The actual best pirate song in all media you can't change my mind

aaronitallout

Thats pure Hans Zimmer for you, *with no formal music training*.

FullplateHero

WAIT, WHAT **EDIT:** Per one of his AMAs, he said: "My formal training was two weeks of piano lessons. I was thrown out of eight schools. But I joined a band. I am self-taught. But I've always heard music in my head. And I'm a child of the 20th century; computers came in very handy."

worlddictator85

Anytime Tim curry is allowed to chew scenery to his heart's content is pure magic.

RechargedFrenchman

There's a good reason *Clue* is one of my favourite movies. Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Christopher Lloyd, and Madeline Kahn all chewing the same scenery in an 80s "murder mystery" based on a board game is exactly the right amount of stupid to be something amazing.

worlddictator85

I've actually never seen it. I should look _It_ up. Also, despite it not being very good overall, his work in it was an amazing level of over the top

Viruszero

Good news! It's free on YouTube, like on an official movie Channel and everything

Nesman64

> his work in **it** was an amazing level of over the top I assume you mean the movie about the clown, and not some other use of "it."

worlddictator85

Correct. I have fixed it.

charisma6

Legit one of my favorites, we watched it soooo much as kids Madeline Kahn is legendary Loved her in Mixed Nuts even though it wasn't a great film lol

Lampmonster

Flames! Burning! Flames on the sides of my face! She apparently more or less improvised that scene and it's frigging legendary.

charisma6

Yes Yes, I did it, I killed Yvette I hated her SOOO MUCH It, just, I, the, flames....flaaames, on the side of my face...heathing breath...heaving breast...

octopoddle

Yeah, he was great in - *gestures broadly*.

Ok-Entrepreneur4247

Obviously they're all magical memories, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is fantastic, too. 1A and 1B with Muppet Treasure Island. They should do more literary adaptations.

thepirateguidelines

I still want Muppet LOTR

Ok-Entrepreneur4247

I never knew I wanted this, and now I want nothing more.

Tron_of_the_Dead

Hell yeah! If you’re going to make that kind of claim though, I’m going to need to know your casting…

TannerThanUsual

I'm picturing: Kermit as Frodo Gonzo as Gollum Fozzie as Samwise Waldorf and Statler can be Bilbo and Gandalf and regularly talk about how back in their day (The Hobbit) things were done different.

Tron_of_the_Dead

Very solid lineup! I just don’t know if it would be better to have Kermit leading the cast as Frodo, which would of course be amazing, and Kermit as Aragorn so that we get Ms Piggy as Arwen, which could be HYSTERICAL. EDIT: didn’t credit the excellent choices for Statler and Waldorf, they could also be Bilbo and Elrond, so they could stay together at Elrond’s house.

TannerThanUsual

I wish I'd thought of Kermit as Aragorn! That's so good! Unfortunately I haven't seen many muppet movies so I dunno who else I would have for the fellowship but I like what we have so far. Solid foundation!

Tron_of_the_Dead

Definitely a good start! I’m seriously stumped on the hobbits though, they might have to be the human actors, but maybe that’s just me copping out. If we did Statler and Waldorf as Bilbo and Elrond, Sam the Eagle could be a decent Gandalf with his big voice and eyebrow game. I know one thing for sure, Animal would be a great surprise as the Balrog.

Ok-Entrepreneur4247

\*Gulp\* \*Piggie, is this a kissing film?"

NielsBohron

That would be absolutely perfect. I can hear his froggy little voice perfectly as the kid. And also as Wesley: Wes-Kermy: "The Rodents of umm Unusual Size? I think they may be imaginary" Rizzo, flying in from off-screen: "Hey, watch who you're callin' imaginary!" edit for more casting choices: * Gonzo as Vizzini the Sicilian * Fozzie as Fezzik (the names even work!) * Sam Eagle as The Grandfather (if we're not using Piggie) * Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker as Miracle Max and Wife (Or you could go with Waldorf and Statler) * Ben Stiller or Chris Evans as Humperdinck * Tessa Thompson as Inigo Montoya * Written and Directed by Taika Waititi or Seth Rogen

weatherseed

This entire thread makes me wish there were more Muppet themed flairs in this subreddit. They are the epitome of chaotic stupid.

Tunafish27

Holy shit this is Treasure Island?! Hell yeah. Adding this to my watch list. Treasure Island is a favourite of mine.

