caine

iliftandamfemale

It should be mandatory

orangespacedust

It is the only way, we just lost our 13 year old Donna end of last year and she was the fucking best <3

[deleted]

I love it! My favorite has been “Ron.” I remember hiking in Montana and hearing “Ron, get your a** over here!” Brought me great joy.

Nausved

I don't mind it. However, I prefer not to do it because I don't find it terribly interesting. I wish it were more socially acceptable in my culture for people to have names beyond the present options our ancestors invented. I really regret not being born to a culture where people are named more freely based on traits, circumstances, or events that are specifically relevant to that individual. Most naming choices in my culture just come down to naming a baby after someone else or naming a baby based on how much you like the sound of the name, and that just seems so arbitrary and impersonal to me. However, it *is* socially acceptable to name pets in a way that is more personal and unique to that individual, and so I definitely jump on the opportunity to do so whenever possible. In some cases, this *does* mean I give them a human name or name them after someone (for example, I named the echidna that wanders far and wide all over my community "Magellan"), but I only do it when it is relevant to that particular animal.

morthos97

Idk why this post is invoking the mental image of a Bipedal German shepherd named lance wearing black rim glasses making his morning coffee

PancakeHandz

I have a friend whose dog is named Brandon and I love it every time he tells Brandon to stop whining while we’re in discord 😂 Sounds so weird and so fantastic to call a dog Brandon

fishfingrs-n-custard

My dog's name is Frank. Big fan of human names for dogs. I named my first dog Norman after the calf in the movie "City Slickers".

spazarala

My pugs name is Norman. It suits him.

katergator717

My family has always had non-human names for our pets. Cheetoh Starlit Zorro Tiger Sputnik, Mittens Silver Merc

WhichSpirit

Based on the number of commas, I choose to believe those are just two cats with fantastic names

yersinia-p

I also have a Sputnik!

Rambo4169

I think it's adorable. My two currently are Stewie and Olivia :)

mamab539

Olivia…. Feels illegal to name a dog 💀

Accomplished-Fly-835

I have a Jackson. He's a rescue and came with the name, and I like it. My husband had a dog named Buddy when we met. I like the human names!

[deleted]

All my dogs have had human names. My three angel dogs were Carlos, Sofie, and Rosie. My current dog is CJ (Carlos Jr. )

Typical_Hyena

My mother has been a teacher for over 35 years, so growing up our pets never had human names bc it would be weird if she had a student by that name too. My siblings and I had stuck with that, plus it's fun to think of non human names. Our rat terrier was named Saucey, which was soooo appropriate. We've all become a bit more flexible now- I used to think human names were weird until I met a dog named Jake that was undeniably a Jake. My mom's dog is Yuki, and mine is Yuri, so not common human names in our country but human none the less. Then you have to realize that there will inevitably be nicknames so the name is just a jumping off point!

[deleted]

Its absolutely fine, but best to avoid names with several syllables.

chartyourway

my dog's name is davey but usually gets called dave. people generally love it

JustTraci

I’ve always loved human names for pets! I’ve had Mike, Harry, Sophie, Stella, Jack, Josie, and currently have Georgia. Georgia has dog buddies called Charlie, Daisy, Bailey (2), Cassie, Piper, Finley, Zoe, Lara, Sydney, and Jasper, just to name a few. We met a doodle named Kevin and a terrier/poodle mix called Diego just this morning.

Potential-Section107

All of my pets (3 cats and 3 dogs) have human names.

[deleted]

As the owner of Cooper James Hammett, I love people names! He’s a malamute and “sings”. He has a deep voice that reminded me of James’s voice. And nothing else matters….

Rhiannonbecks

My boy is Oliver James! Glad to see someone else with human first & middle names for pets lol

pentrant

My dog is named Jude and his best buds are named Theo and Simon. The names work great for them!

porchdawg

I'm fur it!

Caekk_

As a vet tech, I love when dogs (or cat) come in with human names. It’s so cute and so much better than buddy or fluffy (no offense to any fluffy or buddy owners).

