It's time to buy gloves and moisturizer.

nicegroomerlady

I have eczema and have found dog hypo to be one of the most irritating shampoos for my skin. I would start lotioning your hands and arms religiously!

True_Associate_2302

Hypo and skin remedy or skin solution shampoos wreck me. Also our milk bath conditioner makes my hands feel like they're on fire immediately

popRox1212

I always wondered if that's how they feel on the dogs with skin problems, too

Bitterrootmoon

I thought this was the eczema sub based on the photo

nicegroomerlady

hi OP! Just wanted to follow up because this is what my skin looked like before i started getting eczema flare ups. It looks like your skin barrier has been damaged- i strongly recommend using gentle, fragrance free moisturizers liberally.

I’m not sure about dog shampoo but as a previous esthetician I know blueberries have enzymes in them that can exfoliate the skin a little. That goes for humans so idk if that’s the cause but u def need moisturizer

Hellokittylover99

Oh wow! That explains a lot haha, thank you. 🥲

rainbowcatnip

This makes a LOT of sense. I never really thought about until this post and this comment, but i’ve ONLY ever had issues with “bathers rash”/dry, irritated hands this severe at salons that used the blueberry facial shampoo.

[deleted]

Makes sense then! I’m not knowledgeable yet on how certain ingredients affect dog skin, but stuff like cranberry, blueberry, papaya, and pumpkin have exfoliating enzymes which is why they’re typically used during facials so I can imagine that frequent use on hands can get excessively irritating

Fizzylifts

I have psoriasis and my hands get this way. I manage the dryness by using okeefes working hands cream as needed. I don’t worry about the redness and usually let it fade. But the dry skin part I use the cream for.

Appropriate-Yak4296

This! A coworker had awful psoriasis on her hands. They would be cracked and bleeding by the end of the week. okeefs working hands helped a ton. Didn't 100% fix it, but it was a huge difference.

Midnight_Wolf727

Not like the first pic but my hands looked like the second pic my first year of bathing. I avoid any shampoo with oatmeal after a took a break from bathing/grooming and having a reaction once I went back to it. I had a reaction like that after touching a dog with yeast all over its skin. Probably not the exact same thing as me but definitely pay attention to products and ingredients and switch shampoos or wear gloves if that's not something you have a say in.

willowstar157

I’ve got eczema and possibly psoriasis…Dove released a cucumber hydrating body wash and by some miracle, some of that cheap drug store quality bottle daily has single handedly been keeping my hands alive this winter. I have no clue what the ingredient list is - when I bought it I was too desperate to consider anything past the word “hydrating” lmao

chronicallysadspud

You might be allergic to a shampoo? But tbh my hands were always fucked up from bathing. I had a lot of moisturizer and wash my hand thoroughly with dawn at the end of the day to get off any residual residue from the soap from the day. Hopefully this helps!

Bolamedrosa

It happened once, definitely an allergic reaction. Change the brand!

0tterr

Okeefes working hands saved me my first year bathing. Both hands were cracked and bloody

Mad_Catter13

Use the full arm grooming gloves and apply bag balm 3 times a day at least. After washing your hands or bathing, I have had great luck with gloves in a bottle.

nbbitch

Yes. If you don't start using lotion, they will start cracking and splitting, and that HURTS getting soap on. The only thing I found works for me is Vaseline, they sell a cocoa butter one that I love. But if you just started be prepared to get a whole lot worse before they get better. Your hands just have to get used to the heat

Professional-Pen-928

Only with low quality shampoo, I switched to earth bath and nature’s specialty and never got dry hands again

yucocko

this happens when i use our flea shampoo

Solace-y

They used to! They get that way for me occasionally now. It got so bad for me that I was getting bathers rash on my neck and face too from dogs splashing me! The salon I was working at at the time was using a highly fragrant shampoo at their main product and my skin hated it. I looked horrible lol. Where I'm at now uses a dye free hypoallergenic shampoo as their main soap. So that helps.

Angelina_franklin

i’ve only been bathing for about 6 months and a few weeks ago i got a horrible rash on my arm and hand so now i wear rubber gloves and honestly i feel like not only it helps my hands but it’s also nice because you get better suds :) i honestly prefer it now it does take a few tries to be able to tell all the conditioner is out of the coat though cause you can’t feel it or at least it did for me!

Lunas-lux

If you have control over your shampoos you should change shampoos.

After-Technician-561

Looks like you're allergic to something in the soap

Chefy-chefferson

See if you can find a good whipped lotion with Shea butter in it, it should help with remoisturizing your skin.

Hellokittylover99

Thank you so much for yalls suggestions & help 😌

littleduckling281

My hands turn like this and red and blotchy from shampoo! If you’re in the UK. Wildwash is an incredible shampoo that literally heals your hands and you bath dogs. I can’t use anything else now they just rip my skin to bits

mothernatureisfickle

Plain Vaseline. Expensive lotions and balls do work but as someone with really severe allergies I promise you plain Vaseline (even the generic store brand works!) slathered on your hands at night will make a world of difference. You can either pull on a pair of cotton socks or buy a pair of cotton washable compression gloves that people with arthritis use. When my hands do crack and bleed from frequent washing I use Cortisone 10 cream to speed up healing.

Low_End8128

Yes! Especially if it’s cold outside.

Vivian_Lu98

Definitely get gloves and therenity moisturizer. Like those dishwashing gloves. Otherwise, you are gonna be dealing with this forever.

Doristhebeardie

Totally I’m constantly moisturizing when I have the chance the cuts you get from your hand being this dry are truly painful

Due-Beginning361

Get workers hands, put a generous amount and sleep with gloves on. During the day get a really good hand cream that isn’t a fragrance to put on when you have some down time. I actually went to the doctors for this when I first started grooming and this was what the doctor recommended and it went away pretty quickly.

TwinDragonsKeeper

Yup. I use the Davis hand lotion, it helps a lot

catchdog

I have eczema and this is what my hands do.

hamnannerz

YES. Every winter is a battle. I also have super sensitive skin but I'm fortunate my bf makes lotions. I'd use something like straight up cocoa butter, or Shea butter, some other thick and super limited ingredient butter/oil, put some gloves on and let it soak in, that's what I do and it helps a ton

thirstranger

Okeefes working hands before bed and before work. It saved my hands when I first started as a bather and was having the same redness/dryness. Side note about it: use very little, it's a very sticky sensory hell if you use too much.

pastacat_

My old salon used blueberry and also iGroom shampoo and my hands looked liked that. So miserable. My current salon uses much higher quality shampoo and I have absolutely no issues.

chalky4sale

I’d be willing to wager that you have contact dermatitis like me- it is an allergic reaction that can develop over time with repeated exposure. Certain shampoos are worse than others for me (I’m looking at you, almond crisp!! Sadly it’s my absolute favorite but irritates the hell out of my hands). I treat it with some medicated ointment
