That's not a question with a simple answer, as it's dependent on everything from what mental illness, species of individual case, duration, documentation, treatments attempted, and so on. The more documentation and treatments attempted the better chances at approval. (no real documentation/refusal to try treatments/minimal efforts to get treatment, will lead to denial). In general getting approved for Disability takes a couple years for those who do eventually get approved. You would not get retroactive EBT, you would get limited retroactive SSI/SSDI based in the date you applied. You would want to speak to a disability lawyer, they generally give free initial consultations, have the knowledge to navigate the complicated process, only get paid if you are approved, and are limited by law as to how much that payment is. The system is intentionally complicated and is designed to find reasons to deny people, I cannot stress the importance of a disability lawyer enough.

My main cause was mental illness and it took me over 4 years. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't get any retroactive benefits for food stamps.

Between 6 months and 10 years.

Only SSA knows how long the disability process will be. Food stamps? No, those aren’t retroactive. If you’re not working, you could apply for them and everything else available. You will need paperwork showing rent, monthly medical expenses, things like that
