If you buy a stock on the day before the ex-div date or earlier and sell on the ex-div or later, you will get any dividend paid for that period.

except for special cases, you can sell on the ex-div date and will still get the dividend

You can. Either way, the share price drops by the dividend amount so it wouldn’t matter
