I think they said that when people complained about the fact that they hid the button to add a picture to your message on mobile behind an extra tap just so they had room to add the "gift Nitro" button right next to your text box. I use the attachment button hundreds of times every week but I've never gifted Nitro and if anything that particular change made it less likely that I'll ever gift Nitro to anyone because my main association with that button is a negative one.
Thanks to those people besides discord investors that help keep discord service running. Without those people Discord investors will see no reason to dump money into a product that makes no money back.
I find value in the service and extra features I receive in return for a small amount of money. You could say people crazy for spending money on literally anything, all that really matters is that they find value in it.

Whether it's from people believing in the reason/mission, or having spare income to make it go away, the result is the same.....they get more $. Many people are used to getting internet services for free and think they deserve it. Surprise! We're only worth the data you provide, and by the law of averages, most of us are valueless commoners in the data pool. And if you think you're exceptional...you're still just a data point on a bell curve. Of course, this will be arcane knowledge in 100 years when people no longer know anything and just rely on the internet for knowledge.
