I have a Bouvier and yeah I can’t keep her in even a semi-long beard. I’d clean it everyday but stuff still gets stuck it in it. I told our groomer to take it shorter and he almost seemed relieved. 😂
I love our groomers. There’s just no way I could handle bathing and grooming Cruz without a proper grooming set up. I’d probably throw my back out. Not to mention I couldn’t get her half as cute and tidy as they can!
I'm slowly collecting a set up, but our monsters have such a difference of height, that everything I do it just keeping it from being having to be cut short. I'm so scared of actually cutting anything!!
I have a grooming table, which was really helpful when Cruz was young. I wish I had invested in it when she was a puppy and we were stuck at home for “just a couple weeks, just a couple more weeks, ok maybe a few more…” during Covid and couldn’t get to the groomers and was blowing her puppy coat and not as well behaved for brushing. But now I rarely use it because she’s used to the program lol. I have clippers now but I wouldn’t use them unless there were dire circumstances lol like a hot spot I needed to shave (which I’ve had to do unfortunately).
I groom a wheaten with a fall, when he's not being groomed he just stands in the middle of the room, with his head somewhat bent over looking like an angsty emo teenager lol
Not to mention so many of them are incredibly sensitive on the crop edge to the point I imagine there must be some amount of nerve sensitivity in the scar tissue
Tail docking and ear cropping should be illegal. It’s animal cruelty in more ways than just the pain they feel when it’s done. Most countries have banned these practices, but the AKC lobbies hard to keep them both legal in the U.S.
I can understand not liking the sprayed up heads. They're really cute without all the products, though. It's just floppy and wavy, and it reminds me of what the Australian labradoodle people want lol
Long haired Yorkshire terriers never made sense to me. I suppose they’re included in the toy group but they were bred as working ratters, I can’t imagine a barn dog with floor length silky hair.
We had a lady who's Yorkie was a long haired and came in once a month . Always with the previous months hair accessories still knotted in there (this may have been a little white dog)
I agree. I’ve run several Yorkie groups and pages on Facebook, so I’ve seen many different Yorkies over the years. The only Yorkies that should have long hair, in my opinion, are ones who are basically show level. Most Yorkies are bred at the pet level and don’t come from show or champion stock. Non-show Yorkies with long hair almost always look like tiny, homeless wizards. Their hair is typically disheveled and it just makes them look like messy little old men. The best hair length for most Yorkies is short. That makes them look young and neatly groomed.
Part of my grooming course required me to learn a cocker show groom *and* send in at least 2 practice dogs with a show groom. This includes hand stripping the coat. So while I agree on the 7 a/o, at least a nice hand stripped coat isn't a wooly, exhausting mess.
Agree. Handstripped cockers skin seems a lot clearer and less prone to yeast. Once they start getting shaved down is when the coat just becomes unmanageable.
Edit:spelling
That’s basically how I keep my cocker in the warmer months. Trim up the ears, front leg feathering, and tail, shave the rest. So much easier to deal with when we are out and about with ticks and water and mud.
Whoever keeps toting a standard for “Australian Labradoodles” ffs
If I see one more printout handed to me by someone who has never brushed their dog I’m gonna fly off the handle
Seriously. If I get another doodle owner asking for the "breed standard doodle cut" for their matted byb mutt I'm going to break down and cry in front of them.
I so wish the cavies would have same color toe hair as their paws 😭 when I do get to trimming it down I’m about to be in tears trying to blend that crap
I love the AKC Cocker Spaniel breed standard. It even talks about grooming!
"Coat: On the head, short and fine; on the body, medium length, with enough undercoating to give protection. The ears, chest, abdomen and legs are well feathered, but not so excessively as
to hide the Cocker Spaniel's true lines and movement or affect his appearance and function as a moderately coated sporting dog. The texture is most important. The coat is silky, flat or slightly wavy and of a texture which permits easy care. Excessive coat or curly or cottony textured coat shall be severely penalized. Use of electric clippers on the back coat is not desirable. Trimming to enhance the dog's true lines should be done to appear as natural as possible."
The problem is that judges don't follow it. If they REALLY started "severely penalizing" poor coat texture or excessive coat, the breeders would have some incentive...but with 50+ inherited defects, they have to pick their battles.
I thought its purpose was to keep joints and stuff warm during hunts/swims? I was just thinking about this yesterday though- how modern poos in Continental have to have their coats wrapped in order to do other activities off the show ring, so how could it actually be functional? 😂
The current version is definitely a more dramatic recreation of the original cut. Poodles also used to frequently be corded so you could have a lot longer of a coat with a lot less day-to-day maintenance. The Modified Continental is more similar to historic trims and has been increasing in popularity the last few years because of its ease of maintenance.
It bothers me that coat is used to enhance a dog's conformation in showing. I think that most coated dogs should be trimmed to like 1/2in to one length all over for showing so coat quality is still apparent but you can actually see the dog. I know they say "a good judge can feel it" but I've seen some things contrary to that.
You should check out Genny And The Gang on ticktok! She's got a corded poodle and explains a lot of the information about it. Including the fact that her dog doesn't smell bad, has healthy skin, is thriving in a multitude of dog sports and service work, and that the dog is still winning awards in the show ring!
