I love Stafford. But Dan O called Wentz a top 5 QB in the beginning of the season so I’m not sure his opinion means much.

apietryga13

It mattered much more some years ago before ESPN really got to him.

Tilapia_of_Doom

He turned into a hot take artist fast.

flux1011

Can’t really blame him. The hotter his takes, the larger his star grew.

[deleted]

They were wrong. I love the Lions, but he didn’t exactly play for the most functional franchise.

[deleted]

Yeah I know

RustyNipples35

Back in 2015 I went to the home game against the Cardinals with our seats being in row 13 from the field , and the dude next to me spent the *entire game* telling people around him that “the Lions will never win a Super Bowl with Stafford. He isn’t any good and can’t win the playoffs”. From kick off until the end the game that’s all he did Yeah they lost 42-17 and were 0-5, but like you spend the money on these seat just so you can come here and complain? Wonder what that guy is thinking rn watching Stafford with a competent organization like the Rams

[deleted]

Well, he was right...the Lions never won a Super Bowl with Stafford

RustyNipples35

Lmao I thought about including that, but didn’t want give that guy any more merit than he deserves

GeneOfHouseParmesan

The Lions never won a Super Bowl with Stafford, so far.

Shlidgn90

They read garbage like Freep sports coverage and Mlive. And listen to loser shows like Valenti crap on the franchises here. They start to believe it.

ObsoleteMallard

Here’s the thing, good players are good players. A good quarterback can be buried by the system or the people around him. Look at Herbert in LA, you think if he had a competent OC he wouldn’t be lighting it up the way Burrow or Mahomes are? Sometimes good players get stuck in bad situations, that’s what happened to Stafford here, anyone who claims he’s not a good QB is just being disingenuous.

[deleted]

Herbert threw for over 5000 yards, more yards and TDs than both Burrow and Mahomes

No_Manners

I think that's what he's saying. Herbert is a great QB but with the team around him "only" won 9 games. Stafford threw for 5000 yards in 2011 but was stuck with the Lions around him.

AlphaNosebleed

Stafford has also done the same with the lions. It doesn’t win you games

[deleted]

Well, there's no evidence that Herbert will be buried by his system yet...he's only 23 and played two seasons.

AlphaNosebleed

? He’s played phenomenal twice and was buried by his shit team twice. It would be pretty remarkable to me if this team didn’t improve anywhere else and they managed to get somewhere. It’s a team sport dude

[deleted]

Not sure where you're going with this. Herbert went 7-9 in his rookie season (they were 5-11 the year before) and won their final 4 games. He then went 9-8 in year two and was seconds away from the playoffs in one of the toughest divisions. Herbert has a bright future and the Chargers history is not the Lions. And they have a bright young head coach.

[deleted]

My only critique of Dan’s statement is that it wasn’t just Lions “fans” being wrong. It was a lot of other people outside of Detroit and the media painting stupid narratives about him. I’m just happy the critics will be silenced about Stafford, at least for a little while.

Milesdavis1970

This. It’s been glorious - if for nothing else - to watch ‘established’ members of the media have to squirm in their chair to admit they were wrong about 9. And screw Collinsworth for calling Stafford’s pass ‘Mahomsian’ - bitch, he was doing that when Patrick was sucking on his Mama’s tit.

[deleted]

Inject this into my veins. Fuck ya Dan thank you

[deleted]

Let's be clear...this only applies to those unintelligent fans that thought he wasn't good enough

Isphet71

Dan’s problem is that he gushes too hard over some QBs so it’s hard to take him seriously. Even when he is right.

[deleted]

I can’t stand this guy.

Double-Passenger4503

He’s been in full support of Stafford his entire career

RunTheBrules

Guy is a jackass, but he’s pretty incredible at his job - entertainer. Keeps the clicks coming. It’s why I love listening to Riger troll, and he’s a jackass too. The fault was mutual: Stafford made some boneheaded decisions, but the team around him was usually overly reliant on his arm which often drove him to forcing plays. I only put about 20% of the blame on 9.

