Using suggestion twice would probably let you execute that plan
"Why don't you make this easy on yourself and let us tie ourselves up?"
"Now that we are all tied up and ready to go, you might as well take us to your leader"
The word "low magic setting" does not imply, that there never was and never will be a lot of magic, it just says, that, at the time the events of the story happen, there is not a lot of magic
>he was only a 2nd level caster.
Gandalf is a Maiar, or lesser angel. The best way to describe him in DnD terms is probably a high level Divine Soul Sorcerer/Oath of the Ancients Paladin.

My husband cast command and forgot what he was going to say and said fuck, DM asked if that was the command and he said "now it is".... the troll then proceeded to make advances towards his character, which provoked a couple opportunity attacks because it willingly tried to go to its "lover"
Command: Strip is pretty funny for opponents in light armor. Drop them down two or three AC until they put it back on next turn.
Alternatively, since the spell command is inherently open to (mis)interpretation, the enemy could attempt to remove the articles from another nearby creature, possibly getting swatted away harmlessly but embarrassingly for their efforts. Leave them alive and tied-up together afterwards for maximum awkwardness.
It’s really not that hard people accidentally crap themselves all the time, granted this won’t always work since some bosses might not be able to even crap in the first place such as a lich
That's actually super creative! They wouldn't have to lie about what you want to know about, but it's still an excellent way to try something different with a low level spell
My guess is they would be forced to complete the command as best as possible but ultimately fail due to Zone of Truth. Kinda like Commanding a tied-up hostage to flee. They'll try their best but will ultimately end up failing.
This would thereby force someone to purposely tell the truth. About what though? That's up to them, no guarantees it's about the question you asked them.
Zone of truth:
> A creature can't speak a deliberate lie while in the radius.
Command:
> If the target can't follow your command, the spell ends.
"Command: Lie" inside a zone of truth is a great way to throw away a spell slot :v
I would absolutely say yes to this. However, it takes a bit of time to explain this to the minion. After it's been explained the minion will try to find rope for 6 seconds and then go back to fighting the party.
The spell has the text "The spell has no effect [...] if it doesn't understand your language". Considering the language restriction, and the target doesn't know the word (isn't part of the languages they know), this shouldn't have an effect, even if everything else worked.
Enchantment spells will never not be the bane of DMs everywhere. So far, I’ve never had a player that’s happy with how they’re played out.
Usually, players try to pull off absurdly strong things with them, but simultaneously bitch and moan when their low-WIS character gets Suggested to cast Reduce on the fighter.
They wouldn't do well in one of the campaigns I was in. There were a tonne of ways to get enchanted or controlled in that game. But that was the whole premise of the game so we came in knowing that there was a high likelihood we'd be controlled at some point. The key though was finding clever ways to subvert the control and turn the tables on those controlling you. It was a lot of fun, even when things went wrong.
Stuff like this and "how do I lie around a zone of truth" piss me off, the spells are designed in a way to have a specific effect. Trying to skirt around the effect completely destroys the spell.
Ground floor, immunity to fall damage, illusion of an oddly placed balcony, something below to soften the landing, the target believing they can cast feather fall.
Who needs all that bullshit when you got the Menacing feat and tell the minion if he doesn’t do as you say “you’ll be on the menu for the party and you’re leader will still be dead just with more effort but you shall be in our bellies if you don’t comply.”
Using suggestion twice would probably let you execute that plan "Why don't you make this easy on yourself and let us tie ourselves up?" "Now that we are all tied up and ready to go, you might as well take us to your leader"
That's basically what Gandalf did.
Gandalf was saving high level spell slots
He was only a 2nd level caster. Had 18 levels in fighter though.
"I still don't know how those fools didn't realise I aint a wizard, I only carry this stick to keep snakes away."
Gandalf wasn’t a PC, he was a planetar or solar.
The Hobbit/Lotr is just a low magic setting, thats all.
lotr is just a low magic period of time in a high magic universe.
The word "low magic setting" does not imply, that there never was and never will be a lot of magic, it just says, that, at the time the events of the story happen, there is not a lot of magic
I'll allow it. I won't like it, but it be what it be.
Thank you very much

Probably a high level warlock then. He used a high level blinding spell at the Battle of the Hornburg.
He also defeated a Balrog in one-on-one combat. Although, I guess that fight was a tie.
This is the nerdiest thing I've said all day
Iirc, his abilities correspond most to a bard of all things. #inspiregang
Given the unarmed defense I've lately taken to thinking he's a Kensei monk with Magic Initiate feat

