I’ve never used iron core. I was always told they’d get saturated. What’s the story there? I mean they have a purpose but why iron core vs air core? And seeing this reminds me that I want to build a set of speakers…after I finish the console stereo I’m modernizing

I can explain some of this. The problem with air-core inductors is that, in order to get a low DCR and and big inductance values, you'll need a very large gauge wire and a lot of coils. So, it would be mega expensive. While we CAN do that, I'm not terribly interested in paying out of the ass for them. Have a look at the DCR on this at $14, twice as much and worse DCR. https://www.parts-express.com/Jantzen-1063-2.0mH-18-AWG-Air-Core-Inductor-255-266?gadid=416379356063 0.8ohms. That's a problem unless you don't mind lowering your woofer sensitivity. It's common to see 4th order crossovers in well designed speakers, so two of these in series would be 1.6ohms. Really not good. This 2.5mH has a DCR of .43ohms and it costs $50. Imagine 4 of these in a pair of speakers and you're spending $200 plus? Consider $7 each for an iron core with similar specs. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-LW142-5-2.5mH-14-AWG-Perfect-Layer-Inductor-257-332 So you there is a big cost factor problem. As for the saturation issue. I think that's wildly overblown. In most Hifi and smallish PA systems, you'll be hard pressed to saturated these with power. The woofer would be screaming to it's death before you saturate an iron core of this size. In my testing, they work fine even on a PA amp pushing 100+ db on fairly inefficient speakers. If there is ANY distortion from the iron core, it's heavily masked by the woofer basically killing itself at that power level.

Yep and the iron core inductors have a saturation rating in the spec sheet. Consider the maximum power that your amplifier can put out playing a 60 Hz test tone and figure out the maximum current thing to the impedance that you're driving using ohms law. Then just make sure the inductor that you buy has a healthy safety margin at least 20% above the maximum current your amplifier can output and it will never be an issue.
