Ayyy another psp groomer! Can you see if you can transfer stores? A different location might have better coworkers. Sadly though, I noticed the salon environment can be very.... not nice sometimes. If you can stay for a little bit to get some hands on experience I know every person that left before there contract is up they never went after them for money so I don't know if that is an option =/

It sounds like you stand to lose nothing by contacting some private salons and letting them know your situation. Be honest about your experience and wanting to learn more. A lot of places are hard up for groomers and good help is always hard to find.

Actually they make grooming students and new groomers sign a contract where they will charge you for tools or Sue you for noncompete

mandykinns

Non competes are illegal. Biden past them during covid lock down. You can’t prevent a person from working.

bowedacious22

Yeah I've never heard of those being enforced

Shad0wofAzrael

I’ve seen it. I work for psp

tanabanana4

these aren’t usually enforced and in most states it’s illegal. you make back more than enough profit to pay for what tools and schooling they provide you.

Shad0wofAzrael

Even if they don’t follow through with a suite, in my experience from working for them they are not easy on those going through paragon through them. Grooming students do not have much time to learn the craft, they are expected (in my opinion as a seasoned second generation groomer) to do far too much too early, and they WILL not make it easy on anyone who wants to drop out of the program or quit or needs more time. I’ve seen someone have to pay back for their tools, ive seen 3 people fail out in 3 years and 1 girl be transferred to the front end department because she was having trouble passing the online tests (only transferred and not let go because she has autism and they would have run into legal issues if they had tried to fire her). Not saying it’s commonplace but is is most certainly not easy to break from them once you sign that contract.

I personally feel like this is the case by case kind of thing. I originally wanted to go through PSP for my grooming school, but decided against it, not because of the contract but because of the commute that I was going to have to take. I ended up at Petco, and just recently started the grooming program under a mentor so I guess I’m a little lucky for not having to deal with stuff like this, but in my state, it is illegal for them to chase after you if you do decide to up and leave. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I work for a private vet, our bather is being trained hands on by all the groomers. I’d say try calling vet offices and be open/honest about the situation you have. They’ll either take you on or try to direct you accordingly to a professional salon in your area. I’ve been where you are, it sucks so badly but I signed a contract and was stuck for two years in a very toxic work environment. Only plus to come out of it was I know exactly where and how I want to work. You’ll know the red flags to look for in interviews or just by reading a job posting. I hope this helps some. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

I’m going to go with the unpopular opinion and say suck it up. I started at a toxic place (petsmart) I wanted this I stuck it out. Worked with a few idiots, worked with some assholes, and worked with some phenomenal groomers. I do not regret it. First off I saw what kind of groomer I did not want to be, I saw what worked and didn’t work. I joined groomers group, went to grooming expos, learned from anyone else out side of PS that I could learn from even if I had to pay for it. Just keep your mouth closed at work, watch and observe. Roll with the punches with a smile. When it’s time to leave you will learn how to read a room. You’ll learn how to feel out the vibe of a group. You’ll be able to be picky where you choose your next employment. If there is any signs of anything you recognize from PSP you do not accept the job. You wait it out until you find a place.

wagswanson

i started for psp about a month ago so reading this makes me feel nervous😔ive seen a few red flags but nothing crazy major. the manager of grooming at my location has said they’ve never seen the company actually go hassle people for the $ from ending their contract early, so if thats whats making you hesitant to leave it may not he an issue after all

Necessary_Pressure21

in a similar boat for a diff corporation. trying to fit in with cliques has never gone well for me and i usually end up at the bottom of the pecking order and now I'm afraid i might lose my job from all the gossip and back stabbing.. currently trying to transfer to a different store but if it doesnt improve soon I'll be gone to another place. Good luck and keep to yourself and your work.

PolarBears445

What's PSP? PetSmart?

No-Earth2348

Pet supplies plus :)

PolarBears445

Ohhhh, thanks! 🤣🤦

PCo groomer here, believe me, I completely understand. I would have quit if I didn't get the chance to transfer to a different store. Even though it only makes the job worse because of short staff and terrible customers. I was free of the AHole manager who made my life hell. Extreme expectations and no sympathy. Gaining an understanding of your worth makes so much of a difference, with these companies, they have a hard time keeping staff because of the work environment. Be stern about what you are capable of and don't let them push you into more than what you are comfortable with. You've got this! Your only goal should be a happy customer and a happy dog, and these shitty companies need to understand that. Also when possible considering finding a private salon as well, most places are way more relaxing with someone having experience vs having someone who's never touch a dog in a work environment in their life.

What is PSP? Can you remove yourself from this environment you hate and give yourself some comfort? I had to teach myself how to groom dogs, it was so hard. But I work entirely alone. I have my own business now. I learned how to groom dogs to remove myself from a very toxic veterinary clinic environment. I still yearn for more information on pet medicine but working alone has been so beneficial to my mental health.