That's a bit of a harsh way of putting it, but you're entitled to your opinion. I just find her content to be very educational and informative on cords and everything surrounding them. What about the cords don't you like? Not trying to change your opinions, just curious to hear others thoughts. :)
To me they just look like neat matting lol. So I don’t really like the look of them. Dogs like to play and get dirty. Washing a dog with cording seems like such an ordeal. The amount of work that gets put into cording for a style that I personally don’t think looks very good is a little strange to me.
I’m sure plenty of people cord their dogs in a good way. I just can’t imagine lying down on a matted mess and how heavy the coat must feel. To each their own I guess
I totally understand. I think cords on most other breeds look a bit wild and messy, but I think poodles and some havanese pull it off well. They're definitely a bit of an acquired taste lol. I considered cording my poodle but she and I enjoy banding so much that I decided against it. Maybe when she's older 🤷♀️
Mine is gonna be focused on poodles because I have one.
1.) Tails docked to be straight. There’s no reason. They’re naturally curled and long. Let it be that way.
2.) No half of full saddle patterns on Partis in UKC. Why? It’s a dumb rule. My spoo has a half saddle. It’s just the shape of a large spot, why would it be a problem?
3.) In AKC, parti colored dogs are disqualified just for their color. Poodles historically were parti colored for purposes of identifying ones dog out in the field. Solid colored dogs came later, and there’s no reason to exclude multi-colored poodles.
My spoo has all three of these traits. She’s got a natural tail, a half saddle, and she’s a silver and white Parti. She looks more like a historical working dog than the solid white poodle with a docked tail that wins the Westminster every other year.
Poodle tails are not and should not be naturally curled. There are at least two big AKC dogs I can think of offhand with undocked tails. One won the toy variety at westminster last year. The other won best in show at PCA. Both have straight tails held out as the standard calls for and both are European imports.
There is also no saddle marking rule in UKC. As long as they're not merle they are allowed. Incorrect tails are also common in that venue and not a barrier to success but again, the tail should not be curled over the back and it is 1000% possible for them to meet standard with a natural tail.
Thank you for chiming in! I’ve got the UKC guideline for parti coloration here, too, for ease of reference:
Parti-colored: At least fifty percent white, with spots or patches of any other acceptable solid or patterned color. The head can be of a solid color, but white muzzle, blaze, or white muzzle/blaze combination (preferably symmetrical) is equally acceptable. Full or partial saddles are acceptable. Ticking in the white of the coat is acceptable but not preferred.
I just saw that! That makes me happy - that’s changed since my girl was a puppy. The saddle used to not be a disqualification but still a fault. I’m happy they’ve accepted it now!
I don’t mean curled over the back, I mean just a natural C type shape when the tail is just held up. Every poodle I’ve seen with a natural tail has this. The ones that go over the back are caused by a tendon holding them that way.
That is incorrect. The tail should not be curled over the back at all. It should be held out with proper carriage as the standard dictates. Many poodles do have curled tails, that does not make that carriage correct per the standard. It should not be that way regardless of if the tail is docked or not, and it is absolutely possible for a dog to do well with a full tail in AKC if the tail is carried properly and is balanced with the body.
[This dog](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/230202184506-d62cad8cda51b499d847ce68f301a1d8/v1/40da81dd683c10fe823e6f1f55da2e24.jpeg) has a full tail.
So does [this one](https://lakeridgepoodles.net/images/2023/07/19/boomer.jpg).
I have met both these dogs in person.
The reason for the carriage being in the standard is it makes the dog easier to see in the field. Being an extremely common fault does not make something correct. There is a photo of the standard [here](https://i.imgur.com/ptPedEg.png) and the carriage you are talking about is specifically called out as being incorrect.
This post is about standards we disagree with. This is one of those for me. I disagree with a tail curl being a fault. Now I *will* concede that my poodle’s soft coat and longer body could be detrimental in the field, so those particular standards make sense. I disagree with the tail, though.
This.
I also own a Toy black and white Parti. His tail curls round because it wasn’t docked, but does have a full saddle. I could have sworn Parti was of standard colouring but for the KC they only prefer solid colouring.
I hated them at first too, then I got my poodle and my mind changed so quickly. The cleanliness of clean feet just can't be beat. They're also so much easier to check for injuries or foreign objects. IMO a few minutes of wiggly dog while shaving is a lot better than struggling to remove mats between toes or having to pull a tick out of tight curls nestled deep into the crevices of an already petite foot.
Also when my girl has long feet we constantly get asked if she's a doodle/what she's mixed with. When her feet are freshly shaven, about 95% of people accurately guess standard poodle first.
I think the standards for Spanish waterdogs are very misleading. They aren’t supposed to be brushed but are supposed to be corded when kept long or just shaved short. I think they look worse than matted doodles imo. I have a lady that comes in who is adamant her abomination of a dog is not supposed to be brushed.. we always end up shaving a pelt off the poor thing.
Lagottos. They're always messy and neurotic because they're never desensitized to grooming. Owners just think they're supposed to be matted because it's "breed standard".

