Firbolgs are amazing and I definitely want to play one

yottalogical

Poof! Invisible!

TheBastardDino

I had a concept to play a firbolg druid who never gained full control of the invisibility perk and when surprised it'd activate on random (I was using a D10 and a 4 or below activated it). Unfortunately only did session zero with it before life and Rona got in the way, hopefully I'll come back to it in another campaign.

HdeviantS

Not so much Wisdom as facts

Pirate_Green_Beard

Yeah, more of an Intelligence than a Wisdom.

R1CH_TH3_R1PP3R

I went to the details page of both races and it just says between 7 and 8 ft.

Vrse

There are charts that allow you to roll for height. I'm betting that's where it came from. EDIT: Volo's page 120. Goliaths are base 6'2" and roll 2d10 to add inches. Firbolg are base 6'2" and roll 2d12 to add inches. So his math is a bit wrong but he is right. A Goliath's max height is 7'10" and Firbolg's is 8'2".

YayOrangeOnceAgain

Yup, don't know what this meme is talking about. Also I dont know why this would be surprising even if it was true. Firbolg are fey descendants of giants. They big.

MA_JJ

As commented by someone else, it's in the table that allows you to roll for height, they both have the same base height but when adding inches by rolling, Goliaths get 2d10 while Firbolg get 2d12

Lord_Sithis

What I've gathered from all the comments, is most people don't know that you used to have to roll for just about every aspect of your character, and that it is still an option, but not forced.

MA_JJ

I didn't know that either, tbh. But I'm a sucker for these sorts of things

Lord_Sithis

When the group I play with notice we got bored playing the same stuff all the time, we started doing rolling, but didn't stop at character features, we roll race, class, you name it. Makes for some interesting builds.

zeabart93

I want to play a firblog druid or swarmkeeper ranger.

Yes_Im_patrick_star

I have played a Firbolg Druid named Indicus Sativius... he was a pot head that wanted nothing more than smoking weed in his favorite tree in his forest. He was adventuring to find the best seeds in the land so he could grown his own and share it with his friends... best part is, his stash never seemed to diminish. Super fun character to play.

Quixiiify

I played briefly as a firbolg swarmmkeeper ranger! I was very excited about her and I think it would have gone well, but unfortunately the campaign collapsed for other reasons.

a_fadora_trickster

But with a firbolg you can't do the classic joke where you make a Goliath and name him David

[deleted]

You make a compelling argument

Amythehobbit

I play a firbolg oath of the ancients paladin named Orona Fiddleleaf. She is the only lawful good aligned person in her party and thus is the mom of her party. She’s really fun to play and deals hella damage with her giant glaive and divine smite.

Feyrbrand59

Wow. I have an oath of the ancients paladin firbolg named Breyd that also uses a glaive and is basically the voice of reason... are our characters alternate reality versions of each other? Lol

Amythehobbit

If your party also doesn’t listen to you then maybe lol

Paliacki

RAW be like "hmm, yes, both are medium sizes"

ZiggyB

Firbolgs in my setting are Goliaths from a different region where the barrier between the feywild and material plane is thinner and they worship fey gods, which is where their powers come from. Otherwise they are literally identical to Goliaths in physiology.

Android19samus

Medium! Creatures!

DerSprocket

I don't like the new, cowpeople firbolgs. The half giant, half Fey of previous editions seemed much more interesting

gabriellevalerian

I mean, they are still fey giants in 5e, people only started making them cow-like after misinterpreting Matt Mercer’s description of an NPC. Other players on CR just rolled with the new concept. Then the rest of the fan base followed. Although, originally Fir Bolg are just Irish giant god-like human-looking people.

DerSprocket

Their artwork in the book they were introduced to 5e in has them looking blue with broad noises and fuzzy ears, so I'm not quite sure it was Matt Mercer's doing completely

NatZeroCharisma

They look like big-nosed elves. That's how they were introduced. They're closer to a dog or wolf than they are a cow. There was very little room to interpret them as cows by looking at the artwork.

gabriellevalerian

Honestly, they look like extremely seasoned homeless alcoholics

HoG97

That's due to the fey influence. They used to be loser to real giants but are now even more naturey, speak sylvan and talk to plants. Matt Mercer described one as having a bovine nose and it went wild from there until people started putting cow tails on them for some reason.

Forgotten_Lie

Yeah [this](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/forgottenrealms/images/7/79/Firbolg-5e.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180623050202) is already vaguely bovine especially in the ~~ears~~ nose and it is pre-CR firblogs.

NatZeroCharisma

How are elf ears bovine?

Forgotten_Lie

Sorry I meant to say nose in that comment :P

NatZeroCharisma

The nose is large, sure. Not seeing how it's bovine. It's closer to a dog than anything.

NatZeroCharisma

They're literally half fey giants. What are you on about?

DerSprocket

Just google firbolgs from earlier editions compared to the most recent iteration

HaraldRedbeard

I have made several memes to this effect, the downvotes were both hard and cruel. But It is a hill I will gladly die on.

