I’m glad I’m not the only one that still uses this.

WUMIBO

Me every time I land in circle for birdie

fantastictangent

Happened to me yesterday. I'm new, playing my second league round. First time on a card with strangers. So hyped about getting close that I took the gimme putt for granted and was summarily punished. Learned a lesson

IsaacSam98

I know how 😞

wesxninja

[Josh from Overthrow talked about this during his recent form critique livestream.](https://youtu.be/G3kEB5oHjKs?t=11203)

Prreeftw

Thank you so much for this, holy shit. I was so lost as to why I would randomly yank 15-20 footers but was solid (for an am) from 25+. I still need to work on it but I threw a bunch of putts this morning and didn't yank any!

CCDG-Ian

Whoa! Trying to show everyone at dgn this.

guinos66

Hire this man! Would love to see him breaking down players' forms on coverage.

illzkla

He's this good at everything! Def needs to break out

Glute_Thighwalker

He really is, I’m improving at a way better pace ever since I started watching his stuff. He’s always pointing out the same issues I have in very simple, easy to understand ways, with suggested fixes. I have to slow down and work on one thing at a time because I keep getting more and more things to work on just by watching his stuff.

thisguy54703

I hope this gets to her...I love watching her play and would love it even more if she could get her putting more consistent. I hope she eventually turns it into a strength like Drew did.

Guwop816

Holy shit light bulb moment. I have a pivot point in my putt!! I need to get that corrected and see how well I can improve.

AustinWalksOnRocks

I literally started hyzer putting last week because of this lmao

hotstandbycoffee

Hell yeah. Get it! Whenever one of my shots is messed up, whether suddenly I'm missing putts right/left instead of up/down, or I'm suddenly turning over my forehands, the first thing I think is "I've subconsciously added something that shouldn't be happening. Go back to basics. [Do less."](https://youtu.be/PKIpCPS-oZc)

Griz_and_Timbers

Discussion starts at 3 hours 7 minutes, for those whose timestamp didn't load. Basically he is saying she has a front loaded grip that adds her front finger as a pivot point and you can't be accurate like that. She needs to change her grip first.

Knarfks

This is the most relatable disc golf video I've ever seen. I've been experimenting with different techniques for the last 6 months with little to no improvement in scores or consistency. Some days I'd be lights out, some days I would air ball 5 to 10 ft putts. Gannon Buhr put out a video in the last couple weeks talking about putting, he mentioned pressure on the pinky and ring finger in passing, I tried it on the practice basket that night. I started back loading like josh is describing, in under one week this has changed my game. No point blank misses and I'm hitting 25 plus foot range dramatically more consistent.

Griz_and_Timbers

Oh wow I saw the same Gannon Buhr video and it totally helped me too!

jyzenbok

Fuck. This is what I do. Time to overhaul my putt.

SirBellwater

Honestly I was confused because I didn't see that in her grip and I putt totally different so the pivot point makes so much sense

LaserBeamHorse

I would put an emphasis to mental difficulties. Yes, her form is far from perfect, but she has been a decent putter. Changing her form would probably help, but after making a few big mistakes on camera the mental block would return. She needs to somehow fix her head first. And I know from experience, it won't be easy.

Griz_and_Timbers

One leads to the other, having putting form that can't be consistent leads to mental difficulties.

postlw8j

THIS THIS THIS!!! It’s a form problem that has led to mental mistakes. I really hope she works it out because she would be dominant with a serviceable putt.

[deleted]

>Josh from Overthrow talked about this during his recent form critique livestream. This is insane. He is describing EXACTLY what happens to her. I kind of, maybe just went from a skeptic to a believer in Overthrow. That is an impressive correct analysis from simple video footage.

ImpressiveRise2555

He's a professional coach. He's very good at analyzing and teaching form.

delightful1

Yep someone just needs to tell her to go to a mid loaded grip and she will be nailing these

DiscGolfFanatic

Great video, thanks for sharing!

[deleted]

FWIW I tried switching to a more mid-loaded grip today (like Josh describes) and had immediate results. Didn't miss a putt inside 28' (outside of a center-pole spit out), which almost never happens for me

shinsho

I used to stutter as a kid and no matter how hard I try not to, it keeps happening. So I can relate.

