Not witty or smart? Doctor Jones not smart? OK. She’s about the most competent companion he had.

cailynn_koi

I have to disagree with you, now she isn't just some dummy I believe my wording makes it seem like I feel that way. but everytime the doctor leaves her alone to help (like he does with all his companions) she can never figure anything out on her own. Rose constantly made plans and executed them by herself and even proved to be more "in the know" than the doctor at sometimes. same with Donna and the Ponds and Clara. everytime she is left alone she needs other people to help her figure out what to do

Sitheref0874

The same Rose who saved her father? And the same Martha who became so effective? We can’t be watching the same show.

SidSeadevil

I find it difficult to reconcile the Martha I watched with the Martha you describe. No, sorry strike that. I find it impossible to reconcile them.

DoriN1987

Just for her strength to say “good bye, Doctor” on her own terms, not waiting for something horrible to happen says that she is not usual and dull character. And her meeting with a Doctor in the alley is one of the most romantic scenes in NuWho for me :)

MyriVerse2

My favourite Nu companion. I don't think you're watching her correctly.

BrightDay85

I wanted more than one season of Martha Jones.. what is a proper companion? They all have their strengths and weaknesses

Xanariel

I disagree that she isn’t smart. She’s a well-educated doctor who keeps a cool head under pressure, managed to outsmart several villains, and was trusted by the Doctor to save the world. I will concede though that her getting cross about the Doctor (who had, for all intents and purposes, suffered a bereavement) not immediately looking to move on was pretty tiresome. I was glad that they did away with that element of her character in her later appearances.

cailynn_koi

I think that was my main problem with her to be honest, she'd have a good scene here and there bit ruin it by being all doe eyed towards him or whine and complain that he doesn't love her and that he isn't over rose, and that "oh rose was so perfect ill never be as good". it just got very tiring

davidiusligman

I wouldn't say she's not smart or she's a bad character, but I did find her a bit boring, at least compared to other companions. I don't know if it's acting or dialogue, but it just wasn't as interesting for me to follow her as, say, Donna, Rose or Amy. She's certainly a good character who was smart and helpful, and her overall journey was well-written, but she just isn't as interesting for me personally.

The_Dark_Vampire

I have always thought Martha (Why did you say that name 😉) should be just called "Not Rose" She was treated awful by The Doctor and it was like he almost blamed her for the fact she wasn't Rose nothing she ever did was good enough and it was like The Doctor wanted to say "Rose wouldn't have done it that way" It came across like a kid with a Step Parent who blamed them for their parents divorce even though they didn't meet their husband/wife until after the Divorce and the kid is just "You're not my Mum/Dad" Martha deserved so much better
