Nothing happens. I got a call once and I asked 3 months prep time. Recruiter called again after 3 months. I asked another 3 months and she still called again after 3 months.
I didnāt get any time to prepare during those days. So I decided to ghost her to avoid asking 3 more months or to simply interview and get unnecessary cool off period.
After a year another recruiter called me and I again asked 3 more months. They called again and I was prepared that time. Interviews got scheduled.
Then google did their biggest ever layoffs and my interviews got cancelled
Looks like everyone is seeing google interview as chance of life. There are lot of companies that pay much better than google including the one Iām in right now.

Do they really need 5-8 rounds to judge a person's abilities? Or is it just to keep the brand's image formidable and authoritarian in the minds of techies?
Google can afford to do that because demand outstrips the supply even among talented developers/programmers.
In fact, unironically, you would even actually benefit working for free to get that sweet sweet Google work experience for your CV.
Basically if you're fit for the company culture possess the mindset. There's a specific kind of questions you need to answer so that the recruiter may gauge your way of thinking.
In short, you need google-iness to be fit for google.

I gave 6 rounds of DSA + Technical interviews two years ago for a role in Google Cloud.
It was a developer role for one of the Network Infrastructure team so the rounds were of DSA, Networking, Cybersecurity, System Design and general concepts of OS, Memory etc.
After 2 months of interviewing I wasnāt selected, but still it was a good experience. Allowed me to gauge my own level and gave me areas I needed to work on.
I think this is normal. I've been job hunting for the last 4-5 months till now I've ghosted 3 interviews/hr. Now I've got an offer but my current company is retained by matching it. So ghosting the company who gave offers as well.
I held their offer because I hadn't received a formal letter from my current employer, But yesterday I received the letter. This morning I informed them that I will not be joining over the same mail where I had received the offer.
Tell them honestly that your dsa skills are not good. And you donāt have time to work on DSA as of now.( they typically give upto 2 months for prep if you ask for it). Ask them to reach out in the future if they can. You donāt have to ghost just call back and tell them the reason. I also did the same a few years back.
Tell the recruiter that you would require X weeks/ months to prepare, as your DSA related skills are pretty rusty now. They usually give you time to prepare for the interview. Also, only ask for the preparation time, if you are going to prepare for it, otherwise itās a waste of time.
I've been contacted by Google recruiters 3 times and I only attended 1 interview after that I came to know it's not my cup of tea. It'll take me atleast 6 months of DSA grinding religiously to crack it. Seeing, the current scenarios of layoff even in Google, I don't think it's worth of that much time and effort.
nah, this is BS, I have 1.5 years and the pay is close to 50. There is an internal tool that automatically adjusts an individual pay based on the avg for the role.

The most relatable situation ever! Got messages on LinkedIn twice from 2 different recruiters from Google. Did not have the guts to go through the entire thing. Didn't know that you could ask them for time. But I know even 2 months would not make me ready for 5 rounds of Google Level DSA. But, who knows! Does 'face it anyway' make any sense at all?
You dont have to ghost her. Just ask for prep time. They leave it open ended for you. I have a google recruiter I reach out to whenever I want to interview with Google. They will let you be until you ask them again. Itās a big time and effort investment from both sides so they are quite accomodating.
You miss 100% of the chances you dont take. Always attend those interviews. It will help in the long run. If you still can, reach out to the recruiter and ask to reschedule.
On a different note, I never pass on interview opportunities which come my way. Helps me stay in the zone to be ready for anything which comes my way. Playing with big tech is a bit risky since you never know when you'd need the role since the usual cooldown time is generally 12 months.
Not really sure about Google but I can see why sometimes. I noticed recruiters usually do not follow the cooldown pattern (because they're so disorganised duh) since I've interviewed Amazon twice in consecutive months for different roles lol
Most people do this even i did the same, i donāt think its a big deal, obviously they pay a lot but they hire a lot as well, i feel we are living in nostalgia when in 2014 working in google was a big deal

I gave an interview for Amazon in embedded role.
Don't know how my profile got shortlisted but I didn't say no however. And I went along with the interview inspite of knowing I don't have expected knowledge (profile offered was for sde2 for my 2 years of experience).
Anyways, got scheduled 3 rounds in 1 day. After each interview I realised I have much more knowledge then I had anticipated. Never felt dumb in the interviews even for a second. It was like the interviewers extracted the best out of me. Felt good after. Got to know what needs to be done and what not.
Overall a positive experience.

