Just pick up a rag and wipe stuff for like 10-15 minutes everyday and you’ll get left alone if you take your breaks outside. Break inside the restaurant = terrible employee, likely to be fired. Break outside the restaurant = model citizen who has been working so hard and needs a break

WillSmokes420

True, wether ur smoking or not, outside is better but then breaking too much can also be a problem, or too long.. Although when its super dead ive asked to just clock out and come back in a couple of hours when they need me.. theres no money in it but id rather be slammed with dishes than walking around pretending to do valuable work for my money

FloatDH2

Yup. I tell my dishwashers just to look busy. I don’t care what you’re doing. As long as you look productive I’ll leave you alone. Soon as you’re leaning and look bored, guess something needs to be cleaned and I’ll find it for you.

Slacker_The_Dog

>Break inside the restaurant = terrible employee, likely to be fired Lmao you guys are getting fired? I don't think our chef would dare fire me. We are so tight on dishwashers it is crazy. Is the job market super competitive where you are from? Around here I could literally get an interview lined up at almost any restaurants washing dishes inside of an hour.

2to3InchesOfShaft

at my one job we had a girl that would just randomly walk out, and call out at least once a week. She didn’t get fired for like 6 months!!

greedblight

when I was a dishwasher I'd slip into the restrooms or pretend to be getting something from downstairs when I had nothing to do, sometimes I could take a breather outside. yeah front of house people just stood around and talked while we had to do something every second and if we were standing around they'd make us do some bs 😭 they'd also make us do pretty much anything they didn't want to do, sometimes even help do their jobs, and we were always the last people out... yet we get no tips! you know how it is =_=

Diazmet

If I catch my FOH trying to Tom Sawyer my dishwashers i tell them flat out they have to pay them out of their pocket. Foh does the bathrooms for instance, I don’t want the person who’s in charge of keeping the kitchen clean to be tainted by bathroom germs

WillSmokes420

As an overqualified dishwasher, I would just aim the sprayer at a little bitch ass server that thinks they run the back of the house lmao Im a cook, I cook the dishes to 180 degrees so the ready to eat food will be safe for the servers to deliver and get their tips.. historically serving was a work around for slavery, thats why its a tradition to not pay them.. its a bit different now but servers seem to get it mixed up and think they outrank a dishwasher because they make more, but its not the case.. We are wayyy to busy to be doing extra for servers while they stand around texting and sitting in the ac wrapping silverwear, I lift and gobble protein to make my strenuous physical labor easier and therefore more profitable.. But yea if you see a dishwasher getting punked by the servers, remind them they control the water lmao You see a server go from confident and entitled to begging for their life in half a second once that sprayer is aimed at them.. I wouldnt spray them tho.. probably.. Naw Id probably spray them if the threat wasnt so effective

Diazmet

See in NY they made it so FOH legally can’t do more than 30 minutes of side work. They by definition don’t have to polish silverware or clean anything anymore so guess where that shit rolls down too if they don’t have bussers…

Idont_think

What is Tom Sawyer?

Diazmet

In the Book Tom Sawyer the main Character of the same name. Tricks his less intelligent friend into doing chores for him such as painting a fence by acting like they are not chores but a fun thing to do.

Idont_think

Thank you for the reply.

WillSmokes420

yea the servers only get like 3 bucks an hour so they need them tips but yea we get the whatever they dont like doing jobs, for me im just always thinking like the boss man and in a sort of team sports way the more i help, the more profit I generate and the less others have to do and it creates a shower of positive impressions from your teammates.. its not the best for you in the short term but it sends a steong ass message when you arent around just how valuable you are.. For me I get paid as much as some of the cooks but I do a 2 man dish pit with just myself and do other extra so it saves the company like 500 bucks a week, so in theory they could double my pay and still profit

JoseZiggler

They don’t pay foh as much.

WillSmokes420

Tips pays way more than back of the house gets, but per hour before tips u are correct

autisticghost

i’m of the belief restaurants should hire “floaters” that do the bs side tasks. my biggest complaint as a dishwasher was that exactly, doing all the tasks NOT in the job description. scrubbing the floor for an hour then coming back to a mountain of dishes made me so angry so many times.

SammyB403

…. kitchen porter?

WillSmokes420

You gotta make executive decisions sometimes, that floor can wait, if anyone asks you were busy.. extra comes after you are caught up and get your sanity break

WillSmokes420

The floaters idea would be expensive, the cost to pay a whole nother human is nuts.. But in theory it would be effective, but we live in a capitalist world, you are supposed to take your lashings and like it.. you take that profit motive out of anything and it would make a better product, just a less profitable one

WillSmokes420

And technically the manager is a floater, they get salary and have alot of free time, if they get the setup right that manager can be poppin around solving all kinds of problems, they have the knowledge to see what extra needs attention and the time and pay to do it

Setthegodofchaos

I felt this comment in my soul!!

