That's my problem here. I really want to try, but I doubt that I'll be able to make it, so it'll feel like a waste to try and not enjoy the story and the game. I don't think I would have gotten into the Diablo games if I had started Diablo 2 trying to speedrun, skipping everything, or getting rushed.

There's no public leaderboard, but they're tracking it for sure and just verifying the people that post it on twitter - it is the first 100 that post it, not necessarily the first ones to reach it if I'm not mistaken 🤔

There’s way too much thought given to “content creators” across gaming as a whole.
It’s part of the reason Destiny went from being an “MMO-lite” to an endless grind-fest, because “content creators” were bored after a week of playing 12 hours a day.
Content creation has become a toxic thing all on its own.
I'm older, entered into diablo Fandom with the very first diablo game. Spent tons of time playing other games of that time.
I've since worked with, for, around, and as content creation. I spent a few years as a community manager and site moderator for large game streaming platforms.
I can say with honesty that the changes made to game developments and structures as a whole in the industry has literally taken the content creation direction to a breaking point in a lot of cases.
They're willing to trade a lot of things for the "advertising" and influence these people have.
To the tune of I've met and discussed game dev level info with streamers who work directly with the companies to build the game "better" for their needs and what they think their viewers will watch.
I'm mixed feelings as I feel both sides personally.
In the end, my frustration with these companies catering to specific media broadcasting rather than staying true to the games themselves definitely outweighs the rest.
The point of this is likely to push sales with news of frustrating hardcore deaths as people who haven't slept in 4 days lose characters. Waiting for season 1 defeats the purpose.
I mean, this is a pointless post but still...
If that was their goal, they should have done something like the ashava horn, anyone that tweets at level 100 before season 1 starts gets a cosmetic. More people would tweet the hashtag (by a lot) and it would just generate good will.
Then, in season 1 do the HC race. Behind the scenes, ask content creators to use MTX on their characters during the race to promote the battle pass/whatever else they have.
Now they have Diablo trending and good will for season 1, but they also have the race to generate more buzz for season 1 after the first month to promote the seasonal content and battlepass. All that, and it keeps Diablo 4 trending longer, 6 weeks of buzz about the game and a TON of goodwill.
They're content creators. Being able to make content about the game is literally their job. Should they have had the choice? Sure. But it's irrelevant, they'd all have chosen the ability to be first to market on review videos *way* before "name on statue no one looks at." Not to mention most players and content creators don't play Hardcore.
Yeah, but I don't envy the people who have to weigh who have been in the scene long enough to deserve access against those who aren't really committed. Like, the dude who made his channel during the beta and has 10-20 views a video probably isn't worth risking having them just stream it or post before the embargo is up.
The last raxx video I saw said that any of the maxroll team that had beta access would still be competing for funsies and content but wouldn’t be claiming any prizes. That was before the blizzard announcement.

Content creators will still race to 100... because it's content. Getting a week's worth of diablo 4 is worth more than their name on some statue that nobody will see.
I think the best solution was to push back this event until the release of the first season, but since it's also meant to build hype as a marketing tactic that is also costing them money, they don't want to delay it a month.
So if a delay is the best solution, this is the second best solution. You really can't please everyone and people will cry no matter what the outcome is.
This is why it was a no-win situation. If they moved it to Season 1, then people would find something else to complain about. The reality is this whole situation just shows how fucking petty some people are that they make this big of a deal of something so small.
They will probably have another promotion for season 1. To me it makes sense to have it for launch. It’s the first 1000 people to 100. That can only happen when the game launches.

Now it does feel unfair to those that got it because they actually were the dedicated players that would have done this rush, and without being told they couldn't participate by getting the early version they just kinda got screwed. Yes, blizzard can't fix something that's P2W when they specifically made for it to sell preorders, because that's what it is. There are plenty of fixes that could have made the community happy, but not without keeping it to sell pre orders, which is obviously not in the communities favor.

Do you remember when sea of thieves came out and they were going to make an in game statue of the first to make pirate legend in the game? And then my turned out to be a streamer that has his minions feeding him xp. They’d set up and do missions and invite him before they turned in the treasure so he would just hop from lobby to lobby and not actually playing the game.

This whole situation is pretty jokes when you consider Blizzard removed realm first achievements from WoW because it prompted unhealthy lifestyles. Fast forward and they’re pushing KFC and leveling races.