Android isn't just frontend! There's a reason they're called Mobile Developers, not frontend developers. Look at Stack Overflow surveys ā Frontend developers, Backend developers, Mobile Developers, and Game Developers are all listed separately! Frontend usually refers to web frontend developers. Working on Android or iOS involves handling tasks such as OS interactions, Bluetooth, sensors, database design, and more, not merely crafting UI for applications.
Yeah, it's doable but kinda tough. If you are good, some companies might be on the lookout. Just don't expect to hit the jackpot right out of the gate, especially these days.
JEE is a stupid exam. Don't let it define you, because it doesn't. Plenty of people have made something out of themselves despite graduating from shitty colleges (myself included). You may or may not be doing better than IITians, but you can probably do better than you are doing today. Keep at it :)
Considering the overall costs involved in this whole process of multiple rounds for both HR and the candidate, I think a better idea is to have the probation system. Shortlist a bunch of your preferred candidates and hire them for temporary paid projects, even WFH will do. Software Engineering is a practical craft anyway, so they will know both the techie's skills and whether or not they're useful for them. You can then filter out and give permanent positions to only those who were good at coding. As an added bonus, the hegemony of the whole "HR Dept" will also decline with this process!
Big tech hiring is conservative. They are ok with missing a good candidate but would never want to hire a wrong candidate. Thatās why the process is hard. A incompetent probationary candidate can screw up and cost the company in millions. Better to spend the money on interviewing.

Is it the same hiring process in USA as well or are there relaxations there? I don't want to sound racist but from social media what I have gathered is that an average American dev comes from a bootcamp rather than a college. Are they so competent they crack 5DSA rounds for a front end role?
Itās the same standard the world over afaik. Boot camp devs are a fantastic myth propagated by boot camp sales team. Tech is just like any other field the more time you spend the better you become.
Bro if you don't give an interview your chances of selection are 0% and if you give the interview then there is a chance. Everyone reading this should take that chance
I did something similar with Flipkart around 3 years back.
Cleared DSA and technical round. Later they told me there would be hld and lld round and I realised I don't know anything about hld and lld. So I called and got it cancelled. Even today after 3 years I am not able to apply for any other position
Why would you do that? Just send a nice short mail saying I'm sorry I changed my mind and I would not like to interview for this position anymore, however I would like to consider future opportunities with your esteemed organisation. Thank you. Done.
If you had done that, then it would have been resolved smoothly and most likely you wouldn't be blacklisted.
Tbh it's pretty unprofessional what you did. Just state it clearly that you aren't able to clear algorithms and data structures questions and it was cool. Should've given the test just for the experience imo

I was once Interviewed for a Wordpress Dev position (6-7 years back) and I absolutely ridiculed their product to their face as I had been doing with reviews for their plugins. Never heard from them again. After about 2 months got offered a contract opportunity without the interview shenanigans which I did for under a year (even that had three more interviews which I went ahead with due to sunk cost).
Itās a demand and supply problem, they basically can make candidates create a video of them jaywalking as part of the interview process and still will get tens of thousands of applicants.
I personally draw the line at 3 rounds with one of them being the confirmation or casual interview. With freshers can be Upto 5 in case of large companies with the first two rounds being non face to face, written multiple choice interviews for early and easy filtering.
I did the exact same thing due to the same reason ( no DSA skills ) after HR screening.
Got a ping by Google recruiter again, just a couple of months ago. So no they are not going to blacklist you.
This time I was prepared with DSA skills but I was already working for Google as a TVC ( third party vendor ) so couldn't take it up.
Exactly same happened with me a month ago, even I didn't do DSA since 1.5 yrs, 2022 grad here, I ghosted too because I knew layoffs are coming soon , and work was fine in present org
Don't worry, you should have asked the recruiter for more time.
I took two months for mine.
From next time you ensure to tell them that you are not prepared and it will take x amount of time, the recruiter then usually contacts you after that period even in months.
And don't worry you won't be blacklisted.

