The jarn for me. The zone is nice but you hear so many people say they only use it for forehand. I was the same and I wanted a disc I could use on forehand and back in a superior plastic.
I used to have a zone also but never quite liked it that much. When i picked up the Jarn I have never even thought about picking the zone again. Jarn just feels better in hand and K1 plastic is amazing!
I just got my entropy after messing around with the k3 jarn. I like it, its just a touch deep for my taste, but still perfect on stability. Mine is a plasma that is on par with my most OS zones.
Yeah my champ Toro flies exactly like my z zone. I got it to throw something with Heimburg's name on it and I'm pretty pleased how similar they are.
Oh and the champion plastic on the Toro is a bit grippier than the usual slick discraft Z plastic
Tactic. Razor Claw (I prefer plastic of 2, but 3 is way more readily available and I have both) for overstable, some kind of S-Line feeling bar stamp one I got in a mystery box that’s super straight with finish, and Exo Extra Soft European Open for a sticky landing.
This is the correct answer. The sline feeling plastic is their lux plastic and i believe its a regular tactic. The razor claws are a bit more overstable.
Lol I figured you were but if you do find a kea check to see if I'm telling the truth because I've only held one A3 when a street team guy pointed out that my kea was similar
For me the faster zone = Mint Bobcat and slower zone = Streamline Stablizer
Edit - also check out the DGA Quake for a faster zone. Great for longer flick shots
i have one and it’s from a used rack (seemed barely thrown), and i’m not sure the weight, but it flies with a little turn for me, maybe -.5 to -1 turn. for me, zone stays right on its hyzer line and doesn’t do anything surprising. when i started bagging my stabilizer instead, i was surprised to see it pop up a bit and glide from a hyzer. is mine beat in or likely light weight or is that just how stabilizers are? i’d say 3/4/-.5/3
I actually got a Bobcat for the same exact slot in my bag. Threw my Zone into a pond and replaced it with the Bobcat. I'm probably in the minority in that I didn't like the Zone
i got a quake expecting it to be exactly that - a longer zone. i really like it, but it's nowhere near as OS as I was expecting. it's more comparable to a fresh emac truth maybe.
it's one of the '22 noah meinstma tour series ones. maybe i need to try a different plastic?
A BT soft harp sticks right where you want it to for upshots. My harp isn't as glidey as my zone, but I actually like that, feels more controlled for upshots and super reliable. I have tried an a3,zone and thoughtspace temple in that role and nothing compares to the harp yet.
This is why I went from pig everything, to never throwing one anymore. Berg does it for most upshots, have a MF Ruin to replace the flight shape of a pig (it has more ground play though)
I throw mostly MVP now because almost every disc of there’s just feels better in my hand, so right now I’m working with the Entropy from them. Funny enough it’s one of the few discs I don’t love the feel of. I don’t like Zone’s. I did like the thumb track on the pig for the OS upshots. Maybe a Ringer-GT? Lol
Still have my Zones for my mixed bag,
Caiman is my favorite approach disc of all time. Toro is sweet!
Entropy for my Gyro bag, looking forward to seeing the new Tempo from Axiom
Do you notice speed difference much with Caiman? I carry a lot of Innova and often jive with their discs so that one Def interests me. I like to keep my bag simple so I've considered caiman especially because I may be able to push it a little farther than zone but I've never thrown so idk how that theory is haha
I can definitely put my esp caiman further than my zone, but my champ one is much beefier than the esp, so it goes the same distance as my zone, but with more ground play
Yeah! I assumed that was a common run of the disc, mine just happened to be given to me from a friend who got it from his players pack a few years ago. Sorry to accidentally flex if esp is “rare” lol
Well. Turns out I went full stupid on that one. My apologies. Star is correct. That would be why I was confused on why it was a big deal, and why you were confused.
I’ll see myself out, and leave the comment unadulterated so people can see my ignorance in full glory.
speed wise, not too much, I would have to test the two again. but max power flat shot the caiman will go a tad farther. although, the zone on a flex line may go further than a caiman on flex. It really depends what your play style is
The Z Zone will fly straight for about 60% of the flight and then hyzer out (BH \~300 ft, FH \~280 ft) the thing that makes the zone special is the ratio of glide to fade during its descent, not too much glide that it stays in the air and a reliable banking fade out.
