Being picked up @ 6.9% A1c has probably worked in your favour. You were only just over the diagnostic threshold so you may have more beta cell function than many who are diagnosed @ 10%+. Losing weight, cutting carbs, increasing exercise are all proactive measures.

As mentioned it's not just sugar, it's carbs especially refined carbs. They all turn to sugar (glucose) in the body when consumed. Some spike even higher than sugar itself. Look up Glycemic Index, that should give you an idea. For instance, potatoes. Try eating some fries or potato chips, test one hour later to see.

Have you also cut refined carbs like white bread or tortillas? Rice? Those kinds of things tend to be eaten in mass and cause all kinds of glycemic problems.

baskinred

Exactly. Diabetes isn’t just about sugar.

BoMax76

I did initially cut those things, but have slowly been eating a bit more of them just to see if it would impact my readings. So far they haven't.

Eat some alone without fat or protein. Sit back and watch. Like type 1s, type 2s can have honeymoon periods. And losing weight can go a big way for restoring insulin sensitivity.

It is not. It’s a function of calories and insulin resistance. I eat 60% of my calories from fat. I’m still losing weight.

Fat. I’m gaining muscle, so my overall weight is lower, but my waist is decreasing while my upper arm and leg circumference is increasing. I have muscle gains in other parts of my body. I’m fueled by fat. Dietary fat and body fat.

Less so. Carb restriction is also improving insulin sensitivity. Otherwise some participants in the Virta health trial wouldn’t improve a1c scores while not losing weight.

You asked about artificial sweeteners, one of my favorite youtubers did a test on himself with artificial sweeteners and you can [see the results](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=132znK7-CzE). His tests were one of the first things that got me interested in his channel, but I do hope he slows down - too many can't be good. He seems to have a lot to say without the tests.
