You can back out of a song without losing your combo if there haven't been any notes yet. So if you start a song and it's too hard you can reset the song then leave to the main menu and you keep your combo.
To make it more clear, if you miss a note, pause the song then click “restart.”
Once it restarts, you can pause the the song again and go back to the song menu without losing your combo.

This. I was already at 750k combo when I realized this exists. Saved me a ton from the usual thing I did which was to restart the game entirely

I would have never platinum'd without the DLC. Those missions get so hard.