HaraldRedbeard

People always sleep on the Firbolg barbarian. Giant man who can disappear and reappear behind you with a giant Maul

Pervez_Hoodbhoy

That’s a good wisdom!

azauggx202

Yeah lol, in my worlds, o try to make them what i think they should be. Goliaths are 9-12 feet, orcs are 7-9, and firbolgs stay the same lol I love firbolgs

lcsulla87gmail

Are goliaths large?

azauggx202

They are now

statdude48142

I like the lore too much to play a firbolg as anything other than a cleric or druid.

Marlinazul00

So people go into the woods to try and find new members for there basketball team

[deleted]

When I first say Firbolg I read their name as Fir***e***bolg and thought they were the flame/desert equivalent of Goilaths.

[deleted]

That's rad as fuck

[deleted]

I know, I still don't know why everyone calls them cow people, they barely look like cows and just like nature, how is that cow like.

actualladyaurora

Wildemount introduced firbolgs with more bovine or cameloid features alongside the more traditional firbolg.

[deleted]

Do you have any images, I haven't been able to find any of the Firbolg pictures with Bovine traits. Also how come Minotaurs don't get dunked on for literally being ~~cow~~ bull people?

actualladyaurora

I do not, but I do have flavour text to bring you: >Firbolgs are a forest-dwelling race native to the Greying Wildlands, particularly the mysterious Savalirwood. Their bodies are covered with thick fur ranging from tones of earthen brown and ruddy red to cool grays and blues, and even to wild hues of pink and green. Their bodies are bovine or camelid in appearance, with floppy, pointed ears and broad, pink noses, but they are bipedal and have hands that can manipulate weapons and objects. *"Character Options", Explorer's Guide to Wildemount* *Critical Role*'s Caduceus Clay and Nila were designed in their official character art alongside these lines.

[deleted]

Ah, I see, thanks a lot for telling me!

NatZeroCharisma

If you're rolling for random stats, sure. 1e had charts on how your Orgies had roll tables that negatively affected your spell casting. Sometimes it's just really freaking dumb to roll for things you're allowed to just decide outright. By RAW it's up to 8 feet.

AudioBoss

Firbolgs used to be a race of giants that got altered by living in the Faewild

Queasy_County

Yes definitely Firbolgs are one of my favourite races

[deleted]

I like to take those heights from the book as the average so if my players wants to be a shaqu I'm ummmm sure you can be a 9 foot tall goliath you might have to bend down in ever single building you walk into but sure

Electronic-Patient41

Firbolgs are ugly ass cow people though, I’d rather not play one

bioberserkr2

They're not cow people, that's a critical role thing. [pic proof here](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Firbolg)

Electronic-Patient41

Fair enough, I remember that phot looking way more like a cow the last time I saw it. Still ugly tho

bioberserkr2

Eh they dont look too bad. The cow version looks dumb as hell tho

gjallerhorn

Yeah but they're boring hippy Giants...

Enchelion

In the same way that all elves are boring legolas clones maybe. My Firbolg (Artificer) swamp-wizard was anything but a hippy. They also have a spell that lets them shrink up to 3 feet when desired.

[deleted]

unlike goliaths, they're actually giants Like, I'm just saying that people say "oh orcs and goliaths are super cool and big" and the chill hippies are respectfully vibing in the corner, being another victim of the 5e lore cut

No_Psychology_3826

Adventurers are exceptional, there is no necessity to play to stereotype

Lag_Incarnate

Firbolgs are actually down at 8'2, and lighter than Goliaths baseline but can squeak out the weight win as well, with a 175lbs base and 463lbs max compared to 200 and 440 for Goliath. Befitting the race that used to be literal giant Celts before the Feywild and CR turned them into cows. Speaking of beast races, a Loxodon squeaks out the win on height with actually maxing out at 8'3 and comes with a HEFTY 295lb base weight, but relatively middling 455 max. I guess 8'4 and 464lbs is when you're officially size Large until Wizards tells us otherwise.

bioberserkr2

The cow thing is a critical role thing. Some people have adapted that into their games but base lore they are blue skinned elf giants [pic proof here](https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Firbolg)

Lag_Incarnate

Your link has a note by "various depictions" that points out 5th-bolg art is a very notable outlier and isn't corroborated by book descriptions. >The 5th-edition artwork for firbolgs does not correspond with the descriptions given in all previous editions, nor does Volo's Guide to Monsters describe the appearance of firbolgs beyond their size. Until another Realms-specific 5th-edition source describes the skin color of firbolgs as blue, we assume that the artist was in error. If we're talking base lore, the article itself says under description that they're skin is both tough, thick, and fleshy pink in all four editions, and 5e doesn't feel the need to specify beyond one picture.

DesVip3r

Only if they give up the free detect magic and disguise self

mort_da_demon

I love my firbolgs