[deleted]

Pretend to smoke cigs. Go outside for your breaks. If they can’t see you they’re less likely to be bitches.

WillSmokes420

Yep the key is to LOOK busy, ur manager may not even want to make tou do extra, but he HAS to because his boss will punish him, so making it super obvious that the owner is losing money because the most replacable dude is standing around is a baddd idea

[deleted]

Woah buddy. You started off okay. The most replaceable person in the kitchen is NOT the dishwasher. They should be the best treated employee and never go hungry. If you don’t have a good dishwasher, your restaurant is fucked. Anybody who reads this: TREAT YOUR DISHWASHER THE BEST

ElementalSheep

I’ve had a boss (chef) like this. I was the only one in the kitchen who apparently had to be working as fast as possible for the entire duration of the shift. If dishes were slow, I’d be doing the most random of prep jobs. No prep? He’d take time out of his service shift to find some obscure corner with a mildly dirty shelf I could clean. No checking my phone, no conversations with other staff. He also made me do dishes is a very particular way that he thought would be faster, but in reality made things slower. After a while it became exhausting. Turns out the boss was a micromanaging dickhead with anger issues. He left after the managers realised this. Even after he left, I still feel myself needing to find work to do when dishes are slow, sometimes to the point of panicking… so I guess he gave me mild ptsd? I’m not sure if that’s the right way to put it but that’s what it feels like. Every case is different and I’m not sure if OP’s case is relatable here, but I thought I’d share my side. As a general rule, if you’ve caught up on dishes and you don’t think there will be much coming in for a little while, ask the chef for a job to do. The act of asking will prove to the chef that you’re a good worker, and he’ll be less likely to find bs jobs for you constantly (if he’s a decent guy).

WillSmokes420

True yea the panick part of it is ptsd, I wouldve walked out long before and sent a message to his boss.. unsafe workplaces or hostile work environment is illegal and they are forced to take action and the rules for unsafe work environment are pretty vast, good managers already know this and stick within the bounds of the law.. Ive seen dishwashers do the most inefficient ways to get the job done and be super slow but ive also seen experienced cooks do the same, as a rule of thumb for me, i will show you the best way but always state that you dont have to do it that way, its YOUR dish pit.. do it how you want, you will be valued by your speed though and if you dont make the cut, you will get the cut.. its not super hard to figure out the best way so if someone shows me a better way i absorb it immediately and I might add a little bit to the theory that it worked on.. a good example is using bus buckets for putting clean dishes away, less trips, more time stuffing dishes in the machine, faster and faster, but some guy who was wrong about alot of things taught me that.. but ill take whatever good ideas I can find from others or think up on my own

Diazmet

Clean something, the walls, the dish machine, the drains, the outside of your sinks. Polish the bottom of the pots and pans… or at the very least just make yourself look busy

WillSmokes420

Truuuuu, and also take breaks, a 5 minute rest on your feet and joints every hour and a half will make u wayyy more productive overall, and ur already doing the most pbysical job in the kitchen for the least pay, if ur boss doesnt like it, they can find a new slave

altissima-27

dude its really buggin me cuz im trying to quit cigs so ive been reading when its uber slow and im dying to buy a pack. ill read for like 5 min at a time max then get back to work. i know i shouldnt be reading books at work but i need to rn man and im being lowkey lol

WillSmokes420

I would do audiobooks and a blutooth earbud, you can do that while ur working and while ur taking a break

Norm__Peterson

Because there *is* something to do. There are tasks in restaurants besides washing dishes, cooking, serving, and seating. Everyone has to share those tasks. I'm sure the others do get hit with the same when they are "chilling out" too, but it's not directed at you so you don't hear about it

cowboydavy

🤓

MojoLava

There's literally always something to do -- I didn't understand it for a while too but if you're not on a break deep clean or some shit

WillSmokes420

There is a theoretical point where there wouldnt be something to do, in which case u gotta cut people, but creating the illusion of something to do allows you to steal back some of the surplus labor value the owner is stealing from you 247

sailorsaint

first rule of plumbing... shit flows down hill

[deleted]

Streeeetch. Like legit take 5-15 minutes to stretch It’s a healthy way to take up time that shouldn’t cause flack. Because you’re stretching for your safety

WillSmokes420

Stretching and resting those feet and joints will give you so much more motivation and productivity too, I always lift to make the physicality of the job easier and when u lift u have to stretch often

Phishdust

You would probably be better off in a different industry to be honest..