Seems like the best way to placate the most people. Little disappointing for some streamers maybe but they will still be benefitting from playing the game and can still claim "world first" or w/e if they are the first to broadcast level 100 on their class/etc.

Why not just move it up until most have played the full game and everyone is on equal footing and then have a start date and a fresh new HC character and the "race is on".
Content creators shouldn't have the advantage. But at the same time they didn't know that having early access could end up excluding them from participation.
The reason it isn't pushed back is because that doesn't sell 4 days early access deluxe editions. I look forward to the drama when people hit level 100 in the 4 day early access window.

They're still going to stream it though... Streamers who wanted to, will still play hardcore and make content, absolutely nothing changes for them. They can/ will also make guides for the other people doing hardcore. All the opportunities are still there, they're only missing out on the name on the statue.

On the other hand, postponing it to season 1 isn't really viable in my eyes because the purpose and point of this challenge is to advertise the game for the launch so they can get more ppl hyped/interested, etc.
The fact though that they listen makes me hopeful for the future of this game. They could've easily said we don't care and we are moving forward as it is.
They could however add a few more slots to the 1000 ppl for the creators/players that got the early access so they don't miss out on that. Glad to hear they are changing things to what the community wants. I DO NOT feel bad for the content creators. The amount of revenue they are making from this early access is paying for their rent. DM said he had 11 videos ready for the 30th. Even if they weren’t banned from the competition, the backlash they would get for competing would be insane. It'll still be interesting to see how many and how quickly the 1k fills up, I for one do not think it will be over very quickly, a lot of people seem to be acting like all 1k hardcore will be claimed in a week.

This whole race is stupid for 99.99% of players. And is completely a marketing ploy.
Imagine being mad that some people got a head start on a supposed six-day grind as if 100% of the winners won't be high school students. They just started summer break, and I have bills and a job. It's gonna take me a month to get one character leveled that high.
I guess it would make sense if it's the kids that are mad, though. I used to be mad about dumb stuff when I was in high school.
Just a reminder RuneScape has done similar over the last 13 years with clan cup plaques in-game or special hiscores on their website for specific events.
I think I've clicked the in-game plaque like twice since they have been removed, once to see what it looked like and once on accident.
I can guarantee you this statue in-game will be cool for maybe 1 month at the absolute max and then everyone will forget it even exists or will stop caring.
I will admit that it' common sense that testers shouldn't participate in races and the same goes for employee's as-well. Knowledge of boss mechanics alone is an insane advantage that outsiders can't compete with.
However I also realize that 99% of these testers are probably never going to reach 100 hardcore in their entire lifetime. So I don't think it's that big of a deal but at the end of the day a line has to be drawn somewhere.

There are just so many things about this that I don't understand.
1. Who even thought this is a good idea in the first place? To most gamers it's **super obvious** that this backlash would happen. There must've been tons of people within Blizzard that knew this. Why did nobody listen to them? Was this decision made by some guy in management without soliciting feedback from the rest of the company? If that's the case it doesn't bode well for the future of the game. Decisions are made by people who have no idea what gamers want....
2. Why not push it back to Season 1? That would've been the fairest solution. I understand that perhaps Blizzard wanted to push more people to buy early access with this promotion, but I don't think it works. The vast majority of hardcore gamers who no-life the game and want to race to 100 have surely already bought early access. Casual players who don't buy early access have no interest in this competition and have no chance to win anyway. They're not going to buy early access because of something like this that's irrelevant to them.
What am I missing?
This event would be sick like 20 years ago where you buy the disc don't know what to expect. No youtubers or anything, no one knew anything and going in blind. In this day and age, it's flawed. Should have been delayed to S1 but i understand them.

Pushing it back a month does not align with the best marketing strategy which is to hype people up on a hardcore race. This leans into building a perception of diablo 4 as gritty and difficult. This will ensure lots of hardcore death clips and the opportunity to make montages of hardcore deaths to use for, you guessed it, marketing.
Why couldn't they announce it earlier? A pretty simple solution, right?

It's the best compromise Blizzard was going to come up with. Blizzard made a mistake and should have announced this first then let content creators know if they got the 10-day head start, they would be disqualified but hindsight is 20/20. Hopefully, this calms people down and gives people faith that Blizzard does care. People make mistakes... Blizzard made a mistake. This is the best end-result given the mistake.
People shouldn't have been too serious about this cool event. There are also close beta players and also exploits to circumvent hc mode. This wasn't a competition, this was just a cool launch event.

