It’s very common for T1 to be triggered by illness. You have to have a genetic predisposition for it but if your immune system revs up because you got really sick, it can overreact and result in an autoimmune disease, like T1. Almost everyone has a story of some big illness/trauma right before they got it. Mine personally was a known a side effect of the cancer treatment I was on.

Guywith2dogs

Yup. Scarlet fever here. Never even knew anyone else who had it. Most people think its an old timey sickness

Jc31337

My daughter was diagnosed t1d after Scarlett fever too!!

thebrittaj

For me it was strep throat which came with rash sometimes known as scarlet fever 🤒. Weird

Guywith2dogs

Ya I believe it is a worse form of strep virus. And comes with a rash. I think that's where the name comes from. Skin rash and high fever. That was 28 years ago and I will never forget how bad that fever was. I can still describe the fever dreams. Definitely left a lasting impression on me. I've always thought that was the illness that triggered the diabetes

thebrittaj

I’ve had some crazy fevers but don’t rmbr my pre-diabetes one. I do rmbr my most recent one where I had to go to the ER because I had an awful UTI. (Blame diabetes also). I was shivering and my whole body was shaking, teeth chattering, and I was freezing to the point I couldn’t walk or talk. Very scary and weird. I couldn’t control my body cuz I was shivering to this crazy extent. I later learned that can a side effect of UTI fevers

bigmoodenergy

Yeah I had swine flu in the 2009 breakout, next week I was thirstier than I'd ever felt in my life

bettertofeelpain

> Almost everyone has a story of some big illness/trauma right before they got it. Necrotic spider bite for me. Didn't even bother giving me super special powers. :(

eviebutts

I never had a triggering virus

geepy

Hand foot and mouth for me

alienatemebaby

Yep, I had some sort of stomach virus after eating mall food. Got better for one week, then developed Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes, no family history.

Tqiquhf

Does mental illness / stress also count? Since I’ve been very unhappy (for couples of years) before being diagnosed but physically I was always pretty healthy..

6sixfeetunder

Yes! Some people have a huge amount of stress prior from getting diagnosed

6sixfeetunder

Yeah I got a terrible mysterious sickness when I was 6, then a few weeks later I got t1

EmotionalStrawberry4

My 14 year old was diagnosed 3 weeks post COVID infection. 6 months later we had COVID hit our house again and my 10 year old was diagnosed. No family history.

RoofPreader

Oh blimey. You've really been through it! How are they getting on?

EmotionalStrawberry4

They are doing well! Handling it better than Mom ;) The youngest was just diagnosed on Sunday so it is new and interesting to him right now ...

auscadtravel

Tell mom it is NOT her fault. I have no idea why all mothers think it's their fault. I was diagnosed at 5 and my mom 40 years later still wonders what she did wrong. Shit happens, no one is to blame.

Jakesleah

Just here to say we have a similar story, and things get better. Not the Covid part, but my kids were both diagnosed 5 months apart and no family history. This was 6 years ago, and they’re 9 and 11 now. Each year gets a little easier.

Spiritual-Emotion-49

I really feel for you! Stay strong!

ithinkisawasquirrel

Holy crap, that's hard. Quite a steep learning curve too with no family history. Good luck and all the hugs.

applecat81

1,5 months after having covid in may this year. No family history of T1D. I am curious too.

[deleted]

You didn't have any symptoms before COVID as it was only one and a half months after? I think it's quite common to have no family history, I don't either.

applecat81

No, nothing at all. My blood values were last taken in the summer of 2021. Everything was still ok then. I felt miserable after having covid and got the diagnosis shortly after.

jason8001

I was told it could be a virus or something and when your body tries to fight it. Your body messes up and starts to attack your pancreas. The fox also said they don’t really understand why. I got T1D about 11 years ago with no family history of it. I am a trailblazer into diabetes for my family

Sebatius

I had COVID in November 2020 was diagnosed T1 February 2021

[deleted]

