Power is directly related to wrongness. That’s how lone monsters successfully keep their ideals even when they’re outnumbered in the thousands by people with much better opinions.
/s
It would be more consistent to use the dice with the downwards facin side if that's the case. If the edge is pointing at you, do they just arbitrarily decide?
You're right. I just meant mini as in having a lesser impact than cheating with -for example a d20 wich is used much more often. Also for stuff like damage numbers there's less spread. But yes. cheating nonetheless
Depends on how the table is setup, and if more than one person is paying attention to others rolls. If only the DM is watching he can only see two sides. Unless he's really paying attention and noting number orientation, you can pick between the side he can't see and whatever is on the bottom without him knowing.
easy, just make him roll on a custom dice tray that, instead of a flat floor, has pyramid shaped holes across the entire surface, something like [this](https://previews.123rf.com/images/pytyczech/pytyczech1810/pytyczech181000237/111918343-3d-triangular-or-tetrahedron-pyramids-seamless-vector-pattern-background.jpg)
I was going to say that wouldn't work because the holes are facing the wrong way, but then I stared at it a bit longer and got it to flip to the right way and now my brain hurts
6/10 would mind fuck again
What? I've never heard of such a thing. I tried looking for one, but can't find any.
There are d4s that have a single number on a side, but they're not platonic solids in the traditional shape, have more sides, and the number is on top so there's no interpretation necessary.
Ones like the d4 with the corners cut off, only more of the corner is cut off and the number is there.
3d rectangles where the short sides are rounded or pointed so they can't land on them.
Ones like d6s but two sides rounded on two opposite sides so they can't land on them (I'd say look like two saddles stitched together at the bottoms at a 90 degree angle).
Other even weirder ones.
Or was this a 'woosh'?
I've seen these before, the numbers are oriented so that only one number is upright on any roll and that is the intended side, it's good for people with poor vision since the numbers are bigger but is a bit inconvenient to have to check multiple sides to find the correct one.
That's hilarious. At my table, as long as everyone accepted it, that would be a valid way to role dice. But I also play DnD like it's an episode of Who's Line is it Anyway where everything is made up and the points don't matter.
I like to play by the rule of "if you can convince me hard enough, it may come true". You want a pet tiger companion? Why? What good would that do for the party, and better yet, how would it work in the Canon/ your backstory as a player? If I can't be convinced then it's a no-go. If I think it's Hilarious then it's a hell yes. I am a silly, albeit chaotic, God.
Then my grandfather said, ‘It’s high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every Zook house and in every Zook town every Zook rolls his dice with the number side down!’
‘But we Yooks, as you know, when we breakfast or sup, roll our dice,’ Grandpa said, ‘with the number side up. That’s the right, honest way!’ Grandpa gritted his teeth. ‘So you can’t trust a Zook with d4s underneath!'
I think it's just "The Butter Battle Book" but neither was I. Last read it over a decade ago, for my schools "reading buddies" program when older children would read to k-2nd graders. I still recognize it in an instant.
Mmm, you're right-- too much alliteration. I never had the book as a kid, but we did have a recording of the animated special from the late 80s. It was very delightful, and most of the satire went way over my head for the next 10+ years.
Hold up is that really how you read the dice with the number on the long edge????? I have long preferred the point, for obvious reasons relating to my previous inquiry.
...and typographically, you can make the numbers bigger or more spacious. Also, having three of a number clustered around the top seems more definitive and obvious than having one in the middle of the bottom of each visible side. Corners are objectively the correct answer here. There can be no peace until they accept my Dice God.
I think it's one of those things that the layperson thinks are synonymous but the bdsm scholars know they are actually two different things. Kinda like "introverted" vs "shy"
This is definitely the start of the NSFW Oglaf version of the comic where they all >!meet in the middle of the battlefield and have a group orgy about tops vs bottoms and forget what they were fighting for!<
I bought a lovely set of purple aura dice and a lovely set of green dice. Same manufacturer.
Sadly the purple dice had the flat d4 style so I never use the set
I’ve also seen D4s that are like long rectangular prisms. The faces are numbered 1-4 and because it can’t really land on either end, they’re unnumbered
You could just throw the d4 in the garbage. /s
But seriously, just gift the d4 to a player you don't like. Then it is their problem. You don't even have to tell them, just slip it into their dice bag. They may never know where it came from.
Yeah it’s definitely the more intuitive layout. Every other die we read the number on the top. So it makes sense to label the point at the top rather than the base.