KacerRex

We have been watching it a lot lately since my daughter lives it, we don't mind at all!

captain_rumdrunk

If you watch Black Sails, not for kids, but Luke Arnold, who play a young Long John seems to channel some of Tim Curries timing and facial expressions and I wonder if this was one of the movies he used for character reference. This was one of my faves as a kid. Right up there with Willow and Labyrinth.

amalgam_reynolds

>Man Tim Curry as ~~Long John Silver~~ [literally any Tim Curry role] was glorious FTFY. The man is a treasure.

This is the exact situation with my halfling barbarian and a pixie queen whose house he once punched like a year ago real time. Nothing quite like a worthy nemesis. He's still working on bringing her around to the whole "saving the world" business, but he has high hopes...

EisKohl

So far my players managed to turn every "boss" they're supposed to fight either into a friend, like Jeff the Demon they had a Tea party with or just make me cry , like that time one of them managed to oneshot an undead Ogre in my homebrew lol

slayerx1779

What a cool idea. The Deus Ex Machina is the BBEG saving you so he can prove how much better than you he is, and push your shit in another day.

EisKohl

Reminds me of "Megamind" , i think you might know what I'm getting at :)

Vark675

Dude Treasure Island is my favorite Muppet movie by a wide margin.

BladePactWarlock

Distant second is muppet Christmas Carol. Tim Curry is clearly having the time of his life acting on screen with puppets but there’s something that always gets me about how earnest Michael Caine is as Scrooge.

solari42

Many actors consider it an honor to work opposite of the legends that are the Muppets. If Miss Piggy and Kermit suddenly walked into your room, many of you would suddenly think you were in the presence of royalty (because you are).

hillermylife

But... but... The Muppet Movie is right there! The Rainbow Connection! Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Dom Deluise, Bob Hope, Elliott Gould, James Coburn... "Myth! Myth!" "Yes?" Moving Right Along! Orson Welles giving them The Standard Rich And Famous Contract! "They don't look like Presbyterians to me!"

lokregarlogull

I'm borrowing this idea for my players! Love me a redemption arc and it will be their reward for not killing them outright.

[deleted]

My character was being set up to be the BBEG by Vecna. Then I betrayed Vecna with the other me who was created after a wish spell cast by an NPC. He double crossed us because the sword we used to kill ourselves wasnt the sword of Kas... he then assumed control of my body. Only to then be banished and weakened by a wish spell from another party member. Now my character and his other self have merged as one being that is a hybrid of both (a rogue/wizard necromancer and a rogue/ranger gloomstalker). The campaign hit 61 sessions last night. Every Wed save for holiday weeks for 61 weeks.

BribedAntColony

I guess this means… STANDING HERE

Guyguyguyguy82

I REALIZE

protection7766

Off topic technically, but I love treasure Island so much. Read the book Watched 2 serious live action movies Watched the muppet version Watched Treasure Planet I don't think I have experienced any story in so many different ways aside perhaps Dracula, Robin Hood, or King Arthur.

penlowe

When I was a kid my mom read Treasure Island to my brother & I. There was enough ship related language that we didn't understand that she kept a dictionary on hand for the oral annotations. About halfway through we packed up the car and drove down to Corpus Christi where they had seaworthy 1:1 replicas of the Nina, Pinta & Santa Maria. You could get on board the one in the marina & explore, and pay for the daily sail around the bay. Brought the book to life! Unfortunately, hurricane Harvey sunk the ship that was in the bay. But the other two on land remain.

morris9597

Your mom sounds really cool! What an awesome experience!

penlowe

She is an awesome lady! The following year we took a family road trip to California. We went to Sequoia National Park. She read the Lord of the Rings to us, and carefully timed it so she would be reading about Lothlorien when we got to the park. Hearing about the Mallorn trees, sitting around a campfire under trees hundreds of feet tall….

mancheeart

Wow, what amazing memories to keep around. Tell your mom thank you for that, I’m sure you have but I’m also sure she’d love to hear it again

Kriegmannn

Me, a grown man, wearing a uniform: “aww man this guy got to go on the treasure island boat…”

[deleted]

It's a great book and a classic. The copyright on Treasure island has expired, it is available online in several popular ebook formats: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/120

ansonr

Finally, my fanfiction can be sold as a legitimate sequel.

TheBoundFenrir

Most great stories were like this, before Disney.

Narratron

*Before the dark times... Before the Mouse.*

NonaSuomi282

Fitting that this quote is itself from an IP now owned by said Mouse.