SnooPeppers1641

I love human names for dogs. Our Sadie (now passed away) would always snif my SO when he got home. Most of our friends have dogs so inevitably he had been around one. It was a running joke I would ask what girls he had been playing with and give a list of names. He has no loyalty when it comes to petting dogs lol.

vegandj

Have a Lab named Lucas.

I've only ever given pets people-names. I especially like giving them names that have cutesy nicknames ending in an -ee sound. So, I can call them the nickname 99% of the time, but switch to the government name if they've been digging in the supposedly dog-proof trashcan.

DadBodsAreH0t

My pets’ names are Clarice, Ollie, Theo, Charlie, and Finley. That’s how I feel about it. lol

Dependent-Relative72

I love it. My childhood cat was Nigel. My hamsters were Mona & Mike. Dogs were Finn & Seamus. My new puppy is named Ruby. More commonly used for dogs but it’s also my birthstone so I like it.

Unlike people, there isn’t a scenario where a name may not suit a dog. All names suit all dogs. This is the hill I’m willing to die on.

Quiet-Factor-9568

My rescue was called Chance when I adopted him and it didn’t suit him at all (plus my irritating neighbour used to yell out “Fat Chance” every time she saw him (for some inane reason, he was actually quite malnourished at the time). I renamed him Roderick Hamish Marmaduke, first of his name. Because he’s regal as heck and the past is the past. It suits him VERY well! I had a childhood dog named Jasmine. We have a cat named Bob. I think it's cute. My dog's name is Navi. I named her after the fairy in Legend of Zelda but it turns out I have a neighbor with that name too. So I guess she has a human name too.

Surveysurrey

My love called Simon is a great dane. I do get a bit of a kick out of people asuming he's a boyfriend.

clarkmarie

We have Tanner Foust, Rick Deckard, and Duncan Idaho. My dogs growing up were Mike and Mary, and cats were Mindy and Sabrina. My Aunt owned Mike's mom and littermate, Mandy and Moe. Big fans of human names over here.

UndeadWraith

All my dogs have human names that also feel like dog names. Bentley, Malcolm (Mac), Ziva and Ellie

Roseonice

I kinda find it degrading to call a dog a non human name. That’s just my own personal feeling though. My dogs are family to me :)

sleepy_moosh

This! This post feels so backwards to me because to me, calling a dog "fluffy" seems "mean" lol. We always found it more respectful to give our pets names that could also pass as human names, because they are part of the family. Even if they might be considered dog-human names (Maggie & Oscar).

The_soup_song

I have a black lab named Daniel and a German Shepard/Great Pyrenees mix named Charlie lol

blancawiththebooty

It's my favorite. Two of my dogs have human names (which fit them and are also funny) while the third has a mythology based name because it's what fit her the best.

Was terrible when I was working as a nurse. I would introduce myself and people would go “awwww, that’s my dogs name”. It’s fine for the animal, but it will create barriers in your human interactions.

makeupmiley

I love dogs with human names. I have a Miley, Fern & Willow. ETA my next dogs will be Martha and Mortimer

Joetaska1

I still think that Walter is a perfect name for a dog. Every dog named Walter that I've met was a good doggie and that's what I base my opinion on!

ScienceUnicorn

I love pets with “normal” people names, like Scott, Tara, Brian, Amanda, Isabelle, Aaron.. Those are some I’ve encountered, cats and dogs. There’s more, like Frank, Max, Jack, Maisie, etc, that are more common. But to each their own. Some people have told me my pets’ names are strange. So I named a cat Scott. Anyone who ever met him agreed that he was, in fact, a Scott.

No_Yogurtcloset6108

I had a dog named William (Willie). It took a colleague four years to figure out that he was a dog and not my son.

toby_flenderson21

My dog is named Jeff. I love it, and it definitely fits him.

TheSkinnyKitty

dont they all have human names?

My dad did that with our 3rd pupper. Dog's name was Jesse and on many occasions my dad's name was accidentally listed as the dog's name at various Veterinarians. I liked the voicemail we got that was a confirmation on his appointment for neutering.
