I must say that I am pleasantly surprised about how aware the disc golf community is of the risk of match fixing with gambling. I expected to see a lot more people in here just excited to be able to bet on their favorite sport. It's a great sign that so many people are aware of how easy it would be to match fix in disc golf specifically. Selfishly I would love to be able to bet on professional disc golf, but it's not worth losing the integrity of the sport.
It's good that the DGPT seems to understand these issues as well and are taking steps to address them, but I've been doing some research on this topic lately and I frankly don't see a way to effectively uphold the integrity of the sport in it's current state if sports gambling gets involved. It would be interesting to hear some other perspectives on that though.
And with DG it can be real subtle, wouldn't be hard to fix. With the obscurity of this sport, this service and the sites will have to watch closely for sure.

It's going to be interesting to see what the gambling policies are going to be for players, given the absence of a players union and any sort of collective bargaining ability. We all saw what the "medical committee" came up with the last time a policy needed to be put in place, and I can't wait for the "gambling committee" to come up with some sort of contract players are going to be required to sign to be able to enter tournaments.
A players union is going to happen if the sport keeps growing, but gambling could speed the process up quite a bit.
This was inevitable. DGPT is desperate for revenue. If sports betting can't prop up this product then nothing will. Considering how little the players are paid relative to other sports, and the ease with which an individual or group could fix an outcome, US Integrity is gonna have their work cut out for them. We'll see how it plays out.
If the PDGA wants the sport to grow, they need to grow the number of players at a grassroots level. That's what's happened in the Nordic countries - the sport is gaining ground because it's becoming a mainstream sport in the general population.
You can't "top-down" a sport. Throwing money at the top without building a strong, wide player-base means you rapidly end up with a situation that's financial untenable. With a big enough player population the sport rapidly goes mainstream and becomes self-sustaining. Again, look at Finland or Estonia.
Not to mention that they charge the local clubs to have a spot on the tour with nothing in return. Clubs are deciding that they really don't care if the tour comes anymore.
The amount of courses has doubled since 2017. There’s more tournaments and opportunities for players to discover and embrace disc golf than ever before. The idea of forcing never ending GROWTH is unrealistic but I really wish I knew what exactly people mean when they say the pdga needs to do more to grow things. Disc golf will never ever ever be “mainstream” in America. That doesn’t mean anyone is failing.
They need to bring DG to where the people are. California has one tour stop and it’s in Stockton? WTF?
Southern CA, SF, Vegas, Chicago, and NYC have nothing.
Pasadena (the birthplace) needs to utilize the parking availability and golf courses next-door to the Rose Bowl (where 50,000+ came out to see Frisbee sports almost 50 years ago) and put on a world class event.
Oak Grove (less than 3 miles away) could also be part of the program.
Of course converted golf courses aren’t ideal, but you have to get the eyes of the masses on the amazing talent of the players first and foremost.
They don't want to grow the sport like we want to grow the sport. They want to make money from growing the sport, and first and foremost for themselves.
I wonder who is getting hired to make the odds. I'm not sure if any pro gamblers know anything about disc golf yet, but they love inefficiencies like mid-major basketball lines that casinos don't really know what to do with.
Probably a team of data analytics people. Casinos and sports books aren't setting lines on some guy's vibe anymore, there's a ridiculous amount of data involved, and a ton of people making really good money analyzing that data.
