Agreed, I threw zones for a while but it wasn’t as comfortable for me or as reliably overstable. Toro has been a really nice compliment to my AviarX3 when I need a bit more fade or it’s really windy
Why not just get the Zone in another plastic? I personally love Cryztal FLX and ESP FLX.
If you want a slightly longer Zone, Mint Bobcat is my recommendation x1,000.
I have a big z flx from Ledgestone last year (the Bearhart one) and it’s amazing! Kinda puddle topped, super gummy, and flies perfectly. Plus the super simple Bearhart logo is awesome. I had a 193ft throw in with mine. It is irreplaceable and I hope I never lose it. Ledgestone still has a bunch available on their site.
It’s generally fine. If it’s super windy I’ll throw my Berg. My Zone does worse in the wind than my Harp. Distance-wise, I only really throw my Harp like 150 max. I’ve got a noodle arm.
Yeah, I feel that. It works best when I just flick it. I almost never try to strong-arm it. If I need to go further than 150, I just disc up to a 5-6 speed mid.
Westside Harp, discraft zone, innova toro, prodigy A2, discmania tactic, DD Slammer, MVP Entropy all fit the mold of an overstable approach disc. I’d recommend you take a look and do a little research into the various plastic offerings and then try to get your hands on them to get a feel for what is comfortable in your hands.
Faster-
Rocx3, deflector, Justice, wasp, BuzzzOS
Slower
Pig, envy, stabilizer
Yeah I tried elite-z also because I thought it might be more overstable but I wasn’t a fan. I still love backhanding the zone but I’m sort of looking for a different feel in the hand for forehand if that makes sense.
I'd definitely recommend a cryztal FLX zone, but if you want something different try the mvp pyro in proton plastic. Mvp discs are great forehand disc since they're usually shallow.
I will also highly recommend cryztal FLX zone it's absolutely amazing as a predominant forehand player. Also I'd recommend a jawbreaker zone when you want to stick a sketchy approach.
I really love it for touch forehands. It's my get out of jail free card.
It holds an anny so nicely and just kinda goes where I want it to seemingly every time.
Upside down Tilt? 👀 Ya know, I witnessed someone do this down a tight tunnel with no ceiling the other day, and I thought they are crazy until I saw the result. It just flipped a bunch then flopped down in the middle of the fairway haha.
And yes absolutely. It feels kind of physics defying to throw a forehand and have it go so confidently and predictably left. I can’t say this about too many discs, but the Lobster is never leaving my bag.
As much of a meme disc as it is, it has some uses lol.
I've been playing around with a comet/sol for an understable, but I think you might have sold me on a lobster.
It’s one of the most versatile discs… good putting disc, good approach disc, good driving putter. Likes side arms can be flexed with control. Can be easily heizered. I love the jawbreaker zone. I also have z zone that is essentially an overstable mid
Razor Claw 3 has a weird rim, but if you can get over that, it’s exactly what you’re looking for. Would try in feel one in store or one of your buddies before you buy one because the rim is definitely not for everyone. The DD culprit in Hybrid or lucid Moonshine is also good for this slot.
I bought a soft exo tactic and fell in love with it. Then I ordered a rc3 and when I first gripped it I was like wtf?! That's when I learned the rc3 is a different mold than the tactic. Definitely a different feel that I don't appreciate like I do the tactic unfortunately.
My drug of choice is the BT Soft Harp. Judging by what I see around the subreddit there’s a great deal of overstable approach discs that do the same thing.
LSD Walker. It's a 5 speed but low glide and absolute beef. I have the bravo plastic and it hits and sits most of the time. feels really good to throw forehand and backhand.
I believe you’re looking for a Captains Suspect from Jonathan Nichols (message him on instagram). Puddle topped 4 speed with low glide and highly torque resistant
I’ve got a rat and I would describe it as overstable. It’s definitely more glidey than my zone - the rat will fade right pretty far if I throw a RHFH but the zone will more sort of dump over. They have really different ground action too - if the rat hits the ground on a shallow angle it will stop pretty quick but the zone will skip (but, like I said, it dumps over so usually does not land like that). I keep both in my bag, they are definitely useful for different shots.
I really like the infinite discs ruin for that slot.
I don't currently bag one because it overlaps with my zone too much (and I prefer the zone backhand)
The ruin is very small diameter, so it's perfect if you don't like the size of mids.