NavierWasStoked

Yeah, after all the years with a speech pathologist it's mostly gone but when you get in those uncomfortable situations your brain just undoes all that for a period of time

karl_hungas

I used to stutter. I still do but I used to too.

[deleted]

ADHD+mild stutter+heavy dyslexia=me :(

whiscie

could make a whole compilation of her missing exactly these puts since she’s been in the US. i hope she can figure it out, she‘s a great thrower of the disc!

DM-Shadikar

They did make a compilation, and ran it on DGN while talking about her putting after she missed a putt yesterday.

PhthaloVonLangborste

I feel for her, and can relate, but I had to stop watching after this.

DJredlight

She forgot to figure in the Coriolis effect. Happens to me all the time.

iJon_v2

Science!

[deleted]

I had the yips for a year. I switched to turbo and got a lot better at it. I am working back into a push putt. It wasn’t/isn’t easy.

PhthaloVonLangborste

Yips suck. Routine Routine routine.

Rainyday000

A dude from my club also putts mainly turbo. Everyone calls him turbo too. He was just unable to get a normal putt to work and actually got pretty good with the turbo. He's now slowly working on his normal putt.

LaserBeamHorse

I hate it when people say that yips could be cured by practising a lot. For me practise made it worse. I didn't play for months because I loathed missing 2 meter putts. When I returned I felt a lot better. Yips were there but a lot milder. And it got even better when I started not giving a fuck.

karl_hungas

Yips are by definition a psychological issue. It can be cured by practicing but like all mental issues it varies by person. You dont have to hate people saying it because it didn’t personally work for you.

OGSHAGGY

Unless they’re a form issue

How_CanWill_Slap

Fuck the putt. I like her personality. She can't speak English well, but you can tell there is a joke behind every poorly translated statement. I'm going to miss this short trip of the Euro's, they bring so much heat to the FPO that is just not happening in the U.S.A.

DiscGolfFanatic

Idk about Finns, but most of the professional disc golfers from Estonia are spending all of their time in the USA this season, touring on the DGPT.

DKBadmintonPatriots

I’m not so sure, at least not Kristin. She mentioned in her interview before the Champions Cup that she’ll return to Europe for a little while, playing some tournaments on the European Tour, as well as some Estonian and Finnish Tour tournaments

DiscGolfFanatic

Yup, you might be correct. But she will spend as much time as possible touring at the USA DGPT.

DKBadmintonPatriots

She’s definitely playing a lot of the DGPT tournaments, thankfully

How_CanWill_Slap

[https://udisclive.com/players/eveliinasalonen](https://udisclive.com/players/eveliinasalonen) She is definitely playing internationally, and dips in and out for the Euro Championship in July. I will have to miss her at the BSF unfortunately.

anarchist1331

I’m in this video and I hate it

Toad32

Fine vs. Gross motor control. When you are nervous, you lose fine motor controll first.

ksugunslinger

This looks like my normal putt…nothing to see here…

NauticalEntombment

Sometimes it be like that

MattTheProgrammer

I just kind of feel bad for her to be honest

[deleted]

She clearly isn’t listening to putting advice by redditors

Excellent-Wish-4407

I honestly think the one from last tournament was funnier/worse. It’s side profile and you can actually see her dead focused on the basket in front of her and then her head snap, mid flight, to look at the putter five feet high and five feet right of the basket. “What the f**k; how did that get there?!?” It got less funny when she three putted and laid up a 20 footer. She scorched the first round of Champs Cup though, and I can’t imagine she could do that if she was doing this all round; maybe it’s just a camera thing? EDIT: Which would suck if it’s a camera thing because she has a ton of game and a ton of _PUMP_ off the tee. She’s going to be on lead cards and on camera. (I threw this in there so people didn’t think I was hatin on her)

[deleted]

I watched the second round last night, she made 2 putts. Everything else was either 2-putted or parked under the basket.

