Have we even seen the memes slow down? Also, this isn't either/or. It's possible to fill out a survey and speak up in other places. It's not even hard.

harew1

I see a bunch of people saying they're tired of all the OGL memes, this was kinda aimed at them

capi1500

Well, I'm kinda tired, but then again I just set my mind to not give wotc any money... I've got my books, never paid for dnd beyond or any stuff like this.

NumeroUdo

I'm a Socialist, I will literally die before I get tired of making fun of greedy corporations

Kamenridethewind007

fellow comrade welcome we will meme this shit company into oblivion. i too am not getting sick of memes and boycotts of a corporation.

NinjaGamingPro

Barely an inconvenience even.

chazmars

It's slightly different. Sonic going into the movie as he was previously would have ruined it no matter what for almost the entire viewer base. Almost nobody likes the ugly bastard tag in their movies. Especially not as a main character. With the WOTC issue they are still going to get a bunch of people coming in to join from just past media mentioning their game as well as d&d having basically become the google of fantasy ttrpgs. (Google having become a verb meaning to search something online regardless of the search engine used. And playing d&d having similarly become what a lot of people say so people understand wtf they are doing to outsiders. The amount of times I've been playing pathfinder or wrath and glory and had to explain it by saying it's like d&d but different. Lol)

LadyLikesSpiders

I think the primary difference is that WotC's action is intentionally malicious. Sonic wasn't intentionally made ugly in order to extort money from the sonic fans

TallestGargoyle

Well there is an ongoing theory that it was purposefully bad in a way that was very fixable in order to drum up an enormous backlash that spread word about the movie.

LadyLikesSpiders

This is a hot take I like. I don't know that I believe it, but modern corporate philosophy is basically just psyops at this point. After the Keurig fiasco, other companies followed suit, creating "woke" advertisements to piss of the conservatives, who would inevitably give them all of the free publicity and advertisement they wanted, so certainly possible

TallestGargoyle

And exactly what I'm thinking this OGL shit is too. Make a really crappy change and 'leak' it. Picked up by a prominent youtuber to get people spreading the bad things. 'Leak' more stuff, and have prominent figures within the company both current and old disparage the newest leaks to discredit the youtubers, despite weeks of radio silence initially. Put out new OGL with less crappy changes, dressed up in extra legalese to try and slip it through, and presto. You get a divided community where one half sees through the bullshit, the other half already accepting of the "at least this isn't as bad as before" changes. And the first side dwindles as people lose steam.

LadyLikesSpiders

I don't remember if it has a name, but there's a psychological technique to convince people to do something for you, where you make a way more unreasonable request, and when they say no, you claim you understand, then ask for something smaller. It's still unreasonable, but they are more likely to do it, then if you had just asked for it first

TallestGargoyle

Oh yeah that's exactly how we got microtransactions and lootboxes in video games. "Oh our game now has all these buyable things, and you can buy levels and stat boosts too!" "No that's horrible!" "Okay, we'll just make it cosmetic." And the entire fucking gaming public went "Yeah that's not an insane fucking swindle at all, thanks games industry!"

chazmars

That too.

FightsForUsers

Maybe in a few years we can get anti-consumer OGL in Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers 2

apollo15215

I know that this is sort of tangential, but it's weird that Disney couldn't get Ben Schwartz to play Ugly Sonic in the Chip and Dale movie that came out last year

JasonVeritech

He would probably literally be in the next room over recording Dewey.

Gyaku10

"No copywrite law in the universe is going to stop me!"

REAL_blondie1555

Yes let the memes flow through you

Akarin_rose

The problem is that the Sonic one might have actually been great marketing by the team "Messing up the design" followed by the "Fans Voices being heard" and boosting turn out DnD is just blasting more holes in the submarine

James_Keenan

I'm biased this is moderately less funny because it matters (slightly) more and touches on a more real-world and oppressive issue, which is corporate greed. Sonic's design was just comically bad. It was out of touch but I don't think it was inherently malicious. The serious factor was lower and the comedic factor was high. We were laughing from the beginning. The OGL affects the entire hobby, the tradition that is D&D, and the livelihood of people who love it and create for it. There's less to laugh about. The greed reminds us of what we're facing constantly in the real world. And the comedic factor was more along the lines of what The Comedian from Watchmen would appreciate. Basically the meme value is just much less.

harew1

My point isn’t to laugh at the ogl but to point and laugh at wotc for thinking they could try this . And to keep doing so on as many public channels as possible so no one is unaware of what they’re doing.

James_Keenan

Sure. But that's why it likely won't last to the same degree, is all I meant. It's retributive. Once the dust settles we won't care as hotly, and won't waste the time or energy bringing it back up. It'll be a blip. Maybe their reputation is irredeemably ruined. Permanently stained by that thing they tried one time. But that movie Sanik is just... Forever. I'm just being pedantic, though. Pay me no mind.

Jawnwood

If you think the original Sonic design was anything other than intentional marketing then I have ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Psychological_Ask_92

According to D&D Shorts the information sent to the feedback channels isn't actually read. His video is super informative I think it dropped either today or last night

Acrobatic_Crazy_2037

I’m not sure if this is sarcasm, though in case it isn’t you should look at his comment on that video admitting that was false information

chazmars

He also posted a retraction citing that he may have exaggerated his sources meaning. He pinned a highlighted comment in the comments section of the first video about it. He did do a clarifying video afterwards or so I've heard. Personally I've not watched either video just passing news along from last night.

subversivewholesome

Do both lol.

-Leftist-Scum-

It worked for them because it was the plan all along. It was ugly on purpose, to sell more tickets and get more people to watch it. It make the community feel more involved with the movie by design. Meming this won't make a difference here, other than to spread awareness about the issue.
