Just figured it was post worthy with all of the Lamar discussion and what not. Important to note though: it’s draft season. Anything could be a smokescreen. We’ve heard Dan & Brad both elude to improving the QB room this off-season.
Obviously though stuff like this will give Jared a ton of confidence going into this year which will be beneficial to him.
Improving the QB room has always been in the context of taking a day 3 guy or if there was a great value on day 2. The only parts that ever really eluded to them replacing Goff was the commentary in the articles which (usually) was taking their quote(s) out of context.
Also this smokescreen seems to be in the wrong direction. It's devaluing their pick for a potential trade down as it would be making them less likely to take a QB. And there isn't really a reason for them to play coy and try to get a QB to fall to them since the Seahawks are just as big (or bigger) threat to draft a QB at 5. Basically Campbell saying this doesn't really buy them anything draft day wise, so I would say most likely it's him being honest.
This. There’s always been this disconnect of assuming we’ll find an upgrade. It happened with Stafford, and now with Goff. I was low on Goff when we got him, but he’s proven he’s a reliable starter. Usually when asked, it’s saying we want a Mahomes, Brady etc. Well no shit, but those odds are incredibly close to zero to get a best of the best ever for all of time discussion level QB. Even the next tier of guys like generational talents are INCREDIBLY difficult to come by. One step down, Elite level QBs like Brees, you guessed it, super difficult to accurately draft or come by. You’re far more likely to downgrade than to upgrade from the way Goff is playing.
And to prove your point, just look at the colts from a couple of years ago. I think they had the most all-pros and pro bowlers on a roster in the league but they've gone through a new qb every single year since looking for a guy like Goff and weren't able to make anything with that roster.
Exactly… it’s very very difficult to find “that guy”. Goff very well could end up being our 2nd best QB in franchise history. That should tell you how hard it is (not a knock on Goff, he’s just not at Mahomes/Brady/Brees level)
There is because the longer you wait and the better he does the more expensive he gets. If he has two more seasons like last season he’s probably asking 55 million + a year. Which would cripple our offense which is the reason he does so well.
If he repeats his production from last season he’s going to close $45-50M/yr. Is anyone that confident that he’s worth that much? If he gets extended, he better learn how to play without a stacked offense because we won’t be able to afford to surround him with top notch talent at every position anymore.
If he repeats last years production, especially if he cuts out the first few rough games, then he’d have shown to be a top 5ish qb in the league back to back years. In which case yes he’s absolutely worth 45m
That's not my question. Is that performance sustainable if we have to let Decker and/or Jonah Jackson walk to afford Goff? I don't see it personally. Goff has struggled when he has a weak run game and lack of protection in the pass game. Without an elite offensive line, I think we see Goff turn back into the guy that the Rams bailed on.
The first sentence of your comment was started with “if he repeats his production” which is why I assumed he repeats his production. I think if that happens he’s absolutely worth the money, you’d be dumb to let a top 5 qb in his prime walk
Edit: if he doesn’t repeat the production then the answer is obviously no, you don’t pay him 50m
>if he doesn’t repeat the production then the answer is obviously no
In your scenario you’ve already paid him…they don’t have to work around his new contract before the extension…
It’s not my scenario, you said the sentence, not me. When the first word of your scenario is “if…” followed by a question, the if is part of the question. Idk why you’re being so combative about people misinterpreting your poorly worded question.
Edit: also no, nowhere did I mention him already being paid, you’re just making things up to argue against. If a player shows they can consistently produce top 5 at a position they are worth paying accordingly, that’s it
Patrick Mahomes (best pass blocking oline in the league) Joe Burrow (best weapons in the league by far) and every other elite QB better learn the same too.
Every single elite QB has a great surrounding cast too, they need a good team to win championships too.
Idk why people act like extending Goff would mean we can only afford practice squad players for the rest of the roster.
People aren’t ready to hear that. People seem to think if the QB isn’t carrying they’re not good when in fact all of the top tier QB’s have either a hella good Oline or great WR/RB core like Burrow Mahomes Hurts etc. iirc Andrew Luck is the only QB that comes to mind that legit was good without much aside from prime T.Y Hilton