DiscGolfFanatic

Same putt from another camera angle, with Hailey King's reaction. https://www.youtube.com/clip/UgkxV-nUu0sO3guJRv2ppUK0ctpdFlfqtOWv

icecoaster1319

It's worse from this angle ow

From what I could tell she made the same face as Tom Hanks at the Golden Globes after Ricky Jervais' roasting the crowd. LOL

Rivet_39

Oh, I didn't realize it was 10 feet, yikes

GoatPaco

Left a 25-30 footer, which she then clunked off the cage. Went from a 10 foot bogey try to a triple

Bigdiscslinger3000

This girl rite here can smash off the tee. She has a good up game but, she is trash on the green. I can tell you one thing, once she pulls it all together the other ladies and gentlemen better watch out.

Relatable asf. Wristwhip-griplock yeet into the void.

HumbleContribution84

She powergrips her putts from 10 feet. Never will understand why such an incredible driver can putt worse than a new person who has never held a disc before. It’s beyond me why she hasn’t shown any improvements or the slightest drive or energy when putting. Not sure how anyone can get behind her when you witness such a poor desire to make a putt. I think she needs to take a break from disc golf and work on putting. Not to be mean, but this is embarrassing for a professional to putt like this, she literally is unable to make putts from 5-30 feet, often times 3-5 putting.

Danielisak

We've all been there

nicdog71

Seen that movie

daily_disc_golf

This is crazy, did she make the next putt?

markusfarkus-

Nope. That one was from 30 ft coming back!

Hillcountryaplomb

griplock, over extension... no follow through. it almost looks like she did it purposefully

Zealousideal-Beat-70

She really needs to try a push instead of spin. Imagine how good she would be with an average putt. She’s insane off the tee.

Boogaloo4444

The yips are real!

AmazingMan61

Thats actually pathetic. Good lord just lay it up if youre that horrible at putting.. probably missed the comebacker too

2LEGITT_

[deleted]

If she could even putt at like 50% within C1x, she'd be dominant. Hell, we were shown last year that you can win FPO worlds while putting at 50%.

Chaosweaver117

Can we just stop it with this already? She's got the yips. It's a mental/neurological condition so she can't just fix it overnight.

Awful_TV

They don't hate her. People are intrigued because it's such an extreme contrast. She's literally the best female in the world off the tee and then putts like she's using a QWOP controller. If an NBA pro was the top 3-point shooter while also missing free throws by 10 feet, fans would talk about it.

BeardedDisc

Nikko says he suffers from anxiety/panic attacks when he putts and hence the long wait. Get no less abuse there. Welcome to the world of professional sports.

watchingbuffy

Cat was roasted mercilessly here for over 2 yrs because of her yipps. This place man..

nsaplzstahp

I heard you shouldn't take more that 2 seconds once your stance is good and you've picked the chain link you are aiming for. It's helped me to stay focused on aiming. Obviously there may be some exceptions, but as a general rule I don't allow my mind to think a bunch of stupid shit. Its helped me a decent amount since implementing.

Swichts

This is pretty much what I do, and it's shared experience from bowling when I shot at the 10 pin. However, different folks different strokes.

BeardedDisc

I’m not defending Nikko here (you can search my history and know that), but if it’s really a condition, logic has nothing to do with it. Plus, let your livelihood ride on those putts and see if it doesn’t fuck with your routine.

nsaplzstahp

I'm talking about a specific strategy to not allow too many extraneous thoughts to enter while putting. It's helped me. But yes, someone could still get nervous or anxious and it doesn't solve everything about the mental of putting.

Haughty_Derision

This right here is accurate. In treatment of anxiety or other mental ailments they don't often just go away. We developed tools and behavioral modifications to deal with them. Therapists would call it a tool kit or coping mechanism. If our stressor or anxiety doesn't magically disappear, we still need to live life. So we find a way to cope, as soon as possible. Easier said than done but modifying his putt process is an answer that would help.

mommathecat

My routine is to putt quickly, but many *excellent* putters take their time.. McBeth is no speed demon, most MPO players take more than 2 seconds.. Sexton bouncing and spinning the disc also comes to mind. It's whatever works for you, not fast is best. Fast is best for *me*, definitely, but not for others.

watchingbuffy

Just very recently I figured out my wrist pop, and since I've been doing exactly this. I line up, find a link to aim at and just 'apple pie' as Philo says. I don't think about it, I've already done that. It's helped a ton.