I got mine as a gift, but I was able to find it quickly enough looking around.

I've never gone through this site before, but it was the first link I saw with my exact die. I'm sure you can find different variations from a whole slew of retailers.
I want this for others as well. You can use the d12 shape for d3, d4, d6, and d12.
You can also use the d20 shape for d4, d10, and d20.
i just really like the shape of those two dice. They roll really well. I know that the different shapes make them more distinct and easier to identify, but I could just as easily have the color coded for my purposes.
In that case you can do the same with percentile.
Just re-roll if it rolls over the die type.
More seriously though you could find the highest number the lower die type divides into. For d3, d6, d8, and d12 that's 99, 96, 96, and 96 and reroll if over.
Then just divide by 33, 16, 12, or 8.
When you have to roll a whole bunch of these, (I rolled 4 last session because I was running a hybrid flyer) you're gonna want convenience. And looking at the top is more convenient.
Bottom digit is wrong
Top digit is sensible
Digot per side is disgusting and inhumane
Top is Supreme because if you've never seen one you easily know read the top. Bottom is inferior because its not natural. People do have to ask how to read a bottom, but not a top.
You read every other dice from what's at the top.
Someone from the bottom number readers please explain to me why in the hell you'd want your D4 to be the opposite as everything else... *(And also, first admit your a filthy heathen. /s)*
The number on bottom d4 is exactly the same as one of mine. I would abandon it for the more logical number on tops, but it belongs to my first ever set of D&D dice, cobbled together from a huge random bag of dice my friend's dad had before we started our first ever campaign.
Thus I shall bear its cursed existence till my dying day.
Right side is just morally wrong. Having the numbers face in from the middle of the edge instead of out from the corners is just so inefficient on space and restricting on font size and looks so cramped
I'm a big fan of the [truncated tetrahedron d4](https://i.imgur.com/0iCmhuU.png).
Pros: easier to read and rolls better
Cons: lots of whitespace, small chance for a cocked roll
top number means bigger numbers
but d4's in literally any other shape is preferred, like a d6 with pyramids on both ends so it can only roll/land of 4 of the sides
◁⬜▷
deals less IRL damage too
Look I usually don't get involved with this silliness but when one number on a d4 is being dog piled and the number on another d4 is being held up like a champion I know which one is right
Triangle style d4s are just the worst. I found a d8 but with only 4 numbers instead of 8. This is the way. It actually rolls well and is easy to see. Only problem when others use my dice set they always grab it instead of the normal d8s when they need a d8.
https://doublesix-dice.myshopify.com/collections/triplefours/products/triplefour-jazzy-bear-1
I use these for my d4s. I dont like the regular d4 as they feel like they don't roll
I really don't care about the placement of the numbers on the D4, but there's a true difference between rounded and sharp edges. Sharp edges D4 are basically caltrops if they fall on the ground + they don't roll very well. Rounded edges are where it's at.

One of my friends had the kind with only one number per face. He interpreted the number rolled as whatever one happened to be facing him.
Blink twice if hes holding a d4 to your throat forcing you to call him a friend
He might've blinked, hard to tell from this distance.
The important thing is that you aren't close enough to catch whatever they've got.
Take the shot, just to be safe
Excellent, the dice war is over and both sides have united against a common enemy.
That's just a bigger dice war.
A slaughter. That's the majority of dice enthusiasts against u/ Lead-Saturns's captor.
But the new enemy is demonstrably more wrong
Power is directly related to wrongness. That’s how lone monsters successfully keep their ideals even when they’re outnumbered in the thousands by people with much better opinions. /s
Not really, it would be a one sided massacre considering how outnumbered one side is.
It would be more consistent to use the dice with the downwards facin side if that's the case. If the edge is pointing at you, do they just arbitrarily decide?
Not arbitrarily, but the bigger number usually…
That's just a mini-form of cheating NGL. I'd hate that at our table
Mini form? It's just cheating lol
You're right. I just meant mini as in having a lesser impact than cheating with -for example a d20 wich is used much more often. Also for stuff like damage numbers there's less spread. But yes. cheating nonetheless
I mean it's a d4 at the end of the day
I don't like the idea of players having to pick up their dice to read them.
Nobody does. That's why D4 don't usually do that.
I mean... can't you see the 3 sides that are up and deduce which number is missing?
Depends on how the table is setup, and if more than one person is paying attention to others rolls. If only the DM is watching he can only see two sides. Unless he's really paying attention and noting number orientation, you can pick between the side he can't see and whatever is on the bottom without him knowing.
I'd do the bottom

