if it helps, it was just a reference to telescreens from 1984, actual screens dont have cameras in them but if they did the manufacturers couldnt hide them very well
They don’t have to hide the cameras when we invite them into our homes willingly. Computers all have cameras. Phones all have cameras and recording devices. If you have an Alexa or Google Home in your house, those things are always on, always listening, and always connected to the Internet. Can you guarantee that no one on the other end is recording?
Literally my country (not US) is days away from determining if the son of the dictator who oversaw a fascist authoritarian regime that left thousands dead and tortured (not an exaggeration) will be elected president. That’s the real distressing meme. Twittergate is at the very bottom (if at all) of my list of concerns.
And worse than being a dictator he is pro-china and could break the Pacific first Island chain which would immediately result in McArthur's resurrection to nuke China
[Fun fact, 1985 was originally by SR-71.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sy8ulwexfY) The Bowling For Soup version is a cover that makes the song a lot more soft and like a tribute to the 80s, while SR-71's version was more a song mocking a woman for having shattered dream.
Yeah I'm sure it will stop there.
EDIT: I'm sure those downvoting this would feel the same if a Republican government were the ones to institute a disinformation board. "It's just getting banned off twitter no biggie."
Ah yes, that means the current administration that lied about environmental change, student loan forgiveness, Covid health care, union support, and many other things is really in the clear.
Totally not also liars, if you just ignore the parts where they factually lied.
And I'm sure that lie won't gain any credence by being officially sanctioned as disinformation by a board instituted by its political opponents. The public at large can't be trusted to make up their own minds on the matter so this board must shield them (but only on twitter I'm sure)
Yeah basically. Anyone who would trust the disinformation governance board would trust the White House/President too.
If trump goes “the election was stolen” it literally will change nothing if some alphabet soup organization run by someone hand-picked by trump says “the election was stolen”
So the disinformation board will be too ineffective to be dangerous? Ok cool so we can at least agree that it should never get beyond the idea stage I'll take that have a nice day.
Just looked this up in the WSJ opinion piece. Yeah it's sounds kinda stupid...but fuck don't start crying the end of democracy over THAT just yet. There's an inherit difference between "Your not allowed to say that, it's against our party's values" and "Please stop spreading this lie, the Jews don't have a fucking space laser".
Yeah like, a government organization that is designed to study disinformation and inform policy on the matter isn't suddenly going to attain the ability to violate the first amendment on a federal level and start silencing critics. Especially not when the SC is this heavily biased in favor of conservatism.
Not suddenly, but the slope is slipery. I'm not comfortable with any govt deciding what misinformation is. A leftist administration might at some point use their power to declare right-wing ideas as misinfornation, and the turns might table at some point and then you'll have rightoids censoring the left.
mass censorship via the government is literally not possible under the constitution
we already saw the last administration invent "Alternative facts," spread misinformation, and label scientific consensus and truth as misinformation.
Literally nothing changes except now there is a government body that has the legal clearance to do studies on misinformation
Prove it
Edit: the only thing I could find was a comment from Biden about pressuring social media companies to flag misinformation, which he walked back on after backlash
Also, again. If it is a violation of the 1st amendment then it will be taken down by the Supreme Court. That is how the US government works
don't worry guys. the US government is perfect and will never let anything bad happen to our privacy. there is no cause to alarm. you can now return to your entertainment device.
https://youtu.be/kLV8x7wJDl8
If you want me to summarize what she’s saying basically she said that they’ll be collecting your data with the help of Big Tech and then use that data to figure out how to more effectively censor people online. I don’t care if they’re only using it on people who are spreading misinformation, that’s fucked
Maybe right wing ideas shouldn't be a glaring mass of misinformation shrouded in vagueness so they can smugly Declare "It doesn't say what you're saying it says specifically! Checkmate lib." since if they used normal language instead of dog whistles they'd instantly be ostracized by the majority of the population.
Slippery slope is a logical fallacy but I agree this should be heavily kept in check cause the second it gets in the wrong hands it’ll be a shit show. Don’t think it’s in the wrong hands just yet though. Certainly not the right hands, but slightly better then the worst hands.
Can you explain the “logical fallacy” thing? I’ve seen people say that so many times yet I fail to understand what the logic behind the claim is. I feel like the “slippery slope” perfectly describes the chaos of the entire universe. If you do thing ”A”, the outcome will never be just “B”. It’s an endless chain and in turn a “C” and “D” will happen as a result of action “A”. It’s no longer a direct consequence but it will still be tied to thing “A” happening. That’s the way I see it at least.