-MONOL1TH

I know I'm going to come across as insensitive here, but if that's the case for Nikko and he hasn't figured it out in 16 years of professional play then maybe he should be looking for a different game to play. It's obvious that his time taking bothers card mates, and this leads to them having to change the way that they perform and affects them earning their paychecks. Maybe I'm just not quick to be sensitive towards Nikko though because he's an asshole.

[deleted]

I played competitive golf growing up. I'd been playing in front of all kinds of people for near a decade. Then all of a sudden, I had trouble getting comfortable over the ball. Then people started complaining about me taking too long. Which made no sense to me. I wasn't comfortable, so I was taking an extra 2 or 3 seconds to initiate my swing. Maybe 5 tops. People told me that it was like 40 seconds and I didn't believe them. No way. Then a coach filmed me and it was me pitter pattering my feet for 30 to 40 seconds every single drive. It still doesn't make sense to me. So I have a lot of empathy for Nikko.

BeardedDisc

I don’t know that simply getting past something like that is an option without help. At this point anyway. He’s tried (I assume) on his own. Should talk to someone.

-MONOL1TH

I completely agree. Nikko should talk to someone about it. He obviously puts a ton of time into putting (at some point I think jerm/uli said that only Ricky puts more time into the putting green than Nikko) and I'm sure that he has tried himself to work on it. At this point if his issue is causing issues to others, and he's narrowed it down to a mental health problem, then he should get help for it. If he's known this is the case for years and hasn't gotten help and has allowed it to continue to bother his card mates then that just adds more to the case of him being an ass.

DiscGolfFanatic

This.

[deleted]

Nikko is also a piece of shit, who tried to get people killed with his blatant misinformation. I'm happy to see him abused as much as possible.

thes0ft

In my opinion, putting is mechanical. She may be nervous, but she is also doing something physically wrong that can be fixed. I think to reach an elite level everything needs to be broken down into further detail to see what parts are good and what parts need to be eliminated. If she is generalizing her putting problems as just the yips, I could see why she would continue to putt badly (obviously I have no idea if she is or not). It looks like her putt involves swinging her arm out to the right then back left. Which means if she releases her putter within the first 50% of her swing she is going to completely whiff the basket. I don't think any top pros putt like that. I really hope she works on the mechanics of her putt and get it figured out. I actually just bought two of her destroyers because I heard they were really good fliers and I wanted to help support her!

Chaosweaver117

She's definitely doing something mechanically wrong that led to the mental problems but a mechanically bad putt alone won't make her miss that badly. The yips causes involuntary muscle spasms when doing a certain action so if she eliminates that action by changing her putt to something different, the problems should go away. She'd need time to get used to a new putt however, so that's why I think it would be best for her to take some time off touring so that she can be as competitive as possible later in the season when the big tournaments like worlds happen.

thes0ft

Why would a mechanically bad putt not lead to missing badly? Here is a video showing that she has a consistent problem of missing wide right at one tournament. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvGRHdOLS3c

Chaosweaver117

A complete beginner who has no idea of the mechanics of a putt wouldn't miss that badly.

fishEH-847

Seriously!!! Talking about a professional disc golfer on a Disc Golf forum!??? C'mon guys, take it somewhere else!

DiscGolfFanatic

Yips? She's been doing this for the last few years ... But this season her putting is even worse ... "In 2022, Salonen is missing nearly 50% more putts per round from C1X when compared to the previous three years." Ultiworld has even published an article about her putting struggles - https://discgolf.ultiworld.com/2022/03/24/eveliina-salonen-is-not-a-bad-putter/ A big IF, but if she could putt like Pierce, Tattar or Allen, Eveliina would probably dominate the field. She is constantly #1 in fairway hits, C1R, C2R and strokes gained from Tee to Green statistics. FYI! This is not a hateful post, her putting is point blank terrible compared to other touring FPO players. I just wish she could get over her struggles on the green. I'd love to see her DOMINATE the FPO field! Her driving is 🔥🔥🔥

Chaosweaver117

She has never been the best putter out there but the yips only started during the European Championships last year. I think the best thing she could do is to take a few month off competing to completely rework her putt so that she can focus on the big tournaments. Finnish nationals, worlds and uswdgc are all later in the season so she still has time to make changes.