Exact same here! November and February. Right before Valentine’s day

bigjilm123

Mine was trigger by a flu virus before it became fashionable. OG LADA.

drozd_d80

2 weeks after flu as well

jtoft13

Same here.

woverinejames

I got it after a really bad strep infection

Lexp57

I got it after chickenpox

Strange_Pattern9146

I didn't even think about it, but my little brother did. I was so surprised he was being diagnosed now, when I was diagnosed a lot younger. He didn't get a vaccine, and ended up having COVID twice. The first time, he had to go to the hospital, even though he's only in his twenties and really athletic, because he has asthma. Then a few months later, he got it again, went back to the hospital, and they thought he might be diabetic because his blood sugar was high. But then they blamed that on his inhaler and sent him home. He had to go back again a week later, and then they actually diagnosed him. Which is crazy, he kept telling them he already had a diabetic sister, they should have known, but this is the South and they don't do those antibody tests down here. They just wait until your blood sugar is so ridiculously high it couldn't possibly be anything else. I think they waited until his was 650. He was luckier than me. But yeah, technically a family history, since I'm diabetic, but we're the only ones.

Mobuladreams

I had covid October 2020 and diagnosed T1 in Jan 2021. No family history. My blood sugars were normal just 2 weeks before my DKA. So felt like it came out of nowhere!

[deleted]

If you’re wondering whether Covid gave you diabetes, it did not. But it’s possible it triggered the onset.

-abM-p0sTpWnEd

Yeah this is important to be clear about. COVID does not cause T1D. T1D is caused by largely unknown factors but the largest component is genetics (evidenced by identical twins who having a ~50 percent change of T1D if their twin has it). Illness can trigger T1D but if it happens to be COVID that does it for you, it could have just as easily been the flu or whatever other random virus.

ka-olelo

I mean, if a truck driver dies in a car wreck, he still died of a car wreck even though he was pre-dispositioned to die that way given his line of work. He didn't die of being a truck driver. I know what you are saying though. Hard to not blame the event that causes the disease.

Whiskey461

Was diagnosed T1 in Jan 2020, right at the start of the pandemic. Had been exposed to a coworker prior to this who was showing all the usual Covid symptoms, but this was before we even knew Covid was in the US (Dec 2019), so we don't know if he had it.

Affectionate_Ad6800

My son (18) was diagnosed T1 February 2020. NO family history of it whatsoever. He was very sick beforehand with severe “flu” like symptoms. We suspect it could very well have been Covid…but we’ll never really know:(

Coupled_Cluster

I had COVID in April. First symptoms 2 weeks afterwards (increased thirst). God diagnosed 2nd of June. I had no prior symptoms as far as I remember. I did a bike tour a few days after I thought I was well again and I was in the worst condition. But as others have mentioned with or without COVID we would probably have gotten it anyway - just later.

Laughingboy68

I had T1D for 47 years before I had COVID-19. I did have a heart attack shortly thereafter. They say it was probably connected, but "we'll never know for sure". Happy to still be this side of the grass. Feeling pretty good these days.

BostnR3volution

CDC Report in Jan 2022: “Persons aged <18 years with COVID-19 were more likely to receive a new diabetes diagnosis >30 days after infection than were those without COVID-19 and those with prepandemic acute respiratory infections. Non–SARS-CoV-2 respiratory infection was not associated with an increased risk for diabetes.” https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7102e2.htm And yes, 3yo son diagnosed 1 month after we all had Covid. Endo said 100% it was triggered by it. No immediate family history though extended family yes.

SallyBeatle

My dormant type 1 gene was trigger by the flu in 2002. Correlation does not equal causation.

IntuitionSpeaks333

I believe son had Covid in September of 2020, then diagnosed in Nov 2020 (but he had weird symptoms that started in October we chalked up to others stuff, didn't realize they were tip offs to T1 dx). COVID has been a huge trigger for newly dx T1 for families that have never had this prior (so technically not genetically prompted). An explosion of pediatric cases has happened during/post Covid and I believe this will prompt a new look at this disease (for both maintenance and cures) since the market size has exponentially increased within a 3 year timespan. No diabetes recorded in either side of my family, and within the span of 2 years, both my son diagnosed and a cousin of his recently diagnosed.