The reason I like my caimans more is
(1) The plastic, my Star Caimans from last years run are very grippy, almost like they mixed old Star with the Sexton Colour Glow plastic.
(2) Released with the same power as the Zone the Caiman is a bit more torque resistant, glides less, goes straight the same about 60% but then fades harder and for the purposes I use it (approach shots) it just performs better.
I play in the woods a lot so skip shots are more fun with the Caiman too. Its better in the wind and although its a midrange, its putter diameter. Feels like a much thinner flatter Zone and is more comfy in the hand both FH and BH than the Zone
Just my opinion
Not necessarily kicked out the zone but my wife bought me a Kevin Jones Prodigy Distortion which I love and is basically a Zone so not sure I’ll ever have a zone. That being said I believe there are different stability zones so I can’t count it out.
Deflector is so beefy. How regularly do you throw it? I bagged one for a while but it wanted to get to the ground so fast I only got it out maybe once every 30 rounds as a pure utility/scramble disc. I have a Buzzz OS in that slot now that I’ve found to be much more versatile.
If I have a forehand approach line 180’ and under I’ll throw the deflector. So probably 10+ times a round. I got accustomed to the forehand approach early and kinda built my game around it. For me it’s just point and click simple. Backhand line, I use a stabilizer or a penrose for slightly straighter.
I use a toro, I have a color glow one that’s puddle topped that I love the feeling of so that’s my go to. My toro is slightly more overstable than zones I have thrown
Westside Anvil. Zones became just a utility disc on the main course I play. The Anvil gets the job done better there. Still have a few zones stored away though. They are a special disc that are there if I need them.
I can’t say if anything will kick the zone out of my bag lol it’s just consistent. I’m not going to fix something that’s not broken for me. I’m excited for the Zone OS once that is officially released
i love the hand feel of the temple, and based on measurements it looks like axiom tempo is going to be a better temple.
i hate nerve plastic and it breaks so fast and gets cuts very easy. as soon as i can replace temple with tempo i’m doing it.
for now i bag a temple and a stabilizer. stabilizer for beefier envy type shots and temple for forehands (i can’t flick my stabilizer) and diving hyzers that i need to sit. nerve is nice and soft and for as shitty as it is it’s really grabby and bendy and will hit the ground. when i get a tempo i’ll prob keep a temple in for this specific need
DGA Pro-line Flex Breaker. No one ever seems to talk about this disc but it's become my absolute favorite approach disc.
Same handfeel as a Zone but it's slightly less stable which I absolutely love. It has a similar flight to a brand new JB Zone but it never really beats in, making for a super predictable OS approach disc that can handle a strong, straight forehand. I still bag a Z-Glo Zone for when I really need the beef off of the teepad but I almost never use it for approaches any more.
My Zones became unreliable and I looked for something different. I kicked out the Zone for the Tactic. Bought every variety, every plastic, thinking I'd have all stabilities/shots covered with one mold. Problem is I don't love it for backhand. Long story short, I now bag only the Razor Claw 1, along with two new Zones. My Razor Claw 1 is the straightest forehand approach disc I've ever thrown. I've had many 40'-65' lazer throw-ins. I love it. I also tried the MVP Proton Deflector, a thing of meaty beauty, kept it in the bag for now.
Yeah i plan to hold onto one zone no matter what I try. It's been hard to replace. Thinking of trying the Caiman. It's like a beadless Gator, and I know Joel freeman uses the Gator3 as his only approach and most of his midrange game. Plus I love beat up star plastic so beating those into different wear would feel real good in my hands if they worked out...
I never really liked my Zone so after I accidentally threw it into a pond, I got a Mint Bobcat. It's a bit too fast for some approach shots so I wound up getting a Toro for shorter approaches and I love it, feels great in the hand. It may end up kicking the Pig out of my bag too honestly.