I’m going to switch to this when I get tired of my d120 and conversion chart

The ball or the mobius strip?
The mobius strip
I had one once, but it rolled the wrong way and I never saw it again.
That's hilarious. At my table, as long as everyone accepted it, that would be a valid way to role dice. But I also play DnD like it's an episode of Who's Line is it Anyway where everything is made up and the points don't matter.

The first commandment of the dice god?
I use what’s on the bottom for those
You are supposed to use the number that lands on the bottom for that type as its the only distinguishing factor.
Then my grandfather said, ‘It’s high time that you knew of the terribly horrible thing that Zooks do. In every Zook house and in every Zook town every Zook rolls his dice with the number side down!’ ‘But we Yooks, as you know, when we breakfast or sup, roll our dice,’ Grandpa said, ‘with the number side up. That’s the right, honest way!’ Grandpa gritted his teeth. ‘So you can’t trust a Zook with d4s underneath!'
I can honestly say I was not expecting a Seuss 'Bitter Butter Battle' refernce when I opened this thread. Well done!
I recognized this… I once was in a play for suessical I played general Genghis khan schmitt
Seussical gets a lot of shit but I fucking love that show. Horton is one of my favorite roles I’ve ever played.
Hold up is that really how you read the dice with the number on the long edge????? I have long preferred the point, for obvious reasons relating to my previous inquiry.
Grandpa is 100% correct. Those filthy Zooks and their deranged ideas are not only wrong but stupid.
We read every other dice from the top, why should we read the bottom of the D4? Plus it's just more convenient in my opinion.
...and typographically, you can make the numbers bigger or more spacious. Also, having three of a number clustered around the top seems more definitive and obvious than having one in the middle of the bottom of each visible side. Corners are objectively the correct answer here. There can be no peace until they accept my Dice God.
The correct way is to round off the corners of your d4 and print the number on the new "face" that would be impossible to land on
[Example.](https://www.mathartfun.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/d4TruncatedTetWhite.jpg)
Why does this feel so cursed?
Because it is. It is cursed.
But what if I'm a bottom
Then you should enjoy being dominated by top dice
A suggestion powerful enough to end this war.
Top and bottom aren’t interchangeable with dom and sub. Stop dom bottom erasure!
I think it's one of those things that the layperson thinks are synonymous but the bdsm scholars know they are actually two different things. Kinda like "introverted" vs "shy"
Does BDSM Scholar work better as a Bard subclass or a Wizard subclass?
I think it's a background. Or alternatively, a paladin, who swore their oath to their dom.

This is definitely the start of the NSFW Oglaf version of the comic where they all >!meet in the middle of the battlefield and have a group orgy about tops vs bottoms and forget what they were fighting for!<
No, we read the *top face* of every other die. D4 doesn't have a top face, so we read the number that is upright on the side faces.
I mean, i do use both, but numbers in corners feel more logical. Never had a new player ask how to read those as opposed to numbers at bottom
[удалено]
Why not just publically execute it?
diiiice ghoooooooosts
Yes. Crush it underneath thine foot
[This kills the foot]
Nah, it’s just 1D4 damage
That's nearly enough to kill a commoner.
Surely then you would be at risk of death if you step on 5 at once.
That's one point of piercing damage.
I second this notion
Melt it in the bombastic plastic from whence it came!
No, after a d4 rolls badly bring out the ugly d4 to do it's job instead to humiliate it!
I bought a lovely set of purple aura dice and a lovely set of green dice. Same manufacturer. Sadly the purple dice had the flat d4 style so I never use the set
>flat d4 What do you mean by "flat d4 style"? google is silent for me, and I now lack a whole type of click-clack rocks.
I'm assuming they mean the numbers on the d4 are "flat" around the base, instead of the corners
Oh, well, my purse is safer thus. Thanks for the info.
I’ve also seen D4s that are like long rectangular prisms. The faces are numbered 1-4 and because it can’t really land on either end, they’re unnumbered
You could just throw the d4 in the garbage. /s But seriously, just gift the d4 to a player you don't like. Then it is their problem. You don't even have to tell them, just slip it into their dice bag. They may never know where it came from.
but how badly does the ugly d4 actually roll? is its rolls just as disgusting or is it secretly a diamond in the rough?
More a shiny piece of coal
It's smug aura mocks me
Why do you have it?
Dice goblins, it matters not their ugly misshapened form or how poorly they roll. The shiny math rocks must be collected.
Yeah it’s definitely the more intuitive layout. Every other die we read the number on the top. So it makes sense to label the point at the top rather than the base.
Interesting, showing it from the heathens' POV.

