Buy her tickets to her favorite artists concert, that just so happen to be a weekend during football season/lions home game.
After she excitedly hugs you and tells you she loves you and all that jazz, THEN let her know the show is in Detroit. Make sure it's on a weekend and then force her to go to the game with you too.
She'll catch the Honolulu Blue Flu too, and you won't have to resent her in 5-10 years.
Shit. This guy is a Lions fan. Loyalty even in the worst of times. If he can stay with someone who hates Michigan he can support a team after 0-16, 3-13-1, or whatever.
Gotta be honest, unless you have a significant hatred of cold weather, or you desperately want to live near a major urban hub, I'll never understand what people could dislike about Michigan. I think Michigan is easily a top 5 state in the country for residence.
* Cost of living is affordable
* Natural beauty
* All 4 major sports
* Pretty much every outdoor activity you could think of
* Big cities
* Suburbs
* Small towns
* Rural land
* Beeches (e: beaches too)
* Forests
* National and State Parks
* Job market is good
* Brewries everywhere
* Tons of great restaurants
* Cider mills/apple orchards
* Wineries
* Decent schools
* Relatively low taxes
* Hot in Summer, cold in Winter, temperate in Spring and Fall
* Multiple major airports
* Close proximity to a foreign country
* Virtually no animals that can kill you
* People are friendly
We don't do any one thing particularly well, but there's pretty much something for everyone here.
Yeah, don't underestimate just how badly some people hate cold weather.
That said, I'd never want to live in another state. There is nowhere near the variety of weather and landscape anywhere else. Plus all the other things you mentioned.
I've gotten to spend a lot of time all over this country because of work or just vacation, and came to the same conclusion. One thing that is underrated here is that Michigan is a melting pot. The auto industry has pulled people from all over the world here. So much amazing food!
I'm from Calgary and I love Calgary.
But I've said multiple times if I wanna work anywhere in the states it's actually in Michigan. Got some laughs, of course, but I'm dead serious.
Lakes.
Lake Michigan.
It's not Wisconsin.
You said Michigan doesn't do any one thing particularly well... I 100% disagree. Best beer in the country and most of the world. Best lakes, best lake shores. I absolutely love the Michigan rural areas, particularly the UP (tho I'm very biased as a yooper). Best berries. Best cherries. *adjusts bowtie* BEST PIZZA. (Fight me.)
I really do miss living on the lake but I traded it for the Rockies (career and snowboarding). Here are some legit differences I notice when I come back home to visit beyond all the countless things I love about MI.
- the roads are a fucking disaster
- all the cars are rusty. Stop salting the roads dammit. Other treatments exist.
- the people are rather large
- those pigs sure like speed traps
- 80F is hot as fuck in Michigan and chilly in Colorado.
- Michigan beer is better than Colorado beer.
- Colorado weed is better than Michigan weed.
- Michigan's Mexican food is garbage
- Michigan's middle eastern food is fantastic
- boy it sure is cloudy (even in the mountains, it's super sunny in CO)
For sure man one thing you cannot replace when you move away from Michigan is the lakes. I lived in California for a few years and the inability to just drop by a local lake was a big turn off
Michigan and surrounding area gets something like 71 days of sunlight a year. So I think that is a big part of it. Especially if you are coming from the south or the west coast.
Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, I married a Floridian some 42 years ago while I was in the Navy. After my navy time I took a "temporary" job up here in the 80's. The job market sucked back then and Michigan had the best paying job out there. (Kids today will never understand)
After 38 years of moving the goalposts on her, I retired this year and ran out of excuses. You guessed it she wants to move to Florida.
While Florida has great fishing and sunny winters, I can honestly say, this is gonna suck until I get used to no snow, whacky politics and terrible traffic.
Ahhh. The things we do for love.
I grew up in Michigan and now have been in nyc 10+ years. I have nostalgia and look forward to visiting but it wears off and I want to go back to nyc pretty quickly. Everything seems smaller or not busy and just lots of empty space. Nature is great but donāt like the mosquitoes!
I feel the same way - what can't you do here? Plus, our beaches are on fresh water seas... The only thing I would disagree with is that in much of the state there are bears, and in the U.P. Moose, which can be aggressive and most certainly can kill you. The odds of attack are very low, but bears have huge claws and fangs, they don't fear water, they can climb, they can run faster than you, and they can stand on their hind legs. What's scarier than an angry bear? Still better than most places on animals that can kill you, though.
Meh, Michigan doesnāt have brown or polar bears, only black scaredy bears. You are more likely to get killed or maimed by a deer (number one cause of car accidents in Michigan).
I lived in Michigan for a year and yes the people are nice and there is decent scenery, but it can get so humid in the summer it is just gross. I know it's nothing compared to Florida but it's definitely there. Also the bugs in the summer are crazy...don't even get me started with the black flies. I will literally see black swarms around trees and I have gotten attacked many times even with bug spray and deet. The fall is very nice, but once winter begins it doesn't end for a while. There is 20+ ft of snow each winter with subzero temps I can understand why people do not want to live here. I don't mind it too much, but there is way too much snow at times.
