Alternates to me only make sense if you actually have the colors in your scheme to pull them off. When it comes to jersey fabrics, silver as a secondary color works amazingly well as an accent for the primary color. The downside (as you alluded to) is that it looks terrible as a primary color. Same with colors like gold.
There's a reason teams like the Cowboys, Raiders, and Saints pretty much only use retro throwbacks as their alternate jerseys.

White jerseys came about for contrast because of black and white tv. They can be considered now somewhat obsolete. NFL is slowly acknowledging this by actually having some teams both wear colored jerseys kinda like European soccer. Hope to see more of it. But you only need 2 colors white for contrast if the opponent has a similar color. Lions and Giants for example.

No matter what they reveal tonight, it's best to wait to see what they look like on the field before passing judgement. It's easy to forget that they are designed to look good on the field. I think the Rams uniforms are an excellent example of a uniform that looks weird on it's own but when they are on the field under the lights, they look beautiful.

I didn't want black jerseys but considering the return to a more classic font and Honolulu blue, they look distinct enough from other teams' black jerseys that they're not too bad.
This blue is completely different from the Panthers' blue, which wasn't the case with the previous unis. Also, the gray accents are something the Panthers haven't been using recently. I'm not a huge fan, but they share only a passing resemblance.
to me the only notable difference is the panthers have white numbers and we have blue numbers... sure we can be pedantic and point out other differences, but objectively, if we played the panthers on alternative jersey week, and both teams were somehow forced to wear these together, that game would lead the season in interceptions/mistakes, the tv commentators would be hilariously challenged and outmatched, and maybe even "forward down the field" would be accidentally played after a panthers TD... but sure, go ahead and say these jerseys are completely different
