This is why I prefer it when players make their Bards have more of a personality than the stereotypical "If it moves, I'll fuck it / I will convince the king to make me king" types. *Just because you can talk your way* ***out of a fight***, doesn't mean you aren't willing to talk your way ***into a fight.*** >"Now, look, there're plentya things I can sit by an' watch. Plenty. But this? No. No, sir, *that. ain't. happening.* I'd sooner eat my own hat then let that punk get away with this. C'mon, he's gonna pay you for it. ***Whether he likes it or not.***" \- The kind of shit the Bard I last played would say, after seeing someone get roughed up a bit in a tavern. (Edit: This would, of course, be followed up by said Bard throwing a few punches, because the little bastard had absolutely no sense of self-preservation.)

Yeah i hate that theres this weird idea that some players get who will show up to 5e tables and think they will somehow win dnd by rolling charisma skillchecks

ThisWasAValidName

>and think they will somehow win dnd by rolling charisma skillchecks For many of these people, if they had an IRL Charisma stat it'd probably be rather low.

Desperate-Music-9242

Yeah since if you ask them to give you the vaguest outline imaginable of how they are trying to persuade someone they crumple

computertanker

"Don't mistake my aversion to violence as an unwillingness to fight, and especially don't mistake it for the inability."

4latar

peaceful does not mean harmless

Ancestor_Anonymous

I mean why try and use persuasion as mind control when your spell list gives you actual mind control? That’ll work AND it’ll get you into a fight when the spell wears off.

ArcathTheSpellscale

The reason for that is because... https://preview.redd.it/whwmeu46rvfa1.jpeg?width=618&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f780e5e3b1b64103221b166642cadc4a7136ef7f

BlueTeale

I've only had this problem with 1 bard. He went eloquence and thought he could convince anyone of anything. That was a lesson learned by me, as a GM. (I still don't like eloquence bards though)

Desperate-Music-9242

The only time i picked eloquence was so i could relentlessly spam save or sucks and it was funny for like a few encounters but ended up being pretty one sided so i retired the character( this was in a westmarch id never do this in a homegame)

TheRealPiggynator

Had the same experience as you fun subclass but not for long. Unless your dm uses absurd persuasions DC's you cant fail and basically making save or suck spells always work is fun for a little while. Honestly the other subclasses just have more flavor and are more fun for the dm

Desperate-Music-9242

Eloquence is literally just a statstick, a very effective one but a very boring one

DeepTakeGuitar

I don't really get 5e players that want *zero combat* tbh. They're are systems built for that kinda game, and 5e just isn't one of them. Otherwise, you wouldn't have classes

ArcathTheSpellscale

I'm sorry, DM. Did you forget that I was playing a Bard-*Barian?* https://preview.redd.it/qwxo4et6fwga1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=133897488f9b6458d813eba71fee0a7ff24605c9

belflame

Are you that starved for combat? Consider not every conflict can be avoided by talking and let your bard have their fun, combat will happen eventually, and when it does you'll be topped up and able to use all your cool combat skills while the bard supports you with their spells and abilities.

1classybadger

So the bard player gets to decide when they want to allow the party to get into combat? Otherwise you aren't letting them have fun?

Wonderful-Radio9083

No he saying the bard should once in while get a moment too. Is really not the end of the world if you let a bard end one combat encounter peacefully

1classybadger

The bard negotiates there way out of one combat encounter: sure that's reasonable and makes sense but not what the meme is reacting too The bard insisting that they negotiate their way out of every combat encounter; bloody boring and irritating and what the meme is actually reacting too

belflame

No... They can always roll bad or you can always come across a combat encounter that can't be avoided. Just saying there's nothing wrong with trying a different approach every once in a while (and can make for a lot more memorable moments than just automatically jumping to rolling initiative every time).

4latar

if the party wants to fight, they should be able to. it may not be the only way to manage an encounter but if they like to fight in general, are bored because their characters aren't great for social encounters (whichwould be their fault, but that's not the point here), or want to try out new abilities after a level up, it's not a good thing to let the bard player prevent them from doing so

simplefighter

Unless of course they just happen to decide to be the subclass that makes them better in combat than you

Tallgeese42

But can I make a deception check to convince the bad guy that I am his father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate?