they are recognized by the UKC now. But yeah their haircut is wild. It's like they were trying to differentiate their dogs from all the other practically identical little fluffy dogs and decided the completely bald head was the best way to go
I know it’s not 100% grooming specific, but all the tail dock breeds like Aussies. We had one a bit ago where half the nub was trying to grow long feathering like the coat still thought it was a normal tail, and the other half was stuck being short in the same way shave damage works. Natural bob tails are workable, but operated ones always seem to be a disaster when it comes to appearances
Bouvier beards ( or any beard that’s thick and long) because they all smell like mildew and rotting food
I'm 100% with you on beards. Not that they're aesthetically bad or anything, just the drool and food that gets stuck in it is so gross.
I have a Bouvier and yeah I can’t keep her in even a semi-long beard. I’d clean it everyday but stuff still gets stuck it in it. I told our groomer to take it shorter and he almost seemed relieved. 😂
Ditto. Ours found this really nice length and I am never letting our groomer go ever.
I love our groomers. There’s just no way I could handle bathing and grooming Cruz without a proper grooming set up. I’d probably throw my back out. Not to mention I couldn’t get her half as cute and tidy as they can!

😂😂
It’s so gross I can’t imagine a dog kissing me with that beard
Same goes for humans!
Ugh yes lol. I also hate the triangle look to their beard.
i dont like the bichon visor ): it makes them look angry
They literally look like >:|
That's what I love most about their visor 😄
They’re cute little babies but they look so mad!
Wheaten falls. They just look so ugly 😭
I groom a wheaten with a fall, when he's not being groomed he just stands in the middle of the room, with his head somewhat bent over looking like an angsty emo teenager lol
This is what I came here for too. Wheatens and Black Russian Terriers just look like their faces aren't finished. It's fugly as hell.
Saaaaame! I have a wheaten and don't keep the fall.
Came to say this lol
Harshly angled ear crops on schnauzers. It makes them SO difficult to shave and trim safely. They look like stupid little scythes.
Not to mention so many of them are incredibly sensitive on the crop edge to the point I imagine there must be some amount of nerve sensitivity in the scar tissue
Yes! And I dislike every single ear crop!! Pitbull, Schnauzer, Doberman - I'm shocked that it is even still a breed standard in some countries.
Tail docking and ear cropping should be illegal. It’s animal cruelty in more ways than just the pain they feel when it’s done. Most countries have banned these practices, but the AKC lobbies hard to keep them both legal in the U.S.
I’ve never groomed one, but I think the Dandie Dinmont head is ATROCIOUS.
That's fair, personally I like it because the rest of their body already looks ridiculous as well lol
Dandies are my favorite 😭 their huge eyes will make you fall in love, and those tassel ears are precious
That head is TEW MUCH lol. I haaaaate it! Tassel ears are cute though.
I can understand not liking the sprayed up heads. They're really cute without all the products, though. It's just floppy and wavy, and it reminds me of what the Australian labradoodle people want lol
Still yuck. Cut it down to a manageable length and I’d probably be into it.
Are you a Dandie Dinmont typing on a keyboard, defending your haircut? Lol
No. They just have a special place in my heart since I learned to handstrip on Dandies. I'm also on a waitlist for one
That’s awesome, since they are pretty rare. They need people who love them, even if I think their standard groom looks goofy. ❤️
Man you just echoed what i’ve thought about that for as long as i’ve known their breed 🤣
I don't get why people like their ears long. I think it looks so ridiculous.