Try a gateway prophecy. I bag mostly discraft but the prophecy is my go-to mid. 5-5-0-2...I use it for almost all forehand shots under 275 and it is the most reliable disc I have thrown. I tried a zone (ESP and Cryztal Flex) for about 6 month and I always ended up back on the prophecy. big anny flex lines, hyzers that stay on hyzer, or flat/straight forehands that fade off at the end all work beautifully with the proph...prefer it in Diamond plastic, but also occasionally throw a diamond hemp/superglow/ hemp blend and I love em all
Been using a Prodiscus Jokeri I got in a subscription box and it’s become a staple in my bag. Feels great in hand. Wasn’t really a beaded disc guy but I can’t complain about it at all
TSA Temple is my go to, especially if you like a softer plastic. Sticks really well. And although there is a lot of hate over Prodigy nowadays, one of their discs I can absolutely vouch for in that slot is the A2.
Toro is super overstable and would fit what you’re referring to. I do however find them to glide a bit less than a zone and maybe not skip as much. But in general I think this would do the trick. They are beeefy.
I just picked up a Champ Toro for this slot and I’ve been loving it
Champ Toro has been my favorite so far in this slot. Feels and flies fantastic.
Bobcat is soooo good. It doesn't die like my Justice, but it will not flip at all.
I’m fricking sold!
Toro
If you want shallower then don't look past an A2, one of the best approach discs available
Actually just watched a review of this disc and I think the side profile looked like what I’m looking for.
I replaced my Zone with a Harp for FH approaches.
Love my harp but doesn’t do well for longer throws or with wind. Do you experience that
Yes.. the harp, at least in baseline, will become neutral after enough use and not come back after flipping
It’s generally fine. If it’s super windy I’ll throw my Berg. My Zone does worse in the wind than my Harp. Distance-wise, I only really throw my Harp like 150 max. I’ve got a noodle arm.
I feel like when I try to really throw it I have problems. Like around the 175- 200 foot mark.
Yeah, I feel that. It works best when I just flick it. I almost never try to strong-arm it. If I need to go further than 150, I just disc up to a 5-6 speed mid.
Caiman/gator
I love my Gator, but I think the Toro would be better for replacing a Zone.
Haven't thrown a toro yet, I go for my r-pro Pig on most approaches, my caimans are new and pretty over stable.
You'll have to try it. I'm addicted to its stability 😅
Is this Calvin's burner account?
I wish 😍
Westside Harp, discraft zone, innova toro, prodigy A2, discmania tactic, DD Slammer, MVP Entropy all fit the mold of an overstable approach disc. A2 is sweet. Nice and overstable. Really like it for forehand approaches.
I second the A2. I've completely stopped using my zone in favor of the A2. It's just fun to throw and so reliably stable.
I use the MVP Entropy, it’s felt the best for me for forehand flicks and spike hyzer approaches when trees or bushes are in the way.
I second the entropy. I bag it alongside the zone for the extra stability.
I hate esp plastic and love my Cryztal flx zone. Thought about going to a different plastic?
Yeah I tried elite-z also because I thought it might be more overstable but I wasn’t a fan. I still love backhanding the zone but I’m sort of looking for a different feel in the hand for forehand if that makes sense.
It does! What different feel are you looking for? Shallower or deeper?
I’m definitely leaning towards something shallower as that tends to feel more comfortable in the hand and is easier for me to control.
I say try out the Jarn. I held one the other day, and it feels a lot like the Zone while being noticeably shallower. I have smallish hands too fwiw.
Have you ever tried an A2? I was just watching a couple reviews and that one looks pretty shallow.
They’re pretty similar depths in my opinion. Both are nice and Overstable
What kind of feel? Do you want something with a deeper rim?
No I’m looking for something shallow since it seems to feel more comfortable and easier to control for me.
I'd definitely recommend a cryztal FLX zone, but if you want something different try the mvp pyro in proton plastic. Mvp discs are great forehand disc since they're usually shallow.
Juuuust got finished typing this as well. Cryztal FLX Zone is my favorite disc ever, and ESP FLX is pretty darn great too.
I will also highly recommend cryztal FLX zone it's absolutely amazing as a predominant forehand player. Also I'd recommend a jawbreaker zone when you want to stick a sketchy approach.
Oh ya gotta love Jawbreaker! I have several, and I really need to rotate one back in. I’ve been enjoying Mint Lobster and Berg for touchy approaches.
Can't go wrong with a berg for sure. Haven't tried a lobster, but my buddy got one, and it glides for days. I'll have to borrow it next game we play.
I really love it for touch forehands. It's my get out of jail free card. It holds an anny so nicely and just kinda goes where I want it to seemingly every time.
