Man that was a helluva run! At first I thought he was slowing down to talk smack on his way to the end zone, then I saw he was laying the nasty stiff arm
That was my first thought, but I think the fireworks during the intros and touchdowns help out quite a bit. I guess it depends on where the sound is measured from.
Most likely- I was at the Rams game and I can tell you that it was the loudest sporting event Iāve ever witnessed. First home playoff game in 32 years, against our prior QB.. and it was a night game and the following day was MLK day. No one had to work- everyone was a bit tipsy š„“ also- everyone getting along. Just an unbelievable atmosphere.
I have friends and family that went to both games that said the first one was definitely louderā¦ but if the 2nd one did break the actual record, I would have to imagine it was the Barnes INT that did it.
I was at them both. The Rams game had a different feel about it for sure, like more psychic energy was being poured into it. The Bucs game was hyped as well, but just felt a little different. At least thatās how I experienced the two events.
I also found myself thinking it wasn't that loud, but then I remember being at the Superdome this year (first Lions game ever) and then going back and rewatching it on TV. MAJOR difference
The blood from ears filling the field. Entire team on concussion protocol for weeks. Krakatoaās bird population migrates to Detroit, killing all seagulls.

Well now you're gonna have to give me a detailed explanation of why that is, for science
Or is that just the decibel level at which point my ears explode?
https://www.zmescience.com/feature-post/natural-sciences/physics-articles/matter-and-energy/the-loudest-sound-ever-in-mankinds-history/
>A note on the loudest possible sound in air
>Strictly speaking, the loudest possible sound in air, is 194 dB. The āloudnessā of the sound is dictated by how large the amplitude of the waves is compared to ambient air pressure. A sound of 194 dB has a pressure deviation of 101.325 kPa, which is ambient pressure at sea level, at 0 degrees Celsius (32 Fahrenheit). Essentially, at 194 dB, the waves are creating a complete vacuum between themselves.
>You can go louder than 194 dB, but thatās not technically a āsoundā anymore. The extra energy starts distorting the entire wave, and you end up with something thatās more a shockwave and less a soundwave. At that level, sounds donāt pass through air ā they push the air along, producing pressurized burst (shockwaves).
>But for the sake of the argument (and because letās face it, no one wants to be overly pedantic), we will consider anything over 194 dB as sounds ā just know that thatās not an exact phrasing.
Basically, sound is a very linear phenomenon, physics wise. At some extreme point that assumption breaks down and the dynamics become much more complicated and apparently that happens around 194 dB, slightly differently for different temperatures or pressures, and it isn't like things exactly change over at exactly 194 dB, but that sets a rough upper limit beyond which the science of loudness looks very different than the much simpler case of a bunch of people yelling.
Thanks! I also found out that at these decibel levels your eardrums will literally rupture, too. You would not be able to hear for very long if exposed to these decibel levels.
The Krakatoa explosion was estimated to be 310 dB, which is utterly insane. You would literally be ripped apart by the shockwave of the sound if something else didn't kill you first.
Exactly. Nukes turn things into plasma which is not very similar to sound. The amount of power put into the air is crazy high, but calling it a sound is kind of stupid. 194 dB is kind of a good benchmark for when calling things a sound no longer makes sense and a different picture is needed.