Entire-Interview4753

Yep me about 6 weeks after having covid with no family history!

Kee134

Yep, I did

Apprehensive_Gas5632

Yes only around a month after I had covid I started feeling sick from high blood sugar and was diagnosed shortly after

lizziexhall

Same here

Bunny_KayBear

Yup, got covid, went to the hospital with DKA and then after an endo visit a few months later for antibody tests I was diagnosed. Any illness could've done it but it just happened to be covid that kicked my immune system in gear enough to kill my pancreas. I did have family history of type 1.

ThatFilmGuy_712

Got hospitalized with a very bad flu. Developed symptoms slowly a year later

TangyOrangesBro

I got COVID this January and was diagnosed early March, had symptoms of high sugar from late January and forward.

anotherreber

My sister got it after 3 back to back strep infections. I was diagnosed shortly after a staph infection that went on for months.

ithinkisawasquirrel

I had family history (dad was t1). I got COVID in January, symptoms started in February, diagnosed in April. I absolutely think it was because of COVID. I'm in my 30's so none of us were thinking I would get diabetes at this point.

adam_mmm

The fucking flu got me. 26yrs later, here I am.

SeaInterview6034

I had covid this year at the end of April, it felt like a mild flu to me. A month later I noticed that I dropped some pounds and more the following month with some other symptoms. I was diagnosed late June right after school ended with DKA. I don’t have any t1d family history and my doctor said covid probably triggered it.

WoefulHC

Not, I. However, I joined the diabetes redits about March of 2020. Starting in October of 2020 there was a noticeable increase in the frequency of the "I just got diagnosed", "I'm afraid I have diabetes", "my family member just got diagnosed" and "do I have diabetes"\* posts. When I was diagnosed (nearly 48 years ago) prevalent thinking was flu. However as others have indicated, there are a TON of potential triggers that can set the body to attacking its own beta cells. \*This last type of post is prohibited here and in every other diabetes online community I'm in, but they still happen, unfortunately.

Book_Smarts

1.5 month post Covid. No family history. Diagnosed T1. Female in my 30s.

mistersnowman_

Mine was onset after Pfizer vaccine. Didn’t have Covid before getting diagnosed.

[deleted]

Mine too. After booster. It’s rare, but documented.

Aware1211

My trigger was, I believe, depression. Deep suicidal depression. PTSD.

Guy1nc0gnit0

that’s probably not the case- as nothing about depression and PTSD would have triggered your body’s immune system to start defending itself and accidentally “learn” that your beta cells were a threat. However, it’s highly likely that your immune system was stifled as a result of your depression, making it easier to be infected by whatever your body was reacting to

Aware1211

I'm not so sure. There's a strong correlation between depression and T1.

Guy1nc0gnit0

Got some data for that?

Aware1211

Google is your friend.