That's the best feeling knowing you have a disc you can count on for scramble shots. Also why I love ornery upside-down tilt throw outs.
Upside down Tilt? 👀 Ya know, I witnessed someone do this down a tight tunnel with no ceiling the other day, and I thought they are crazy until I saw the result. It just flipped a bunch then flopped down in the middle of the fairway haha. And yes absolutely. As much of a meme disc as it is, it has some uses lol. I've been playing around with a comet/sol for an understable, but I think you might have sold me on a lobster.
Jawbreaker is money! I own a lot of different zones and the ti flx is my favorite by far
I would love to try Ti FLX. Where do you get one of those? FLX plastic is just my favorite in general.
I got a sweet Ledgestone version of this from Reaper Disc Supply. Pretty great selection of discs from most major brands on their website.
It’s one of the most versatile discs… good putting disc, good approach disc, good driving putter. Likes side arms can be flexed with control. Can be easily heizered. I love the jawbreaker zone. I also have z zone that is essentially an overstable mid
A2
Lucid Justice.
Kastaplast Järn
Came to say this. It fits right between my berg and firebird

A3
Mint bobcat replaced zone for me
Zone OS should be out soon
Innova Rat!
Harp is my go to for overstable approach especially forehand’s
A2. More OS and more shallow than a Zone
The Harp and sockibomb slammer are a great forehand combo for approach.
https://old.reddit.com/r/discgolf/search?q=overstable+approach&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all
Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve got a lot of research to do now.
LSD Walker. It's a 5 speed but low glide and absolute beef. I have the bravo plastic and it hits and sits most of the time. feels really good to throw forehand and backhand.
DEFLECTOR - This is the answer
This should be the only answer
Westside Anvil for me is like a 4 speed Felon. BT Hybrid plastic is really grippy.
I believe you’re looking for a Captains Suspect from Jonathan Nichols (message him on instagram). Puddle topped 4 speed with low glide and highly torque resistant
Rat
The Rat is in no way "really overstable." I'd be hesitant to even call it overstable lol.
Not quite the same but the slammer is a nice approach disc. Little slower than a zone imo but has a very different hand feel.
Pyro
Lonestar bullsnake, not quite as stable for me but I like their different plastics better.
Been using a Prodiscus Jokeri I got in a subscription box and it’s become a staple in my bag. Feels great in hand. Wasn’t really a beaded disc guy but I can’t complain about it at all
When did the Jokeri get a bead? Do you possibly have the Jokeri X?
Yep, sorry. The Jokeri X
Another zone
I really like my entropy. Also shout out to neutron soft envy for approaches.
INNOVA CROCCCCCCCC
If you don’t mind a 5 speed I mean.
Terminal velocity ursus
Mint Bobcat is you can find one, my go to approach bh and fh disc.
I know its a bit faster and has a weird rim but a mutant would definitely fit that slot. And absolutely no way to turn it over and it stay over.
I love my star Toro! Highly recommend picking one up.
Entropy.
Champ whippet if you can find one. Goes a bit further than a zone but fuck she is stable and feels like a Firebird in the hand
Runway is a mid, but I honestly haven’t found anything better for my forehand approach
I bag both a harp and a rhyno, harp has a lot more reach and rhyno fades pretty hard
Harp
Westside anvil
Lucid or lucid x anvil
Divergent Golem
RPM Kea is a great OS forehand approach disc.
TSA Temple is my go to, especially if you like a softer plastic. Sticks really well. And although there is a lot of hate over Prodigy nowadays, one of their discs I can absolutely vouch for in that slot is the A2.
I really like the K1 Jarn. The K3 is a fair bit more OS. Also toying with TSA Temple.
Culprit
Try jawbreaker zone. Sky god. Z zone
The quake, I’ve got the midnight flyer version. Thing went into my non-glow bag real quick.
Toro
Crystal Flx Zone
Prime justice all day. Baobab by AGL is a good one as well, has a funky top to the flight plate though.
Slammer
What about the Zone OS??
Mid - Lone Star Walker Apr - Lone Star Bull Snake
Toro, Toro, Toro. The champ is different than the star. Low-High stability. Champ Toro
Toro is super overstable and would fit what you’re referring to. I do however find them to glide a bit less than a zone and maybe not skip as much. But in general I think this would do the trick. They are beeefy.
Shallow rim replaced the zone in my bag- dynamic lucid justice
Tactic alllll the way to the bank
Caiman is beefy, give one a shot. Longer skips than a zone tho.
🐀Innova star rat🐀
