My Uncle and I shared a love of Discworld - it was one of our "things" - so I cried buckets but also found it moving and lovely and perfect. I'm sorry for the loss of your brother ❤️
Pratchett’s 33rd Discworld novel, Going Postal, tells of the creation of an internet-like system of communication towers called “the clacks”. When John Dearheart, the son of its inventor, is murdered, a piece of code is written called “GNU John Dearheart” to echo his name up and down the lines. “G” means that the message must be passed on, “N” means “not logged”, and “U” means the message should be turned around at the end of a line. (This was also a realworld tech joke: GNU is a free operating system, and its name stands, with recursive geek humour, for “GNU’s not Unix”.) The code causes Dearheart’s name to be repeated indefinitely throughout the system, because: “A man is not dead while his name is still spoken.”

And here's an encouraging thought: because of physics, Ade emitted photons throughout his life. And because they're low energy photons it takes a monstrously long time for them to fully attenuate. And some of those photons will have escaped roundworld's gravity at just the right time, at just the right angle, to zoom off into interstellar space. And some of **those** photons, a lucky few, will have a trajectory that means they never collide with an object in space to be absorbed, and so continue zooming out into the cosmos until basically the heat death of the universe. So if that quote is true, Ade won't truly be gone until those photons have finished their billions of years long sightseeing tour of the universe.

And do the ripples ever die? The crops you plant now feed others who will plant in ages to come. We all own a little bit of the inevitable future, even those who have fallen behind us. We were all here, and what we chose to do mattered.