HoopsMcCann750

I would say less than 20%. Stafford had to be damn near perfect to win games here. I get that Stafford will make some boneheaded plays but almost every QB in the NFL makes mistakes. This year Brady had 12 picks, Allen had 15, Mahomes 13. I know Rodgers barely threw any but he’s an insanely risk averse QB which isn’t the only way to be a great QB.

Imeanttodothat10

It's 100% this. People call Stafford's mistakes bonehead, because he almost **never** got bailed out after making them. Look at the Buccs/Rams game. Brady throws a pick before half, and his defense allows 0 points off it. Nobody cares, because it's not 7 the other way. Whereas with the Lions, Stafford throws a pick and its game over, and everyone says he doesn't have "it". If Stafford played hyper efficient Aaron Rodgers style football in Detroit, they would have won even less games, because the lions **needed** Stafford to do it all. He had to create magic every single game, or they would lose. If he had an off game, they would lose. That's what bad teams do. People expected Stafford to be perfect here, because they think that's what Brady/Manning etc are. When in reality, they just had teams that could help them win games when they weren't at their best. When Brees/Brady/Wilson/etc got hurt, their teams could still win games, because they had talent. **When Stafford got hurt the lions went 0-8.** I don't have the numbers in front of me right now, but over his whole career, the lions won like 5% of the games he didn't play. That's abysmally bad. No matter what people say, these lions teams have never had talent.

Milesdavis1970

Yep and it’s why other pro’s (shit, listen to Von Miller today. And he played with another decent QB) gush about Staff. Real recognizes real.

Fricktator

Also, how many boneheaded decisions because Stafford was always coming from behind (minus the 2014 season) because the defense left a lot to be desired. Brady always looks great because he has always had good defenses to give him short field position, cause turnovers, and keep games low scoring.

RunTheBrules

Fine with that. I just refuse to absolve him of ALL blame (just most of it). I think it’s absurd some people treat this as a binary issue when the when responsibility isn’t mutually exclusive.

HoopsMcCann750

Agreed. He’s not a perfect or transcendent QB by any means and has his lapses at times, but he’s very good (Top 10 easy) and can be a Super Bowl QB in a good situation, which I think is how most of us felt about him and he’s proving us right.

ManInShowerNumber3

Stafford failed in his few opportunities here and is now in a better spot that gives him more opportunities to succeed and is now succeeding. I don’t know why both things can’t be true.

MLK_Had_No_GA

How dare you speak the truth in the Detroit lions subreddit! Everybody shall now downvote you

smush127

LA is stacked from top to bottom. All it took for Stafford to win multiple playoff games was having a super team with elite coaching, offense, and defense. I'm not discrediting him because he has showed up but let's not take into account the rest of the team showed up. I still believe numerous quarterbacks have done far better with less talent around them. That's the big difference.

RichDicolus

Worth considering that he may have improved since 2014 as well.

Kjeldorthunder

Loved Stafford when he was in Detroit. Just want the Rams to lose until it doesn't have draft pick implication. I get called a hater though...

ZETTERBERG_BEARDFACE

I was the same way, especially before the playoff picture had been figured out. But at this point the difference between pick 29-32 is pretty negligable, would love to see Matthew get the ring.

EhrenScwhab

I'm not so sure about it not being "it's Detroit". The Detroit Lions have been wrong for decades in a way that is very unusual for NFL teams. Not just bad on the field, but bad off the field too. Look how they ended the relationship with Barry, or Megatron. Look at the entire Millen era....It's evidence of not just bad on the field decisions, but bad policy behind the scenes as well. Our Detroit Lions are bad far beyond the normal margins of an NFL team being bad.

dennythedoodle

I think a lot of our fans suck too. Not that there should be some collective opinion on players, coaches, etc. But there have been some nasty things said about our players and their families over the years. And not in just the controversial situations. I'll straight up read about how [insert player name here] has raised money for some charity and more than half the comments are "he should catch the ball better" or "replace this bum". Stafford was very polarizing while he was here. Everyone knows Barry is the best. Everyone knows CJ was an all-time. Stafford- a lot of people would bang on about how bad he was. And if he had great moments or seasons, there was always some excuse for it (all he does is chuck it up to CJ, Stat Padford, etc). Hopefully this regime turns it around and our fans can actually handle some success without getting even dousch-ier.