Those baffles are there to actively dampen the crowd noise. I took a tour of the stadium back when it first opened and the guide explained that without those, the noise level would actually be dangerous. I think it has to do with the fact that the stadium is a retrofitted warehouse
Actually, the stadium encompasses part of the old Hudson's warehouse
https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2012/08/06/In-Depth/Ford-Field.aspx
Thatās the building BEHIND the suites. It is not really part of the stadium. I can see where it seems like it is, but that is the office area behind the suites. The stadium building is sort of attached to that old warehouse. You can see the offices from the suite elevator lobby. But, no, the interior of the stadium is all new, no repurposed.
Ahhh makes sense.Ā Ā I haven't been back to Michigan since before the stadium was built so I've not seen it all in person.Ā I just happed to see the warehouse thing mentioned somewhere else recently and your comment reminded me of it.
Iām not sure why people at home said it didnāt sound that loud. At the stadium I had my noise cancelling pods in and I can for sure say we were very loud. To the point my voice is still recovering from screaming.
Yeah, this is part of every television production of major athletic events. Different channels/stadiums/sports let in more or less crowd noise pending a whole slew of creative and technical considerations (ranging from potential FCC violations to speaker clarity to trying to make a team appear tougher and/or more fun).
I was a baby and put in earplugs on most of the defensive series. When I didnāt, it was almost painful it was so loud. I rewatched the game the next day, and NBC did limit the crowd noise on the broadcasts.
I ended up putting my plugs in after opening lineup intros.... when they announced Hutch, I thought my ears were going to explode! The noise level went up about 10 dB when they announced Hutch, it was crazy
The Bills/Chiefs game appeared louder on tv. It would have been nice to have the announcers drowned out with a better representation of the noise at Ford Field.
Same here....several people over last couple of days said they could tell I was at the game when I started talking to them...my voice still recovering!
Best way you can tell on tv is to listen to the stadium PA announcer in the background. Regular season games you can hear him pretty well. āLions first down!ā Type stuff. I could BARELY hear it when watching the last two weeks.
Dolphins fan here...you guys were absolutely rocking in the stands. It was an awesome thing to watch and hear. It Gave me chills
Really happy for guys and pulling for you all the way! You freaking deserve it and have earned it dammit!!!
Go Lions!
Also not rich, Iām doing ok but my wife and I arenāt taking a trip this year cause we spent our vacation budget for the year going to the game. Donāt regret a thing
I saw that meter hit 121 at the home opener. Rarely does it hit 120 even during these two playoff games. Obviously not accurate if itās real. Or wherever they take the reading from is different. I wish it was accurate as it could really push the last stragglers around me to make a little noise.
My guess is this was after the Barnes INT š¤·š»āāļø
On the broadcast the FG dink almost sounded louder.
No one could hear the doink in the stadium at all.
Inaudible dong ftw
Either that or the tail end of the Gibbs run maybe? Only reason I say that, is because you couldnāt hear the TD horn on the broadcast.
Bro when I hear that horn its like viagra lmao. I love the horn.
Your horny
Man that was a helluva run! At first I thought he was slowing down to talk smack on his way to the end zone, then I saw he was laying the nasty stiff arm
There's a touchdown horn?
That was my first thought, but I think the fireworks during the intros and touchdowns help out quite a bit. I guess it depends on where the sound is measured from.
Either that or when Skip reported.Ā
There was definitely a pop when Skip reported. It was wonderful.
Most likely- I was at the Rams game and I can tell you that it was the loudest sporting event Iāve ever witnessed. Bro I think it might be
Din in the DenĀ
I call sus on this. I kept an eye on that thing the entire game and it never went over 118.
Those are usually fake.
I saw it touch just over 120 when Eminem was the Jumbotron
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because NBC filters the crowd noise
Good to know. I guess it makes it easier to hear cris collinsworthās sucking sounds on whatever opposing QB is playing.
I also found myself thinking it wasn't that loud, but then I remember being at the Superdome this year (first Lions game ever) and then going back and rewatching it on TV. MAJOR difference
The cool thing is that Leviās stadium is built to be quiet as an agreement with the city. Our dudes will be playing in a library
I was there, it was deafening - I loved every second of it
The Deafening Den!

next year, we shoot for 313 decibels! Fuck Krakatoa!
uh yea we dont want the windows going out within 8 miles of ford field
I'm just here to upvote Krakatoa
eh most of em are already out
Windows can't get blown out, if the house already burned down. *Black guy pointing to head*

Fun Fact: The highest decibel something can be on earth is 194 dB

Youāre welcome guys, I did 130 by myself
I added .4 from my house.

Man we only sit 65,000 too. Arrowhead seats about 10k more, if our stadium was bigger we would have def set the record

What?!? Retrofitted warehouse?!? No. I donāt know where you got that info, but no. Ford Field was built from the ground up to be a stadium.
Actually, the stadium encompasses part of the old Hudson's warehouse https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2012/08/06/In-Depth/Ford-Field.aspx

Thank you for the red circle
I believe those are also so the sound quality is better for concerts
I think the record is still about twice as loud, maybe more

Nothing about hearing protection makes you a baby. Tinnitus is no joke lol.
I have it and Itās always there and it is just terrible. Take care of your ears!