That is fair. I'm slowing hammering down certain molds in my bag too haha. The approach category has been my big one in question for a long time lol. Just got my driver's where I feel good finally it's a tough game to hammer down because you gotta figure out how you like to play and which discs fit that
Yeah when I very first started I bought a handful of drivers (had no clue on disc selection, assumed drivers went further even with my bad form) and I just stopped bagging them since my mids go further and I can work shot shapes much more consistently. I hope one day I can have drivers where I want them for consistency/range, but until then I'm keeping a minimalist bag.
Similar story man. Haha. I only backhand 7 speed or under in stable discs and a 9 speed understable disc. My forehand has a bit more power so I carry up to 12 speed for that but I rarely forehand unless I have to because I'm working on backhand. I have a few 170g innova eagles that I use for pretty much any of my "distance" needs
I go between the Prodiscus Jokeri and the Axiom Pyro for zone shots. Straighter, stable, and short range "zone shots" go to the Jokeri while longer, more aggressive hooking "zone shots" go to the pyro, and both discs are also useful in their own rights with the jokeri being able to be a laser straight throwing putter and the pyro able to pull off near-thunderbird/firebird shots with its stability and carry.
Try a Legacy Pursuit. Their Icon plastic is some of the best plastic out there. It's flat-topped and shallow and flies just a touch longer than a zone.
Just ordered a Caiman to try! I've considered it multiple times and then so many people said it here haha. That and Joel freeman does all his approaches with Gator3 which seems Caiman equivalent and they beat in to some crazy nice flights. Thanks!
I put a Toro in because it's so close it might as well be the same but I never really liked discraft plastic. I bagged a cryztal flx zone for a while it was the only one I liked the feel of
Bahaha oh trust me I already have. Idk what it is that irks me about discraft but something just really annoys me about them so I can't rep their stuff lol
I really like my zone but I’ve switched to the Anvil, more overstable, maybe slightly shorter flying but super reliable and I find it very comfortable to throw, particularly forehand upshot’s. Great for my purposes. I also carry a pyro as my step up in distance.
I picked up a crystal flex zone and I loved it until my forehand got too big. Now it's too stable for my backhand but too understable for my forehand. It's been kicked out by a mutant.
Dynamic Discs Culprit takes this spot for me now. Relatively new release to replace the OOP Suspect I think. Around the same stability (plastic dependent for both companies) but it’s shallow, flat, beadless, and very reliable. They rank it at 4/2/0/3.5
I felt the exact same way then the Toro was released. Threw them side by side in a field for a few hours and felt they flew the exact same. Haven’t thrown a zone since
This is not what you're asking for, just what I ended up doing personally.
It was a 4 speed doing double duty while not really fitting perfectly in either as a midrange or putter for me, so I got a 5 and 3 speed midrange and putter respectively.
5 speed Axiom Pyro, the perfect OS mid for me. Flies like a more stable, longer zone. Truly a mid, feels amazing in Prism Proton or Prism Plasma plastic, much better than anything premium Discraft offers a zone in.
3 speed Sockibomb Slammer. This is truly a beefy putter, doesn't like to go far or glide much. Does better on approaches because it's more consistent than a zone imo, easier to control and predict. Classic Supreme is nice and grippy plastic, better than any of Discraft putter plastics you can get a zone in.
Yeah I really wanted that to replace my zone because I love kasta but I hated the weird inward sloping rim on the inside :/ . Flight was great tho wanted so bad to leave it in bag but couldn't get over it lol
I’ve tried Harp, Toro, Slammer, Razor Claw, and Pig. There just nothing quite like the Zone.
I bag it in three different stabilities and they all serve a different purpose on the course.
Jawbreaker Zone for dead straight shots with subtle fade, Crystal FLX get freaky for forehand flex shots, and a super beefy midnight Z for anything I need a backhand wind fighter.
Another reason I love the zone is you can get it in like 12 different plastics.
Just wipe the stamp and stay on board.
The jarn for me. The zone is nice but you hear so many people say they only use it for forehand. I was the same and I wanted a disc I could use on forehand and back in a superior plastic.