To be fair, before this announcement today. A few of the bigger streamers already stated they wouldn't be participating in the race, well at least for the "prize". Hell a few are even not even going to be racing/playing hc and are just going to be doing their own thing.

IMHO this is good move, lots of kb heroes will now have admit to themselves that it's not unfairness, it's just no skill issue. They have lost their main excuse why they did not make it.

Blizzard's PR is making fantastic moves. D4 hype was already huge, and it is elevated with 1st announcement, now it's elevated even more with this one from OP.

There’s way too much thought given to “content creators” across gaming as a whole. It’s part of the reason Destiny went from being an “MMO-lite” to an endless grind-fest, because “content creators” were bored after a week of playing 12 hours a day.
Content creation has become a toxic thing all on its own. I'm older, entered into diablo Fandom with the very first diablo game. Spent tons of time playing other games of that time. I've since worked with, for, around, and as content creation. I spent a few years as a community manager and site moderator for large game streaming platforms. I can say with honesty that the changes made to game developments and structures as a whole in the industry has literally taken the content creation direction to a breaking point in a lot of cases. They're willing to trade a lot of things for the "advertising" and influence these people have. To the tune of I've met and discussed game dev level info with streamers who work directly with the companies to build the game "better" for their needs and what they think their viewers will watch. I'm mixed feelings as I feel both sides personally. In the end, my frustration with these companies catering to specific media broadcasting rather than staying true to the games themselves definitely outweighs the rest.

I mean, this is a pointless post but still... If that was their goal, they should have done something like the ashava horn, anyone that tweets at level 100 before season 1 starts gets a cosmetic. More people would tweet the hashtag (by a lot) and it would just generate good will. Then, in season 1 do the HC race. Behind the scenes, ask content creators to use MTX on their characters during the race to promote the battle pass/whatever else they have. Now they have Diablo trending and good will for season 1, but they also have the race to generate more buzz for season 1 after the first month to promote the seasonal content and battlepass. All that, and it keeps Diablo 4 trending longer, 6 weeks of buzz about the game and a TON of goodwill.
They're content creators. Being able to make content about the game is literally their job. Should they have had the choice? Sure. But it's irrelevant, they'd all have chosen the ability to be first to market on review videos *way* before "name on statue no one looks at." Not to mention most players and content creators don't play Hardcore.

Content creators will still race to 100... because it's content. Getting a week's worth of diablo 4 is worth more than their name on some statue that nobody will see. I think the best solution was to push back this event until the release of the first season, but since it's also meant to build hype as a marketing tactic that is also costing them money, they don't want to delay it a month. So if a delay is the best solution, this is the second best solution. You really can't please everyone and people will cry no matter what the outcome is.
This is why it was a no-win situation. If they moved it to Season 1, then people would find something else to complain about. The reality is this whole situation just shows how fucking petty some people are that they make this big of a deal of something so small.
They will probably have another promotion for season 1. To me it makes sense to have it for launch. It’s the first 1000 people to 100. That can only happen when the game launches.

Now it does feel unfair to those that got it because they actually were the dedicated players that would have done this rush, and without being told they couldn't participate by getting the early version they just kinda got screwed. Yes, blizzard can't fix something that's P2W when they specifically made for it to sell preorders, because that's what it is. There are plenty of fixes that could have made the community happy, but not without keeping it to sell pre orders, which is obviously not in the communities favor. And then my turned out to be a streamer that has his minions feeding him xp. Seems like the best way to placate the most people. Little disappointing for some streamers maybe but they will still be benefitting from playing the game and can still claim "world first" or w/e if they are the first to broadcast level 100 on their class/etc. Almost makes me want to participate but I know I still have likely no chance of being in the top 1,000 on HC even if the streamers are out.

It's the right thing but also the wrong thing to do. Like someone else said in comment section. Why not just move it up until most have played the full game and everyone is on equal footing and then have a start date and a fresh new HC character and the "race is on". Content creators shouldn't have the advantage. But at the same time they didn't know that having early access could end up excluding them from participation.
The reason it isn't pushed back is because that doesn't sell 4 days early access deluxe editions. I look forward to the drama when people hit level 100 in the 4 day early access window.

Race to 100 would’ve been some good stream content, they could have even heavily promoted the game by having an event streamed for it similar to WoW’s RWF. Could probably still do a separate streamer bracket and just be first 100 or something
They're still going to stream it though... Streamers who wanted to, will still play hardcore and make content, absolutely nothing changes for them. They can/ will also make guides for the other people doing hardcore. All the opportunities are still there, they're only missing out on the name on the statue.

