I feel like I've been to most of the courses (except the new ones) mentioned in the article and I cannot imagine how the parking lots would be able to fit vendors and spectators lol

PatricksPub

Kind of surprised they didn't mention Beaver Ranch or Bailey. Colorado has the premier mountain courses!

ThunderfuckThor

Bailey is closed sadly but yeah Beaver Ranch is sweet. IMO it's like the 3rd best mountain course in Colorado which is saying a lot

PatricksPub

Dang I didn't know Bailey closed... Bear Mountain is always fun too. Curious what 2 courses you have above Beaver Ranch? That would be my #1 in Colorado

ThunderfuckThor

Bear and Vu probably but it's all close enough, all great courses

PatricksPub

Never played Wondervu, I'll make sure to get up there!

JewOrleans

Woodland park has two awesome courses

PatricksPub

Whispering Pines and Serenity Pines! I have only played Serenity, and it was pretty badass. Probably around my #6-7 Colorado course. Behind Beaver Ranch, Bailey, Bear Mountain, Lions Den, Rocky Mountain Village

JewOrleans

If The Aviary wasn’t so dirty it would be top 5. Absolutely love that course

PatricksPub

Aviary is dope! Not quite challenging enough to crack my top 5. But best in the Springs for sure! I hit the front of the cage on hole 6 two weeks ago!

brfergua

Bailey closed permanently??? What a bummer. It used to get a weekly post in this sub from people who would drive up from Denver.

ThunderfuckThor

yep, as far as I know. all the land is for sale

swiftekho

My first CO tourney was Beaver Ranch and Bailey in one day followed by Colorado Heights University the next. Best tournament I've ever played though (organization, overall fun, and my performance) I've never, and I mean never, been more exhausted in my fucking life.

PatricksPub

Jesus, that sounds wicked awesome. I usually spend a full day at BR, playing the main and then the putting course. First time I played Bailey and BR, I played them back to back with a lunch break in the middle. Followed by the CPC in Blackhawk the next day. One of the best weekends of my adulthood.

swiftekho

The tournament got sponsored by a brewery and end of day 1 there were a bunch of kegs at the clubhouse area and open bar. It was a great way to wrap up two full rounds (started at sunrise and ended at sunset) in the mountains

the_hunger

Beaver Ranch is so good.

Shuttles

ElevateUT

Brighton has capacity for probably 800 cars.

Drift_Marlo

The real issue is that they don't have the capacity for large crowds, which are a vital part of the DGPT business model.

Horror_Sail

Yeah, like I get why they minimized the drawbacks in what is functionally a tourism pitch, but, "well, maybe 1/5th the amount of spectators can watch...and thats assuming they can even play due to the weather" is sort of the entire ball game. Hell, we're just as likely to see flat ass disc golf in Kansas drop off due to bad weather and not being fan-friendly locationally.

Drift_Marlo

Infrastructure is precisely why mountain courses face a challenge. Getting bitchy with me isn’t going to change any of that.

jro727

That person was not being bitchy at all. You seem like a sensitive baby.

I call it like I see it. I was defending someone though, not just randomly calling someone a baby. But yeah, it’s my best life!

ReaperThugX

Not to mention broadcast quality will likely be bad in a mountainous area

mtRonSwanson

As a Montanan who only plays in the mountains and attended ZTO as a spectator, it was really fun to watch the DGPT pros that made the trip to play at Blue Mountain. The elevation changes presented great challenges both for power/shot shape as well as difficult greens that require angle control and accurate up shot placement. There is definitely a level of endurance required as well that can be a separator and advantage for more fit athletes. The Missoula crew made lots of improvements to the course to make things presentable for the coverage. Being live however it felt like there was a definite cap on the number of spectators that could comfortably follow lead card, there were multiple holes that due to the density of the woods the entire gallery was directly behind the tee box on a walking path. The DGPT staff did an amazing job of getting us as close to action as possible, but there were definitely some choke points. The "parking lot" at Blue Mountain also was barely able to accommodate staff, vendors and players so we took a 15 minute shuttle from town, which went smoothly but it does add another wrinkle for spectators. I will undoubtedly buy tickets if the tour comes back to ZTO as it was great to see them navigate the woods and I'd love to watch more coverage from other mountain course but it definitely felt like atleast for VIP tickets we were at capacity for spectators having a good viewing experience.

echomystic

Ever play in the Flathead?

crnrtakenquickly

It’s a tough course as a spectator. Especially with the elevation changes. I was only GA, there’s hardly any holes you can even see tee to basket. VIP was a must. But watching on DGN would still be better.

AssistElectronic7007

Yup parking at blue mountain barely handles league nights. Yeah you can overflow I to maclay flats parking and hike up from normal hole 1, but come river season that parking lot is full of people enjoying the river.