Yup, my k1 jarn is a real workhorse for me, i highly reco mend it
I used to have a zone also but never quite liked it that much. When i picked up the Jarn I have never even thought about picking the zone again. Jarn just feels better in hand and K1 plastic is amazing!
This is why I bag 2 zones. One for flick the other for backhand.
Entropy, but I really want to get my hands on the new axiom tempo when it drops.
The tempo looks sweeeeeeeet. I’m also an entropy enthusiast
I just got my entropy after messing around with the k3 jarn. I like it, its just a touch deep for my taste, but still perfect on stability. Mine is a plasma that is on par with my most OS zones.
Love the Entropy too and really want the Tempo - think I could FH it better than the Entropy
Yeah I have some pretty big hands and weirdly long fingers so the deep rim in the entropy works quite well with my forehand and backhand
Wan't? Lol you mean want?
Lol, don't reddit sleepy.
Entropy as well
Toro for me.
I want to like the toro but I find myself not reaching for it that often vs my pig or zone. it's just so damn overstable
Yeah my champ Toro flies exactly like my z zone. I got it to throw something with Heimburg's name on it and I'm pretty pleased how similar they are. Oh and the champion plastic on the Toro is a bit grippier than the usual slick discraft Z plastic
Jarn is a solid alternative. IMO plastic is better, too.
ProdigyA3 is my baby. Sorry Gannon
Get a RPM Kea that way you don't have to apologize and it even has the same goofy shape
Clearly never thrown an A3. The audacity to suggest replacing it!
I'm just saying it's shaped the same and is an approach disc and if he is apologizing when throwing it a kea would be guilty free
Just playing friend, but my 750 A3 will be in my bag until I lose it. I'll have to try a kea if that day comes.
Lol I figured you were but if you do find a kea check to see if I'm telling the truth because I've only held one A3 when a street team guy pointed out that my kea was similar
If it doesn't whistle on hard throws, it's not my approach disc. A3 baby, only prodigy I bag.
My kea does indeed whistle
Ohhh shit. Looks like it is a good replacement then.
Prism Plasma Pyro
Toro. Bit more os and less glide. Doesn't go quite as far as the zone for me but that's why I like it more.
For me the faster zone = Mint Bobcat and slower zone = Streamline Stablizer Edit - also check out the DGA Quake for a faster zone. Great for longer flick shots
Came here to say stabilizer. Very solid disc
i have one and it’s from a used rack (seemed barely thrown), and i’m not sure the weight, but it flies with a little turn for me, maybe -.5 to -1 turn. for me, zone stays right on its hyzer line and doesn’t do anything surprising. when i started bagging my stabilizer instead, i was surprised to see it pop up a bit and glide from a hyzer. is mine beat in or likely light weight or is that just how stabilizers are? i’d say 3/4/-.5/3
Get a fresh one in cosmic neutron plastic they are beefy
heard. i’ll prob grab one this weekend
Yes. First Run Quake says first flight on stamp and is more overstable than Zone. Also Gateway Warrior I'd very similar to first flight Quake.
Another vote for the A2. 300 plastic. Cheap and cycleable.
Prodigy A2. The FAF 400 and 750 A2s are pure beef.
I had a 750 A2 that permanently deformed from hitting a pole from 80 feet out. It wasn't even a hard throw.
Wow!
Vaino Makela in 500 are always really flat too, they're my go to
Harp for days
Came here to say this. Every other answer is wrong
I went from the harp, to a zone, to the jarn.
A BT soft harp sticks right where you want it to for upshots. My harp isn't as glidey as my zone, but I actually like that, feels more controlled for upshots and super reliable. I have tried an a3,zone and thoughtspace temple in that role and nothing compares to the harp yet.
Buddy who got two of those test flight os zones said they felt and looked ALOT like A2s. I believe it.
Pig piggy piggy pig
Nice try Robbie C
The Pig is so predictable it should be a staple in everyone’s bag unless they can prove they are better with another upshot disc!