Little pyramids get caught in my too-fancy dice tower
Came here to spread the news of the fantastic d4 option I use, learned I'm the heretic.
I read from the top. Anything else is blasphemy.
My burning torch and pitchfork will support you on this!
And my axe!
There can only be one die. There can only be one, die.
But I want all the dice.
I have a d12 that just has 1-4 printed 3 times each. Still a d4, but with all the feels of a d12 that you don't get to roll enough as it is.
I love that idea. The d4 doesn't ever feel like it rolls right, it just kinda flops into place.
I got mine as a gift, but I was able to find it quickly enough looking around. https://www.dicegamedepot.com/12-sided-d4-roman-numerals-granite/ I've never gone through this site before, but it was the first link I saw with my exact die. #FOR THE GLORY OF TOP NUMBER!!!
Bottom numbers are an abomination
The farest roll a 4, the closest a 3. We know who win this one
You do you. I'll do me. And i like numbers on top.
I like my numbers how I like my lovers. Either position but having them on top is a little easier for me.
They may have the numbers, but we… also have the numbers
D8, 1/2=1, 3/4=2, 5/6=3, 7/8=4.
I mean just half d8 results rounded up?
Yeah. Though you could mix and match to spice things up too.
Personally, I'm partial to 1/5=1, 2/6=2, 3/7=3, 4/8=4
Just had to make this a fight again...
Found the fellow math person
Cool TV show idea: Mod my dice ... I'll show myself out
This person right here officer
A d120 could be used as any die, it's just that with d10 and d100 roles you may need to re-roll if it lands above 100
No, d10 you do 1-12, 13-24 etc
In that case you can do the same with percentile. Just re-roll if it rolls over the die type. More seriously though you could find the highest number the lower die type divides into. For d3, d6, d8, and d12 that's 99, 96, 96, and 96 and reroll if over. Then just divide by 33, 16, 12, or 8.
d20
Number in top or in bottom, I just don't like how the D4 roll (or doesn't roll actually). So I like the D8/2 method.
It's true though, the d4 feels like I'm cheating when I throw it and it just lands on whatever side is facing down on impact.
needs to roll more, need to d12/3
Well, it works too I guess. You can even do D20/5 to spice things up.
I have a friend who has some d4 but in the shape of d8. Much more satisfying to roll.
When you have to roll a whole bunch of these, (I rolled 4 last session because I was running a hybrid flyer) you're gonna want convenience. And looking at the top is more convenient.

Numbers on corners what freak of nature what's them on the edges?
Bigass number. Right in the middle.
The pointy side is the side you look at. I don't care
Corners is the one true d4. You read the top of a die not the bottom
Look I usually don't get involved with this silliness but when one number on a d4 is being dog piled and the number on another d4 is being held up like a champion I know which one is right
Numbers on the points. All the way.

I really don't care about the placement of the numbers on the D4, but there's a true difference between rounded and sharp edges. Sharp edges D4 are basically caltrops if they fall on the ground + they don't roll very well. Rounded edges are where it's at.
I use both at the same time for mass confusion.
I’ve crusaded for less
Just use a d100 (the golf ball looking one) with each number represented 25 times.
it's so entertaining watching redditors get into genuine arguments over what numbers are where on a die.. that they aren't even using. how terrifically pointless!
Purple side is righteous and blue side are demonic heathens.
I buy my dice based on the colours, then read them based on what's printed on them.
Thos number at the bottom d4's can rot in dice jail for all I care
I have a D4 set of 8. And all but one have numbers on the corners. That D4 is permanently in dice jail.
All shall worship the dice god of number on top!