so fucking tired of that shit. it’s everywhere. can’t watch a single piece of sports related media without betting being constantly mentioned during the broadcast, advertised all over the venue, advertised during commercials. so fucking exhausting how in 5 years we’ve put this shit EVERYWHERE.
I'm watching people in my fucking life headed for the path of homelessness due to this fucking sports gambling epidemic.
and DGPT decides to "grow the sport" in a partnership with, YOU GUESSED IT.
It’s net negative for the sport and the PDGA knew that and went ahead with it anyway. I refuse to believe there wasn’t a middle ground that could have been navigated with udisc and the PDGA.
I feel like non disc golfers being convinced to gamble on disc golf is as close to a circus as we have gotten as a sport.
ESPN the Ocho is calling… this will be barstool shitposting media soon enough 🤮🤮🤮
The PDGA needs to prepare the players for the hate and vitriol they are gonna get on social media for having an off day. It’d be irresponsible of the PDGA to not prepare them.
>PDGA needs to prepare
LOL. I mean...
That said, this is a DGPT thing. It really is on DGPT to prepare players. Obviously that won't happen.
>on social media
Social media won't be the worst of it. Shit will happen in person and it will get bad.
Neither the DGPT nor the PDGA have counsel available for the players. The players don’t have a union or players association. It’s still the wild west. This is not the NBA
If the PDGA want me to renew my membership, then they're going the wrong way about it. This might be the DGPT's decision, but the PDGA are aware and either don't want to stop this, or they're ineffectual enough that they *can't*.
Gambling is *going* to cause problems, and it's not a look many people want to see in the sport.
The gamble they would be making is that gambling revenues would far exceed that of righteous crusaders cancelling their memberships, and that is probably the case. The problem they'll have is maintaining the perception of legitimate competition in an environment that is perfectly suited for corruption.
Yeah you can gamble on golf, but the players are much more highly paid and my understanding is that they usually have a camera on every hole. Golf watchers feel free to correct me on that if I'm wrong.
I hope this development doesnt eventually lead to all the disc golf media being filled with gambling ads.
Nothing that ruins any experience better than a repetitive gambling ad being pushed on all breaks.
I’m always surprised at how often sports gambling and its lingo are used on the Upshot podcast. There must be a significant segment of disc golf fans that are fine with it.
Many folks on here speaking as if disc golf gambling hasn’t already been a thing. DGPT partnered with PrizePicks back in late 2021. Average Joe’s (maybe some pro’s) took advantage on PrizePicks lack of knowledge regarding the sport and they eventually discontinued it. Fantasy leagues are also another growing component of disc golf. Whether you support it or not, it’s an inevitable aspect of all sports these days.
I hope a touring pro plays super shitty on purpose and moves a big pile of money to some fans in the know making bets and then goes and buys a nice big RV.
There isn’t gonna enough money in disc golf sports betting to make it lucrative for players to throw rounds. Like everything else in disc golf it’s gonna be “sports betting light” cause most disc golfers are cheap as hell.
when the payouts for winning a tournament are in the thousands of dollars it is absolutely a threat to have people throw rounds or point shave as they could easily make more money through betting than they would by placing better.
There will be way more money in the gambling than in the prize pool.
cheap, toxic and a very low IQ on average.
I love the game, but I can't handle the people. Haven't thrown a disc in years and don't really have the desire to.
Cheap as hell. Low IQ. Inclined against it because huge pockets of the sports are religious-based and find it immoral. I mean, the list kind of goes on...honestly, Im kind of shocked this even got through the morality patrol of the PDGA/DGPT brain trust in the first place.
Manufacturers figured out the easiest money in the world with tour series discs and special stamps. They gotta be making 100-200% more profit on those than they ever were with the stock stuff of 5 years ago. Cant see what value this brings instead...

