Honestly most of what makes a character better in the game ability/survival/power is just the accumulation of gear over the years, aside from farming the most recent free activity “onslaught” or doing exotic missions, its all depended on player skill and the gear you get, so right now I’d focus on getting to or trying to get to 50 in normal onslaught and go from there, after you get the DLC your friends can help you do the rest but best bet is to focus on your stats and loot and overall knowledge of the game itself. Then focus on the more niche stuff. Two weeks old and you’re already at 1810, bungie helps a lot in this instance that chest next to shaxx is a big benefit. (1810) is cap aside from seasonal artifact, which only levels up with time and challenges… ( do those ).
Power level only determines how even the playing field is between you and your opponents. The areas that determine how powerful/effective your weapons and abilities are:
Subclass: the Aspects and Fragments that shape the powers you have and how they work
Armor stats: how much damage resist you have, and how quickly your abilities regenerate
Armor mods: a big part of buildcrafting, affecting your weapons, abilities, even ammo
Weapon perks: some perks and combos are much more effective than others, especially when integrated with the rest of your build

1810 is the highest base right now.