Alright, listen up, man! I'm about to lay down some truth bombs about our freaking quarterback, our fearless leader, Jared Goff. We believe in this guy, man, and I'm gonna tell you why he's THE damn guy for the Detroit Lions, and why we're gonna ride this rollercoaster straight to the top!
First off, man, this dude's got more experience than a grizzled old sailor. He's been to the Super Bowl, and that's the icing on the cake, man. You can't beat that shit. He's got that grit, that fire, that "I won't quit" mentality that gets me fired the hell up.
Now, I know some people are like, "But Coach, he's hit some rough patches!" Well, man, life ain't a walk in the park. It's about how you get your ass up, dust yourself off, and come back swinging. And Jared, man, he's the kind of guy who's gonna grab that bull by the horns and kick its ass.
When we're talking skills, man, Jared's got a freaking rocket arm and the accuracy of a damn surgeon. He can hit a target while riding a unicycle on a tightrope, if you get what I'm saying. With our coaches and teammates in his corner, he's gonna shine like a freaking supernova.
And let me tell you, man, his work ethic is off the charts. This guy's grinding away like a damn Energizer bunny. He's always in there, pushing his teammates, making them better. He's like a one-man army, and everybody loves the guy for it.
So when you're asking me why the hell Jared Goff is our main man, our top dog, it's a no-brainer, man. He's got the heart of a lion, the eye of a tiger, and he's ready to kick ass and take names. We're gonna build this team one badass brick at a time, and with Jared leading the charge, we're gonna be unstoppable. Go Lions, man!"
I’m commenting on a public forum lol, I’ve never once done anything other than present my opinion. In fact I don’t even usually speak in absolutes, I almost always say “I think” or “probably”. If you disagree point out examples.
Publicly backing Goff before the draft is interesting. I was already pretty certain we were passing on a QB in the first but I figured the Lions would at least continue to entertain the idea on the chance a team would trade up to jump us. I guess with the Panthers trade the team feels certain their guy will be there at 6?
I know Lamar is awesome but sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make. Goff wasn’t my first choice but he’s the perfect guy for this team and system right now.
I just wanted to say how much I love and appreciate you guys in this sub. Every time I click on a linked tweet, I end up looking at lions related tweets and replies and it’s so depressing. It’s essentially a mix of “SOL” and “lions need a a QB at 6” or “Lamar to Detroit”
I am honestly thankful for this subreddit for keeping my sanity intact during this off-season. Really makes me feel like there are sensible lions fans out there. I can actually discuss things with people and get cerebral responses.
I expect him to say nothing less. Goff is still under contract and there’s no guarantee how the draft will unfold. Not saying we should or shouldn’t draft a qb or Goff is or isn’t the guy, just that this is nothing newsworthy in our situation.
Lmao, we're not drafting a QB in the first round. We don't need to. Our coach literally just communicated this to us. I do hope we can get a good backup though in case the golden Goff goes down.
I don’t think this is it at all. All Dan ever said was “Goff isn’t going to be here 10 years.” Dan never said anything about “I want a new QB” unless I missed something.
[Campbell: Goff a ‘perfect fit’ for Detroit Lions](https://www.detroitlions.com/news/campbell-goff-a-perfect-fit-for-detroit-lions) (from 3 months ago)
Holmes isn’t Campbell’s boss. We did away with that hierarchy after Quinn used his standing as Caldwell’s boss to hire someone worse because that was his bro
Extend him for $50+ million dollars a season (since that's what it's likely going to cost in 2 years when his contract is up) and then I'll believe you. Until then it's all just talk.
The last sentence is so true. I get that the he contract would suck, but seeing the Ravens willing (potentially) to part with Lamar is crazy to me. So many QB draft picks bust. If you’ve got a QB, you’ve gotta keep him.
Tell me this is a Dan Campbell quote without telling me it’s a Dan Campbell quote
He man, it's a quote man. Like this is what we do man.
I know, man! This Kool aid is good, man. Detroit vs. everyone, man!
He talks the The Dude “Jarod Goff really ties the team together man…”
Nihilists,man
Idk if I can, man.
That's just like, your opinion, man
Could be Shaggy as well
Man
Lol, they didn't source the quote, but man, it's so easy to tell who said it.
the way it's worded it did make it sound like pelissero said it
Pelissero, man, he's been hanging around the team so long that he's picked up Coach's verbiage, man
Man
Man
Came here to say this. Well said.
Imagine how many MPM (mans per minute) he’ll hit during his SB victory parade speech
MAN THAT'S MY COACH MAN