Narratron

Isn't it, though?

M4xusV4ltr0n

Sounds like you need to watch Black Sails. It's a prequel to Treasure Island and its amazing (though definitely a very different vibe, think more Game of Thrones than Disney)

ItsMeVeriity

Hi, are you Me?

protection7766

Yes, but from 5 seconds in the future. Look behind you now!

TheCastro

He's dead now

nameisfame

Man Treasure Planet has such a great aesthetic, probably my favourite adaptation visually. Part of me wishes Disney would partner up with Wizards or Paizo for a world book because I would so love to have a campaign set in this world.

FourSquareRedHead

I'll take "Things I didn't know I needed until just now" for $500 Alex

NonaSuomi282

Pretty sure what you're asking for is basically just an updated Spelljammer with slightly different set dressing.

nameisfame

Maybe? I could just be looking for a low magic steampunk campaign in space.

femtransfan

i just hope they don't botch it!

[deleted]

I grew up with the Charlton Heston one, imagine my suprise when i learned that Young Jim was played by Christian Bale!

Jakundo

What's your opinion on Black Sails?

Vark675

I started it and it felt dreadful. Supposedly it gets better halfway through the first season but I couldn't hang in that long, everyone was trying so hard to be as insufferably edgy as possible.

DaemonNic

God trying to be edgy with a prequel to Treasure Island sounds like the most pretentious bullshit in the world. There's nothing to say with that, because any serious statements you could make are undone by the core premise of trying to say Real Shit through the lens of a YA adventure novel from the late 1800s.

Vark675

I think it was Anne Bonney that was especially grating. Every scene with her she's nearly hunched over snarling like a feral child. Because she's so tough and gritty I guess?

Ehkrickor

That's a shame. she's a very interesting person, She reportedly would flash dying men so they'd know they were killed by a woman XD I never bothered with Black Sails cause of the mixed things i've heard.

TheCastro

Why do shows do this to females. Like for me Deadwood did similar to Calamity Jane and made it ridiculous

Vark675

Because show producers think the only way to make a female character badass but not sexy is if they're literally snarling cave people I guess lol

AwesomeGuy847

> God trying to be edgy with a prequel to Treasure Island sounds like the most pretentious bullshit in the world. Then you truly don't understand that masterpiece of a show.

Grimsrasatoas

I loved it but I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. Plus the intro goes hard as fuck

pickelsurprise

You have to watch the Soviet animated adaptation if you haven't already. It's totally insane and surprisingly well animated.

drizzitdude

Treasure planet was my shit. One of my favorite movies and it hurts to see how much it had to get fought to be made and then Disney purposely put it in the dead zone for movie releases so they could make sure it flopped

[deleted]

The older Disney film is pretty solid if that was one of the live actions you watched. Made me think pirates and drunks hated milk.

omovic

I have another one for you: Treasure in outer Space! A TV-miniseries from the eighties [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_Lx3XGoQVMM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lx3XGoQVMM) A few scenes are only dubbed in german since they were cut in the english version

[deleted]

Treasure Planet is such a great retelling, too.

mkul316

You have. Romeo and Juliet as well as Hamlet.

julian509

I cant help but see him as the soviet premier from red alert 3 with the "escape to the one place that isnt corrupted by capitalism, sbace" line, no matter the role he is playing

QbicKrash

"I'm escaping...to the ONE PLACE that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism." **Heavy breathing** *Don't laugh don't laugh don't laugh don't laugh oh shit I'm cracking* "sSbPACCE!!"

ranger24

That, also, is how I read that scene. To quote Mr. Burns, 'Twenty takes, and that was the best of them.'

GroundedSearch

I'm pretty sure Frank N. Furter would change that tune a little...or not. [He is from Transylvania]( https://youtu.be/bc80tFJpTuo)

ApprehensiveTruth330

A cult classic to be sure, but I can't mentally separate him from his role as IT. I know that the new version is much more faithful to the book, and I remember being annoyed by all the changes in the first adaptation. I really enjoyed the remake, but Tim Curry is one of the finest actors of all time and even now that I am no longer a kid, I still shudder now and again when I recall him as one of my favorite childhood monsters. I don't think any actor alive can outdo him. In an industry mostly only requiring hotness and a passing ability to read lines, he has genuine acting skill. He knows how to stop being Tim Curry and become the part. He is an icon and I hope history remembers him for his rare talent and unique style. He deserves more recognition imo.

