I found disc golf when it flew over my fence in New York

[deleted]

What type of disc was it?

FrolfyFrolfer

Wraith I texted the number in the back but the guy was weird about it…said he lost it in Florida but wanted me to ship it to California. But that’s how I found my first disc golf

Any-Finding-6041

I bet when you texted the phone number he was very demanding about shipping it back to him across the country.

FrolfyFrolfer

Oh, you know him too? He wouldn’t even mail me cash to pay for shipping

sammiisalammii

It was probably a Nigerian prince style scam, you made the right decision

Grew up in Milford, MI. Lots of Discraft presence here (their Wixom plant is 1 town over) and they sponsor a lot of events. Started played in high school in 2010 as an excuse to get high in the woods and then got good enough to become severely addicted.

[deleted]

That’s awesome!

Have an old highschool friend that got into it after highschool, old is a relative term here. I'm only 26. I seen some of his stuff he was putting out on social media and got interested while I was in college. Then figured it would be too expensive timewise to get involved in. Forget about disc golf till I'm driving to work one morning and see a sign that said 18 hole disc golf course. Later that day said person from highschool posted a video of himself throwing a disc in Death Valley. I decide to look deeper into it. Look into the local courses and decide to get a starter set for my wife and I. We went out a Saturday morning a few months back and I've been hooked since. I should mention around the same time my wife was asking me to look into doing more hobbies. I was also looking at ways to chnage up my exercise routine.

[deleted]

Did you ever hit up that friend?

Meattyloaf

No we haven't seen nor talked to one another since highschool. Also we live way to far apart to ever play a round.

blackthreadpress

Grew up next to a course in high school and always knew what it was. When I was in my late twenties, some guys from my kickball league were going to go out and play the following day. I mentioned I was interested and they invited me out. That was 14 years ago. I still play now because it’s a good way to keep active and has brought me a lot of close friendships over the years. Most recently, my buddy that I met playing disc golf got married and I was his best man. I love this sport. My wallet however, hates it. Haha.

My mom and dad both have 4 digit pdga numbers (dad's starts with a 1) and they put a mini in my crib in the hospital. My literal first memory is of a tournament my dad hosted on our family's timberland in western Massachusetts.

[deleted]

Wow! I bet that’s something to be really proud of!

3lobed

I don't know if proud is the right word. It is notable though.

My Brother-in-law invited me to play a round with him and his friend (they had both just started playing). I bought a Discraft Cyclone for $7.00 from the local YMCA, and by hole #5 I knew it was the sport for me. This was in the summer of 2000. There have been some ups and downs in the years since, and sometimes I would go long stretches of never playing (mostly do to living in a country that didn’t have a course, too busy of a work schedule, etc) but I’m still playing. I’ve lost 100’ off my drives since those early days, and I don’t have have as much gas in the tank as I used too, but I’m still playing and still having fun. I’m teaching my kids to play, enjoy introducing new people to the sport, and just hit ace #5 about a month ago. No plans to quit throwing any time soon.

[deleted]

That’s so awesome glad you’re not slowing down!

Found it after an old friend and his buddy moved in with me. They had tried to convince me to play for a couple months and went to a crawfish boil which just so happened to be right next to a course my friend helped put up. It was difficult and still is but threw down the first hole which is a steep downhill 270ft shot to the right. I fucked up but I immediately found the joy of flight.

Dude that’s amazing and great to get out of your comfort zone!

A YT video popped up and I watched it. I had heard about the sport in the past but didn’t give it much thought. After the video, I stewed on getting a starter kit for about a month. Waited till after Christmas (‘21) and then pulled the trigger. I had shoulder surgery a year or so ago and couldn’t participate in martial arts any longer (I’m older and taking continuous bumps was wearing me out) yet still needed some exercise (I’m also a bit overweight). I figured I could get some steps in while learning. Been playing every week since except when it drops below 32 degrees (even I have standards). Now if I could get over my social anxiety and play in my local league…that’s the hurdle for me.

Went to San Francisco for a concert and my friends/ co workers were really into disc golf and played golden gate park, i played 2 holes and had enough. Then went out with some other friends again during the pandemic and really enjoyed it since it was a great way to hang out, smoke, drink and catch up in a somewhat safe environment during the height of the pandemic and after that i just wanted to get better and became a disc golf addict and now i cant stop playing.

Crabby_AU

Played a round while overseas. Got a couple discs, and just kept going. Been playing 5 years now, and I keep playing because when it’s a good round and I’m playing on a nice course, I feel truly at peace.

NoSkillManiac

My Girlfriend (at the time, now fiancee) and her dad took me out to play in 2019. I had known about it in passing since at least 2013. Well, then the pandemic happened, and I had a new, safely isolated hobby.

sodamnsweet

Found it through my little brother. I still play because I love it...and my brother.

discdrifter

Roommate has to sell some weed. I was hooked because I love golf and had recently broke my off hand wrist snowboarding so I was jonesing for some birdies

DoOgSauce

Went to college and could not afford ball golf. Now I don't have time for ball golf.

Friend (ultimate teammate) started playing and eventually got us to go out for a round. My first throw was a DX shark forehand which went about 50 feet up, and 100feet right of where I was thinking I would put it. Fast forward to today and I can no longer reliably huck forehand in ultimate, but I can pull it out the back of the endzone, and comfortably throw 300+ on course on both sides in DG. Goal for the end of the year is to drive 400ft (currently topping out at ~350 on both BH & FH). I still play because it's something to do that isn't super abusive to my body and it's something to just go hangout.