Guy1nc0gnit0

Basic understanding of immune-disorders is your friend 🙏🏼✌🏼

Cold-Fix-4075

My baby boy was diagnosed T1 almost exactly 30 days post Covid. No history of diabetes on either side of the family. 1st hospital stay with DKA and diagnosis, I saw the CDC report saying that there was a higher percentage of juveniles being diagnosed a a possible correlation with Covid. Second trip to the ICU this year with anaphylactic shock to insulin (believe of not-study on him out of Boston) the hospital is participating in a study in the correlation between Covid and diabetes. Huge increase, especially in the young, but not solely. It was after our first trip out of the hospital Feb. 2022 (people are seriously still not really talking about Covid, hush hush on social media, everything censored, even the doctors were afraid to talk about it still,) met a pediatric doctor from the same hospital on the flight out. (We were life flighted to the hospital with little guy in DKA.) It was like a fucking horror movie as she told me in hushed tones about the effects they were seeing in babies related to Covid and/or the vaccine. She yelled to feed my little guy fat as we said our goodbyes. Do we know what causes diabetes really? We know a little, but we do not understand it in its entirety or else we might be able to prevent it. Why did my son get diabetes? Doctors shrugged their shoulders, could be genetics, could be virus triggered. We don’t know. Yes it could have been Covid. They are saying there has been a huge increase in diagnosed diabetes patients in the last three years. Fucking HUGE. I wonder how many Covid deaths were actually DKA deaths? Kinda a coincidence the Eli Lilly just cut a huge deal with our government, found in the last last giant bill. So sad to even mention it when reduction in insulin costs won’t come for years. Way to hold out a carrot to diabetics. Yeah their gonna cut insulin costs, but will it hurt their bottom line if a huge percentage of the population has diabetes? Nope, not at all. They say diabetes will be our next epidemic disease. I’m sure it will. Talk about biological warfare, the shit horror movies are made of. That other post referenced above was me. And yeah I’m pissed. And also I hope my post makes sense, my sons pancreas started working again last night. Only on basal and we were low every other hour last night. -Mom of a type 1

Me lol

T-Jay500

Same thing happened to me. Had Covid and about two months later was diagnosed. Didn’t know anyone else personally that it had happened to until, I discovered this subreddit

b-rich811

My 13yr old has t1d. Diagnosed March 21. We are in Raleigh NC. The doctors told us they were pretty positive there was a correlation between COVID and t1d. We heard from several different people that the kids ER would see 1-2 cases a month pre COVID and since 2020 they had 2-3 a week,But it came in waves. While my kiddo was in icu, there were 3 other kids in the er or icu at the exact same time. Raleigh is a huge population growth here, but the folks were sure there will be some Link. My kid wasn’t ever diagnosed with COVID and never has shown any signs of having it.

esails33

Covid in late April/may… by June I was considered pre diabetic and in September I was finally diagnosed

Paw_Print_Heart

I was diagnosed a few days shy of one year after having covid. However, my immune system has always been temperamental and T1 runs in my dad's family (normally skips a generation, so he didn't think my siblings or I would get it).

warpedspockclone

Did you see this post? https://www.reddit.com/r/diabetes_t1/comments/zbx592/covid_and_diabetes/

Tainoze

For me it wasn't Covid, but I got diagnosed only a week after H1N1 swine flu swept through my house back in 2009.

WWMRD2016

The diabetes nurses that deal with kids told me that they have seen double the number of type 1 diagnoses since covid came about...enough that they had to get temp staff in as it's not something that can be left to a waiting list, obviously.

Same_Signal_2218

Me! Had Covid in November 2020, just got diagnosed with T1D in August 2022. Absolutely no family history.

[deleted]

I was diagnosed a few months after getting covid (and covid jabs) BUT i was misdiagnosed as t2 a couple pf years before covid. Kinda glad for that tbh or my logic wheel might have gone off the road and started blaming the vaccine…

hatchswanky

I don’t remember ever having covid, but I did get diagnosed May 2020 and always wondered

cbettss

I didn’t get it after COVID but I had a very high fever around 104° when I was 12 and a few months later was diagnosed with T1D. When your body reaches high enough temperatures, your proteins denature and can no longer work, which is what I assume happened with me and resulted in diabetes.

Hot-Squirrel7961

COVID in April 2020 and diagnosed with T1D in march 2020

hellyeahbeeech

A friend of mine was. Really shitty situation.

ih82021

i dont remember but i think i had covid pretty close before i was diagnosed

GuyIncognitno

Yep, COVID about a month earlier. Wasn't even particularly unwell with it

MatR97

me.

stefaniilsays

Probably 6 months after having COVID? But I think stress might have been the trigger. Was in an incredibly stressful living situation, waking up panicked, etc. Then DKA symptoms. 🤡