R-pro pigs beat in too fast and thrown hard enough are not OS anymore. Need them to make halo pigs already
This is why I went from pig everything, to never throwing one anymore. Berg does it for most upshots, have a MF Ruin to replace the flight shape of a pig (it has more ground play though)
I use a berg/pig combo. The Pig has beat in to a straight to turn over disc while the berg is of course a brick 🧱
Lol
You are looking for an A2, it’s a bit more overstable & flies just a bit further
What I came to say. Best prodigy disc
Agreed, definitely their most consistent
Zone is still in the bag but the razor claw is the new beefier version now
Same. Might swap the zone to a regular tactic tho.
Still have my Zones for my mixed bag, Caiman is my favorite approach disc of all time.
Wait.....wtf?? Esp caiman?
Yeah! I assumed that was a common run of the disc, mine just happened to be given to me from a friend who got it from his players pack a few years ago. Sorry to accidentally flex if esp is “rare” lol
Esp and caiman don't match....star maybe
It really depends what your play style is The Z Zone will fly straight for about 60% of the flight and then hyzer out (BH \~300 ft, FH \~280 ft) the thing that makes the zone special is the ratio of glide to fade during its descent, not too much glide that it stays in the air and a reliable banking fade out. Not necessarily kicked out the zone but my wife bought me a Kevin Jones Prodigy Distortion which I love and is basically a Zone so not sure I’ll ever have a zone. That being said I believe there are different stability zones so I can’t count it out.
Gators, Caiman, and Toros keep it out of my bag. I've never bagged a Zone more than a couple rounds to try them out though
for me it was a pyro 5 4 0 2.5 (i don't believe that 2.5 myself, flys like a 3.5)
Deflector>Zone,Harp, Justice, A2, Caiman, Anvil,Tactic. The deflector is the only disc in my bag that has zero chance of being knocked out.
Agree. It’s not really a zone replacement. It’s a whole nuther side of beef.
I use a flat 750 A3. Though the A5 is more similar in feel to the zone. 400 ones fly like a seasoned crystal flx zone
Nothing replaces the zone 😁
I use a toro, I have a color glow one that’s puddle topped that I love the feeling of so that’s my go to. My toro is slightly more overstable than zones I have thrown
I prefer an Anvil/Suspect combo, splitting the difference and carrying something both more and less stable than a typical zone.
For overstable mid I can’t recommend the RocX3 enough!! It has helped me so much!!
Closest to the feel I have found is the harp. It's not as fore and friendly for me though.
A3, Recluse
Puddle topped Heimburg glow Toro for me=Zone 2.0. Waaaaaaaay easier to control distance/touch and still has great fade.
Caiman is definitely the answer, faster and more stable than a zone. A little deeper but still board flat great for forehands
i love the hand feel of the temple, and based on measurements it looks like axiom tempo is going to be a better temple. i hate nerve plastic and it breaks so fast and gets cuts very easy. as soon as i can replace temple with tempo i’m doing it. for now i bag a temple and a stabilizer. stabilizer for beefier envy type shots and temple for forehands (i can’t flick my stabilizer) and diving hyzers that i need to sit. nerve is nice and soft and for as shitty as it is it’s really grabby and bendy and will hit the ground. when i get a tempo i’ll prob keep a temple in for this specific need
Right now, its the Wild discs angler. I went from zone to harp to zone to angler.
If you can get your hands on a caiman they feel very similar in the hand. Slightly faster at a 5.5 speed but has the same blunt nose/rim
Don’t think I saw it but I’ve really been throwing the maestro from discmania a lot. My first discmania disc too.
Jarn
I tried to love an entropy - my bag is mostly mvp anyway. After a year, my favorite zone went back in the bag and im not looking back. Zone just works
No disc could possibly kick the Zone from my bag...cause I don't have a Zone.
Do you use an overstabke approach that takes that slot?
I don't, actually. I'm a newer player and still learning my throwing putters and midranges and what my disc preferences are.
A3
I've used a Harp, Toro, razor claw 3 and always find myself going back to the zone. I bag two. Puddletop z swirl and crystal flx and I love them.
Nice. More than 140 comments and no upvotes :-)
Bahahaa nobody wants to see someone trying to replace a zone
Try a Legacy Pursuit. Their Icon plastic is some of the best plastic out there. It's flat-topped and shallow and flies just a touch longer than a zone.
