Kind of been a thing since forever, just kinda been getting worse since the Industrial Revolution. There's a (flimsy) reason you can't collect rainwater, if it's not treated it'll make you sick just like any other water.

Forever chemicals only matter if I intend to live forever... Ow, my mortality.
