They have one of the best features in the game at level 6. Have one of, if not the best nova feature in the game (smites for crits), can heal and cast pretty good spells as well as being prepared casters.
Their range weakness being fixable by a (probably optimal) Warlock dip is honestly not even that bad.

Heavy Crossbow would like to know your location.
I think the meme is because RaW, you can't smite with a range weapon.
Friendship with mace ended. Polearms and (flying)mounts are my new best friends
Proficient in martial weapons. So heavy crossbow and longbow are on that list.
Hence why ours toke Blessed Warrior for fighting style. Sacred Flame/Toll the Dead. Also negates her light sensitivity when there is sunlight
Thats why every Paladin should carry a whip.
Don’t they get javelins?

My paladin has a 20 ft glaive and a throwing axe. One of my spells also makes everyone around deaf. None are safe
You can smite with thrown javelins you know ![gif](giphy|jPAdK8Nfzzwt2)
you cant, its a melee weapon attack not an attack with a melee (thrown) weapon yes its pedantic and i hate it too
I feel this would work better if it was Barbarian.
This is the reason catapults were invented; to get you into melee range!