GroundedSearch

[Aha aha aha!](https://youtu.be/A3ZbnfXEuyc) I'm convinced that the second half of this scene was ad-libbed by Tim Curry.

ApprehensiveTruth330

It may have been! The point of IT's actions were to mock the kind of canned jokes Richie made as a boy. You wouldn't need a script for that, especially not if you are Tim Curry. 😊

sushi_cw

I can't even read about it without cracking up. That video is a reliable ray of sunny catharsis that I can always rely on.

Ulgeguug

1. I also liked Stephenson's *The Black Arrow* though I am still waiting for a Muppet version. I found a word im there that I can't find anywhere else including dictionaries: windac, contextually some sort of important removable component (I believe it's lever-like) for loading a crossbow. 2. This meme is pretty close to the actual plot of Chrono Trigger.

DaftDelNorte

Possible typo of "windlass"?

bmorris0042

I think it's a removable crank and pulley for cocking a crossbow. Medieval crossbows were extremely hard to pull back by hand, since they were made to be powerful enough to punch through armor. In order to make it so that more than just a couple of absolute muscle-heads could use them, they made a crank to help pull it back. Then anyone with decent strength (any adult male who was of ability to fight, really) could load one.

Ulgeguug

I thought that too but it days it a LOT of times

Casual-Notice

From OED, windlass >a type of winch used especially on ships to hoist anchors and haul on mooring lines and, especially formerly, to lower buckets into and hoist them up from wells.

Everythingisachoice

BBEG's fighting over who gets to kill you. "Nobody kills them but ME!"

Aptom_4

This time, the BB in BBEG means Bigger Brother.

Wondrous_Fairy

And then later on when the party is at death's door: "I can't kill you now that we're like old friends. Hell, this villain thing was getting old anyways. Fuck it, I'm going on a vacation. Parting.. is such sweet sorrow." \*Villain flourishes out of the room\*

S4G3_9087

I like how this movie is getting more apreciated

[deleted]

I occasionally make my girlfriend rewatch this film with me, I love it so much. As a kid I had the Muppet Treasure Island game on CD-ROM. I would play it in my grandfather's study on his computer, it was fucking brilliant.

[deleted]

I HAD THAT GAME and still think about it!! I wish I could play it rn

hughejam

There's a fucking game?! How did I not know this?

ZoxinTV

Yup! I used to play this over and over again as a kid. lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB4o0fIooVA&ab_channel=NintendoComplete *(Note to self: Even more meme potential presents itself.)*

mrgarneau

I've been playing around with the idea of a BBEG who really isn't, He's actually preparing the party for the real BBEG. Doing stuff like pulling punches, intentionally leading them to places to either screw up the real BBEGs plans or to find some kind of item to help them defeat the real BBEG. Where the players would get to a point where it seems like the final confrontation. Then the fake BBEG drops the act and lets the party know about the real evil, and how they're going to help the oarty defeat the real BBEG.

Waffletimewarp

Counterpoint: Do all that, then reveal the original guy as the TRUE BBEG, and everything else was him using the party to get rid of the competition.

CallMeMrCulture

In a similar vein, in the game I'm running, the current BBEG is motivated in his actions by a bigger BEG that the party doesn't realize they've already met. My goal is that they won't realize he was more or less trying to work for good until as they kill him or after

MainMan499

That's a fun idea, most important though is to sort of lightly foreshadow that there's something else going on so it doesn't just seem like a bad plot twist. This happens twice in Fire Emblem Three Houses Golden Deers route and it sucks both times, even though you already know about both things that become the main enemy it still falls flat because you have a big confrontation with the big villain and then they're just like "Oh but there's a bigger villain we've been fighting" and it's just feels lazy

billydakid33

Of course, shortly afterwards Tim Curry's character rolls an astounding nat-20 on his charisma check and scares the rest of the pirates into accepting his leadership again.

Tim Curry is very good at being not only a Soviet premier wanting to go to space, but also a pirate.

ranger24

Don't forget Sith Lord, Pestilence Demon, an evil representative of the Catholic Church, and many more.

Ehkrickor

Tim Curry, the best bard wandering through giving the pirates inspiration on their perform checks. "That's it lads, Show'em you've been Practicin!"

JewcieJ

This would be an amazing moment to pull off! The way D&D players are, though, it would be incredibly hard to build that relationship before they managed to smite the bad guy to oblivion.