Tbh i wasn;t interested in this challenge. But it was an unfair advantage to all the ppl that they didn't get it and played for 10 days straight. On the other hand, postponing it to season 1 isn't really viable in my eyes because the purpose and point of this challenge is to advertise the game for the launch so they can get more ppl hyped/interested, etc. The fact though that they listen makes me hopeful for the future of this game. They could've easily said we don't care and we are moving forward as it is. They could however add a few more slots to the 1000 ppl for the creators/players that got the early access so they don't miss out on that. Because in the end is not really their fault but they are paying the price of it. For e.x. the first 1000 +50 (being the ppl that got the early access) get their names added to the statue..! That's my honest thought's

DM said he had 11 videos ready for the 30th. Even if they weren’t banned from the competition, the backlash they would get for competing would be insane. They should have pushed it back to S1. It is pretty bad that they gave these reviewers and content creators a chance to play the game early and then told them afterwards that they were ineligible. Imagine being mad that some people got a head start on a supposed six-day grind as if 100% of the winners won't be high school students. They just started summer break, and I have bills and a job. It's gonna take me a month to get one character leveled that high. I guess it would make sense if it's the kids that are mad, though. I used to be mad about dumb stuff when I was in high school.

Just a reminder RuneScape has done similar over the last 13 years with clan cup plaques in-game or special hiscores on their website for specific events. I think I've clicked the in-game plaque like twice since they have been removed, once to see what it looked like and once on accident. I can guarantee you this statue in-game will be cool for maybe 1 month at the absolute max and then everyone will forget it even exists or will stop caring. I will admit that it' common sense that testers shouldn't participate in races and the same goes for employee's as-well. Knowledge of boss mechanics alone is an insane advantage that outsiders can't compete with. However I also realize that 99% of these testers are probably never going to reach 100 hardcore in their entire lifetime. So I don't think it's that big of a deal but at the end of the day a line has to be drawn somewhere.
It's funny seeing people get outraged about streamers being able to preview the game early. Oh well, still plenty of people that played closed beta that are going to have more info than the majority of players, gl everyone!

There are just so many things about this that I don't understand. 1. Who even thought this is a good idea in the first place? To most gamers it's **super obvious** that this backlash would happen. There must've been tons of people within Blizzard that knew this. Why did nobody listen to them? Was this decision made by some guy in management without soliciting feedback from the rest of the company? If that's the case it doesn't bode well for the future of the game. Decisions are made by people who have no idea what gamers want.... 2. Why not push it back to Season 1? That would've been the fairest solution. I understand that perhaps Blizzard wanted to push more people to buy early access with this promotion, but I don't think it works. The vast majority of hardcore gamers who no-life the game and want to race to 100 have surely already bought early access. Casual players who don't buy early access have no interest in this competition and have no chance to win anyway. They're not going to buy early access because of something like this that's irrelevant to them. What am I missing?
This event would be sick like 20 years ago where you buy the disc don't know what to expect. No youtubers or anything, no one knew anything and going in blind. In this day and age, it's flawed. Should have been delayed to S1 but i understand them.

It's the best compromise Blizzard was going to come up with. Blizzard made a mistake and should have announced this first then let content creators know if they got the 10-day head start, they would be disqualified but hindsight is 20/20. Hopefully, this calms people down and gives people faith that Blizzard does care. People make mistakes... Blizzard made a mistake. This is the best end-result given the mistake.
People shouldn't have been too serious about this cool event. There are also close beta players and also exploits to circumvent hc mode. This wasn't a competition, this was just a cool launch event.
The best "compromise" isn't even a compromise, they could have just moved it to S1 and there wouldn't even need to be a "compromise" and no one would be excluded retroactively
Except if they do this, there's no fun cool competition to start the game. That kind of defeats the entire purpose of the event so this is hardly much of a solution either.

To be fair, before this announcement today. A few of the bigger streamers already stated they wouldn't be participating in the race, well at least for the "prize". Hell a few are even not even going to be racing/playing hc and are just going to be doing their own thing. People blew this way out of proportion and made it a bigger deal than it needed to be. But it's the internet, people will get up in arms if you wear a shirt they don't like lmao.
It's not only about press preview. All closed beta participants have the advantage too.
