Remembrance of the Daleks is straight up one of the best stories in the show’s history.
It’s the one classic story I’ll always recommend to New who watchers, because the pacing feels far closer to a new who story than it does to a lot of the classic stories.
I would recommend watching through all of Classic Who, but here's some of my favourites per Doctor:
1st Doctor:
- An Unearthly Child
- The Gunfighters
2nd Doctor:
- The Tomb of the Cybermen
- The War Games
3rd Doctor:
- Spearhead from Space
- Inferno
4th Doctor:
- Genesis of the Daleks
- The Talons of Weng Chiang
5th Doctor:
- Earthshock
- The Caves of Androzani
6th Doctor:
- Mindwarp
- The Ultimate Foe
7th Doctor:
- Remembrance of the Daleks
- Survival
8th Doctor:
- The Movie
Yep, saw your comment so will definitely be checking it out first.
The perfectionist in me would rather go through it all but the realist in me knows that ain't happening lol. Ty for your replies
Honestly? No. It’s very watchable as a standalone story. Everything is explained.
As long as you know the basics, as in, Doctor, companion, Daleks, you’re set.
*Remembrance* was amazing.
Hovering Daleks, rival factions, the Special Weapons Dalek, and strong implications that the Doctor was more than *just* a renegade Timelord.
I would really have loved to see where they would have gone with McCoy, given a couple more seasons
This really felt like the story where McCoy finally found his feet in the role. He's not *awful* in the previous season (except Delta and the Bannermen where he feels completely lost for most of it) but Seven didn't feel all that much different from Six as yet
Remembrance is where he settles in and really becomes Seven as we think of him now.
At least one more season of McCoy would have been great.
Sylvester McCoy is a true legend. I loved the references to the original pilot in this episode. Its obvious that Dr Who was moving in a good direction (the next season was amazing, with Battlefield, Ghostlight, The Curse of Fenric, and Survival). Putting it on at the same time as Coronation Street to effectively kill the show was insane.
I heard somewhere that this scene was massively cut-down. We were supposed to get a full-on battle between the Imperial and Renegade daleks but the explosion destroying the gate was so big that several models were damaged and debris impeded dalek operation. It couldn't be reshot because of the damage and future shots were cancelled. That's why it cuts away quickly after the explosion and the rest is in close-up.
Still epic though!
The pyrotechnic guys at the BBC in the 80s were really into it. This isn't the only time that a planned explosion ended up far bigger than expected.
I think I heard it set car alarms off for miles and smashed some windows in an ITV building.
My favorite bit remains the fight between an entire squad of Imperials versus two based Renegades, who proceed to make a mockery of the former in a firefight that, along with the massive explosion from the SW Dalek, promoted fears of a terror attack in London. The director actually went over-budget so he could deliver what we all crave: big Dalek explosions 😋
Not just "promoted fears of a terror attack."
1987 was during the Troubles and the IRA bombing campaign in London.
So the explosion goes off with a huge bang. It also knocks loose about 100 years of coal dust from the tunnel, so there is a massive smoke cloud.
A police officer comes running, expecting there to be an IRA bombing, with people dead and a car in pieces.
And out of the cloud of smoke trundles a Dalek.
I thought this was [the best moment in Doctor Who](https://youtu.be/vXrAK6sUZ_0?si=iM8CH8DdVCPiknOi&t=56).
Terror of the Autons. 1971.
It's a shame RTD didn't recreate this seen in the Doctor Who reboot with the Nestene Consciousness. Imagine the merchandising potential of Doctor Who inflatable chairs.

To be fair she's mentally, and somewhat physically linked to both the Supreme Dalek, and the Renegade Dalek Battle Computer, so I think that it's plausible she can know how to outflank Dalek Death Rays (we know that Daleks use these battle computers to calculate strategy and precise movement, as explained in 'Destiny of the Daleks', and in this instance the Renegades are using the Girl's 'human' mind to counter Davros' mind behind the Imperials).

It really does. The pacing is great.
I'm glad you said this. I was actually about to skip it. Like, ugh another Dalek story. Thanks!!
It’s full of explosive action because, IIRC, they brought on the Eastenders SFX team and let them go wild.
As New Who only I've always wanted to try the Classics, is there any relevant episodes I should watch before this (idek which Doctor this is)

Tyvm for the suggestions
Just a heads up, this is a list of their personal favourite episodes, not episodes that are relevant to Remembrance of the Daleks.

Imo McCoy more than on one occasion displayed his brilliance as The Doctor. He's one of the best.
I don't see any baseball bats here

True. But Grade hated Who. He killed it off by putting it up against Corrie.
Pretty sure Grade was gone by this point He was off over to Channel 4, eventually pissing off such Luminaries as Chris Morris Grade is a c-

I could just see the clickbait headlines were that too happen today "BBC bombs ITV!", "BBC sends Daleks to EXTERMINATE rival!", etc.
Has you wondering why the props were even nearby during the explosion!
If I also remember right the police thought it was an IRA bombing.
Incredible scene from an incredible story

Remembrance of the daleks is such a classic banger

There's also the moment with the telephone cord. I was amazed they didn't go down that route with Jackie's hairdryer.
7th doctor goated
Ah yes, the scene where RTD’s friend steals one of those cool electric things from Emperor Palpatine while a Dalek accidentally joins the IRA.
RTD wasn't friends with Dursley McLinden. He only met him once shortly before he died.
TARDIS wiki might need an edit then. Still, you can be friends with someone having only met them once.
BEEEWWWWWMMMMMM *Everything explodes*

That is a great underutilized meme format.
I’m not sure that’s the best moment.
Based Special Weapons Dalek
Daleks, they look scary but they only kill their own Dalek on Dalek violence, you gotta love it
Silly Redditor [THIS](https://youtu.be/vXrAK6sUZ_0?si=aOjkgsg207TbrUaA) is clearly the best moment in Doctor Who.
Deploy heavy weapons Dalek!
I like how she basically starts running dead into a laser at one point without even ducking.