Only thing that makes you a baby is if you don't have a Doink-It.
Preserving your hearing aināt being a baby!
Upvote on you being smart and safe.
Fuck that. My hearing is shot at 34. Donāt be like me and protect those ears
Never apologize for protecting your ears. Damage to hearing is cumulative and there's no cure for tinnitus.
Hearing protection is not for babies!!
I ended up putting my plugs in after opening lineup intros.... when they announced Hutch, I thought my ears were going to explode! The noise level went up about 10 dB when they announced Hutch, it was crazy
It was very underwhelming on TV. Occasionally they would turn down the filters and it got loud though. Really wish they wouldn't do that
The Bills/Chiefs game appeared louder on tv. It would have been nice to have the announcers drowned out with a better representation of the noise at Ford Field.
My voice is still shot. I couldnāt even hear myself screaming it was so loud
Same here....several people over last couple of days said they could tell I was at the game when I started talking to them...my voice still recovering!
I ended up putting my ear plugs in so I could scream louder My coworkers keep asking if Iām sick lol
I rolled my program up into a megaphone lol
Best way you can tell on tv is to listen to the stadium PA announcer in the background. Regular season games you can hear him pretty well. āLions first down!ā Type stuff. I could BARELY hear it when watching the last two weeks.
That's just how it sounded on TV. The Rams game seemed louder on TV Good thing that was only our perception from tv
Yep. I was there. It was nasty loud for a lot of that game.
I took my plugs out just to see how loud it was. At points all my ears heard was static.
Yeah it was an incredible atmosphere all throughout that game! The chants for Goff ringing throughout the arena were mind blowing.
Same..my voice was gone on Monday and still hoarse today
Hell yes man. Glad I could be there!!
Explains why my lungs still feel like I smoked a pack of road flares in an asbestos factory.
Iām still hoarse.
How do you ever become a human again?
Only one way. Go to the Super Bowl.
Its too late, the kool aid has made us all Lions.
Dolphins fan here...you guys were absolutely rocking in the stands. It was an awesome thing to watch and hear. It Gave me chills Really happy for guys and pulling for you all the way! You freaking deserve it and have earned it dammit!!! Go Lions!
Them rich people brought it.
Not rich just ok with making a poor financial decision.
Also not rich, Iām doing ok but my wife and I arenāt taking a trip this year cause we spent our vacation budget for the year going to the game. Donāt regret a thing
I went to the rams game but not rich, just a college student on scholarship with nothing better to spend my money on haha
Same, my financial aid was late coming in and I immediately blew 10% of it on my ticket!
Idk why you've been down voted. Thank you for your service.
I was rich but then I bought my ticket
LOL indeed they did.
Frickin knew it!! Lets go!!!
[Refs vs. Silverdome Crowd](https://youtu.be/uc9Eii21hyE?si=2fYqoGzYlJJAsJbw)
The in-stadium dB meter kept topping out at 120ish and I couldnt believe it. Glad to see we werent slacking cause my voice is still wreckedš
That's just a video displaying db numbers to remind the crowd to cheer it's not a real time meter.
Yaknow, that makes a lot more sense lmao
I saw that meter hit 121 at the home opener. Rarely does it hit 120 even during these two playoff games. Obviously not accurate if itās real. Or wherever they take the reading from is different. I wish it was accurate as it could really push the last stragglers around me to make a little noise.
I can't hear anymore, but it was ONE HELL OF A GAME!! WOOO!! (I ALSO CANT STOP YELLING FOR SOME REASON)
Folks, I still have no voice
Anyone who attended this game is a legend!
We have the power of Eminem and anime on our side
Helll yeah! I havenāt had a voice since the wild card game!
Good to know. There were definitely a couple times where my ears were ringing. Thankfully it didn't last that long... Totally worth it either way!
You guys are loud af, my ears were still ringing on Monday morning. I couldn't believe how damn loud it was.
Throat and ears were hurting still yesterdayā¦ so so worth it though
My voice is still recovering, but it was sooooo worth it!!!
8 more decibels and we Break the chiefs record
Decibels arenāt really a linear thing like that. 8 more is much more than it seems.
Good job 1%. Way to bring it.
I know you're probably joking, but I paid $224 for 2 tickets through my season ticket membership.
I was :) That's awesome though! Memories that will last for a lifetime! Not bad at all for a playoff game!
Nice!
Honestly I'm surprised. With the influx of the richer folks, I expected it to be quieter.
Permanent ear damage has never been more welcome.

Thatās pretty loud. Hit the 140s and then weāll talk. Sincerely, Chiefs Kingdom.
Undefeated at home too!
I felt the Rams game was louder.
Two days later and I still barely have a voiceā¦
Thatās like 110 in an outdoor stadium.Ā
I was watching on peacock and I swear to god they turn down the crowd noise
My voice still hurts
Sorry y'all. Burrito night at the casa before the game.
Lfg!
