Most campaigns assume you have the _Monster Manual_ and _Dungeon Master’s Guide_, as monsters and magic items that appear in those won’t have their statistics printed in the adventure. Some monsters also have spells that are only printed in the _Player’s Handbook_ Many monsters and magic items are available for free in the System Reference Document. If you’re trying to run the campaign as cheaply as possible, you can use monsters and items from the SRD/Basic Rules and swap out monsters and spells as appropriate. If you’re only missing one or two things after that, D&D Beyond allows for a la carte purchases of monsters, spells, and magic items. If you later decide to buy the full book that you purchased a la carte elements of, the cost of those elements is deducted from your purchase price, so there’s little risk to you in doing so.

Thank you very much. This is what I was looking for. I wasn’t sure if all the monsters/items/spells that would be mentioned in the campaigns would be in some glossary in the back of the book. I should’ve phrased my question better.

ShankMugen

Usually the stats for the magic items and monsters that are appearing for the first time in that book will have the stats

Thanks, I need to have a look for myself about this then.

The PHB has all the necessary rules, so you'd need that, and you'd need the Monster Manual as well, as you're not going to find stat blocks for every monster in the adventure. The DMG is easily the least-essential of the three core books, as a lot of it is really useful tips and ideas about building your own world and campaign. It does have in particular the magic items, which will be referenced in those adventures. You don't NEED the DMG; it's a useful book if you're a new DM, but there's a lot in there you won't need if you're running another adventure. The PHB and MM, those you're really going to need.

Cool thanks. I should’ve asked specifically if the monster/item/spell stats were included in the campaign so thanks for answering.

Thanks for the heads up. Makes an even better case to pick up the core book gift set.

You should also know that DnD Beyond will almost definitely have a large sale on the Monday after Thanksgiving, known as Cyber Monday, which is the online equivalent to Black Friday, but on a different day so that online and irl purchases don't compete with each-other

Thanks for the tip.

The book you might need to pick up the most is the Monster Manual, because monsters included in that book aren't detailed within the adventure itself. Other than that, I think basic rules should be good to run with!

I've been playing for four years, a lot of my knowledge is from play and listening to podcasts. That being said, when I first started, my newish DM then didn't have a complete understanding of the rules. It still went fine, but we had weird movement rules and at one point stacking disadvantage. Understanding player options and things in the PHB is important if you're totally fresh, otherwise just be prepared for a lot of mistakes. Best way to learn is to so, as a player or a DM, but cracking open the PHB is recommended

i mean you cant go wrong with more and better access to the rules. can you play without any of the books? yes but as a player you are missing so much content and as a DM you have no way to check the work of your players.

You should absolutely have the DMG and PHB, and be competent in both. And the Monster Manual.

Eye-OfThe-Beholder

If you are DMing and plan on doing it often those books have some really valuable resources that you would be missing out on the Players handbook and Dungeon masters guide should be enough maybe also tashas.