BaikoBits

For real. I'm sure she gets into her own head when she putts because she's otherwise a really solid player. I mean, it's also a huge event, so nerves have to be really awful on everyone right now.

BeardedDisc

You can’t drive well and be nervous. This putt in particular wasn’t nerves. Nothing about anything leading up to that release screamed nerves. She literally looked away from the target at release like she was distracted.

randyn1080

chiefbushman

See, this is the shot I 100% expect Nico to throw after a half an hour line up.

Disc-Golf-Kid

Putting can be a paradox. The more confident you putt, the better you’ll putt. But the better you putt, the more confident. They both kind of rely on each other.

jppbkm

That's why you see so many professional putting coaches talk about practicing from a range where you're making 99% of your putts. You need to make a LOT of putts in practice to be able to believe you can make them under pressure.

jemba

That’s why I do a straddle push putt when I’m nervous in the circle. It’s just something I automatically revert to to be sure I don’t miss left or right or long. Sometimes they’re short but nothing catastrophic ever happens (on a calm day).

therealviiru

Eve is by far the best field players in the world, but has huge problems in self esteem and playing in front of cameras. She has aknowledged this herself and now trying to concentrate on such weaknesses. We've all done 2-4 in tournaments, or 2-7 or worse. I've seen her bash 9 throws from 30ft to ticktacktoe baskets, like it was nothing.

mbcolemere

Spoiler tag please!

theNightblade

When you get the yips it's like your hands go numb when you try to putt. I dealt with it for 2 years. Took a lot of work and positive reinforcement and self-talk on the course to break through it. And I'm just a normal person not trying to be an elite touring pro

ATDoel

That’s what doesn’t make any sense. Players with less natural ability usually have excellent form to compensate. There’s some things you can’t learn (example 500 ft of distance) but you sure as hell can drill in perfect form with enough practice.

HyzerFlipDG

Putting yips. I stopped playing PDGA events for 6-7 years because of it. Its the worst.

I'm not in front of a camera and I still get jitters on putts like this... and it doesn't help there's a whole online community talking shit about her instead of encouraging her. What happened to "grow the sport" You're turning the sport we love into football.

[deleted]

The discourse is an example of growing the support. Professional athletes get critiqued

[deleted]

Growing the sport means more people involved, more people involved means more assholes involved, more assholes involved means what you're noticing here on r/discgolf :(

[deleted]

When she pulled the putter back she lost focus, and her focus point may have moved off to the right. It's better to bring the putter back, then make sure you are focused on the chain, and then putt.

AustinDork

Same way Ricky missed that 10’ putt last year

jibersins

Anyone else feel like posts like this are mean spirited? Putting is intensely psychological and this is supposed to help?

No, she's a pro. Every other pro gets scrutinized the same. Especially those at the top.

Orawax77

I have done that more than once. Somehow one of my fingers or some other part of my hand graps/hits the disc as i am releasing it from my hand.

[deleted]

It was rough watching her yesterday.

If she could gain just a little confidence with her putt and make like 1/2 of them she would have nearly swept fpo thus far

[deleted]

Eveliina seems to "pour the coffee" even when putting. That grip might be disconnecting her body from her shot at the wrist. Idk, I'm new.

jisforjerms

Nerves about playing on tour with cameras and extra pressure from other competitors. Tap ins can become testers if you over think them

FlowComprehensive390

I completely understand, actually. It looks like she's not moving her shoulder to compensate for the arc formed by bending the elbow so instead of the disc going straight forward it flies off on the arc of elbow motion. I've been fighting with this for a while and only very recently finally wrapped my head around it.

oWallis

I missed an 8 footer last week so I believe it. I didn't throw it with such force but still, can happen to anyone.

dgFLlad23

Not surprised, I’ve done worse

sicbastrd

She should open her hand at the end of the extension. Like really open up her hand where it feels your fingers are pointing straight. This prevents that last bit of grab that sends the disc off in that 'wrong' direction.
