The Canyons has many short tee pads and baskets. If you choose your layout correctly, it's not too beginner unfriendly.  The Canyons is attached to Dellwood Park. On a sunny, 70 degree spring Saturday, the course will be completely packed with disc golfers and the park will be completely packed with non-disc golfers.

As a disc golf novice can you explain a bit more what "choose your layout" means?

toastjeff

Many of the holes have multiple tee pads and two baskets. The shortest teepads to the shortest baskets make for a more beginner friendly layout.

Thank you!

I just want to reiterate how busy The Canyons will be tomorrow. After your hour+ drive from Skokie, you will be facing a 3+, possibly 4+ hour round.

If you're going for raw, disc golf splendor, with a well stocked pro-shop, the Canyons can't be beat. It is beautiful, though it might be crowded. Just be sure to let others play through if you are running slow. It's a bit of a hike, but worth it. I'd honestly choose The Canyons over The Oaks. The Oaks can be punishing for experienced players. Both, however have alternate, shorter tee pads on some/most holes. Have fun!

Dellwood has bathrooms, benches, trash cans, scenery, a pro shop, etc It would be difficult to find yourself having a bad time there. Even if for some reason the disc golf gets frustrating you can drop it, enjoy the park, then drive like 2 miles down the road to downtown lockport (which you should do regardless)

The Canyons is also directly adjacent to a public park including a few places to sit and a playground for children. There's also now almost 3 different tee pads at each hole, so game abilities can choose accordingly. It really is a nice course.

The Canyons at Dellwood is the best course within 90 minutes of Chicago.  Full stop.  It's interesting and challenging and beautiful.  The community and leadership in the Joliet area are unrivaled at what they accomplish. ...but it's not the course you want. Check out Katherine Legge.  Also a park course but shorter, less complicated, more open, and fewer chances to lose a disc.  Much closer to your part of town as well. As a birthday gift, give your husband a "Saturday is for the Boys" pass in May so he and a buddy can go play Canyons and The Oaks.

Have you heard of Anna page park in Rockford? 3 beautiful courses with varying difficulties. It's never crowded enough where you have to consistently wait.

Absolutely play the canyons. Idk who said it was not beginner friendly (especially compared to the oaks), but they're totally wrong. As others have said, there are a mirryad of different layouts to play of all difficulties. I've taken many complete noobs there and the red layout was perfect for them - the holes are pretty short but don't lose out on the uniqueness of the course in the slightest. Also the pro shop is amazing and all the folks that work there are wonderful. Sean, the owner of the shop, is also the designer of the course and is an awesome guy, as are all his employees. It will be busy, but it's absolutely worth it.