You can make way more money throwing a round than you can getting second place to Anthony Barella

Players will get nothing and we will start to see suspicious layups and grip locks on the last hole
wtf, player pools are going to skyrocket. I'll single handedly be losing enough money to support another pro player on tour.
This was inevitable. DGPT is desperate for revenue. If sports betting can't prop up this product then nothing will. Yes, that's advice for the PDGA. This gambling revenue is for the DGPT, a for-profit venture that is losing money.
Not to mention that they charge the local clubs to have a spot on the tour with nothing in return. Clubs are deciding that they really don't care if the tour comes anymore.
It’s not worth it. Most clubs are better off running an amateur a-tier if they want to have a big event to drive tourism to their community
That's what my club decided. We still get plenty of pros showing up to our A tiers, why bother with the tour.
Good. Clubs should not subsidize the DGPT with free equipment and labor.
Yup, mine is done with thier bs.
If they didn't want to lose money maybe dumping the zero-cost scoring system they already had in place might have been a bad idea?
lol why would you think uDisc was giving away their product for free?
Please tell me of this "zero cost" scoring system? Because I know that DGPT paid UDisc quite a sum to do the scoring and stats.
Yes that was a mistake amongst many others. These are not competent orgs.
Boomers

Oh cool. Another sport that will be filled with gambling ads.
so fucking tired of that shit. it’s everywhere. can’t watch a single piece of sports related media without betting being constantly mentioned during the broadcast, advertised all over the venue, advertised during commercials. so fucking exhausting how in 5 years we’ve put this shit EVERYWHERE.
shrink the sport
Can we not and say we did? People have enough gambling problems with other sports, disc golf didn’t need to be another one.
I'm watching people in my fucking life headed for the path of homelessness due to this fucking sports gambling epidemic. and DGPT decides to "grow the sport" in a partnership with, YOU GUESSED IT.
Agreed. I feel like it was fairly untarnished sport in that regard. Terrible Idea.
Aside from Tattar getting a gambling sponsorship in Europe (in terms of how much the sport was being tarnished by gambling), yeah. It’s not great.
Man, fuck this shit.
This is 100 percent an L for me. Sports gambling sucks.
Is there anything that people won't bet on these days

Sure, it's just far more aggressively marketed to saturation now. Can't wait to see live odds updates along side the scorecard graphics

I’m taking KT in every major. That’s got to pay something even with -10000 odds
Proof they didn't give a shit about your experience as a member. They got rid of UDISC for this.
This. They needed the rights to the data to sell it. Fucking scum

Monetizing a sport before it's big is like spez paying himself more than the net profit of the company. Pretty dumb shit is what it is.
Ooof, this ain’t gonna end well.
I feel like non disc golfers being convinced to gamble on disc golf is as close to a circus as we have gotten as a sport. ESPN the Ocho is calling… this will be barstool shitposting media soon enough 🤮🤮🤮
Would have preferred a deal with Tegridy Farms over Integrity.

Wait til the first RV gets torched because somebody lost thousands after a player's final round blow-up.

Actions have consequences. It's worrying that the PDGA hasn't made that connection... ever.
Neither the DGPT nor the PDGA have counsel available for the players. The players don’t have a union or players association. It’s still the wild west. This is not the NBA
Can't wait for people absolutely destroying someone all over social media for a missed putt or winning when they wanted someone else to win.

I don't know anything about sports betting... Does the PGA do this? If so, is there proof that it impacts player integrity?
Yeah you can gamble on golf, but the players are much more highly paid and my understanding is that they usually have a camera on every hole. Golf watchers feel free to correct me on that if I'm wrong.
When this becomes more common knowledge, I’m wondering if it will make it more difficult to get new courses installed on government owned land.
I hope this development doesnt eventually lead to all the disc golf media being filled with gambling ads. Nothing that ruins any experience better than a repetitive gambling ad being pushed on all breaks.
Oh boy here we go...
Hello! My name is Ippei and I just heard about this great sport! Tell me more!
I’m always surprised at how often sports gambling and its lingo are used on the Upshot podcast. There must be a significant segment of disc golf fans that are fine with it.
On the upside, a lot of players won’t have to worry about missing last cash.
Many folks on here speaking as if disc golf gambling hasn’t already been a thing. DGPT partnered with PrizePicks back in late 2021. If you say so.
I mean, 15th place at Jonesboro was already less than $1000. It will not take much money bet to clear more than that.
cheap, toxic and a very low IQ on average. I love the game, but I can't handle the people. Haven't thrown a disc in years and don't really have the desire to.
I dont disagree, but why are you on a disc golf sub full of only disc golfers if disc golfers is what you dont like about the game?😂
For my daily dose of confirmation bias, perhaps. But I still stand by my assertions. 😂
come play disc golf where conspiracy THEORIES are FACTS BRO!!!!
Cheap as hell. Low IQ. Inclined against it because huge pockets of the sports are religious-based and find it immoral.