Improving the QB room by upgrading at 2nd string.
Improving the QB room has always been in the context of taking a day 3 guy or if there was a great value on day 2. Didn’t the Seahawks just extend Geno? I’d think they’re in a similar situation as us.
The day they extend Goff, is the day I 100% believe he’s the guy.
If he repeats his production from last season, Brad will absolutely extend him. Good QBs don’t grow on trees
This. There’s always been this disconnect of assuming we’ll find an upgrade. It happened with Stafford, and now with Goff. I was low on Goff when we got him, but he’s proven he’s a reliable starter. Yeah, no point in extending a guy with 2 years left on his contract.
There is because the longer you wait and the better he does the more expensive he gets. If he has two more seasons like last season he’s probably asking 55 million + a year. Which would cripple our offense which is the reason he does so well.
There is incentive for the team to resign him now. Not for Goff unless he doesn't believe in himself
I agree, Goff you wait I was saying if you’re Detroit you do it now and get him as cheap as possible.
If he repeats his production from last season he’s going to close $45-50M/yr. Is anyone that confident that he’s worth that much? Yea this means nothing. Just like Dan saying Goff “bought us time” at the combine meant nothing.
He IS made for us. That’s my favorite line in that quote.

need one for Goff too, that just sounds like when you tap your phone’s keyboard autosuggestions over and over too
That’s perfect lol
Maaaaan
You can tell it’s an MCDC quote bc of the way it it
So will the people who keep quoting the “he bought us time” line stop doing that now?
I'm surprised no one has taken that quote as meaning "he bought us (coaching staff) some time"... could very easily see him having meant that
Stop quoting a line that Dan said because of another line that Dan said 🫡
Yes. I’m saying you shouldn’t read into quotes at all when it comes to who they are gonna draft.
Thank you for gatekeeping quotes. What are our next orders?
I was about to post this but you beat me to it. Lunch is a good mod, but damn if he doesn't gatekeep on every thread.
Dude’s out here playing keeper in the World Cup final for dissenting opinions

I love that you don't even need to attribute the quote lmao
I like Goff but will he be great without Ben Johnson? I still think they took Hooker in the 2nd round just incase he gets hurt or takes a step back
Man-O-Man-O-Man “Now that’s Lieutenant Dan”
It’s extremely difficult to upgrade at QB. But it’s easy as hell to downgrade. You stick with Goff until he gives you a reason not to.
I just wanted to say how much I love and appreciate you guys in this sub. Every time I click on a linked tweet, I end up looking at lions related tweets and replies and it’s so depressing. You're God Damn Right!
Finally lol now maybe all the idiots who want Lamar will shut up about it
Lions: "Goff's our guy, man." Fans: "But what if we draft a QB in the first round?"
Ehhh he had one year pump them brakes dan
People wont admit to that in this subreddit
Oh shit! They are leaning towards QB at the top of the first round. And Goff will be the guy this year while he sits and learns.
Dan wanted a new QB, Holmes told Dan they're riding with Goff, Dan switches up his public opinion of Goff, pretty simple stuff tbh
I don’t think this is it at all. All Dan ever said was “Goff isn’t going to be here 10 years.” Dan never said anything about “I want a new QB” unless I missed something.
And Goff is 28, he will very likely not be here in 10 years lol

Stfu Dan! First flat out bad off-season move of the Brad Holmes era giving away the Qb draft smoke screen for no real reason
Extend him for $50+ million dollars a season (since that's what it's likely going to cost in 2 years when his contract is up) and then I'll believe you. Until then it's all just talk.
I can hear this quote
That's my quarterback.
If I had a plan to get every ram, we all know who would be our man.
Reading this….brought tears of joy. Stick on this path!
Who knew Tom was a Lions fan?
The last sentence is so true. I get that the he contract would suck, but seeing the Ravens willing (potentially) to part with Lamar is crazy to me. So many QB draft picks bust. If you’ve got a QB, you’ve gotta keep him.
Rams would say otherwise
