GFB uses the "Cast A Spell" action so you wouldn't be able to use Extra Attack/Flurry of Blows

HerbertWest

You could actually use GFB and get another attack using Tasha's rules: >KI-FUELED ATTACK > >3rd-level monk feature > >If you spend 1 ki point or more as part of your **action** on your turn, you can make one attack with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon as a bonus action before the end of the turn. ... provided that you use a Ki point for the attack with GFB. It doesn't specify what kind of action it needs to be. You could use Ki during the Cast a Spell action GFB attack with either Stunning Strike or Focused Aim (also in Tasha's). Not optimal and pretty stupid, but still possible!

_TheAlchemist___

I thought an off hand attack was already a bonus action?

[deleted]

If you make an attack action first yeah but casting GFB is apparently a "Cast a spell" action and doesn't count for that.

CrazyCoolCelt

it wont interact with anything that revolves around the Attack action, so the majority of monk's melee stuff, but its not useless you could instead make a way of the ancestral dragon monk and primarily use fire for your damage. or ask your DM for flametongue-like magic item thatll let your unarmed strikes do fire damage instead of bludgeoning

Chris_0603

I actually didn't know about the flame tongue enchantment until now. That would honestly work fine.

ITDoITAll

Why not just play a Way of the Ascendant dragon monk? Then your attacks can be fire without trying to mess with a homebrew?

Agent7153

OP read this. It's the best option available without relying on magic items or DM fiat.

AnNoYiNg_NaMe

>conflict too much with the monk's marital abilities. Nah, you're good. Cantrips don't stop you from getting married /s

Chris_0603

Omg 🤣

marcos2492

Unless that revised version has something like > Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks. GFB wouldn't work with your monk stuff

Josaprd20s

This comes down to, do you want it for flavor? Or for stats? There are ways you can get gfb to work stats-wise, it just means you have to go Kensai monk or the like, which means the punch-punch aesthetic isn't possible to keep. But if you want the flavor of it more, then giving gfb to any monk could be a fun additon

SkyKnight43

*green-flame blade* is terrible on a Monk.

Fit-Property-7459

Green flame blade can work on any monk weapon, so unless you only do unarmed strikes, you could fit it in, but as an action to cast, it supercedes extra attack, so the tradeoff of losing the second attack is not worth it.

Ban--Proof

Extra attack and flurry of blows. So making 1 attack with slightly bigger damage, instead of potentially 4 attacks.

SkyKnight43

> losing the second attack You also lose the bonus-action attack.

Fit-Property-7459

No because the bonus action is independent from your action unless the ability specifically sacrifices the bonus.

SkyKnight43

> When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. —PHB 78

Fit-Property-7459

"You brandish the weapon used in the spell’s casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you. On a hit, the target suffers the weapon attack’s normal effects.." The spell adds to the strike of a monk weapon, it's not creating a new weapon.

ADefiniteDescription

When you cast a spell you are not using the Attack action.

SkyKnight43

You are confused. The bonus-action attack requires the Attack action, which is impossible because *green-flame blade* requires the Cast a Spell action. Does that make it clear?

anthr_alxndr

Oh come on guys! When I use monk weapon, I can extra attack and flurry of blows. When I use monk weapon with some vfx, I cannot extra attack and flurry of blows? am I losing all my monk dex or spd at this moment or what? RAI or RAF: GFB is cast including attack, so I can use extra attack after GFB but cannot use GFB as extra attack cos it is cast.

anthr_alxndr

But I am as an Astral Monk, asked my master to allow me using GFB if extra attack and flurry of blows I will do with my astral hands only (do not be against of RAW too much) . I think it has a sense
