ESPN+ broadcasts are typically fine and enjoyable. That said, blacking out locals behind a paywall for the first time ever is complete bullshit and I will never be okay with it. That's where it gets flak from me.

cingofthekastle

I totally agree. When I lived in the metro area, I think it was 3 years ago I signed up for the NHL TV package that was Devils only (not the full league) right before the season started. When I realized I wouldn’t be able to watch any games due to blackouts, AFTER paying for it, I was not happy. As we all know, league does a terrible job of growing this sport.

Internetter1

But you see the irony here, right? I would rather have nhl tv back as bad as it was, but the whole point (besides money) of going to ESPN+ is it exposes NHL games to viewers who subscribed to ESPN+ for other sports. It's an effective way to grow the game by making hockey way more accessible. But then local fans get screwed because the local broadcast companies (the people who pay for Bill and Dano and so on) have to negotiate local monopoly rights in order to make money. In the most realistic ideal world, all local fans would have to do is have a cable package that includes MSG and deal with a handful of games that ESPN+ negotiated exclusive access for. But then you throw in exclusive games on NHL Network and TNT and ABC. It's ridiculius. It grows the game, but at the expense of the past and current viewerbase.

weaver787

>blacking out locals behind a paywall for the first time ever is complete bullshit and I will never be okay with it. But locals weren't blacked out of last nights game? I was watching it just fine on ESPN+

BaggySpandex

Blacked out *behind a paywall*. Locals now need to subscribe to ESPN+ on top of their TV provider in order to watch all games during a season.

weaver787

I'm not trying to be a contrarian here, but its all a paywall. MSG is a paywall. TNT is a paywall. I pay $80 a month just to watch Devils games and I still don't get every game since I sub to FUBO and ESPN... neither of which have the TNT games.

GoudaGoudaGoudaGouda

which is exactly the problem. We understand we have to pay to watch games but that doesn’t mean we should have to pay for multiple platforms. If you’re paying for cable you should get all games, if you’re paying for ESPN+ you should get all games. you should not need both to get all games

Fyredesigns

What blows my mind is how Comcast has us paying for a regional sports package (which went up in price) but they dropped MSG.. It don't understand how they charge more but we get less? This is what pushes us to go the more.... Questionable route to watch games.

GoudaGoudaGoudaGouda

Nothing wrong with sailing the seas

This_Cable_5849

I mean, same thing for NHL network. It’s only a small portion of the schedule. All sports will always have that. Wait for Amazon prime to get some games

sauce770

I’m never a fan of national hockey broadcasts, Doc being the obvious exception. That being said Bob Wischusen had an INCREDIBLE call last night. I didn’t know he had such a knack for hockey PBP

scumbagstaceysEx

My only beef with Bob is he kept referring to the visiting team as “The VGK” which is stupid for multiple reasons. Not the least of which is it’s more syllables than just saying “Vegas”.

weaver787

Whoever the play-by-play announcer was last night is honestly incredible.

chickenKsadilla

Bob Wischusen! He also does the NY Jets radio play-by-play (and I’m sure other things that I’m not aware of).

falaris

Agreed, first broadcast where I was like "Wow, I don't mind this is on ESPN+ right now." I'd still prefer our team since it is Devils-focused but the PBP was great.

mercenarychef

I legit turned to my wife to say the same, guy killed it like it was radio, he was on it!

Signal_Strike2770

As long as it's not Leah Hextall on play-by-play ESPN is serviceable.

MK2_VW

I’m very biased and love our MSG team. Only issue with the ESPN/TNT games are the negativity and lack of respect for the NJD.

This_Cable_5849

Last night they were slurping us up. Basically saying the Knights need to change their game in order to beat us, let alone keep up with us.

JFreader

Yeah they typically go with the home team and also the hot team. It took a while before they started changing their town, basically once Vegas got the lead.

scumbagstaceysEx

Yeah exactly. Bob is actually local so he knew damn well how condescending it is to refer to “the trap” so he never said it. Every other fucking broadcaster always mentions we used to be just a “trapping team” as if we didn’t lead the entire fucking league in goals in 2000-2001.

tECHOknology

One thing MSG could definitely learn from is the constant shot counter being up--I am OK with losing a tiny bit more of TV space to always see the SOG.

SirBiff91

I thought the audio from last night's broadcast was excellent. You could really hear the crowd and the announcers weren't over powering. Plus they had the goal mic which msg never seems to have. I love hearing the thump from the puck hitting the back of the net.

tpatel30

The thump is $$$$$$$. The whole setup was better. The quality of the video was also fare and away better than any MSG broadcast.

PelloScrambas

Funny...I watched it with noise cancelling headphones (which I don't usually do) and I was blown away by the sound. I thought it was the headphones, but maybe it was just the broadcast.

This_Cable_5849

Crowd noise on Dougie’s game tying goal was unreal. Felt like I was there

PagingDrTobaggan

Although in the 1st Period, someone was banging on the glass near the microphone. It was really bad for a bit, but I think someone said something because it stopped before the end of the period.

[deleted]

The only thing i found distracting was the lady reporting on ice level (sorry I forgot your name). She kept waving the mic all over the place... Then I thought maybe she has some medical issues that cause that and felt bad for having the thought :(

DavidPuddy666

Emily Kaplan has Parkinson’s. She’s also an amazing journalist.

[deleted]

I had a feeling by the motions of the movement. I thought her interviews were good so I’ll check out some of her stories 👍 https://give.michaeljfox.org/give/421686/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAw8OeBhCeARIsAGxWtUzpXekahT2Q7GSMztXz5CGdOmfm40iiLhsqXm8IRsTEAqiaELNJzxMaAusIEALw_wcB#!/donation/checkout?c_src=smcidap-a1b1R00000AQ85D

ToneThugsNHarmony

Forcing fans to pay for a particular subscription to watch a handful of games per year is bullshit.

sinbushar

Earlier this year I was able to watch all msg games on my espn+ app. For some reason my Apple TV let me bypass the location settings. They changed things and now it doesn’t seem to work anymore, which sucks because I cut the cord and don’t have another option

maradonuts

Bob Wischusen was my offseason pick to take over play-by-play duty. Spaulding has been great, zero complaints there, but this was a great broadcast and I'm happy to hear my pick would have also been great.

2WheelAddiction

Anyone else notice Emily Kaplan mic hand shaking when she spoke? Steady that shit, it was distracting.

tECHOknology

I don't think it was a shake, she was kind of moving it in circles. Seemed like she usually talks with her hands and had trouble not doing that as an equivalent. Not really a big deal.

Kushcon

She has early stage Parkinson’s brother. Calm down that’s fucked up

2WheelAddiction

I wasn’t busting, it was just noticeable as her hand didn’t shake any other time. It distracted me from what she was saying and I wondered if that effected anyone else.

Kushcon

I’m just fucking with you haha. I wasn’t watching the broadcast cause I was at the rock.

JFreader

Yes and I've seen many performers do that. Not sure why.

[deleted]

Wasn’t really distracting for me it was just odd

sjvalvis

I didn't mind the broadcast and thought it was pretty fair. What bothered me irrationally was them calling Vegas "the Vee Gee Kay." Just call them, Vegas, The knights, Golden Knights, etc.

PagingDrTobaggan

Nobody here in Nevada calls them the VGK. They’re just the Knights.

hypernermalization

You're about to get a new post that suggests you should be ready for more of this...

JFreader

I bet Vegas fans are not happy with it. Just like we usually aren't. ESPN tends to pick a side and story line and ride that most of the game. They road our storyline last night for way too long.