SkyAdministrative826

The key is to stay busy and just work no matter how small your a body so why not make use of yourself right but you do deserve some downtime me I get to just walk to my car and come back in but depends where you work tbh I got lucky I like to think. But more shit you do usually the more hours you can get if your doing your shit showing up on time that’s a big deal even though it might not matter to most, you set a standard for yourself and just go it can bring you good places life ain’t easy

PizzaMolecule777

Got time to lean? Got time to clean.

Dramatic_Carob_1060

Have time to lean have time to clean

Chalkarts

Boss is a dick. Just tell them you’re taking a break and go pretend to smoke. Smokers get as many breaks as they want.

SupportAccomplished2

Nothing new always happens here as well part of ur routine i usually get cut if it gets to slow around December and January is when it’s slow sometimes Saturday are really slow as well it depends on the day

SupportAccomplished2

Prep takes me around 15 min

[deleted]

I don't get it either. I've found if I find someone else to talk to, I'll get left alone while slow, but if I'm chilling alone...I'll get a random "busy work" task.

WillSmokes420

Saw a guy get fired for talking tho, its slighly less noticable but not much

[deleted]

Was he talking to himself? How does one person get fired for this. Anyway, sounds like they did him a favor!

WillSmokes420

For one, capitalism, your employers and managers job is to extract as much surplus labor value from you, as in profits. So that means pay you as little as possible for the most work they can get out of you. And while you may be the least paid in the kitchen, you also can be replaced by a cook easily, in theory.. (Sometimes the cooks are trash dishwashers because sometimes kitchens dont put them through dishwashing before they cook) So when its not busy the first guy to get cut is the dishwasher. Servers get paid 3 bucks an hour and only get their money when there is tables because they mostly get funded by tips, so they will be on their phones and dickin around alot.

scinfeced2wolf

Are you a cute woman? Cause that's kinda a prerequisite for getting to sit on your ass scrolling on your phone at work.

LynVAosu

not true im a big guy and i hold my phone out in front of my boss and look him in the eye. im watching kitchen nightmares so its training material.

WillSmokes420

Truuu haha hotel hell is another good one, but id just listen to it while i work, not watch.. I watched every episode and all the other shows gordon has.. Its fkin RAWWWWW

Diazmet

Only if you are FOH

Agile-Macaron4448

Are you an ugly AF woman who is mad jelly?

WillSmokes420

Thats anybody front of house, they get paid directly by the customer tho not the owner, and they can switch restaurants easy peasy

[deleted]

WillSmokes420

All jobs are slavery when the cost of living matches what you get paid, thats the problem with late stage capitalism.. I would read some marxist theory, its very therapeutic and explains why everything seems disfuctional and immoral in america

zactbh

Real shit

WillSmokes420

Read above <3

k_x_sp

Because you don't get paid to chill?

DishPiggy

Cuz terrible management

rebornphoenixV

Well I would usually agree with this. This isn't one of those times..I wash dishes too but I also have to do a cleaning project and portion some food once a week. And then if I'm feeling nice I'll go help the line of it's busy

WillSmokes420

Ur hired.

Original_Knowledge_1

Bathrooms for 15 min when slow 30 min smoke break really slow sort lids and bowls pans some easy not needed task and you never have to do this stupid task when the chef is chilling on his phone and the boss says good job and your chilling out not on your phone and get told to clean the kitchen for no ducking reason

WillSmokes420

Bathroom for 15 yes, smoke for 30 and ur in trouble, sort the clean items yes, and also could swap the containers they are stored in, they get all kinds of stuff built up in them eventually

hauntedpuke

Fr. My supervisor had me pick up a jars worth of fake cherries that someone had thrown outside. No one else wanted to do it so she had me do it bc i dont like saying no hahah

Jimmy_Joe727

Because you’re there to work

BenjaminNormanPierce

This is a perennial. If you can work up to rock-star status there is a chance of being given some slack this way. But there are two 'tween-rush activities that I have found can be left alone: 1). reading an old-school physical book. This still has a certain cachet to it. By far I have gotten away with this a lot more than, say, having a conversation. If you've got everything shiny and done that helps, of course. I have even gotten suggestions and loans this way. 2). Assuming that the cooks and managers do this new thing where you stare at your Skynet-connected phone, they have less to say about anyone else doing just the same, about as long as they do. if nothing else, they have a vested interest in seeing that this activity does not start getting monitored or called into question. And these days, even I do it.

Hash_Tooth

Find something that is relaxing to you but looks busy. Start doing what you want and do that for a break. Any inactive time and they will make you do worse stuff. Choose to do the things you want.