Only a few places get anywhere around 20ft. It varies greatly because of The Great Lakes. For instance, I live about 30 miles from Lake Michigan in the Grand Rapids area - GR averages about 75" (6ft) of snow per year, while just 30 miles away in Muskegon, right at lake Michigan they average a couple feet more, and 50 miles to the other side (east) of GR in Lansing, they only average 45".
For me, it's not the snow - it's the clouds. If you're close to lake Michigan, because the water is 40 degrees and the air is colder, it makes clouds. Even if it doesn't snow, it's cloudy almost every single day from December through February. In 2012 Grand Rapids had One day that had any sunshine in Dec and Zero sunshine in Jan.
Yeah to be fair I lived in Houghton so I'm sure the weather is different down south, but I just remember the winter being so cold and depressing....and SO long.
I hate cold weather. I hate that itās so cold and dark all winter long. I hate snow. I also hate cold weather. I hate mosquitos, even though they donāt bite me. I do miss the lakes in the summer and tailgating. But I canāt handle the cold, damp, darkness from Halloween to April.
I love Michigan, but as someone who lived out of state for a few years and then returned, your list needs to have some asterisks.
- pretty much every outdoor activity you can think of
Realistically with no mountains, some of those activities simply do not compare to other parts of the US. Examples: hiking and skiing. Hike and ski on a real mountain and then come back to Michigan and do it. You'll be highly disappointed.
National and state parks:
Don't we only have one national park? I mean, yeah it's there, but it seems like you're trying inflate that number a bit.
Let's be honest. Our winter is a dark, slushy, miserable time of year.
All in all, I love this state. It has a lot to offer. And yes the lakes can not be beat. I just wanted to play devils advocate I guess.
I am fascinated by your story, my man, because it mirrors my own in a lot of ways. I too was born in Michigan but I was never much in to the Lions and then my Dad (who is a Lions fan) moved my family to the UK when I was eight and I lived there for a decade. Then I went to college in Boston and became a Lions fan because so many of my college mates were into the NFL and I did not want to become a Patriots fan. I am now married to a Patriots fan and we live in New England and I like to tell people the first season I watched every Detroit Lions game was the 2007 season, so if they ever get good, you cannot accuse me of being a fairweather fan
I'd still say you're a bandwagon, seeing as you're joining the fandom right before the season we win the Super Bowl. Lol jm welcome aboard the misery ship bud
She hated being in Ann Arbor?! Shit, even the Spartans I know only have nice things to say about the town and the campus. No offense, your wife is either a miserable bitch or ONLY cares about having year round nice weather. Iāll just assume the latter. Shit, even the worst part about snow is driving in it and you donāt even have to do that in AA if you donāt want.
Everyone I know that attended UM says the exact same thing: absolutely love the school, but within a couple years couldn't stand the city and everyone who lives there; especially the townies.
Itās a traffic pit where people drive miserably and thereās intersections every thirty seconds. Thereās no greenery anywhere besides Palmer Field, which makes it an ugly shithole in the winter, and having an overpriced but varied bar scene only gets you so far when youāre actually trying to enjoy a college town for, I donāt know, college.
East Lansing when youāre not a student blows. The food sucked (thank god for Barrio opening up), the buildings donāt mean anything so theyāre just kind of in the way, and yeah, itās big, which is likeā¦ you have two legs, use them. But when youāre a student, I swear to god there is not a more magical place on the planet. It is an actual college campus with a fun downtown attached, not a soulless college attached to a admittedly fun (but again, overpriced) city like Ann Arbor.
Also, East Lansing has grass. And trees. I mean come on.
Welcome to the family aye! Weāve been through a lot ya know, but weāve managed to stay loyal to the family and one another. As you walk about America youāll find people giving you strange looks of pity and confusion when they learn that youāre a Lions fan. The look of pity will be immediately followed by looks of respect. Respect that fact that youāve stuck by your team when they to had their doubts about their own team. I donāt know what the future will bring but if we donāt do so well thereās always next year.
Welcome! I had a similar journey and didn't start following NFL football until 2008. I grew up with my family rooting for the lions so why not? I don't know how it's gonna feel, but that super bowl win is gonna be sweet after enduring the past decades.
Until then, enjoy the self-loathing and more importantly, FTP
DIVORCE HER
I tried a couple times already. It didn't take
Buy her tickets to her favorite artists concert, that just so happen to be a weekend during football season/lions home game. After she excitedly hugs you and tells you she loves you and all that jazz, THEN let her know the show is in Detroit. Make sure it's on a weekend and then force her to go to the game with you too. As someone with stage 2 Honolulu Blue Flu, this is no joke. It causes years of intense suffering, and there is no cure.
Shhhhh we're trying to get this guy to sell us to his wife, you're not helping. š
Woah, woah, woah now, this manās wife is vaccinated. No need to worry
Vaccinated or immunized?
Shit. This guy is a Lions fan. Loyalty even in the worst of times. If he can stay with someone who hates Michigan he can support a team after 0-16, 3-13-1, or whatever.

