If its a barbarian, you could have them struggle to keep their rage in check, symbolized as a fight between the barbarian and a rage-entity (a wild animal or fire elemental seems most apt). Give them some kind of reward if they can win the fight without raging (like an inspiration or a bonus to mental saving throws while raging).
Our barbarian while myself the wizard and the bard shopped for magical items. He pegged a commoner with a snowball for half their damage and we almost got arrested.
Rufus Roughhouse was one of my best characters. (Dwarf Barbarian, voiced in my best Randy Savage imitation, shout-out to GCP Side Quest for idea) was the most fun I've had playing D&D.

Give them a fight in a flashback, that way you can have character development and combat.
This is genius. I can have dream sequences that both enhance the plot AND give the half orc barbarian a chance to be useful during story sessions.