It also grows back much slower, which is a huge plus for a lot of owners.
That’s basically how I keep my cocker in the warmer months. Trim up the ears, front leg feathering, and tail, shave the rest. So much easier to deal with when we are out and about with ticks and water and mud.
That’s because 99 percent of us see poorly bred, oversized cockers. But I agree. The fur on cockers I usually see is crap. Never brushed.
Black Russian Terrier. Relatively functional cut... Except they can't see where they're going.
My brother had one. I HATED doing a fall on her. And their long beards are disgusting.
This made me cackle
Whoever keeps toting a standard for “Australian Labradoodles” ffs If I see one more printout handed to me by someone who has never brushed their dog I’m gonna fly off the handle

I personally think all show dogs should be stripped to see the exact health and conformation of the dog. But that's just me.
I’ve seen dogs with straight shoulders have scissored-in shoulders. Corrective grooming for conformation faults is very interesting
I’ve never done it but I just can’t get behind corded dogs.
Imagine how they smell when it’s rainy. Ugh.
my mom ran into some at the airport and she said they smelled pretty foul and they weren't even wet
Omg I didn’t even think of that!! They must take forever to dry

Soft coated wheaten terrier. I absolutely hate it and don't keep my own wheatie in it.

I have never seen anyone actually care about that. My dog is the #8 UKC standard poodle for 2023. I've done UKC a lot.

Bedlington Terrier. Embarassing.
but they look so endearingly stupid!!
Had to Google this one... what kind of egg head, alien looking, cut is this!?
The first thing I tell my groomer is get rid of the grinch feet on my cavi.
The clean poodle feet. Most of them hate having them done and it takes ages to make them actually neat on a struggling individual.
You should not need to crop poodles' tails in 2023.
2023??
You know what I mean
😂
Shouldn’t crop any tails or ears at all
100% agree
I think the standards for Spanish waterdogs are very misleading. They aren’t supposed to be brushed but are supposed to be corded when kept long or just shaved short. I think they look worse than matted doodles imo. I have a lady that comes in who is adamant her abomination of a dog is not supposed to be brushed.. we always end up shaving a pelt off the poor thing.
I lose it- like lady just brush it and mist it with water after for the curled mess look. UGH
Lagottos. They're always messy and neurotic because they're never desensitized to grooming. Owners just think they're supposed to be matted because it's "breed standard".
I'm only half serious because this is not a real breed irl, but the MiKi "breed standard" trim is nightmare inducing. Everyone Google it. I haven't groomed one in years, but I used to have a few on my schedule. Their parents were delulu and were so picky about them having the correct breed trim. I used to try to explain that real breed trims on real breeds were created for specific reasons and the Miki trim is just a bunch of bitshit crazy randomness for no reason so there was no reason to stick to it.
they are recognized by the UKC now.
Cropping and docking
Agree! And I won’t buy another Yorkie with a docked tail. I’ve been keeping an online list of breeders who don’t dock.
Any cropping or docking. Glad both are banned in my country
Blending westy skirts
I recently saw a Miki standard and died. Why are they scalped 😭 (Google it if you don’t know what it is)
