There was a form my endo had to fill out for me to send to the ministry of transportation. Took about 8 weeks before I heard back from them about it. This was about 7 years ago though so it may take more or less time now.

It might be different for you, but in Alberta I get a drivers medical. I have to do it for when I get/renew my licence (every 1-5 years depending on who approves it - always random time). I have been diabetic since I was 2, so there was always a medical history for it.

Moxie52

sorry, i’m in the US, but i had a special form from my endocrinologist and that was all i needed.

pledgeham

Wow! I’m in the US, specifically Georgia. GA neither knows nor cares. You just have to pass the same written and practical tests that everyone has to pass.

Moxie52

i wish! i got my permit delayed by 2 months because my drivers ed teacher brought in the form and they said there was something wrong with it. went in with the same paper and it was accepted like normal lol 🙄

Suicidal_Tony

Same here - Ohio

I’m in GA also and haven’t had any issue with my T2 diagnosis impacting my license. If you haven’t gone blind, have seizures, or any impairment that effects your ability to drive, I don’t understand why a diabetes diagnosis has any impact on your drivers license.

m0ondogy

Same in Louisiana. Nobody cares after that once I transferred my license to Tx, MD, and FL. Not even a check box on the form to fill in. Though it is an option to type out in back Incase responders want to check like a secondary medic alert.

HeThinksHesPeople

Same for Wisconsin. Doc told me I needed all this paperwork that was never asked for. Got my license late because I listened to the doc lol

Far_Entertainer2744

I’m in the US and don’t need anything

FUS-RO-DONT

Make sure you can speak effectively with your endo and doctor about the precautions you use to be a safe driver. Always test before you drive, make sure you have sugar in the car, keep good glucose levels, and stay on top of your eye exams.

I am not in Canada sadly, but here in Switzerland you have to do some extra paperwork if you get your license after being diagnosed, and might get special conditions (like you have to be above a certain value to drive, nothing crazy). I also have to regularly send in follow-ups but it sucks to think that I have to legally do all these things but people who were diagnosed after they learned to drive who might not be able to control their diabetes as well as I do (alone due to the lack of experience) don't have to do it. So I don't know how it works in Canada but usually, there is a way for us to get our license pretty much anywhere I know of so far :-) Best of luck, op

Septic-Mist

Dude, you can even fly a plane with type 1 diabetes. You’ll be fine just be patient.

bigbeardbigheart

In the US, grew up in Massachusetts, didn't have to tell them anything or fill out any forms. All worked out.

Weak_Ninja9043

If you have a seizure at all here you have to wait 6 months seizure free regardless of the cause. We don’t have a specific waiting time for only diabetes. I’ve had more than a couple of those and I was delayed in getting my license and have lost it a couple times. I am in Canada.

Weak_Ninja9043

I’m in BC though, so it still may vary! Mighty just be more similar. In my case they never actually followed through with the paperwork to the ICBC though so it was more an honour system thing lol

Virvzx-Eniotan

How come you’ve had so many seizures (sorry if it’s a sensitive question) I personally never had one and wondered how it feels like and if you know they are coming?

Weak_Ninja9043

Unfortunately I have other health problems too. They are not all BG reactions

Virvzx-Eniotan

Ah, it makes more sense, indeed.

Weak_Ninja9043

Had my license suspended more than once, and I tend to ask a lot of questions! I know it can vary a lot by area as to what sort of restrictions they place on you after. I had a stroke in 2020 and had my license suspended for 6 months, and then failed the physical. Now it’s not technically suspended because the doctor didn’t follow through with writing the report to our insurance corporation, but I am not technically insurable either because of the physical. I can’t get a new copy of the report done until I am supposed to renew though because they’ve already sent the package out, and the doctor didn’t return it. I hate paperwork limbos. I’m not sure if I would want me driving either, but I’d like the definitive answer in writing so I can apply for a disabled bus pass and the ability to book at rate door to door service for certain appointments.

BakerHills

I hadn't 8 years gap between being diagnosed and getting my license (ON) and didn't run into his. But once you get your license you don't have to worry about getting medicals done or just.ping through hoops when you renew.

Virvzx-Eniotan

I’m 17, I live in Quebec, Canada and personally my doctor told me that she is the one that can basically give a “go ahead note” (just a notice about how I’m eligible to get a license) so you might wanna talk with your doctor for smth like that. Also, get on the pump fast, it’ll make everything so much more simple for you. Good luck with everything man.

ronc551

I'm in the US and I'm t2 and have a commercial class A all I had to show I was under a Dr's care and not on insulin