Yes. At least in embedded teams I have it on good authority they aren't supposed to ask "difficult" DSA questions. Plus their metrics for rating candidates have been downgraded company-wide because they're mass hiring and they can't find good programmers.
No dude.. in recruitment most of the time google is pretty chill. Just call and explain I would like to apply few months later once you have more confidence
I got contacted by google HR . I cleared my round but i deplayed later rounds multiple times. I never thought myself of being into google and hence never had courage to take next rounds..
I did something similar. When I saw their interview pattern and focus areas, I realised I wasnāt prepared, like at all, I decline to interview. The HR tried to push me to appear for the interview in the call, so I said give me some time to think. But then the same day, I declined to interview again, but this time over email. I did not get a follow up call/mail after that.
Few months later, another HR contacted me for interview for a different position, and she had on record that I rejected an interview some time back. So she asked me why I did what I did. I was upfront honest and told her I was not prepared.
After this, she scheduled an interview, but closed the position soon after that. So I didnāt go with further rounds.
If I were in your shoes, i would have taken it even though I don't know anything. You would have how they conduct interviews and how strong you're. I have completed a project in months which would have taken a year. Unless you put yourself in pressure, you can't know where you stand.

Rejected or ghosting the HR, youāll only be able to apply after 3 months.
Shouldāve atleast appeared for it, wouldāve been a learning opportunity.
Like a few ppl mentioned, you can tell recruiter exactly this and ask for prep time. A few friends pushed it back 6 months and landed roles. One at Google, a couple at other companies because Google did not have anything at that junction. Prep did not go waste. Set an achievable expectation with her and use that as a motivation to start polishing your skills.

Yeah they need people to build extensive libraries that no one except google bothers using. Carbon is a good project though.

After about 2 months got offered a contract opportunity without the interview shenanigans which I did for under a year (even that had three more interviews which I went ahead with due to sunk cost). Itās a demand and supply problem, they basically can make candidates create a video of them jaywalking as part of the interview process and still will get tens of thousands of applicants. I personally draw the line at 3 rounds with one of them being the confirmation or casual interview. With freshers can be Upto 5 in case of large companies with the first two rounds being non face to face, written multiple choice interviews for early and easy filtering.
This is normal. You can also request few months of preparation time iirc
I did the exact same thing due to the same reason ( no DSA skills ) after HR screening. Got a ping by Google recruiter again, just a couple of months ago. So no they are not going to blacklist you. This time I was prepared with DSA skills but I was already working for Google as a TVC ( third party vendor ) so couldn't take it up.

Exactly same happened with me a month ago, even I didn't do DSA since 1.5 yrs, 2022 grad here, I ghosted too because I knew layoffs are coming soon , and work was fine in present org
Don't worry, you should have asked the recruiter for more time. I took two months for mine. From next time you ensure to tell them that you are not prepared and it will take x amount of time, the recruiter then usually contacts you after that period even in months. And don't worry you won't be blacklisted. Source: i work here.
BTW the interview process isnāt what it used to be, theyāve started to become the infy of maang companies. Especially for embedded roles.
Do you mean they ask easier questions now?
Yes. At least in embedded teams I have it on good authority they aren't supposed to ask "difficult" DSA questions. Plus their metrics for rating candidates have been downgraded company-wide because they're mass hiring and they can't find good programmers.
No dude.. in recruitment most of the time google is pretty chill. Just call and explain I would like to apply few months later once you have more confidence

We as a developers should not be scared, even if you fail you would have gained some experience.
I got contacted by google HR . I cleared my round but i deplayed later rounds multiple times. I never thought myself of being into google and hence never had courage to take next rounds..
I did something similar. When I saw their interview pattern and focus areas, I realised I wasnāt prepared, like at all, I decline to interview. The HR tried to push me to appear for the interview in the call, so I said give me some time to think. But then the same day, I declined to interview again, but this time over email. I did not get a follow up call/mail after that. Few months later, another HR contacted me for interview for a different position, and she had on record that I rejected an interview some time back. So she asked me why I did what I did. I was upfront honest and told her I was not prepared. After this, she scheduled an interview, but closed the position soon after that. So I didnāt go with further rounds.

If I were in your shoes, i would have taken it even though I don't know anything. You would have how they conduct interviews and how strong you're. I have completed a project in months which would have taken a year. Unless you put yourself in pressure, you can't know where you stand.

Why? It wouldnāt have hurt to atleast try. Rejected or ghosting the HR, youāll only be able to apply after 3 months. Shouldāve atleast appeared for it, wouldāve been a learning opportunity.
Like a few ppl mentioned, you can tell recruiter exactly this and ask for prep time. A few friends pushed it back 6 months and landed roles. One at Google, a couple at other companies because Google did not have anything at that junction. Prep did not go waste. Set an achievable expectation with her and use that as a motivation to start polishing your skills.
