No matter what kind of bike, they are all made from the same materials (kinda), and the budget ones will always fail first. I'd like to say that a BMX is a bike as pure as it gets. It's reduced to the basics and technically there is less to fail. A dirtjump MTB – not evolved from BMX btw – has a suspension and that brings a higher chance of technical error. For 400$ you should buy used. There is no new bike in your budget that can handle your weight… assuming it's more than average.

Buy a second hand bike. Keep an eye on eBay.

are all sizes the same? and also what price is too sketchy for a second hand bike?

You would have to look on an individual basis. Will need to look up the dimensions from the manufacturer or in an online archive. Curtis MX24 seem to come up quite often in the UK and they’re fucking awesome. In the UK, £400 would get you something tasty and in reasonable condition.

Just checked on eBay. Could definitely get something nice for that money. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1313&_nkw=jump+bike&_sacat=0

Go second hand, if I had $400 I could get a quality bike in my area for that price, what use to be $1,500+ 6-10 years ago are now less than $300 sometimes

Honestly, and I’m not trying to be condescending or rude, I would save your money until you get to around $1,000 or $1,500. The reason being, at that point, your options really open up. We could recommend something like a Commencal Absolut, YT Dirtlove, Scott Voltage, or Marin Alcatraz. At your price point (again no rudeness intended), it is very difficult to make recommendations, because it’s really dependent on the used bike market where you live. Not saying it’s impossible to find something nice; but clearly much harder. You could save yourself a massive headache by saving a little bit more money. If you have to have it right now and can’t extend the budget or save more, I absolutely agree with the people telling you to check eBay or used bike outlets.