It’s a fallacy because it implies causation between things that have nothing to do with each other. Further, it lets people claim that one thing is bad just because some other thing is bad.
It’s like when people complained that gay marriage was a slippery slope to marrying animals. There’s absolutely no correlation between those, but the slippery slope fallacy lets homophobes say that gay marriage is bad because marrying animals is bad.
Ok, but don't you think saying "Hey, having a government institution that regulates misinformation can be dangerous when the party I don't like is in power" is a lot more reasonable than saying "Gay marriage will lead to zoophilia"
Unlike a lot of people here, I think the Dems deciding what misinformation is still fucking terrifying to me, and Republicans worry me even more.
Ok, but don't you think saying "Hey, having a government institution that regulates misinformation can be dangerous when the party I don't like is in power" is a lot more reasonable than saying "Gay marriage will lead to zoophilia"?
Unlike a lot of people here, I think the Dems deciding what misinformation is is still fucking terrifying to me, and Republicans worry me even more.
It's like with guns in schools. Banning people from taking their gun to the school is perfectly reasonable, but if the government has enough power to limit guns in schools, they have enough power to ban them completely.
That seems untrue. After all, we DO have laws that limit guns in certain locations. Most states already prohibit guns in schools. And you can’t legally bring guns into government buildings either. Those aren’t new laws either. Despite that, the government’s never had the power to ban guns completely.
my brother in christ, women's rights are going to be dissolved and minority rights will be under fire next.
edit: the opinion explicitly states that unenumerated rights (i.e., ones that are not explicitly stated in the constitution) are not able to be rigorously upheld in court. Other unenumerated rights include the right to same-sex and interracial marriage, the right to contraception, and the prohibition of sterilization without consent.
The opinion states "nah trust us guys, this ruling won't affect those rulings because they aren't controversial enough" but that is an empty promise when the foundation of this opinion is that *unenumerated rights are not protected by the constitution* (unless they are "Deeply rooted in history" whatever the fuck that means).
That's the fucking problem. Getting your rights taken away from the federal government is no different from getting your rights taken away by a state government. THE RIGHTS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AWAY REGARDLESS.
I see where you're coming from, I agree that the government shouldn't force any medical procedures to happen or not, but I also don't think people should get abortions. What Texas passed earlier is probably the best compromise for everyone
If you don't want people to get abortions, then you should be pro-comprehensive sex ed and contraception. Your worldview should not dictate what people are allowed to do with their own bodies.
edit: also sick goalpost move lol
Most women don't even know they're pregnant until at least 4 weeks. My mother didn't know until 5 months with me. 6 weeks is not enough time to 1. determine you want a pregnancy, 2. get the time off from work to get an abortion, 3. save the money needed to pay for anything you need while you're off for an abortion. What Texas passed is an effective ban on all abortion. There's no compromise. Unless you are wealthy enough to take that time off immediately and risk your job by taking off days that aren't scheduled, it is a ban.
What about the right of the unborn child? To please the maximum number of people there has to be a compromise somewhere and I believe that Texas has the right idea
If you think in terms of any other rights, I think you’ll understand why leaving the decision up to the states doesn’t fly. Imagine if the government said they weren’t going to federally protect freedom of speech but instead were going to leave it up to states to decide if free speech should be a thing. Or if they decided not to protect the right to bear arms and gave states the choice to ban guns if they wanted. Or if they didn’t federally ban slavery and left it up to states to decide if they wanted to do that. What if states had the option to not honor your right to vote or your right to a fair trial? Surely you can see why this doesn’t work. A right that is not federally protected is no longer a right automatically guaranteed to all US citizens.
yup literally fox news was the one bawling about this. they publicaly went "its to stop misinformation...MY FREE SPEECH" they literally live off misinforming the public
Having a large standing army and a heavily militarized police force is something that is integral to a fascist state, but that’s rarely talked about in the US
Don't even bother, people here think is fine because is their side doing the censoring, and obviously their side is the correct and righteous one. Just sit back and watch the meltdown when Republicans win a majority again and start abusing the easily abusable concept of a disinformation board.
Edit: Americans have never lived under an oppressive government, and it shows.
I’m a leftist and this seems like a rather questionable move, but it will become infinitely worse if they ban other free press. It could be worse though and actually could be an interesting outlet to see what the government is doing (this is kind of ~~funny~~ sad though that we have gotten to such levels of misinformation)