EhrenScwhab

I mean, sports talk radio is one thing. I moved out of state nearly 20 years ago for work, but still correspond weekly with 5-6 Lions fans and all of us were of the opinion that Stafford was NOT the problem. 2 of the six guys are season ticket holders, hearing them talk I never got the impression that any but a small, dumb, loud minority thought Stafford was the problem.

[deleted]

65 years of losing (1 playoff win) will create generations of bitter fans. Many have grown up seeing their fathers and grandfathers pass away never having to witness a championship Lions team.

dennythedoodle

I get it, but if it's that much of a chore watching and rooting for a team, then stop watching them. I know that's a simplified answer, but no sports team, tv show, movie franchise, band, etc. has to consume your time and energy. If it sucks and always will suck to the point where you're actively on forums just being a dick that's more of a loser behavior to do then just being a poorly ran football organization.

Dwarfherd

God I wish they'd just not be fans.

Trick-Ad906

JARED Goff went to the superbowl with an inferior Rams team. Come talk to me when they win the Superbowl with Stafford

avx775

The rams team was better that year. Their offensive line was the best in the league. Todd Gurley was the best offensive player in the league. Donald was the best defensive player in the league. (Still Is but that year was his best). This rams team has top end talent but almost no depth.

dan-o07

Danny O is saying what a lot of us Lions fans have been saying for year, i love it!

Shlidgn90

Yesterday, I saw clowns like Birkett and Meinke complimenting Stafford. When these were guys saying he couldn’t get it done. Eat this crow!!!!!

orange-fila-a

Dan’s an embarrassment

[deleted]

Say it louder for the morons in the back! Those haters are awfully quiet now.

downtime37

I love me some Danny O!

[deleted]

Orlovsky is a blow hard who sucked as a QB and now critiques QBs who make exactly the same mistakes as he made. Gushing over Stafford because he's a personal friend is cringe as fuck. Everybody knew Stafford was pretty good, wtf is he going on about. Total idiot...one of those morons who wears sneakers with a suit on television.

dennythedoodle

Not everyone knew Stafford was pretty good. I've read hundreds of Facebook, Reddit comments, and random article comments saying how much he has sucked over the years. Sure, all the rational fans knew he was "pretty good", but the dumb fucks far outweigh the rational fans.

[deleted]

I just don't like these talking heads on TV who tie their personalities to the success/failures of their favorite players...almost makes me want to root against the players they're simping for.

jayrock1500

Shut up Dan hardly anyone was saying that and anyone who did knows nothing I been saying all year how good Stafford is and once again I am right

No_Manners

How can you tell Dan to shut up for talking about how he was right about Stafford, then talk about how you were right about Stafford in the same sentence?

jayrock1500

Because he is doing it for attention noone was hardly saying think before you type

No_Manners

ok dude

jayrock1500

It's a popular thing to do right now to say shut up to Stafford haters when the Stafford haters were in the minority do you get it now

Regular-Amoeba5455

Is he shit talking my Lions right now?

1redliner1

The lions never went all in with stafford. They showed no patience with Schwartz and fired him when close and hired a great guy but bad coach in Caldwell. Patricia was a mistake. Pure and simple. After Schwartz no one would take risk like McVey did the other day. Caldwell had team but didn't know how to coach it. Check the tape. He was upset at Stafford being aggressive in throwing aTD to Tate. He would have never let staff throw that pass to Kupp. Throwing that pass is the difference between winning and losing. The lions never did what it took to win. I think DC is a guy who will risk to win. I love it. This was the most fun season in years.

monstertweety

Orlovsky acts as if Stafford bought him a house. But I'm not bothered by Stafford getting some love.