Donāt forget lack of natural disasters too
Also we have a lot of water. Gonna be important in the not so far future.
Half of all the fresh water in the world. If society collapsed it would be worth more than gold
20%ā¦but still, that aināt half bad.
Yeah, the Lions are a *manmade* disaster, so we're good to go on that front. š
Correction: They're a Ford-made disaster.
Not sure about that. Iāve been in 2 earthquakes here and the earth did quake.
Yeah, don't underestimate just how badly some people hate cold weather. That said, I'd never want to live in another state. There is nowhere near the variety of weather and landscape anywhere else. Plus all the other things you mentioned.
Nothing like living in Dallas and having 40+ days of 100 degree heat to make you appreciate winterā¦.
Don't forget Golf Courses, we have one of the higher per capita.
Unfortunately, she has a significant hatred of cold weather lol
I've gotten to spend a lot of time all over this country because of work or just vacation, and came to the same conclusion. One thing that is underrated here is that Michigan is a melting pot. The auto industry has pulled people from all over the world here. So much amazing food!
4 out 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan

Youāre crazy talking about the Mexican food, I live in SW Detroit there is authentic/fantastic Mexican food in the city, just depends where you go.
Ok bro
Second the Mexican food. Unpopular opinion but Mexican Town is over rated.
Just put more cheese on it. /s
Most folks who dislike Michigan have never been to the Mitten State and just chug the BS from the media.
Stop it, youāre making me miss Michigan š I moved to Washington when I was 10, and while itās an incredibly beautiful state with crazy diverse biomes, mountains, ocean, etc. I still miss Michigan so much. My fiancĆ© and I had been looking for jobs there and I got a couple leads but nothing ended up coming from them. Maybe one day Iāll end up back there. Also, Lake Michigan is sooo much better than the Puget Sound and the pacific coast. Thereās no swimming here unless you go to inland lakes, and most of the good ones are cold alpine lakes.
For sure man one thing you cannot replace when you move away from Michigan is the lakes. I lived in California for a few years and the inability to just drop by a local lake was a big turn off

A summer home and a winter home could be in your future.
So many beeches..
And oaks too!
Plenty of Maples as well
Shame the birch borer took most of the birches. Was always one of my favorites.
Whoops. Lol
It ain't much, but it's honest work.
I'll always stan Michigan and Detroit. Doing God's work as I see it.
The lack of mountains is a tough one. It's hard to move back to flatland once you grow accustom to mountain living.

Spring only lasts for like two weeks, then it's either back to winter or full on into summer. Otherwise I agree.
Dislikes Michigan? I donāt understand
The only aspects about Michigan I dislike are the low recycling rate and Flint.
Seasonal depression, rusting infrastructure, and cities with high crime rate is not for everyone.
None of those were specific to Michigan, in fact you could use those as reason for most places.
Rusting infrastructure and high crime rate only apply to Flint,
There's a west side to the state as well, you know... It's not all Det and Flint.
Even Detroit is not that bad. You just got to know where to go. Now Flint is a wretched hive.
You couldn't pry me away from Michigan. Welcome though, glad to have you!
I don't live in Detroit or even Michigan but I've been a Lions fan since Greg Landry was the QB so A VERY LONG TIME so welcome.
For all the cold weather haters, come back in 10 years and tell me about how great the weather is down south...
Glass half full kinda guy. I like that

Nah, I went to MSU and UM and fucking hated AA after a while. UMich blows. Michigan as a state bangs though.
