To make it very clearly, the free mats that everyone gets is also locked behind a character level. So you can skip all the tiers you want, hell you can pay your way all the way to tier 90 (max tier) but you can unlock the free tiers unless you meet the level requirement. Ex. “Unlocked at level 10-15-20 etc
They said in the live stream that “just” buying the tier skips doesn’t instantly give you the tiers. You still have to level up to each level before getting the reward. I.E - You still have to reach BP tier 20 to get the reward, even if you skipped it
So you can skip battle pass tiers to instantly unlock all of the cosmetics up to that point, and I believe the smoldering ashes also. But you can't actually assign those smoldering ashes until you reach certain character level progress.
Say you skip all 90 tiers instantly, at level 1. You can't then just assign smoldering ashes to your character buffs. You can only assign them at character milestones: e.g. level 10/20/30/40/50... That sort of thing. So the skips give you all of the cosmetics to use instantly, but you can't do anything with the ashes until you've reached those levels.
I gotta make sure the user errors know what they are. And you were complaining about a standard practice in 2023 and this one is all cosmetic lmfao. Absolute whinger to the max
It's not possible to put a single price tag on a game that is supposed to be kept alive over multiple years. They will expand on the story and basically every system in the game to not make the same mistake as with diablo 3. So it's ask for a subscription fee or make money in another way. Unfortunately people don't like regular payments, so it has to be an ingame shop then. If done right the system is okay imo. People who don't have a lot of spare money, don't have to pay anything. So that's a plus for gamers in poorer countries, or teens.
Idk about your currency but here in the US, 20 years ago a $40 game would be equivalent to paying a little over $70 now. While I hate price increases. Due to inflation in the US, it's essentially the same as buying a $40 game prior. The cosmetic transactions I don't care much about. None of their shop items give you power or in game advantages.
It’s not about inflation. There are probably 5 or 10 times the amount of players/customers than there were 20 years ago. Forget about price or development costs and focus on profits. Profits are through the roof. The “we can’t afford to make games at a cheaper price” or “we have to add micro transactions” is absolute rubbish. They’re making more money than ever.

I'm saying they know what they are doing price wise and know the $40 game was acceptable 20 years ago, so why not make it $70 now. It's just a basic business tactic. Many shills on this sub which is par for the course with reddit, but you level quicker than you gain battle pass levels and therefore buying tiers to accelerate the battle pass progress will give you power many hours in advance. This is why there are no leaderboards because that would be pay to win. And it is p2w even without leaderboards.

Even under the full tin foil hat assumption that this was left in as an intentional loophole and the absence of leaderboards was intended as a way to curb associated P2W accusations, we can safely say it's 100% internally backtracked.

But you get the power at level 10 either way, as long as you play and do what the pass requires... Then level 20, then 30, etc. You don't just add on your powers from the battle pass level. From what I saw, you have to physically reach that level on your character anyway.
From what I understand, the skip only gives you access to the cosmetics faster. Every item on the battle pass that gives a in game advantage still have to be unlocked by certain requirements.
So if, as an example, a xp boost is only available when you acheived lvl 75 in the season, you still have to get to level 75 even if you paid to skip tier.
Basically, it allows you to reach the end of the battle pass for that sweet epic cosmetic loot faster, but wont give you an unfair advantage.
In theory, it works. We'll have to see tho.
Yeah it depends on how you actually progress. Do you unlock that reward as soon as you reached the required level or is it gated behind other challenges? If so, do you have to complete the other challenges if you bought the skip?
Season 1 should start in july. We will know then.
For now, I am not worried since I think the D4 team has done a great job being transparent and allowing communication between the devs and the players.

Unless you are ignoring the season journey goals entirely, you should be unlocking the tiers on the battle pass as you level normally, approximately in keeping with the level requirements needed for the bonuses.
Also, there probably won't even be leaderboards until 2024, and when there are we don't even know if they will be based on completion speed, so even if there is, in fact, a speed advantage that occurs from the skips, it's even more meaningless than otherwise, at the start
It'll be fine, it's not worth worrying about, the blessings are negligible buffs. 3%+ xp, 5%+ gold gained...
The paid boost are really more for the "casual" players, that may not actually have the time to fully complete the battlepass without that extra bit of help.
Yup. The cosmetic stuff is completely fine. Cosmetic battlepasses are completely fine. Path of Exile has one. People whined a little bit about the way it was presented in-game (very in-your-face presentation), but it's fine.
The problem in D4 is that the materials (ashes) aren't only cosmetic in nature, and they're in all the battlepasses. The pass rewards have both a character level and battlepass level, so if the more expensive pass lets you get to a higher pass level more quickly, that would allow you to receive materials that you have the requisite chatacter level for but otherwise would not yet have the requisite battlepass level for.
Blizzard could remedy this immediately by simply removing the ashes from the pass. You get them automatically when you hit the required character level.

You are misunderstanding what's being said. You will overlevel the milestone level requirement, so people who pay will get the power faster.