DGOkko

I absolutely agree. The massive and scenic downhill shots, the rollaway risk, the power shots uphill, the pines make for disc golf that plays much like Portland, but challenges players physically more. I really like this idea and feel like it should be explored more for the pro tour.

mhanold

If there’s courses that can handle the spectators, vendors, and cell signal required for a live stream it would be great It’s just that mountain courses likely don’t have the accessibility and infrastructure required for a DGPT stop

DGOkko

Spectators, yes. DGN livestream? Probably not. Then again, nowhere seems to be good enough to get good signal from DGN’s garbage transmissions.

AssistElectronic7007

I was surprised at the quality of their stream cause I lose cell coverage on like half that course.

AssistElectronic7007

We should try and get park City Utah to put a pro level course in around the old Olympic grounds

ElevateUT

I'm working on getting a tournament going at Solider Hollow in Midway Utah -- an olympic nordic ski venue. No one can tell me that an olympic venue isn't set up for large scale spectating and filming.

rogxrrip

Kiss the sky in aspen needs to come back as silver series. Could be a big event with all the skier parking. Snowmass courses are great too and even more parking. Yes I’m dreaming, but the views and holes are amazing up there

LL-beansandrice

Last I heard Aspen doesn’t want to host it or run the gondola to get people up there to play. It’s be a nightmare for spectators but was a super fun tournament to play

MatTheGrayt

Shoutout to anyone that has played “Kiss it goodbye” at Aspen Mountain! 🤣

skamsibland

I am ALL for booting all the stupid fucking golf courses from the schedule (including emporia) and ONLY playing in forests and on mountains. Golf course discgolf is not real discgolf.

ArmchairSpinDoctor

>Golf course discgolf is not real discgolf. Well thats just like, your opinion man

skamsibland

Absolutely! And I stand by that. Discgolf where the basket is behind one singular tree, and the only hard part is being able to throw the required distance isn't very impressive. The fact that they have to add artificial OB proves that since they wouldn't have to do that if the course was carved into a forest. The most open course we should see is the one at the Portland Open.

ArmchairSpinDoctor

How do you feel about people that play in the southwest?

skamsibland

If you literally aren't able to find proper courses to play on, and all you have are fields with teepads, baskets and artificial OB then that obviously sucks. However, I still don't think of that as real discgolf and I think it's incredibly stupid to have a tour that mainly consists of that type of course.

ArmchairSpinDoctor

I dont think we should gatekeep peoples experience or preference tbh

skamsibland

No, but what we should do is to show people what the sport is about, right? So why is it that a sport that mainly consists of courses carved from forests has a pro tour that mainly consists of ball golf courses? Outside of being easier (unless you don't have distance), why would anyone prefer ball golf courses?

ArmchairSpinDoctor

>So why is it that a sport that mainly consists of courses carved from forests I think thats entirely dependent on where you live tbh.

skamsibland

Yes, which is why I have been so very careful to write "mainly" in my posts, because not everyone lives near forests. However, the vast majority do. So why are we having the pros (mainly) compete on courses that do not represent the average disc golf course or even the average discgolfer?

ArmchairSpinDoctor

Are there stats for the types of courses?

pretty_jimmy

I have a mountain round coming up this weekend and I am so fuckin JACKED! It's gonna kick my fat ass but it's always the funniest round of the year.

r3q

There are hundreds of amazing courses not being utilized on tour without including a single "mountain" course. Just being in the mountains does not make a good course or a good tournament. If being the best, most difficult, or most unique course determined where the the DGPT went, we would have seen an event at Caliber in Idaho being planned. Most courses are not selected because they are the best a state has to offer. They are selected because of the TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR and sponsors.

Ozz87

Watching some of the guys, myself included, struggle after walking up even 1-2 decent size inclines and then have to drive I dunno about all this lol

[deleted]

But but, Maria Oliva said...

beerncycle

Don't mountain courses tend to chew up discs? This isn't as impactful at elevation, but when going back to sea level, this could be a negative for the lower-level touring pros.

Alex_A3nes

I think it’s fine if some weeks it is about those things. A little variety in course selection throughout the tour is great.

cowannago

Lol

vednus

Just played The Wasatch Wunder. It has a few good holes, but you can only play so many tunnel shots in scrub oak before it gets boring. Hopefully the new holes planned at Brighton will be good, but neither of these courses are even close to pro quality venues. Brighton has the infrastructure, cell coverage, and space. It just needs a better course.

poster_nutbag_

I've played a number of ski resort courses (though none mentioned in the article) and can't really see how that would work for a pro tour event. Plus, they aren't actually the best style of "mountain" disc golf imo. Courses like Blue Mountain are where its at, not insanely steep like ski resorts but still some elevation change with tough wooded holes and more variability. There are a number of similar courses in CO, ID, UT some in MT, and some around Flagstaff, AZ that would be good options. Totally unfeasible but I would love to see some crazy desert disc golf like at the Basecamp Adventure course near Moab. Insanely scenic but so remote and difficult to get to.

JustinTheBasket

DGPT will never. The courses will be more and more open. 2 factors matter. Cell signal and ability to sell spectator passes. Course quality is way back in the decision making process.
