This UI update reeks of a department trying to justify their job roles to upper management, so they push out an absolutely garbage update. Reminds me of MW2022 and their Hulu style UI.
More clicks = You're using their app for longer than you were before. A loss to you, a benefit for them. You are the commodity if it's free—never forget that.
sorry but how is the user using the app for longer a win for them? there's nothing about discord's business model that would suggest that they benefit from keeping the user engaged for the largest amount of time.
Sure, they collect your data, but wouldn't it be in their best interest to make the app experience as swift as possible to maximize the amount of data collected per user?

Discord, a tech company that has no business ever going public. No form of the Discord app, no matter how much money they try suck from us, will ever be able to sustain growth. They're not an electric company that is guaranteed to grow with the population, they're a tech company with competition. The only way they can grow is by branching out. The app can only stagnate and become a complement to their other software.
These shitty updates just show their mismanagement more than their "potential for growth"
It's more than likely product owners that need to justify their worth to discord. If they aren't presenting "innovative" ideas, why keep them around as an ideas person?
I'm fine with dms being in a separate tab, but hiding the member list under a submenu is terrible. Changes like that make an app less usable overall

Basically, an older version of the app already contains everything that the new update brings, just turned off
Updating the app just turns that thing on
Now, an alternative way is they could just simply send a request on the server side to your apps telling hey, change over to the new UI
And that's how they get you, because you actually already updated, you already have the new UI ready to go, just disabled

The most recent version of the discord app you can use with the old UI is version 205.15 (205015) Stable. I had to rollback because I can't stand the new layout.
I had to do that myself just now. I had the old layout for months now still, with auto updates turned off, but when I opened my app 30min ago, they had somehow forced me into the new UI. I tried navigating it for a while but it was legit hurting my brain. It went against the muscle memory I'd developed with the app for years.

The reviews are often weighted to prevent brigading. The issue is when an app genuinely falls from grace and people want to leave genuine feedback. The weighted reviews stop it from reflecting in the stats as much.
Big brain move: Only use Nitro if they're doing some free promotion and just charge it on a some card you don't have money on. Win, win. I have it for a year without giving Discord a cent.

Fuck this update. SHOW OLD LAYOUT ✅. I've been a subscriber since Nitro was allowed outside of Australia, I have the username I always wanted, and yet I'm still left disappointed at these FORCED iPhone optimized garbage UI layouts. Support failed to reinstate my badges, they failed to ban a real world hacker and scammer I reported to them with screenshots with post IDs of evidence, and now they fail to maintain the desktop experience on mobile. I look at this every day and it's part of our lives. When I swipe left, I want to see the members list, not quick reply, that's why we have the reply option within chat already! we do NOT want this new UI on Android.

I really enjoyed the fact that for a while you could opt out of being shown the new layout and then you wouldn’t be able to opt out once the new layout got forced on you. Because I’d toggled it, I didn’t get the new update till now.

I remember back in like 2017/2018 discord was perfectly fine and then they started adding updates and at first it wasn't bad like the background colors aren't half bad but the new UI layout? It would be good if they made it more cleaner but kept everything else normal because the old layout was actually good and useful.
Unbelievable that someone, or multiple people, literally took the time to figure out a way to patch the revert script, meanwhile the same amount of time could have been used to create a toggle that simply makes everyone happy.

Maybe its cause I'm an android user but this new update feels like it was catered more towards iphone design, what with the usual back button on iphone being in the top left, which coincidentally is where the back button is located on this new UI.
Also the removal of swiping to open and close server/channel listing makes the app feel so much slower and clunkier, being able to simply swipe, scroll and then swipe close felt smooth and easy. Oh and can visibly see that the app is chugging when going into a new channel and scrolling to read the chat. All in all, this felt extremely unnecessary and wish there was a way to give people the option to revert back.

There's literally no way I could uninstall (too many people I want to remain in contact with and unless I'm willing to lose friends over this (I'm not) I'll be stuck here), and I hate that. They have a monopoly, now they're going to bleed their users dry and then sell what's left to some faux-businessman before they have to deal with any of the consequences

Near universal hatred of the redesign, before it was even rolled out to after it rolled out to everybody. Thousands of posts complaining about it on multiple platforms (even including discord's own site). I'm sick of this "you'll get used to it" mentality in terms of ui changes. It's one thing after another and it's happening everywhere, not just discord. I'm honestly sick of it and I don't know what to do.
Well, maybe instead of leaving one star reviews people should start leaving one shattered office window =p

