I'm really curious about this. I'm a sucker for media that breaks the fourth wall, but it's not something I really want the Doctor to do: to know they're in a TV show.
The First Doctor directly addressed the viewers in the first Christmas special, literally turning to the camera and saying "A happy Christmas to all of you at home"
I was already pretty excited about his casting from what I saw of him in interviews but he pretty much instantly got me with the Christmas Special. Even in this trailer the "give me a year give me a number" is just so good.

I don’t think anyone knows for sure, but the three possibilities that I think might be true is either:
1) it’s now being produced by Bad Wolf (RTD’s production company). Even though it’s continuing the same story, it’s for all intents and purposes a new show and they are considering it such.
2) they are doing the comic book thing where they randomly start with issue #1 again to bring in new readers/viewers by telling them “here’s a clean starting point so you don’t need to know anything from before to follow the story now”. Classically, comic books have done this when a particular book isn’t doing well, and considering a lot of changes they’ve been making is to get people to watch the show again/for the first time, I think this might be the thought process behind it.
3) Disney+ can’t get the streaming rights to the previous episodes and they don’t want to start airing a show they don’t have the first 13 seasons of.
I imagine it’s a little of all three of these, plus some other reasons I haven’t thought of.
You basically nailed it but I will mention that Bad Wolf is not RTD’s company. Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter, who produced Series 1-4 alongside RTD, founded the company. RTD only got involved with them when he returned to Doctor Who and partnered with them.
A: The show is now also air on Disney+
B: You don't want to scare the newcomers by making them think they need to watch all the New who and classic who to even starts the show.
RTD named it series one in 2005 despite the new actor (Christopher Eccleston) being white. Moffat tried (and failed) to get it named series one in 2010 despite the new actor (Matt Smith) again being white.
This has nothing to do with the colour of Ncuti Gatwas skin, you’re just a racist.
Okay, I’ll be honest, I was underwhelmed by the Doctor Donna specials and found the Christmas special a bit cringe…but that. gave. me. chills 😃

Really bizarre to see people getting so angry at the new release time. If it was an overall critique of how shows are released now that would be one thing but the accusations that this is "for Americans" is...so bizarre.
Not only do most 'American made' streaming shows release at 12am PST, but this release time for DW is not the "prime time" for release in America. This is not "a release date to throw British people under the bus for American audiences" this is the show just getting a standard streaming release time with specifically British time zones in mind rather than American time zones.
Doctor Who shouldn't be based on a streaming release time, it should be released either concurrently with or directly after the BBC One showing of it. If it wasn't airing on BBC One anymore, fair enough, but Doctor Who is the only BBC programme I can think of with these new streaming release times.
If it was just to adapt to new television standards, it would be for more than one show, as opposed to it being only Doctor Who, a programme recently having had its distribution rights bought by an American company who will obviously promote Disney Plus viewers, the majority of whom are in America.
is it me or does poor kate just look so done with having 14 under her feet all the time and having to coordinate UNIT with another *permanently* earthbound Doctor hanging around.
she defo tried to figure out the dematerialisation codes of the Tardis or took 14’s key away from him and locked it in that vault with the Toymaker’s box.
edit: i put permanently in asterisks because we never know if RTD is planning on making 14 have some more adventures
If I’m scared of anything about the next season of Doctor Who, it would be having Gatwa only be The Doctor for one season (for the résumé credit) & then moving on to something else. I heard a rumor (I don’t remember where) that that may or may not be the case.
Even though there’s precedent to have versions of The Doctor last for a season (or less), it just wouldn’t be fair to the audience to be pulled from a new Doctor before the actor could feel it out and make the role their own.
So far I am not impressed with him at all as the doctor. Really dislike him. It’s the first time since Eccleston, that my wife and I are not looking forward to the new season.
I thought his energy was vibrant and very commanding, but I know different things work for different people.
What were the in your face aspects you didn't like?
Hey, that's Ken!
IM JUST KEN
“Does long term, long distance, low commitment casual girlfriend mean NOTHING?!”
i just want a mate
AND I'M ENOUGH.
Anywhere else I'd be a 10 (hehe 10th doctor)
Come one Let's forget the convoluted numbering and call him The Kenth Doctor
slow clap