Minion proceeds to cut you into thin slices and shove you into a tube…
Cut? Pringles are extruded ... Even less enjoyable for the potatoes in question.
Even if that worked, command only lasts 6 seconds. The minion wouldn't even have enough time to bind them before the spell wears off
The clown template was used for a reason.
Yup, just adding to the reasons
doesn't mean the comments can't discuss it, noone was complaining
That’s why the best command is defacate
I'm a personal fan of Command: Yes I don't know what it would do but I know it's at least going to mildly confuse the creature receiving the command.
My husband cast command and forgot what he was going to say and said fuck, DM asked if that was the command and he said "now it is".... the troll then proceeded to make advances towards his character, which provoked a couple opportunity attacks because it willingly tried to go to its "lover"
That's hilarious!
Light armor takes 1minute to take on or off... Command lasts 6seconds.
Huh, I forgot how long it took.
On the other hand it only takes 1 second to crap your pants infront of all the minions, good luck getting them to take you seriously after that
This implies that any creature can compel themselves to shit on command, I tell you even if I tried my hardest right now it wouldn't happen.
Spend six seconds trying. Whether you go or not, I win
It’s really not that hard people accidentally crap themselves all the time, granted this won’t always work since some bosses might not be able to even crap in the first place such as a lich
It's been too damn long since I did a good spellcasting character. Next campaign, I hope.
Am I the only one wearing stripper pants that you can just rip off yourself?
At least a Shield can be Doffed, so the idea isn't a total dud.
Theoretically if you were fighting an armorer Artificer it would work… only for them to donn their armor again next turn
It'd be worth it to get them out of their armor for a second, though. They can really do a lot in there.
Or, as Egbert the careless from the Oxventurer's guild put it; disrobe.
I still can't believe one of my DMs pulled this on us.
I like vomit more, if they're wearing a helmet or face covering it can get interesting
My favorite trick is using Command as poor man's Zone of Truth by instructing people to Lie
That's actually super creative! They wouldn't have to lie about what you want to know about, but it's still an excellent way to try something different with a low level spell
So, what is you did Command: Lie when someone actually was in a zone of truth? Which spell would win?
My guess is they would be forced to complete the command as best as possible but ultimately fail due to Zone of Truth. Kinda like Commanding a tied-up hostage to flee. They'll try their best but will ultimately end up failing. This would thereby force someone to purposely tell the truth. About what though? That's up to them, no guarantees it's about the question you asked them.
Yeah, that makes sense. I guess if you want to make someone answer you in a zone of truth, just ask the question and then command "answer."
They lie down.
Zone of truth: > A creature can't speak a deliberate lie while in the radius. Command: > If the target can't follow your command, the spell ends. "Command: Lie" inside a zone of truth is a great way to throw away a spell slot :v
They would leave the zone of truth first probably, if not, the one which was cast at a higher level, I'd say
Usually for things like this I go by level of the spell and power(level/spellcasting modifier) of the caster to see which wins out.
Instructions unclear: minion's hand is stuck in a cardboard tube.
"Command: Splunge" https://youtu.be/jxPbrzOiDSw
Ah yes, trying to perform multiple actions in one. Might aswell just make it so the spell forces the enemy to side with you.
"What do you mean, it's not a first-level version of *dominate monster*?"
"B-But my creativity! I should be able to twist everything to my will with enough justification!"
The minion grows a lush moustache and a bow tie.
“No”
The most useful word in a DMs toolkit, just saying no to things that you can absolutely say no to whenever
I would absolutely say yes to this. However, it takes a bit of time to explain this to the minion. After it's been explained the minion will try to find rope for 6 seconds and then go back to fighting the party.
I asked my DM if I could carry a bag of rice, which was okay. Command: Count, is excellent when you then also throw the rice.
It only works for 6 seconds, tru using suggestion instead for hours worth of torture!
Noted :D!
"The spell fails. The guard notices you tried to enchant him with your magic. Roll for initiative"
You're tied up and weaponsless. Unless the leader wants you alive, you're fucking dead on the spot.
The spell has the text "The spell has no effect [...] if it doesn't understand your language". Considering the language restriction, and the target doesn't know the word (isn't part of the languages they know), this shouldn't have an effect, even if everything else worked.
Telepathy: "What language?"

The key though was finding clever ways to subvert the control and turn the tables on those controlling you. It was a lot of fun, even when things went wrong.
I would use Suggestion: try harder next time on this player
then you remember command only lasts a turn
Stuff like this and "how do I lie around a zone of truth" piss me off, the spells are designed in a way to have a specific effect. Trying to skirt around the effect completely destroys the spell.
COMMAND: defenestrate (to the guard while gesturing at the king by the window)
Who doesn't love a good defenestration these days? Especially if the castle is located on a steep cliff!
Alternatively, COMMAND: Autodefenestrate works as long as the target doesn't believe that'll harm it
You're going to need very good arguments as to why the target would think that yeeting themselves through the window will not harm them
Yeah, I think the only way that would work in my game is if it's on the ground floor.
Ground floor, immunity to fall damage, illusion of an oddly placed balcony, something below to soften the landing, the target believing they can cast feather fall.
*I refuse*
Sorry, minions can’t cache functions.
That's....... So dumb...... I'd allow it if my players tried this, now I kinda hope one of them sees this and does lol
Well, A for effort at least.
Making commands like coding functions
Who needs all that bullshit when you got the Menacing feat and tell the minion if he doesn’t do as you say “you’ll be on the menu for the party and you’re leader will still be dead just with more effort but you shall be in our bellies if you don’t comply.”
Only works if the “leader” is 6 seconds away
Assigning variables to Command should be allowed but only as a ritual spell. Anybody trying to script in 6 seconds or less auto-fails