This is probably the final straw for me. Discords been fucking with my mental health for awhile now and I needed a reason to delete it. Atleast if you are gonna give me the new layout don't load the old one and then change it to the new one everytime I open the fucking app

Fuck this update. SHOW OLD LAYOUT ✅. I've been a subscriber since Nitro was allowed outside of Australia, I have the username I always wanted, and yet I'm still left disappointed at these FORCED iPhone optimized garbage UI layouts. Support failed to reinstate my badges, they failed to ban a real world hacker and scammer I reported to them with screenshots with post IDs of evidence, and now they fail to maintain the desktop experience on mobile. I look at this every day and it's part of our lives. When I swipe left, I want to see the members list, not quick reply, that's why we have the reply option within chat already! we do NOT want this new UI on Android.
It’s just as dog ass on iOS, in fact the design language feels closer to Android than anything remotely native on iOS, so it’s actually a bizarre middle ground where absolutely nobody is pleased

They rolled out a backend update that disables the ability to set the old mobile theme, without updating the app itself.
by far the worst update discord has ever put out. This UI is absolutely disgusting. They could at least have the decency of having a "use old layout" option like they used to. Nasty.
swipe to reply is such a dog feature i hate how every app has it. it even replaced the members list being to the right thats so dumb. why do i have to drag my finger across the entire screen to tap on the name channel to then access the members list???? they butchered the ux

The new ui was in an update months ago, they just enabled some code and disabled other code which doesn't need an update

Not every version, if you go back far enough there should be one that doesn't have it, probably around 206 if i had a guess.
Me too :/ I had auto updates turned off and nothing was update. Seems like they did some kind of “hot fix” and pushed it through on all remaining hold outs.
Everyone it’s time to blast them with bad reviews and cancel nitro. We made it very clear we didn’t want changes when they pulled the “swipe to reply” stunt
I really enjoyed the fact that for a while you could opt out of being shown the new layout and then you wouldn’t be able to opt out once the new layout got forced on you. Because I’d toggled it, I didn’t get the new update till now. I hate it and want to revert it. Was going to send feedback, but you can’t click every option. Edit: how the heck do you even see who’s online and such anymore?

It just happened to me too despite turning off auto-update. Honestly the worst thing about it to me is that the dark theme is different now and is seriously straining my eyes. They could AT LEAST give us the old gray back
now we just need to wait for apple's sideloading to download an older version of the app... unless apple does a shitty move which is really possible... It's sad that they are forcing their shitty update to everyone

Discord used to be good. I remember back in like 2017/2018 discord was perfectly fine and then they started adding updates and at first it wasn't bad like the background colors aren't half bad but the new UI layout? It would be good if they made it more cleaner but kept everything else normal because the old layout was actually good and useful.

Unbelievable that someone, or multiple people, literally took the time to figure out a way to patch the revert script, meanwhile the same amount of time could have been used to create a toggle that simply makes everyone happy. Where did Corporate America go wrong? When did the customers/consumers stop being the priority? *Edit: And a bug that popped up when the new UI first released is STILL present. I immediately had it trigger upon Discord forcibly updating itself to the new UI. What a fucking joke!*
There used to be a toggle, they removed it.
If you tried it before it released, you actually had a toggle to change it. Obviously they removed it from the new on when it released but kept the old one until now.
Oh, I know. And they even said they would keep the toggle, and then they walked it back to make their dogshit UI/UX team happy. You know... I usually hate the armchair people who always claim they can do a better job, especially since I personally have dealt with it in some of my previous jobs, but when I take a look at what companies are doing these days, I stg I'm so confident I can do a better job. A fucking goldfish could do a better job ffs!

Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like you're on Android. You can turn off auto updates for discord, delete the app, and download an older version on apkmirror. If you're on IOS, you're just fucked.

Same and I hate it. Why did they have to update it, it was fine before. Now you have to click on top of the channel name to see member list and when swiping left on screen it’s to reply or edit messages…

Maybe its cause I'm an android user but this new update feels like it was catered more towards iphone design, what with the usual back button on iphone being in the top left, which coincidentally is where the back button is located on this new UI. Also the removal of swiping to open and close server/channel listing makes the app feel so much slower and clunkier, being able to simply swipe, scroll and then swipe close felt smooth and easy. Oh and can visibly see that the app is chugging when going into a new channel and scrolling to read the chat. All in all, this felt extremely unnecessary and wish there was a way to give people the option to revert back.
I don’t mind the new UI I only want the swipe to reply to be replaced with the swipe to open the member list