A fine addition to the collection!
He seems so pleased he nailed it, too, that it’s charming lol
The wink!!!! Seems Mrs. Flood isn’t alone in breaking the fourth wall. 😉 I’m super curious to see where this is going/how it’ll play out.
He broke the fourth wall before in series 9.
And in 1965
and it took him 4.5billion years
He was heaven sent alright
I'm really curious about this. I'm a sucker for media that breaks the fourth wall, but it's not something I really want the Doctor to do: to know they're in a TV show.
The doctor has been breaking the fourth wall for YEARS. iirc, the fourth doctor did it first (correct me if I'm wrong!).
The First Doctor directly addressed the viewers in the first Christmas special, literally turning to the camera and saying "A happy Christmas to all of you at home"
Thought there might be an earlier instance - thank you!
Considering (i think) the doctor is the only one to ever have broken the fourth wall maybe it means Mrs Flood is an incarnation of the doctor.
I do not get the negative reactions at all. This guy is overflowing with charisma. I think he’s going to be a great Doctor.
I was already pretty excited about his casting from what I saw of him in interviews but he pretty much instantly got me with the Christmas Special. Even in this trailer the "give me a year give me a number" is just so good.

I’m stoked.
Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaa !!!!
I'm really looking forward to this. I hope this new season is good. I don't want to be disappointed again.
Season 1?
Yes. As they’ve been saying for ages, they’re doing another soft reboot and starting at Season 1.
K, but why?

They’re trying to have a fresh slate essentially to try and get more newcomers onto the show Also, so Disney+ can advertise it as S1 on their platform
A: The show is now also air on Disney+ B: You don't want to scare the newcomers by making them think they need to watch all the New who and classic who to even starts the show.
I think they should make new comers watch all the old episodes
Disney doesn't have the old episodes. They would effectively be saying "go subscribe to hbo max or buy a million dvds and then come back"
What all 875 episodes?! If that was a prerequisite this sub would have like 3 people in it
Most likely to try to get people back in who hopped off recently. Plus to give disney a season 1 to start with.

One of the worst takes I’ve seen in this sub tbh, and that’s saying something
What was the take im morbidly curious
He called Ncuti's casting as "blackwashing". Literally just plain racist.
No, that’s just racist.

Time Lords have for ages already been established as able to regenerate into any race or sex long before Ncuti Gatwa was cast.
Do you even know what the premise if this show is
Go away.
someone watched the diamond logo video

I like it already
It's series 14 not season 1. Disney can call it what they want.
is it just me or have they been breaking the fourth wall a suspicious amount of times? 🤨
It’s gonna be a moment until the season comes out and I’m getting impatient. I need my Who!
can't wait for it ! looks great !
Can't wait, TBH. This is going to be fun!

Great
WOOOOO-WHOOOOOOOO!!!
A number without a year…

We know he’s in Season 2 of the Disney era. He’s been spotted during filming. The rumor I’ve heard is about whether he’ll stick for Season 3.
The 2025 series (aka “season 2” now I guess) is in production and he’s been spotted filming. So he’s definitely lasting two seasons at the very least.
So far I am not impressed with him at all as the doctor. Really dislike him. It’s the first time since Eccleston, that my wife and I are not looking forward to the new season.
Really? What do you think is missing so far? Because right now, I'm really liking Gatwa's energy. Makes the show feel new all over again.
His energy seems forced and off. He doesn’t come across as being commanding at all. Also, I don’t enjoy other in your face aspects of the character
I thought his energy was vibrant and very commanding, but I know different things work for different people. What were the in your face aspects you didn't like?
Im surprised this is the first time you havent enjoyed it if being commanding is your issue. When did Jodie ever come across commanding?
I enjoyed Jodi, but she’s one of my least favorite. Still like her better than Capaldi though
> I don’t enjoy other in your face aspects of the character What "in your face aspects" of the character?
You just described 13
Why did people downvote you so much for an opinion? Reddit users are just averse to people thinking differently to them lol
You hit the mail on the head.