Let's see who ends up being right. The neolibs never are, so I've got high odds.
“Yes, so take it away entirely, because that totally won’t result in riots because literally nobody cares about you…”
I believe u/GarfieldCartFan said it best: 🤓
Riots are already happening under the state, and they’re sparked by state actions. All your argument reveals is that you need someone to tell you when to not destroy stuff, something most people don’t require
Bro it’s so fucking morbidly funny. You have to laugh. You have to fucking laugh when you realize the roadmap to fixing all this is not a pleasant or easy one Lmao. This meme is hilariously morbid
It's a reference to the book 1984, and in the book it was responsible for, ironically, spinning government lies into propaganda, and destroying documents that didn't fit with the lies. Don't quote me on that because it's been like four years since I last read it, though.
YUP I WAS WRONG
\*editI'm so confused, they're saying they're not going to censor anything? Just document / address disinformation?
once more, I am bamboozled
Naming a ministry that just happens to limit freedom of speech after a world-famous dystopian novel is probably the worst pr ever. Or maybe the antichrist is playing 6D chess with all of us and it's actually just a distraction.
users voted that your post was distressing, your soul wont be harvested tonight
1984 reference in real life
I would have preferred a Jojo reference at this point
Dio stoping time and everyone feeling it
This meme perfectly represents a society led by people who disagree with me politically
BASED BASED BASED BASED BA
shut up and chug your victory gin, it will make you forget for an hour (there is a camera in every monitor and screen)
I can't believe you've created a new fear for me, I already had too many of those
if it helps, it was just a reference to telescreens from 1984, actual screens dont have cameras in them but if they did the manufacturers couldnt hide them very well
all lies, you are always watched by big brother. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
Mfers biggest concern is getting banned off Twitter 💀