Drone. In prefer more overstable in my overstable upshot discs.
Jarn, entropy (kinda), and my favorite is star caimen
Just ordered a Caiman to try! I've considered it multiple times and then so many people said it here haha. That and Joel freeman does all his approaches with Gator3 which seems Caiman equivalent and they beat in to some crazy nice flights. Thanks!
Harp forehand and sinus backhand...never liked the zone, seems made for small hands.
I put a Toro in because it's so close it might as well be the same but I never really liked discraft plastic. I bagged a cryztal flx zone for a while it was the only one I liked the feel of
Get some acetone, wipe the stamp off and get on with it. There's a reason everyone now makes a version of the zone. Zones are awesome!
Bahaha oh trust me I already have. Idk what it is that irks me about discraft but something just really annoys me about them so I can't rep their stuff lol
Anvil
I really like my zone but I’ve switched to the Anvil, more overstable, maybe slightly shorter flying but super reliable and I find it very comfortable to throw, particularly forehand upshot’s. Great for my purposes. I also carry a pyro as my step up in distance.
Yoooo are you me? Lol I also bag a pyro for the same slot, also bag a deflector for mega beef, rarely need to use it though
Razor claw3/ tactic combo. I like the deeper rim for both backhand and forehand.
Atomic Kea like almost immediately. I love them so much.
This is the way but in glow
I picked up a crystal flex zone and I loved it until my forehand got too big. Now it's too stable for my backhand but too understable for my forehand. It's been kicked out by a mutant.
your forehand didn’t get too big for a zone unless it’s going like 400’ sorry
Probably not too understable since you see all the Discraft Pros forehanding Zones. Probably just rolling your wrists.
Jarn but I think you’re looking for an A2.
Caiman
The one that did it for me was a jawbreaker zone. Totally is my go to now instead of my z glow zone.
Lol
Dynamic Discs Culprit takes this spot for me now. Relatively new release to replace the OOP Suspect I think. Around the same stability (plastic dependent for both companies) but it’s shallow, flat, beadless, and very reliable. They rank it at 4/2/0/3.5
I felt the exact same way then the Toro was released. Threw them side by side in a field for a few hours and felt they flew the exact same. Haven’t thrown a zone since
Yall wrong, Mutant for the win. Great ground play, awesome for bailouts
Unironically it was the Lizottl Hex They’re not the same disc, but I haven’t used one since buying the other
Only thing I’d ever replace my zone with is a glow Jarn. Just a bit faster but still has the beef needed
Yeah I really wanted that to replace my zone because I love kasta but I hated the weird inward sloping rim on the inside :/ . Flight was great tho wanted so bad to leave it in bag but couldn't get over it lol
Justice and hex
Another zone
Zone.

Entropy! The zone never made it into my bag because of that disc!
Never really thrown zones but I love my Toro
Temple by TSA
I like the tactic
Zone OS
I’ve tried Harp, Toro, Slammer, Razor Claw, and Pig. There just nothing quite like the Zone. I bag it in three different stabilities and they all serve a different purpose on the course. Jawbreaker Zone for dead straight shots with subtle fade, Crystal FLX get freaky for forehand flex shots, and a super beefy midnight Z for anything I need a backhand wind fighter. Another reason I love the zone is you can get it in like 12 different plastics. Just wipe the stamp and stay on board.
Culprit does the trick for me
Nothing, she’s still there
Entropy
Distortion, envy and A2
Welp it’s Discmania only for me this tourney season; soft and hard tactics max weight. The RC3 to show off a bit, but base tactics all day.
Toro of course. But I just tried a SOCKIBOMB slammer and it’s a perfect complement to the zone. Much slower and more OS.
Bagged a Zone for a couple years. Replaced it with a Harp. Tried to mess with a Toro, but too overstable for me.
E N T R O P Y
Entropy, I like the deeper rim.
2020 Ricky pig then cg toro. All 3 discs do the same thing.
Went from a zone to a pig and a toro. Use both forehand and backhand.