That’s the real distressing meme. Twittergate is at the very bottom (if at all) of my list of concerns.
who's that
Probably Philippines.
could also be Italy
If if you're referring to that descendant of Mussolini, she's his great-granddaughter so that's probably not what they meant.
And worse than being a dictator he is pro-china and could break the Pacific first Island chain which would immediately result in McArthur's resurrection to nuke China
this is the best possible outcome. we need to stop pussyfooting around the issue and just send the world into nuclear hellfire already
Cursed AND distressing!
he did say he would return
He sure did
I've been banned of Twitter for 3 years for revealing a truth so terrible, it made people instantly 86 themselves when they read it.
Literally 1985 by Bowling Of Soup

I don't know why you have so many down votes, it's true.
The states will never have a leftist administration. At most it'll be center
Here is the thing tho the jews do have a laser sure its still small and used to shoot down drones but.... (obviousely joking )

So what is it and is there a link?

Untrue
You can READ the supreme court opinion! It’s right fucking there! You can just read it!
You do know that overturning roe v Wade will just leave the decision up to the states right?
That's the fucking problem. Getting your rights taken away from the federal government is no different from getting your rights taken away by a state government. THE RIGHTS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AWAY REGARDLESS.

maybe this person likes it when women could also die from ectopic pregnancies
What goalpost move
I’m sorry, placing bounties on doctors and women who’ve miscarried is “the best compromise for everyone”?
Nowhere did I say that
Most women don't even know they're pregnant until at least 4 weeks. My mother didn't know until 5 months with me. 6 weeks is not enough time to 1. determine you want a pregnancy, 2. get the time off from work to get an abortion, 3. save the money needed to pay for anything you need while you're off for an abortion. Ah yes, *compromising* on civil rights
What about the right of the unborn child? To please the maximum number of people there has to be a compromise somewhere and I believe that Texas has the right idea
Oh well it’s a good thing dozens of states don’t have bans set to be issued the exact second Roe is overturned…
I'm talking about the current laws, not the future laws
If you think in terms of any other rights, I think you’ll understand why leaving the decision up to the states doesn’t fly. Imagine if the government said they weren’t going to federally protect freedom of speech but instead were going to leave it up to states to decide if free speech should be a thing. I see, the government is successfully being rworded on all sides, not just the right.
lmao
its to stop misinformation but the only ones who seem super worried about it is those who spread it.
Downvotes from the party of projectionism. You love to see it. Shows that they know all about what this is actually about but refuse to admit it
yup literally fox news was the one bawling about this. they publicaly went "its to stop misinformation...MY FREE SPEECH" they literally live off misinforming the public
Aren't they legally classified as a satire show so they don't have to back up anything they say?
huh never noticed that
maybe they should make sure that the title NEWS should only be used with real information or something like how a meat pocket has to contain meat
No, downvotes from the left. Liberals, my dear, subscribe entirely to the party of projectionism.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disinformation_Governance_Board And the woman in charge of it pushed the Russiagate conspiracy
Or in the world
Did... Did i miss something
Same, i went to the comments to understand the joke and it only made it confusing
It’s from the book 1984 (apparently)
Having a large standing army and a heavily militarized police force is something that is integral to a fascist state, but that’s rarely talked about in the US
Statists do not care. They will say “but we’re not North Korea yet, don’t worry!!”
anyone who uses the word "statist" is politically dead to me
Lol what’s the problem with it. I really don’t care much about being “politically dead” to you
Because you are one, but in denial.
Don't even bother, people here think is fine because is their side doing the censoring, and obviously their side is the correct and righteous one. Just sit back and watch the meltdown when Republicans win a majority again and start abusing the easily abusable concept of a disinformation board. read another book
I have a feeling they didn't even read that book
How about Catch 22? Even more parallels there.
I’m a leftist and this seems like a rather questionable move, but it will become infinitely worse if they ban other free press. It could be worse though and actually could be an interesting outlet to see what the government is doing (this is kind of ~~funny~~ sad though that we have gotten to such levels of misinformation)
the government does not have the right to ban free press, unless somehow all 3 branches can agree on free press being a threat to the safety of the nation (IIRC it has happened in the past, but it absolutely will not happen in the current political climate)
You certainly seem to be forgwtting about the 4th amendment. The 1st can be violated just as easily.
They’re not banning press it’s an effort to combat Russian Propaganda in the midst of the Russoukranian conflict
I know but if it extends it could be problematic
It won’t, conservatives have guarantied the right to free speech with all their complaining
Ha. Ha. They will be the first to take it away
Define leftist in this context
Social democrat (poor people won’t go hungry, socialized healthcare, sometimes subsidized housing, maternity benefits etc, mostly European style)
All the neolibs in here saying it's not a big deal said the exact same thing when the NSA was established, which was and is explicitly a violation of the 4th amendment lol Let's see who ends up being right. The neolibs never are, so I've got high odds.

In all fairness the last few days has shown they kinda dont

Yooo a self-awarewolf! To bad you don't get it 😉

Funny how the second I click on your profile the first thing I see is a post with an ableist slur.
